Waimangu Volcanic Valley

Overview

Waimangu Volcanic Valley is Rotorua's premier tourist attraction and a must-do experience for anyone looking for unique eco-tours that take in rare plants and fascinating geothermal features. Just 20 minutes south of Rotorua, this geothermal park, which features the spectacular Lake Rotomahana, is a protected scenic reserve and wildlife refuge set in pristine New Zealand bush. Waimangu Volcanic Valley was created in 1886 when Mt Tarawera erupted. The eruption destroyed the surrounding area and opened the earth along a 17km rift, splitting Mt Tarawera in two, exploding Lake Rotomahana to 20 times its size, and forming the seven craters that make up the valley today. Within 15 years of the volcanic eruption, the hot springs of the Waimangu geothermal system were established within the craters, making the reserve the world's youngest geothermal eco-system. Plant life returned 30 years after the eruption. There is a range of self-guided eco-tours as well as walks and hikes varying in length, along crater walkways from which visitors can view the park's amazing geothermal features. Boat cruises on Lake Rotomahana give visitors the chance to see the reserve's volcanic activity from a unique perspective. A regular courtesy shuttle is available to return visitors following the walk and cruise.

Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

Overview

Just 25 minutes' drive south of Rotorua, this stunning volcanic wonderland has been thousands of years in the making and is arguably New Zealand's most colourful geothermal attraction. The brilliantly coloured Champagne Pool and renowned Lady Knox Geyser are among the chief attractions here. This spectacular geyser erupts daily at 10.15am, wowing visitors as it reaches heights of up to 20 metres. Knowledgeable guides explain the geyser's background to all visitors. The geyser is nestled in a natural ampitheatre three minutes' drive from the visitor centre. Directions are available at reception. Wai-o-Tapu's natural bush setting adds another dimension to the experience. Stroll clearly defined tracks varying in length and marvel at unique volcanic vistas. No visit to the reserve would be complete without a stop at what the locals call the Mud Pool. A large mud volcano that once stood here was destroyed through erosion in the 1920s. The site is now one of the best places in New Zealand in which to experience the unique character and sounds of erupting mud.

Polynesian Spa

Overview

Polynesian Spa is one of New Zealand's oldest international spas and is a "must-do" attraction when visiting

Rotorua. The spa is a 100% New Zealand-owned private company since April 1972. We have had a policy of

continuous improvement that has seen the old government-run baths of the mid 1900’s transformed into the

internationally-renowned spa that it is today. All development has capitalized on the totally unique

geothermal views from the spa overlooking Sulphur Bay on Lake Rotorua and on the sustainable use of the

health-giving Rotorua geothermal waters. In addition, all developments have been done in strict sympathy

with the original 1930’s heritage buildings on the site.

Relax and rejuvenate in Rotorua's famous geothermal waters after a day of business at this unique thermal

spa. Voted as one of the World Top 10 Spas, Polynesian Spa is a must do activity while in Rotorua. This inviting

relaxation haven also provides an array of enticing spa therapies. Polynesian Spa specialises in Team Building,

Retreat, Partners Program, Corporate Gifts and Corporate Incentives.

Open daily from 8am - 11pm, Polynesian Spa's central Rotorua location is close to all major hotels, and a few

Off Road NZ

Overview

Since 1992, our focus has been corporate entertainment. We are renowned for providing groups with pulse

racing self-drive adventures and proven team building challenges. Our activity options will motivate,

invigorate, refresh and inspire your team and provide the group with a shared experience they will chat and

laugh about for years to come. For the duration of your visit to Off Road NZ, our staff will motivate your team

as they undertake challenges that are easily achieved by guests of any age, size or gender! Activities are sure

to be something most people have never done before.

THE PLAN

Imagine your guest’s reactions after they have boarded their coach to go to a mystery destination for dinner. Having only been told to dress warm and comfortably, a flicker of apprehension spreads through the crowd as they get further out of town. The coach drivers seem a little lost and unsure as to where they are going……. Your coaches pull into the Off Road NZ entrance and drive down a narrow winding track. With nothing but dark pasture on either concern as to what is going on is starting to grow amongst the passengers. Trees have started to appear on the sides of the track and it is soon apparent the coaches have come the wrong way. Everyone is asked to exit the coach to let the drivers turn around to go and look for help! Somewhere in the darkness the sound of a cranking motor turns into the throaty rumble of a V8 motor. Off in the trees two more motors leap into life and all of a sudden the darkness is shattered as 20,000 watts of light illuminates the entire area. A bright red Jet Boat screams from behind an island as a matching pair of Monster 4x4’s crawl down a nearby track towards you, shot guns go off and fires are lit. Before anyone has a chance to think the first passengers are strapped into these amazing vehicles, the night’s entertainment has arrived! Simultaneously the lights from the Native Bush Camp bring the sights, sounds and aromas of dinner to your astonished guests. Waiters appear with drinks on trays, an evening to remember has begun. THE SETTING Your evening takes place down at our Native Bush Camp Catering Venue. Set in the pristine native bush, overlooking our lake, guests can enjoy a variety of dinner options around the campfire. After dinner and activities the group can turn up the music and party on into the night.

Rotorua Canopy Tours

Overview

Rotorua Canopy Tours provide a rare combination of fun, education and adventure, an experience that has

been wowing both visitors and New Zealanders since 2012. Explore untouched native New Zealand forests just

10 minutes from Rotorua, with a 1.2km network of ziplines, swing bridges, treetop platforms and walking

trails. The best part – you help to regenerate this magical forest with a portion of your ticket contributing to

conservation.

The Tour

Two expert kiwi guides accompany each group of 10 guests for a 3 hour experience. The changing views are

breath taking as you experience the thrill of flying through changing landscapes from high above unexplored

forested valleys, to tight openings through the forest sub canopy, to walking amongst stands of giant ancient

trees.

Safety is paramount. Top of the line equipment has been sourced from around the globe and guides are all

trained to the highest standards. Rotorua Canopy Tours is an all-weather experience – the canopy in wet

weather is magical beyond belief and we'll deck you out to suit the conditions.

For Groups

We break the party into tour groups of up to 10 people, each with two highly trained guides, and take the

groups through the forest 30-45 minutes apart. This allows us to maintain our intimate small-group

experience, while keeping the groups close together. We can accommodate up to 50 pax in a half day, or for

larger groups, we recommend combining the Rotorua Canopy Tour with another half-day activity.

Volcanic Hills Winery

Overview

Although our winery (the place where we chuck the grapes in a bucket and stand on them) is in Rotorua, we

grow them on the oldest vines in the country in the best wine growing regions - Marlborough, Central Otago,

Martinborough and Hawkes Bay to get the best possible result. It's a frantic but intensely enjoyable couple of

months, culminating in a 30 hour ramble in a cotton wool wrapped truck from Central Otago deep in the South

Island, hauling tonnes of warm, ripe fruit back up to Rotorua. We have always loved wine. We met at a big wine

making company and wanted to do it ourselves. And that's what we did in 2009. Our wives weren't too thrilled

with the idea of uprooting our families all the way down to the South Island so we have set up camp at the

gondola in Rotorua. Our winery is at the base of the gondola where you can come in and see how the lorry

load of fruit turns into a bottle of our finest, of which we are immensely proud.Take the trip to the top of the

gondola to our tasting room with arguably the best view in Rotorua. After setting up Volcanic Hills in 2009, we

realised we didn't just want to make wine, we wanted to see people enjoying it. We built our perfect working

environment: a place to make the stuff near our families and a gorgeous tasting room in which to buy a glass,

kick back and enjoy with a cheese board or do a wine tasting with either of us as well as sell bottles directly to

our customers.

Springfield Golf Club

Overview

Rotorua’s need for a second 18 hole golf course in the late 1930's prompted a group of local golfers (mostly playing on the 9 hole course at the government gardens) to look for suitable land close to town on which to establish a new club. On 13 November 1947 a meeting was held and the new club was to be known as Springfield Golf Club. It was then up to the committee to find suitable land on which to establish a new course. It was seven months of, at times, frustrating negotiations before a satisfactory lease was finalised. The land at first was swampy and covered in barberry, gorse, broom and farm fencing. It took many years for the initial laying out of the course and this was done by an enthusiastic team of volunteers. This is the area in play today. In 1967 a new $50,000 clubhouse was opened and in 1973 an automatic water system was installed around each of the greens.

Over the years, the Club has been privileged to host some prestigious golf tournaments, including NZGA Men's Amateur Championship, NZ Junior Boys, NZ Maori Tournament, NZ Ladies Amateur plus The Tower Inter-provincials.
