Viva! Radio UpdateWho would have thought that our little radio show from Poole on a Mondayevening would attract so much attention? The Internet Radio programme ‘Old, Gold‘n’ Rare’ is broadcast every Monday at 7pm on the London bandwidth of RadioRotherhithe where DJ Martyn Brown presented the network’s first ever live outsidebroadcast during September. Pulling in more listeners than any other programme inthe programme controller's (Don Ridall) memory, this was, indeed, a landmark in thestation’s history. Now Martyn Brown has been asked to join other Internet Radio stations in order tobring his unique brand of music and chat to new listeners, however, Martyn says thathe’s quite happy where he is at present. Martyn is stopping the live shows inNovember but will continue to record specials for the network in an ongoing basis.

Old, Gold ‘n’ Rare still plays radio commercials for those who feature in this magazineso, if you’d like your company involved, do get in touch. www.vivaradio.co.uk

The name of Mantovani is synonymous with the very best in the world ofpopular music. During the 50’s and 60’s the inimitable “Cascading Strings”become internationally renowned, earning Mantovani the first of manygold discs for Charmaine which sold over 1 million copies.Monty, as he was affectionaly known to his fans left us in 1980 and it would be 30 yearsbefore professional musicians Paul Barrett and Frank Leprince recreated the 45 piececoncert orchestra in 2008 to perform live using the original scores kindly provided bythe Mantovani family.

2013 celebrates the 5th anniversary of “The Magic of Mantovani Orchestra” and thisbrand new concert will showcase many of Mantovani’s finest arrangements.Nostalgia and fond memories of “real” music will come flooding back as you becomeentranced once more with the iconic “Hits of the Sixties” performed live on stage withthat unique Mantovani sound. Tunes such as “Yesterday”, “Puppet on a String”,“Summer Place”, “Alfie”, “Strangers in the Night”, “I left my heart in San Francisco” andthe James Bond themes are just some that come to mind.I look forward to seeing many Viva! QR Magazine readers at the Pavilion Theatre,

Bournemouth on Sunday 14th April 2013. Please call 0844 576 3000 or www.bic.co.ukfor tickets. Paul Barrett

The nights may be getting longer, but produce in the gardenis still in abundance. Due to the later start of the seasonmost plants, especially vegetables, got off to a really slowstart, but when it did finally warm up in late July it meant thecrops came in bumper sized!

The month of October is a colourful one in the garden andthe onset of autumn marks the start of the celebrations andtraditions which unite friends and family and where we canshare good times within our community. Take the humblepumpkin for example. Prize winning or not, it’s a fruit whichwhen picked at the beginning of the month and left to ripen inthe greenhouse, is perfect for eating, just in time forHalloween.

The act of carving out the pumpkin is a family event in ourhouse and not a bit goes to waste. The outer skin is used to

create a scary face, topped with a pumpkin hat, the flesh from the centre makesamazing soup (if seasoned well) and the seeds can be toasted and sprinkled in thesoup or even better onto a loaf of home made bread. A family activity and meal in one… what other fruit offers so much for so little time and effort?

Autumn is the time to tidy up the garden, but don’t think of it as outdoor housework.Putting the garden to bed should be an enjoyable task, a time spent alone outside inthe brisk fresh air, where you can generate your own warmth through hard work, culminating in a great sense of satisfaction. It’s also an opportunity to be creative andplant out winter/spring bedding schemes. If traditional bedding is not your cup of tea,and you prefer something a little more ‘Earl Grey’, why not try this. Take a couple ofevergreen grasses, a few attractive twigs (from the red Cornus or twisted Hazel) andsome dried Allium stalks (with heads) and have a go with a little outdoor flowerarranging. Then introduce some autumn flowering plants, such as a lovely rustcoloured Chrysanthemum, shocking pink Cyclamen or a more subtle dwarf Aster andyou’ll have an impressive display to welcome your guests when they come to share inyour seasonal treats.

Other jobs to do this month:

• Divide herbaceous perennials and rhubarb crowns by lifting out with a fork andchopping into pieces with a spade. Replant with plenty of well rotted compost ormanure• Plant out spring cabbages and harvest apples, pears and nuts• Clear up fallen autumn leaves regularly• Ensure plant pots have good drainage, and consider standing pots on feet

• Pot up tender plants such as Fuchsias and Pelargoniums and place these in theglasshouse for over-winter protection

Making sense of Solar PV – CommerciallySolar PV has a bit of a mixed reputation these days. Some claim it is a technologythat can only work on the basis of unmerited subsidies; others believe it to be thesaviour of our energy problems, and some sell it with the promise that it willmiraculously eliminate all energy bills. The truth, as it so often is, lies somewhere inbetween.Solar PV is a globally proven technology, which can offerexcellent long-term financial paybacks. It is also a technologywith a very fast carbon payback, if the right products arechosen. It is certainly quiet, unobtrusive and non-polluting.Within commercial environments, it can make a substantialcontribution to the 24/7 electricity base load – and electricityconsumed at the point of production makes sense, economically and environmentally. Many commercial clients look at the payback of a PV systemand gain the initial impression that it does not match theirtypical return on investment requirements for capitalequipment. However, a PV system has a lifetime of 25 yearswith minimal – if any – service and repairs. Combined with astrong likelihood of increasing returns over the years, asenergy prices continue to rise. Few machinery or productionplant investments can say the same – and few can provideother, non-monetary benefits, such a positive publicity forthe organisation. A further aspect to consider is the low maintenancerequirement of a solar PV plant. In combination withsophisticated monitoring solutions and an SLA covering the day-to-day monitoring, aPV system does require very little looking after. This keeps cost and time efforts onbehalf of business owners, facilities managers and their team to a minimum.

Within a well formulated sustainability strategy, solarPV can be a major contributor, providing considerableenergy savings and excellent long-term paybacks withvery little service and management requirements.Professional partners for commercial PV installationssuch as Save Energy – who are also providers ofinnovative CIS Thin Film PV solutions for commercialinstallations – can provide full-service packages andreliable, high performance solutions that will makesense – both as investments and for the environment.Telephone: 01202 713813

The 14 day plan that’s guaranteed to clear upspots, regulate your weight and help you jump outof bed in the morning – or your money back!Maggie Ayre, the UKs leading Fitness Coach forYoung People has released her new onlineprogram.  She told us; “the 14 day nutrition andfitness plan has been devised specifically withteenagers in mind.  It is run via a FaceBook group,the food includes teen favourites such as pasta,burgers and chips and the exercise sessions take nolonger than 10-15 minutes to complete.  Despitethis we are seeing some phenomenal results in just14 days.”The plan, which includes workouts, with videodinstruction, daily food plans and motivational videosand articles as well as a supportive forum, has a100% success rate with participants commenting;

“I no longer crave junk foods such as chocolate as much as I used to, as these mealsare far more delicious!""There was a good variety of exercises and the way you showed them was at a verygood standard and I understood all of them.""I lost about 4 pounds and my skin was less red and I felt like it was much easier toget out of my bed in the mornings.""I feel that this plan has really helped me to become the person that I want to be andalso made me realise I can do so much more if I put my mind to it."But, it’s not just the teens, parent’s love it too;Kay told us; “it was a special experience for me and my daughter.  It brought uscloser together with a common goal........not something that often happens withyour teen at this age!  After a couple of days we felt less bloated, energy levels wereup and Carmel’s complexion by the end of the first week was clearer.  Cookingtogether in the evening was fun.   All in all it was brilliant, Carmel is now only drinkingwater and eating a much healthy balanced diet!“And Leigh added; “Lucy has always been a big sleeper taking an afternoon nap evenat 15 given half a chance. Whilst following this plan her energy levels soared and shewas a happier teen to be around.  Lucy also suffers terrible acne on her back, thiscleared up within 2 weeks too!  It was a joy to watch my teen enjoying food which Iknow will allow her to be as healthy as she can be.”This truly original program is just one in a series of initiatives from Maggie designedto improve the health and fitness of young people.

The next 14 day plan starts on Thursday, 4th October.  Enter online atwww.nutritionplansforteens.com.

It’s what every parent dreads, but bullyingbehaviour can be beaten.

We all want our children to have goodfriends and can’t bear the thought of thembeing bullied. But what can you do if youthink that it’s your own child who is thebully?

The first thing is to keep calm. It isimportant to know exactly what’s going onbefore you act. Was this an isolatedincident or is it something that has beengoing on for a while? Talk to your child’steachers and find out as much as you canabout what led up to the bullyingbehaviour, what triggered it, who wasinvolved, and so on.

Discuss what happened with your child. Why did they act in the way they did?

Bullying behaviour is often caused byother problems in a child’s life. They mighthave been retaliating against anotherchild’s aggression or teasing. Low self-esteem, unhappiness, stress, boredomand jealousy are also triggers.

Whether it’s a one-off or a long-termproblem, you need to tell your child thatall bullying is unacceptable. Encouragethem to think how the other child mustfeel – a role-play exercise may help.Explain that if it doesn’t stop now, thesituation could become worse and lead tosuspension from school or even policeinvolvement.

Set out clear consequences that you willimplement if the bullying continues, butgive your child chances to show improvedbehaviour. Set goals and reward themwhen they succeed.

Try to keep the atmosphere in your homeas calm and relaxed as possible. Childrenwill copy what they see and need to learnappropriate ways of dealing with anger, such as taking ten deep breaths or goingto a quiet place to cool off.

To boost their self-esteem, find an activityor sport that your child enjoys and givethem lots of praise and encouragement. You could divert their excess energy intojobs around the house – tidying up,watering the garden or walking the dog –anything that gets them moving in apositive way and earns them rewards.

Keep in touch with school to check thatyour child’s behaviour is improving. If youthink the situation is getting serious, don’tbe afraid to ask for help – your doctor orthe school can suggest a child psychologistor counsellor. The charities listed belowwill also give you good advice.

And don’t expect instant results. It cantake months or even years to changebullying behaviour, and the older the child, the harder it is – but it’s worth it!
