Virtual Systems
SMART
Buildings – Infrastructure – Cities
Christopher Heard
Focus
• Real time interactive environments are an emerging paradigm in Human Machine Interaction (HMI).
• Real time can be used to display and analyse big data sets at all scales, from smart homes to smart cities
Creating value comes from contextualising data in 3D.

Future Possibilities
• Monitor live data
• Control buildings via intuitive 3D interface
• Use existing data for planning (i.e. TfNSW)
• Virtual Reality! Augmented Reality!
• Mobile/Web

Challenges
• Displaying complex 3D models whilst retaining smooth UX
• Interpreting data correctly & contextualising the appropriate parts
• Lots of data: What is worth contextualising in 3D and what is better left to traditional methods
• What is the best & most intuitive way to display all this data in 3D

Conclusion
• 3D Real Time Environments provide intuitive and engaging ways to interface with existing data.
• Value comes from contextualising data in 3D.
• Conceptually, the method is scale agnostic – provided the correct data, we can apply the same method to everything from small buildings to cities.
