THE MEANING OF ASHES As in all the Catholic parishes of the world, our parish of the Holy Family in Kitchener began the season of Lent with Ash Wednesday, a time of preparation for Easter. For those who were unable to attend Ash Wednesday services, ashes were distributed on the first Sunday of Lent.

Long ago the hand of God once rested on this harbor, but now the weight, the painfully heavy weight of sin opens the source of black blood. Priest, you forgive too quickly. You comfort the bleeding wound of sin too quickly. O God, whose hand sweeps across the heights of the forest and above the oceans, the priest forgives too quickly! He comforts the bleeding wound of sin! Who thinks about sin

Fr. Kim Studwell, a Franciscan priest who is a popular guest at Sacred Heart Parish, gave our Advent reflection talk, using the genealogy of Jesus as a starting point.

Fr. Kim then examined how wounds in a family can be passed on from one generation to the next. He noted that these wounds can be revealed and

He illustrated this by looking at his own family, in which he is an

only child. Actually, he was the second child. His parents had had a miscarriage before he was born. And that wound affected his parents profoundly, and in turn Fr. Kim was affected even though he was not told about the tragedy. Through much intense prayer and soul-searching as an adult, Fr. Kim discovered the effect that the loss of his sister by miscarriage had had on his parents and on him. And with this awareness

was made possible.

As a Parish and Croatian community we cele-brated Stepincevo the feast of blessed Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac on Sunday, February 8, 2015. The Archbishop of Split-Makarska, from Croatia, Marin Barisic honored us with his inspirational homily in which he stressed the importance of witnessing for faith in God and values rooted in the teaching of Christ, regardless of place and time.

choir. The banquet and cele-bration in the banquet hall, the Velika Dvorana, was or-ganized by the parish and Cardinal Stepinac Kolo Group.

We were honored by many guests among them were Mrs. Spomenka Cek, the Consul General of the Repub-lic of Croatia. Archbishop

Barisic addressed all gathered at the banquet with inspiring words that were enthusiasti-cally received. In the cultural part of pro-gram, we had the Cardi-nal Stepinac Kolo Group that took turns with 5th,6th and 7th graders from the Croatian School
