President’s Messages & Announcements: • A Pres. Mike O’Sullivan Impersonator (aka PE Roger Robinson) welcomed us with “Hello! How is everybody?”

Roger then asked if we had any guests: Gerry Porter introduced our presenters, Pat & Jay Burbank and Socorro Simons introduced her sister, Maria Padilla.

• PE Roger, reminded us that the Annual Chili Cook-Off is tomorrow April 21. Help is needed to set up, tear down and man the Beer Booth. The Dave Melendy Blood Drive will be on Wednesday, April 25 from 1-5 in the Vet’s Hall parking lot. Please consider giving blood or helping to check donors in. He also told us that the Club Board Meeting will be held on Thursday April 26 at 5:30 also at the Lodge.

• Sue Robinson announced that the Viva Planning Committee held their first meeting and the theme for this year’s event is Oscar Night, Black & White. Sue also reminded everyone that this is our main fundraiser for the year and it is expected that EVERYONE will do their part by either, buying or selling Grand Raffle and event tickets, making or soliciting donations and/or signing up for one of the committees. Remember, this event funds the Avenues of Service for 2019/20. With all hands on deck, we can have a successful event.

• PE Roger reminded us that Mike O’Sullivan’s Step Down Party will be held on Friday June 29th at the Lodge. A sign up sheet was passed around.

• Cynthia Neer announced that more than 60 artists are participating in the 11th Annual California Sculpture Symposium at Camp Ocean Pines from April 21-28. On Saturday, April 28, the artists will show their artwork to the public. Sculpture by the Sea Exhibit and Sales will be open to the public from 10-5. A barbecue lunch will be available from 11-2 for a cost of $10 per person.

• Bob Putney presented a Paul Harris + 3 to Miguel Sandoval and a Paul Harris +2 & 3 to Roger Robinson.

• It was reported by Bruce Howard that Steve Ormondroyd’s chemo was successful and, after one more surgery, he will be joining us again. Steve actually stopped by the Chili Cook-Off on Saturday and he looks great! He is anxious to return to Rotary but the doctor cautioned him against being indoors with a crowd due to the increased possibility of catching a cold or ???

• Guest speaker, Jay Burbank, announced that the crew at Cambria Hardware are planning a Surprise Party (that apparently is not such a surprise) for their boss, Chuck McMillan on May 2nd for his 90th birthday. Everyone is invited to stop by to wish Chuck a happy birthday and enjoy a tri-tip sandwich.

Sheriff Dick

Sheriff Dick had a bad week this week and reported that Deputy Bob also was unable to catch anyone without their pin.

Viva planning has begun and we have a new logo. Watch out for more news to come about this year’s event and what you can do to make it the best Viva ever!

PRESENTATION: AROUND THE WORLD IN A MODEL A

Janet Meyers introduced our speakers, Pat & Jay Burbank.

Jay (with Pat manning the video) told us about how they have travelled 15 different countries in their Model A. In 1999, the Burbank’s went to Baja and met up with a group of Model A enthusiasts that enjoyed travelling the world in their antique cars. It sounded like fun, and we know Pat & Jay are always in the market for fun, so they signed on.

Their first trip, in 2001, was to Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Lichtenstein and Italy. There were over 50 cars on their tour. On September 11, while in Germany, they heard of the terrorist attacks but, realizing there was no way they would be able to get a plane ride home, decided to continue on their trip. They were approached numerous times throughout the trip by Europeans wanting to express their sympathy to this group of Americans.

In 2003, 24 cars, all driven by veterans, travelled through France and Monaco. They put a wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier in Normandy. When they arrived in Monaco, the parking area outside the casino had been reserved for their 24 cars.

2004 found them in Australia where they drove Nullarbor Plan, 1500 miles of desert. At one point, they drove 90 miles without turning the steering wheel. While in Cape Leevwin, the most south-westerly mainland point of Australia, between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the price of gas was $9 per gallon!

In 2008, the group toured 5 provinces of Canada and in 2012, toured Canada and the Pacific Northwest . 2013 brought them on a drive along the Lincoln Highway and in 2014, on a tour of Utah’s National Parks. Lest you think all this travelling wore these two out, in 2017, they made a trip to Spain and Portugal and then decided to embark on a trip through Gold Rush country.

Thank you to Pat & Jay for a very interesting and fun presentation.

ROTARY CLUB OF CAMBRIA FOUNDATION

The Rotary Club of Cambria Foundation, Inc. (our Foundation) is a qualified 501(c)(3) entity that has established a permanent endowment fund, the goal of which is to ultimately generate income sufficient to ease the pressure of fundraising.

Our Foundation receives the proceeds of fundraisers (e.g. VIVA, Chili Cook-Off Beer Booth, 4th of July Smoothie Booth) and allocates those proceeds by formula among the Rotary Club Of Cambria (our Club) Avenues of Service and the permanent endowment fund. Some of the income generated by the endowment is also allocated to the Club Avenues of Service.

Note that our Club member’s annual dues are remitted to Rotary International and our District 5240 for dues, and that our Club member’s annual pledges are used for the operating expenses of our Club. Neither your dues nor your pledge go through or to our Foundation.

Note also that our Foundation is separate from TRF (The Rotary Foundation), which was established by Rotary International and is involved in worldwide projects such as the eradication of polio.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE OPPORTUNITIES Join one of the Avenues of Service: In order to make our club THE BEST ROTARY CLUB IN THE WORLD, every member needs to consider helping in at least one Avenue of Service either by becoming an active committee member or volunteering to help with individual projects:

Club Service: focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan.

International Service: encompasses efforts to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the world and to promote world understanding and peace. It includes everything from contributing to Polio Plus to helping Rotary Youth Exchange students adjust to their host countries.

Vocational Service: involves Club members serving others through their professions and aspiring to high ethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills and expertise through their vocations, and they inspire others in the process.

Community Service: is the opportunity Rotary clubs have to implement club projects and activities that improve life in the local community.

Youth Service: allows Rotary to directly support our local high school, middle school and grammar school through scholarships, Interact Club support, STEM support, RYLA, Buy a Child a Book and other projects.

Work for a cause, not for applause. Live life to express, not to impress. Don't strive to

make your presence noticed, just make your absence felt
