How to complete a self and peer assessment in Blackboard A Self and Peer Assessment is a type of assessment you can take within a Blackboard module. Self-assessment can be used to have a student grade/review their own work by following instructions set by the instructor. Peer assessment is similar but it allows students to grade/review other students work. In this example a Peer Assessment will be used - the Self-Assessment process is basically the same. First you will be asked to answer some questions before a deadline. Then you will be asked to assess other answers which may be your own (self-assessment) or those of other student’s on your course (peer assessment). How to complete a self and peer assessment in Blackboard

A Self and Peer Assessment is a type of assessment you can take within a Blackboard module. Self-assessment can be used to have a student grade/review their own work by following instructions set by the instructor. Peer assessment is similar but it allows students to grade/review other students work. In this example a Peer Assessment will be used - the Self-Assessment process is basically the same.

First you will be asked to answer some questions before a deadline.  Then you will be asked to assess other answers which may be your own (self-assessment) or those of other student’s on your course (peer assessment).  The process may or may not be anonymous depending on the settings that the course instructor uses.

Submitting a Self and Peer Assessment Item

You will only be able to submit a self and peer assessment during the submission date period set by the tutor.

1. Navigate to the Content Area that contains the assignment submission and click View/Complete Assessment.

2. The assessment submission window will open - it shows:

a. The title of the assessmentb. Instructions for the assessmentc. The number of peer evaluations that you are required to completed. The assessment submission deadlinee. The start date and deadline for you to complete your assigned peer evaluations

3. Click on the question (link in blue) that you wish to answer. This will open the Response submission form.

4. At the top of the form the question will be restated and you will need to enter your answer/submission text in the Response area.

5. Optional: if required, you can attach a file, as follows:

a. Click the Browse My Computer button and navigate to the file on your computer.

b. Click the Attach File button to upload the file. It should appear next to Attached files, along with a File Attached Icon icon.

c. If you need to attach another file, you can now click the Browse My Computer button and select another file for uploading. You will need to click the Attach File button to ensure the file is uploaded successfully.

d. If you need to delete an attached file, click the Do not attach link to its right in the Attached files list.

6. When you have completed your response, or wish to move on to the next question click theNext button. At the top of the page a confirmation message will appear.

7. On the page of the final question, click the 'Submit' button.

Evaluating a Self and Peer Assessment Item

You will only be able to evaluate a self and peer assessment during the evaluation date period set by the tutor.

1. Navigate to the Content Area that contains the assignment submission and clickView/Complete Assessment

2. Click on a Student Name (these are represented by User 1and User 2 in the example below) to begin evaluating their responses. If you are required to do a Self Evaluation, click your own name.

3. This will open the Evaluation: form where you will see details displayed in a box at the top of the page.

4. Below this you will see the response information that you are evaluating.

Question: The question that required a response.

Model response: Clicking this link opens a window with an example response that your tutor has supplied.

Question Points: The possible number of points for the question.

Submission: The response to the question. Any files that were attached are listed below with their file size and type.

5. The criteria section is where you can grade the submission.

There may be one or more criteria. Each criterion is numbered and can be accessed by clicking the number link. Each criterion may be allocated a different number of points. And some criteria may require you to add feedback, using the box provided

Allocate Points: If the criterion is worth 0 or a certain number of points, then tick the box if you wish to allocate the points.

Points Possible: If the criterion is worth 0 to a certain number of points, then type in the box the number of points you wish to allocate.

6. To continue through the Criteria or Questions click the Save and Next Criteria button. Note:You can skip to a certain question by selecting a number in the Question Tab below the details box.

7. If you wish to return to the previous Question or Criterion, click the 'Previous' button.

8. When you have completed the Evaluation, click the 'Submit' button. The Evaluations section will now be updated to show the score that you have given.

Viewing a Self and Peer Assessment Item

You will only be able to view your evaluated self and peer assessment after the evaluation finish date has been reached.

1. Locate the Self and Peer Assessment item in the Content Area

2. Click the View/Complete Assessment link

In the details box at the top of the page, you will be able to find your Average Percentage and Average Score for the assessment.

3. Below this are the Question Tabs which allow you to select the question you wish to view the evaluation for.

Within the question field are: the question, a model response link if available, and the submission response (including any attached files). The evaluation criteria for the question are also shown (as below).

If there is more than one criterion, you can click the number to go to that criterion. The Criteria section also shows who has evaluated your work, any feedback that they have given (if applicable) and the number of points that have been awarded.
