5. Don’t take the product apart or attempt to remove the battery. Be forewarned, disassembly voids your warranty.

7. Continuous use of earbuds at high volumes may cause permanent hearing loss.
8. Please plug or unplug the earbuds and cable by holding the plugs. Pulling out the earbuds or cable by the cable can cause damage to the product.
9. When you plug the USB cable into your PC, check that you are plugging in the correct end. If the cable is plugged in the wrong way, the PC or the product might be damaged.
10. Keep the USB connector on the product free of dirt.
11. When the product becomes dusty or dirty, wipe it with a soft cloth or clean towel. Do not use chemicals or solvents.

Note: Although you can use Windows Explorer to copy music files onto your Virgin Player, your Virgin Player won’t recognize those files as music files. You must use the included Windows Media Player (or other compatible music management software) to load music onto your Virgin Player.

Your Virgin Player—A Bird’s Eye ViewNo rocket science or secret codes required here. Everything is right under your nose and easy to find
1. Play/Pause - Starts/pauses the current track.
2. Next - Goes to the next track. Press and hold to fast forward through the current track; the longer you hold it, the faster it advances through the track.
3. Back Button - Goes back one screen. Yup, just like your web browser.
4. Control Pad - Gets you around the menus. Press it up to scroll up a line, down to scroll down a line, or in (for Enter). To move into the warp speed scrolling zone, press up or down a little harder.
5. FM Tuner Switch - Switches between FM and player modes.
6. Previous - Goes to the start of the current track. (Unless the track has been playing less than 5 seconds, then it goes to the previous track.) Press and hold to rewind in the current track; the longer you hold it, the faster it rewinds through the track.
7. Home Button -Jumps to the Home menu. Press this button if you’re feeling lost, or maybe just a little homesick. Just like the home button on your web browser.
8. Power Connector - Lets you charge it up to keep those tunes flowin'.
9. USB Connector - Lets you hook up your Virgin Player to your PC to download music and to charge it at the same time.
10. Volume Buttons - + turns the volume up, and - turns it down. Who would’ve guessed?
11. Lock Switch - Locks all the controls so you can put your Virgin Player in your pocket or bag without unwanted button presses. By the way, you can still use the FM Tuner switch and Volume buttons when the controls are locked.
12. Earbud Jacks - Yup, two jacks. One for you, and one so you can share your great taste in music with a mate. That is, if you can find someone who can appreciate your obscure musical taste.
13. Power Button - Turns your Virgin Player on/off. When it’s already on, press and hold briefly to turn on the backlight, or press and hold a little longer to put it into deep sleep mode. Deep sleep mode saves battery power when you’re turning off your Virgin Player for a while.

Get Ready
Getting a Few Things StraightFrom here on out we’re going to assume you know a few things. This means that once you get passed this page, we won’t repeat this basic info; so read it here, and then move on.
Turning your Virgin Player on/off� Press the Power button to turn the power on (and off).
Selecting items on the screenWhen we say “select” something, we want you to:
1. Press or to scroll to an item.
2. Press Enter—that’s the square thing in the middle—to select it.
Retracing your steps� Press to go back to the previous screen—it’s just like your
web browser.
� Press to jump to the Home menu.

In this section you'll charge the battery and connect the earbuds. You'll also install the music management software and connect your Virgin Player to your PC. It's like shootin' fish in a barrel...

Charging the BatteryYes, you can use your Virgin Player while it's charging, but leave it hooked up for about 3 hours, or until the on-screen battery gauge fills up. And chill out for a while. It’s best to charge the battery all the way the first time you use it.
1. Plug the AC adapter into a power outlet.
2. Plug the power cable into your Virgin Player.
3. Let it sit for about 3 hours until the battery indicator fills up.
OK, so which one is the power connector, and what does the other one do? The one on the left is for the charger, and the one on the right is for the USB connection on the PC. You can always double-check by looking for the DC and USB icons.

Connecting the EarbudsPlug the earbuds into one of the two headphone jacks. You can use the included earbuds or any headphones or powered speakers with a 3.5mm connector.
Tip: For the best FM radio reception, unravel the earbuds’ cable all the way. The FM tuner antenna is built into the cable. How’s that for a stealth bit of design, eh?

Connecting the Virgin Player to Your PC It doesn't get much easier than this...
1. Connect one end of the USB cable to any powered USB port on your PC. (Sorry, no USB hubs or pass through ports, like the ones on keyboards or monitors.)
2. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the USB port on the bottom of your Virgin Player.
3. You should see several messages on your PC as it recognizes your Virgin Player. Wait for a message that says your new hardware is installed and ready-to-use before you move on.
If everything worked correctly, you should see a new removable hard drive called “Virgin 5GB” when you click My Computer. If you have any trouble, check the next page to make sure your PC has the right stuff.
Your Virgin Player supports both USB 1.1 and 2.0. (USB 2.0 is way faster than 1.1.) And, bonus points... your Virgin Player charges when it’s hooked up to your PC.

Get Set
Installing the Software Before you can use your Virgin Player, you need to load your music onto it. The Windows Media Player software that comes with your Virgin Player lets you load music, manage your music files, rip songs from CDs, and burn CDs on your PC. Read on to learn how to install the software and get ready to listen to your favorite tunes.
Tip: Can’t find the CD with the installation software? Go to www.virginelectronics.com/support to download the latest software for the Virgin Player 5GB.
Does your PC have the right stuff?Make sure your PC is up to snuff. Your PC should meet these minimum requirements:
� Windows 2000, XP Home, or XP Professional
� 233 MHz or faster processor clock speed
� 128 MB RAM (memory)
� 150 MB available hard drive space (more space required to rip CDs or download music files)
� USB port
� CD-ROM drive
� Internet connection
Getting it on1. We hate to interrupt, but you do need to close any open programs on your PC.
2. Put the CD in your PC’s CD drive and wait a few minutes for the installation to automatically begin. (If it doesn't begin, double-click My Computer, then the CD drive, and then SETUP.EXE).
3. When the installation screen appears, click Forge On!
4. Stay between the lines and follow the steps on the screen.
5. When the screen tells you to, restart your PC.
After you restart your PC, Windows Media Player starts automatically. If you need help using Windows Media Player, you can see a demo that shows you how to load music onto your Virgin Player 5GB at www.virginelectronics.com/support.

Transferring Tunes From Your PCVERY IMPORTANT! Follow these steps carefully. If you unplug your Virgin Player incorrectly, you can lose your music or even damage your Virgin Player hard drive.
1. Connect your Virgin Player to your PC. The connected screen appears to let you know that everything is hooked up.
2. Start the transfer process in your music management software. The transferring screen appears to let you know that your tunes are copying.
3. When the connected screen reappears, press and hold . The Home menu should appear on your Virgin Player so you can get back to your tunes.
4. Unplug the USB cable from your Virgin Player.

Selecting Music FilesNow that you've loaded your MP3/WMA files, pick the tunes you want to hear...
Select an artist1. Get to the music menu:
� Press .
� Select music.
2. Pick the artist:
� Select artist.
� Select the artist you want to hear.
3. Pick the album(s):
� Select the album you want to hear. Or, select play all albums to pick all the albums by that artist—of course they do need to be on your Virgin Player, DUH! (If you pick play all albums, playback begins when you press Enter.)
4. Pick a starting point:
� Select the first song you want to hear.
Tip:. After you highlight an album, artist, or genre, press to start playing all the tunes for that item right away.

Playback starts with the song you select. If this isn’t the first song on the album, it loops back to the beginning of the album after it plays all the other songs. So, if there are 12 tracks on the album and you select the third track, you’ll hear tracks 3 –12, and then tracks 1 and 2.

Select a playlistPlaylists are a great way to pick a bunch of tunes on the fly, and you’ll probably never hear the same playlist twice. Like a good friend, your Virgin Player loves to surprise you!

� Select the playlist you want to hear to start playing that playlist.
Be a DJ1. Get to the DJ menu:

� Select virgin dj.
2. Pick a dj theme:
� Just loaded - Select this theme to play music you recently copied to your Virgin Player. You can choose just how new “just loaded” means: 1 day, 3 days, 5 days, or 1 week.
� Play it all - Select this theme to play everything on your Virgin Player. You can sort the tunes by: album, artist, genre, or rating.
� Top 20 - Select this theme to play the tracks you listen to most often from a specific genre—you choose which one.
� Lost & Found - Select this theme to unearth buried treasure. You can choose just how dusty you want the tunes to be. (In other words, how long it’s been since you’ve played them: 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 6 months, or never been played.)
Have it all1. Get to the music menu:

� Press Enter—that’s the square thing in the middle—to select it.
2. Pick the sort method: playlist, artist, album, songs, or genres.
3. Press to jump to (play all...) on the selected menu.

Do it again—repeat modeCan’t get enough of that favorite tune, album, or artist? Play it again, and again, and again...
1. Get to the Settings menu:

� Select repeat.
� Select which tunes you want to repeat: all tracks in the current list, the current track, or none.
Playback keeps repeating until you change the repeat setting or choose a new list. If you’re repeating one track and you skip to another track, that track repeats instead of the one you originally selected.
Mix it up—shuffle playListen to the selected tunes in random order (regardless of how you selected them—by artist, album, genre, playlist, or virgin dj).

Listening to the RadioIf you ever get tired of listening to your music collection (yeah, right), you can switch to FM Tuner mode and see what's on the airwaves.
1. Switch to FM Tuner mode:
� Slide the FM Tuner switch on the left side of your Virgin Player to the FM position.
2. Use the Control Pad to search for FM stations:
� To surf for stations (in 1 step increments) - Press or .
� To auto seek for stations - Press or a little harder.
3. Adjust the volume:
� Press the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons to adjust the volume level.
� Press to mute and unmute the sound.
4. Save some presets:
� Press and to select a preset slot.
� Select the station you want to save.
� Press and hold Enter to save that station in that preset slot.
5. Select a preset:
� Press and to select a preset slot, but don’t press Enter, that changes the preset station. Just wait a second for your Virgin Player to switch stations.
Tip: If you switch to FM Tuner mode while playing music, you can return to that same music list later. Just slide the FM Tuner switch back to the right and then press .

Getting Balanced
Dial in the sound Make your tunes sound just right by changing your EQ. (It’s EQ, not IQ. Sorry, it may make you happier, but it won’t make you any smarter.) For example, the “Headset” setting is optimized for the earbuds that come with your Player. But if you rock out with the Virgin Electronics Boomtube™ portable speakers, you'd want to change the EQ to that setting.
1. Get to the Settings menu:

2. Pick the EQ setting:
� Select eq.
� Select an EQ profile.
The new profile kicks in as soon as you select it. If you like it, go back to listening. If you don’t like it, press to exit without saving the setting. Then, play with different settings until you find one you like.

Adjust the backlight setting1. Get to the Settings menu:

� Select backlight.
� Select how long the backlight stays on: always off, 5 sec, 15 sec, 30 sec, or always on.
Tip: To get the most play time out of your Virgin Player battery, set the backlight to always off. Don’t worry, this doesn’t leave you in the dark. You can still turn on the backlight manually by pressing and holding the Power button for a second.
Adjust the sleep mode setting1. Get to the Settings menu:

2. Pick the power setting:
� Select power off.
� Select how long your Virgin Player remains idle before it goes to sleep: 1 min, 5 min, 15 min, 30 min, or never.
When your Virgin Player goes to sleep, you can wake it up by pressing the Power button. If it stays asleep for more than an hour, it goes into deep sleep—a super power saving mode. You can also put your Virgin Player into deep sleep manually by pressing and holding the Power button for 5 seconds.

The basicsQ. Why won't my Virgin Player turn on?
A: Press the Power button (it's the round button on the top of your Virgin Player). If that doesn't work, make sure your device is charged. Remember that you need to charge your Virgin Player before using it for the first time. To charge your Virgin Player, either use the power cable or plug it into a USB port on your PC (see your Quick Start Guide for details).
Q. Why don't I see the charge indicator when my Virgin Player is charging?
A: If your Virgin Player's battery is extremely low, even the charging indicator won't turn on while it's charging. If the battery is very depleted it's also best to charge your device by plugging it directly into the wall instead of the USB port on your PC. Be sure to wait a few minutes after plugging it into a power source before you look for the charging indicator or try turning it on again.
Q. What do I do if my Virgin Player locks up?
A. If nothing happens when you connect your Virgin Player to the AC adapter or USB cable, or if your Virgin Player gets stuck on the “player 5GB” boot screen, you may need to reset your Virgin Player. It is best to do this while your Virgin Player is plugged into AC power. Get a trusty paper clip (as opposed to an untrustworthy one), bend one end so that it’s straight, stick it in that tiny hole above the FM tuner switch until you feel a little click, and then press the Power button. If that doesn’t solve the problem, check the website or call customer service.
Q. Does it matter which headphone jack I use?
A. Nope. You can use either one, or use both of 'em and rock on with a friend.
Connecting to your PCQ. Why doesn't “Connected” appear when I connect my Virgin Player to my PC?
A. Make sure the USB cable is connected to your Virgin Player and a USB port on your PC. If you’re using a USB hub or pass through port, plug the USB cable directly into your PC instead of into the hub or pass through port. Are both your Virgin Player and your PC turned on? (There’s your sign.) Also, make sure the FM Tuner switch on your Virgin Player is off (in the up position).
Q. I plugged my Virgin Player into a different USB port and the Virgin Player is recognized as a hard drive but not as a music player. What happened?
A. Unfortunately, Windows doesn't automatically recognize when you plug any USB device into a different port (and it still hasn't learned to do the dishes either). You can simply plug the Virgin Player back into its original USB port (the one it was plugged into when you installed the software), or you can follow the instructions below to set up the new USB port.
1. Open Control Panel, and then double-click System.
2. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
3. Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers.
4. Right-click the USB port the Virgin Player is plugged into. Sometimes it's labeled “Virgin Player” and sometimes it's labeled “Removable Mass Storage Class Device.”
5. Click Update Driver....

6. Don't let Windows try to guess or search for the driver; it's already on your hard drive. Just select Install from List or Specific location (advanced). It's really not that advanced.
7. Click Don't Search, I will choose the driver to install.
8. Click Have Disk and then navigate to \Program Files\Virgin\Virgin Electronics.
9. Select VM-0500.inf and watch it install the drivers.
Q. Why did my PC warn me that this is not a certified MS device?A. While this message seems daunting, you can ignore it and click Continue. Don't fret; our software is fully tested with Windows XP!
Q. Why do I get a warning about a High-Powered device when I plug my Virgin Player into its USB port?
A. Your Virgin Player does require a “High-Powered” USB port to work correctly. More specifically, you need a USB port that provides 500mAH (milliamp hours) of power—see we can speak Geek too. Some USB hubs and older laptops do not provide enough power. You may have to plug your USB hub into the wall, if it supports an AC adaptor.
Q. Why do I get a message about using a high-speed device in a non-high speed port?
A. This is Windows' way of letting you know that you're using USB 1.1 and that your transfer speeds will be slower than if you had USB 2.0. To prevent this message from showing up in the future, you can click Disable. Of course you can also upgrade your PC to include USB 2.0 ports (but that's up to you).
Q. What about Macintosh support?
A. Sorry, the Virgin Player does not currently support the Macintosh. You can plug it in and transfer files, but your device won't recognize or play the music files. We hope to support Macintosh computers in the near future.
Q. How come my device does not appear in my music management software?
A. To get the Virgin Player to show up in Windows Media, you need to install the software located on the included CD. If you can’t find the CD, go to www.virginelectronics.com/support to download the latest software for the Virgin Player 5GB.
Q. I just reformatted the hard drive on my Virgin Player. Why doesn't it play music?
A. Don't worry; with a fast Internet connection you can fix this one in a snap. Plug your Virgin Player into your USB port; you should get the Connected screen and the device should show up as a drive letter. Go to www.virginelectronics.com/support, find the Downloads section, and download the latest Virgin Player Firmware (remember where you save this file). This should leave you with a file called PP5020.mi4. Create a System folder on the root drive of your Virgin Player and then copy the PP5020.mi4 file into the newly created folder. When the transfer is done, press and hold to get back to the Home menu and everything should be fine—except your music will be gone. Now to fix that, just synchronize your Virgin Player with your music management software.
Q. I turned on my device and saw the message “Oh dear! This hard drive isn't working properly...”. What do I do?
A. First, to avoid getting this message—NEVER unplug your Virgin Player when you see Transferring on the screen and ALWAYS press before you disconnect the cable. That said this might not be as bad as it sounds. Here are three things you can do to fix this problem:
1. Connect your Virgin Player to your PC and run your music management software. Your music management software may take a few minutes to recognize your device this time, but this simple step may very well fix the problem. If all of your music appears in the music management software, you're likely good to go.

Playing music and copying filesQ. How do I get music onto my Virgin Player?
A. To listen to music on your Virgin Player, you need to copy music to your Virgin Player using music management software, such as Windows Media Player. You cannot simply drag and drop music files to the Virgin Player. If the Virgin Player does not show up as a music device in your music management software, you must install the software located on the CD that came with your Virgin Player. To install the Virgin Player software, put the CD in your PC’s CD drive, and follow the steps on the screen. If you can’t find the CD, go to www.virginelectronics.com/support to download the latest software for your Virgin Player.
Q. Which music management software can I use with my Virgin Player?A. Currently the best option is to use Windows Media Player 10 on Windows XP or Windows Media Player 9 on Windows 2000. The SETUP.EXE program will update your PC to the latest version that supports the Virgin Player.
Q. Can I copy other files to my Virgin Player?
A. Yup, you sure can. It's just like copying files to any other type of storage media; simply drag and drop. However, if you want to listen to music, you MUST copy music files to the Virgin Player using music management software. To install the software, put the CD in your PC’s CD drive, and follow the steps on the screen. If you can’t find the CD, go to www.virginelectronics.com/support to download the latest software for the Virgin Player 5GB.
Q. Can I upload files from my Virgin Player to my PC?
A. Yes, because your Virgin Player is an MSC (that’s geek-speak for Mass Storage Class) device. In plain English this means that you can use your Virgin Player like a portable hard drive to move files back and forth between your Virgin Player and your PC. You can even use it to store any type of file. Just remember, you do need to use music management software to transfer your music files.
Q. Why can't I see my music files on my Virgin Player?
A. If you copied music files from your hard drive to your Virgin Player using Windows Explorer, you won’t see them on your Virgin Player. Guess what? The files aren’t playing hide and seek; you just need to use music management software to transfer any music files you want to play. To install the software, put the CD that came with your Virgin Player in your PC’s CD drive, and follow the steps on the screen to install the music management software (Windows Media Player). If you can’t find the CD, go to www.virginelectronics.com/support to download the latest software for the Virgin Player 5GB.
Q. What type of music files can I play? A. MP3 and WMA files. Nope, you can’t play songs you purchased from iTunes, it uses a proprietary file format and protection scheme.
Q. What is the difference between MP3 and WMA?
A. MP3 is the most popular audio format on the Internet. It shrinks CD tracks better than a dryer on high heat (about 1/12 of their original size) with near-CD quality. The lesser known WMA format is an alternative for Windows and it offers comparable sound with even smaller file sizes. WMA is often used by music stores and subscription services. Unlike iTunes tracks, WMA files can be played on most MP3 players. We learned to share when we were little.
Q. I see playlists on my music management software, why can't I drag them over?
A. Right now, we do not support playlists but we're working hard to do so.

Q. How do I delete songs?
A. Be sure you delete the songs from both your music management software and your Virgin Player.
Q. Does my Virgin Player support the latest Microsoft DRM (digital rights management)?A. The Virgin Player supports Windows Media Audio digital rights management versions 1, 7, and 9. It can play music purchased from any of the digital music stores supporting that format including: Napster, MSN Online, Walmart, Music Now, and others.
Using your Virgin PlayerQ. Why don't the playback controls work?
A. Check the Lock switch on the top of your Virgin Player. (You know, the one that keeps the buttons from being pressed while the thing is in your pocket.) Make sure it’s set to “Unlock.” When your Virgin Player is locked, only the FM Tuner switch and Volume buttons work.
Q. How do I check the battery level? A. Look at the battery gauge on the screen. The more the battery is filled in, the more charge remains.
Q. Can I get an extra battery?
A. The Virgin Player comes with an internal rechargeable battery that you cannot remove or replace.
Q. How long can I use my Virgin Player before recharging?
A. The Virgin Player can play up to eight hours of music on a single charge and even longer if you're just listening to the FM tuner.
Q. What can I do to extend the battery life?
A. There are a few things you can do:
� Change your backlight setting to always off.
� Set your EQ level to none.
� Quit fiddling with the controls! The more you interact with the device, the shorter the battery life.
� Put your Virgin Player into “deep sleep” when you're not using it. Just hold the Power button down for 5 seconds. Note that if you forget to do this, it automatically goes into deep sleep when it's off for about two hours.
� Consider ripping your music from your CDs at lower bit rates. Songs ripped at 64K WMA sound about the same as 128K MP3 songs, but they actually take less power to play and they take up less space so you can put more music on your Virgin Player too.
� Whisper sweet nothings in your Virgin Player's ear. Hey, if it works for your girlfriend....
Q. Why can't I turn off my device just after I switch it on?
A. Wait five to ten seconds and try turning it off again. It should turn off then.
Q. Why can't I store 1200 songs?A. The number of songs you can store depends on which music format you're using: MP3 or WMA. If you rip (or convert) your music into 64K WMA, you may be able to store well over 2000 songs. On the other hand if you store your music in 192K MP3 or another super high quality format, you will be able to store fewer songs. Keep in mind that unless you listen to them side by side, most people can't tell the difference between the super high quality formats and the more space efficient ones.

Q. How do I get to the FM tuner?
A. There's a big switch on the left side of your Virgin Player. Simply slide it to the FM position.
Q. Why don't my buttons work when I'm using the FM tuner?A. You may have accidentally pressed the Play/Pause button that mutes the FM radio. Simply press that button again to get sound. You may also have turned the volume down too low. Press the + Volume button.
Q. In the FM tuner, I see that volume is on, but I don't hear anything?
A. You may have accidentally pressed the Play/Pause button that mutes the FM radio. Simply press that button again to get sound.
Q. How do I program FM channels?
A. Tune to a station you like by pressing the up and down buttons. (To scan for strong stations press the buttons harder.) To program a station, simply press and hold the square Enter button (it's the one between the up and down buttons).
Q. How can I become a beta tester for your future products?A. Watch this web page for requests for beta testers.
Q. Can I use accessories designed for other players?
A. Many accessories that use a standard 3.5mm audio jack should work fine with the Virgin Player. This includes various headphones, cassette tape adaptors, FM transmitter adaptors, portable speakers, and more. The fit might be a little snug though, so don't be afraid to use a little force to seat the connector properly.

Virgin Electronics, LLCLIMITED WARRANTY 90 days parts & labor
This product is warranted by Virgin Electronics to the original purchaser to be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use for a period of ninety (90) days from the date of purchase. This warranty excludes (1) physical damage to the surface of the product, including cracks or scratches on the outside casing; (2) damage caused by misuse, neglect, improper installation or testing, unauthorized attempts to open, repair, or modify the product, or any other cause beyond the range of the intended use; (3) damage caused by accident, fire, power changes, other hazards, or acts of God; or (4) use of the product with any non-Virgin Electronics device or service if such device or service causes the problem. Any third party products, including software, included with the product are not covered by this warranty and Virgin Electronics makes no representations or warranties on behalf of such third parties. Any warranty on such products is from the supplier or licensor of the product. This warranty does not cover customer instruction, installation, set up adjustment or signal reception or interference with radio communications problems. To obtain warranty service you must take or ship the product, freight prepaid, with a copy of the sales receipt or other proof of purchase and the date of purchase, to a Virgin Electronics Authorized Service Center. Due to the possibility of damage or loss, it is recommended when shipping the product to a Virgin Electronics Authorized Service Center that you package the product securely and ship it insured. Should a covered defect occur during the warranty period and you notify Virgin Electronics, your sole and exclusive remedy shall be, at Virgin Electronics' sole option and expense, to repair or replace the product or, if Virgin Electronics cannot reasonably repair or replace the product, then Virgin Electronics may, in its sole discretion, refund the purchase price paid for the product. Replacement products or parts may be new or reconditioned or comparable versions of the defective item. Virgin Electronics warrants any replaced or repaired product for a period of ninety (90) days from shipment.
