As a young girl, preparing to return to school each fall was one of my favorite annual rituals. I was, I admit, one of those nerdy kids who looked forward

to going back to school after a long summer break. I loved school. The ritual for me was always the same. It was a thrill to pile the shopping cart high with items that symbolized what I considered at the time to be the key to my future. Secretly I’d imagine how each three–ring binder and Pee Chee folder would safely store the vast amounts of knowledge that I would be expected to consume, each pencil pouch would hold the instruments that would allow me to clearly express myself to my instructors and fellow scholars, and each ream of notebook paper represented the many pages of profound exploration into the various required subjects for the year. Once I returned home from the grand excursion I would count out the exact number of college-ruled sheets of paper to place behind each subject divider (yes, college ruled, not wide ruled…wide ruled was, well, too wide). I would label all the dividers properly with my instructor’s name and class times and then I would pack and repack my notebook pouch with just the right number of pens, pencils, erasers and of course a pencil sharpener and ruler - I’m not quite sure why I needed that ruler. Then on the first day of school I would wake up extra early, get dressed in the perfect clothes newly purchased just for the first day of school, carefully place my treasured notebook into my backpack, and leave for school excited about the year’s potential new adventures both inside and outside of the classroom. While I am no longer able to experience the excitement of the first day of school as a student, as a member of the Fortune School of Education Board of Directors, I experience the same first day excitement through the over 1200 students who will enter our classrooms this year. Under the dynamic leadership of Margaret Fortune and built on the research of Dr. Rex Fortune, all four schools: Hardy Brown College Prep in San Bernardino, William Lee College Prep, Alan Rowe College Prep, and Fortune School in Sacramento are working aggressively everyday to close the achievement gap that a large number of African-American and other students of color face as they navigate our education system. While focusing on African-American student achievement, the school’s Five Pillars -- the basic principles that have already proven successful with this community of eager learners -- are universal: •HighExpectations •MoreTime •Choice&Commitment •FocusonResults •Citizenship In honor of this special time of year, we invite you this week to learn more about this successful institution that is producing high achieving students who are prepared for college and citizenship in our democratic society not just here in San Bernardino but throughout the state of California. The Chameleon lizard is unique in that it can vary its colors depending on its environment.

One specific species can even change colors from bright to dark depending on its mood or blend into the surface they are walking or resting on so an enemy cannot see them. Now we humans cannot change colors but depending on blood flow we can go pale or flush red in the face from mood change or illness. However, when it comes to politics we can try to fool the people by changing political parties or our affiliation to decline to state just as Paul Leon has done. Paul S. Leon, who is running for the 52nd Assembly District has run and served the city of Ontario as a Republican, which is no problem. However, some national and local members of the Republican Party’s more conservative wing have made it more difficult for Mr. Leon to advertise his true identity to the public in this election. Do not get me wrong, I have a lot of good friends and know many people who are Republicans who do not try and hide their party affiliation. There is nothing wrong with the party but to try and fool the people as Mr. Leon is attempting to do is what I am addressing. Their policies on healthcare, immigration, labor, abortion, civil rights, voting rights, minimum wage, and small business does not sell well in a district that is 47% Democrat, 26% Republican, 19% Decline to State, 68% Latino, 17% White, 6% Black, 7% Asian and mostly blue color workers seeking a middle class living. So what Mr. Leon is doing is taking a page from the Chameleon playbook and changing his party to hopefully confuse some democratic voters who vote by last name or know him from his other attempts to seek higher office. Now on the other hand Pomona City Councilmember Freddie Rodriguez is poised to win this seat with the support of the Democratic Party, Speaker of the Assembly John Perez, Senator Norma Torrez and Assembly Member Cheryl Brown, labor unions of teachers, firefighters, police officers, and AFSME. However, there are no guarantees with the precarious nature of Special Elections. The voter turn out is expected to be less than ten percent. Historically this means Republican voters have the

edge because they vote at higher percentages than Democrats during off elections. Mr. Rodriguez comes well prepared for the fight and the seat. His scrappy fighting attitude as well as his time serving on the Pomona City Council, Pomona City School Liaison Committee, Legislative Committee, Pomona Property Owners Association, San Gabriel Valley Council of Government, Tri-City Mental Health, Pomona Walnut-Rowland Joint Water Line Commission and Vehicle Parking Committee will aide him in this position. As a product of local public schools, Mr. Rodriguez understands the many needs of our parents, educators, and students. His work experience in the healthcare field as an Emergency Medical Technician and serving with Tri-City Mental Health gives him great insight into our need for access and providers of health care to our aging population and young families trying to get started in life. Mr. Rodriguez is and always has been a Democrat and proud of it but does not let that stand in his way when working across the aisle with colleagues of other political parties while remaining true to his beliefs. Do not fall for the Chameleon trick of changing colors or political names to get your vote. To those kinds of people, it is a political game and not about serving people. I urge all of the voters in the 52nd Assembly District to vote for Freddie Rodriguez.

A new Issue Brief from the Afterschool Alliance highlights data demonstrating that afterschool and summer learning programs are excellent vehicles for helping to address elevated rates of

unemployment, poverty, homelessness and food insecurity in African-American and Latino communities. However, data in the Issue Brief also demonstrate that unmet demand for such programs is both high and persistent. The Importance of Afterschool and Summer Learning Programs in African-American and Latino Communities focuses on the ways afterschool and summer learning programs are providing essential services—such as a safe and supervised environment, academically enriching activities, healthy snacks and meals, and caring and supportive mentors—to children and families most in need of support. The Issue Brief also spotlights research on the success in this area of programs in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Boston and New York. A large body of research shows that afterschool and summer learning programs produce positive results, in part because they offer hands-on, engaged learning opportunities that complement, rather than reproducing what is already offered during the school day. According to the new Issue Brief, afterschool and summer learning programs bring much needed services to African-American and Latino communities by: • Ensuring children have access to academically enriching activities, helping close the opportunity gap between higher-income and lower-income families; • Tackling the achievement gap between White students and African-American and Latino students by increasing attendance, homework completion and engagement in school, and ultimately raising graduation rates and test scores; • Combating food insecurity among children by providing nutritious snacks and meals, which are especially important during the summer months when schools are out of session; and • Providing working parents with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that their child is in a safe and supervised space during the out-of-school hours. The Issue Brief draws on a number of survey and research reports, including the Afterschool Alliance’s America After 3PM Survey, which found that African-American and Latino children are much more likely to be enrolled in afterschool programs compared to their white peers. Approximately 2.1 million, or 24 percent, of African-American children and close to 2.4 million, or 21 percent, of Latino children are enrolled in

We need to expand funding so that all children can have access to the high-quality afterschool and summer learning programs that keep kids safe, inspire students to learn, and help working families.”

The UC Board of Regents will act on details of the appointment, including compensation, on August 8 during a special meeting in Riverside

and other locations, with regents connected by telephone. The effective date of the appointment to be considered by the regents is August 19. Interim Chancellor Jane Close Conoley, who has served in the role since Chancellor Timothy White left to become chancellor of the California State University system at the end of 2012, called Wilcox an excellent choice who will have her full support as he prepares to lead the Riverside campus. As provost and executive vice president at Michigan State University, Wilcox oversaw more than 200 academic programs, some 49,000 students and almost 5,000 faculty and academic staff. He helped lead a capital campaign that raised $1.4 billion and implemented major institutional restructuring and strategic initiatives, and expanded the university’s two medical colleges into Grand Rapids and the Detroit area. While he was the chief academic officer at Michigan State, the percentage of students from

underrepresented groups increased, academic credentials of entering freshmen rose, the average time to degree decreased, the graduation rate increased, and the percentage of students graduating with debt decreased. Wilcox, a first-generation college graduate, said he was honored to have been selected as chancellor during a particularly exciting time on the Riverside campus with the opening of its new medical school, expanding research opportunities and the potential to broaden the campus’s international reach. “My values and interests align perfectly with UC Riverside, one of the nation’s great research universities,” he said. “I look forward to meeting with students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the larger community, to learning and exchanging ideas and to working toward making Riverside the best it can be.” Founded in 1907 as the UC Citrus Experiment Station, UC Riverside today has almost 22,000 students and a faculty of 700 scholars recognized internationally for teaching, research and public service in a wide variety of fields. The campus has

launched a new school of medicine California’s first new public medical school in four decades and announced a new school of public policy. UC Riverside’s student body is among the most diverse in the nation. Nearly 60 percent of undergraduate students are the first in their families to pursue college degrees. The campus offers 80 bachelor degree programs, 46 master’s programs, 38 Ph.D. programs and 17 California teaching and administrative credential programs; roughly one of every eight students is involved in faculty-mentored research.

C al State San Bernardino has named Jacqueline Hughes as the university’s new associate provost for academic

Hughes, who is chair of teacher education at Cal State Bakersfield and is also a professor of teacher education, will take up her new post on Aug. 1, 2013, said Andy Bodman, CSUSB provost and vice president for academic affairs. Hughes, who has a substantial record of accomplishment as a faculty member and an academic administrator, has been active in faculty

union leadership at CSU Bakersfield and served as chapter president of the campus California Faculty Association, Bodman said. Hughes will replace Risa Dickson, who served as associate provost for academic affairs for nearly three years. Hughes also served as an assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies at Cal State Northridge and was a lecturer of teacher education at the Arizona State West campus in Glendale, Ariz. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Allegheny College, a master’s degree in counseling from Northern Illinois University and a

doctorate in educational psychology from Arizona State University.

T welve middle school science teachers from Riverside and San Bernardino counties spent three days earlier this week in the

Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Riverside to participate in a national pilot program requiring the use of a rich, web-based environment designed for teachers to reflect on their classroom practice. Called the Next Generation Science Exemplar System for Professional Development (NGSX), the website engages K-12 teachers in the major ideas of the National Research Council’s Framework for K-12 Science Education and the student performance expectations found in the “Next Generation Science Standards” — new standards that are rich in content and practice. Specifically, through a coordinated pathway of learning, NGSX allows teachers to access activities, videos, text, and other resources that illustrate what the new science instruction looks like, the goal being the creation of a clear roadmap for the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards. “Out of 36 teachers that applied, we accepted 12 teachers who teach grades 6-8,” said UC

They also get to post on the website their reflections on the content. Having web-based study modules helps the teachers immensely because they can work around their busy schedules to access the online content.” Shelly Munoz, a teacher participating in the pilot workshop at UCR, plans to share the knowledge she gained in the three-day workshop with more than a 100 teachers in the Menifee Valley School District at an event on August 6. Dena Pruden, an eighth-grade science teacher at Vista Heights Middle School in Moreno Valley, also plans to implement in her own classrooms the ideas and concepts she learned at the workshop. “This is the first time I attended a concept workshop like this,” she said. “My students like anything new and exciting that they can relate to

and that has real-life applications. With the new knowledge I plan to share with them, they will be more likely to stay engaged and pay attention to what we do in class.” The NGSX website development is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. To organize the pilot workshop at UCR, Simani received funding from the UC Office of the President.

T he Elites Social and Charity Club of Riverside awarded four scholarships to 2013 graduating seniors who plan

to attend four-year colleges. The scholarships ranged from $500.00 and were awarded based on academic achievement, school activities, community service, leadership activities, personal references and a personal essay. Each student was interviewed and the following students were selected: Poly High School, Felisha Carrasco; John North High School,

Elites Social and Charity Club Awards ScholarshipsShemiah Osipitan and Rondeline Williams; and Martin Luther King, Jr. High School, Olubukayo Akinyemi. The Elites Social and Charity Club is the oldest Black womans’ organization in Riverside. It was organized in 1962. The Elites have been awarding scholarships since its founding. Many students have benefited from their help and have gone on to become successful in their fields. According to Dr. Karen Davis, a successful

medical doctor, “I will never forget the help the Elites game.” Cassandra Washington another scholarship recipient of Perris, California, became an attorney and later a Judge in Nashville, Tennessee. Without the continued support of the community, these scholarships would not be possible. Fundraising activities throughout the year provide the funds for scholarships.

T he United States Senate finally stepped up to ensure that student loan rates would not double. There have been weeks of

back and forth, but now Senators say they will tie student loan rates to the federal funds rate, which means that in the short-run the lowest student loan rates will be 3.86 percent, up slightly from 3.4 percent. The bad news is that these loan rates may rise up to a rate of 8.25 percent, depending on prevailing interest rates. All other loan rates, including those for graduate student, for Parent PLUS loans, and others, will rise as well. It may seem a victory that student loan rates don’t rise much higher than they were in June. The connection of rates to the federal funds rate, however, connects the notion of supporting student to the oscillations of the economy. We need talented students to enter the labor force, as encumbered as they might be, whether the economy is rising or tanking. The notion that student loan rates will be tied to the federal funds rate offers students no security. One might argue that many have no economic security. The mortgage holder with a variable mortgage is subject to interest rate fluctuations as they manage a balloon payment. Those with underground mortgages are victims of interest rate variables as they try to dig themselves above ground. Surely, though, students who are financing their education in order to invest in the health of our nation should have different rules. When I graduated from college in 1974, interest rates hovered between 9 and 10 percent. The student loan interest rate was 2 percent. Why? My cohort was no more or less brilliant than any other. We were part of our nation’s plan for its future, which should be the case for today’s young people. Many hoped that the deal on student loan interest rates would take into account the federal funds rate (the rate to which the Federal Reserve Bank offers to banks) is well below 1 percent. From that perspective, even the existing rate of 3.4 percent suggests that the government is taking in more than it gives out. It’s complicated – there are other costs that must be considered in the lending process. It’s complicated, but

Student Loan ‘Solution’ is not Good Enoughshouldn’t our students get as close to the same deal that banks and others get? Allowing student loan interest rates to fluctuate, to the detriment of students in an environment when rates are certain to go up is to slap our students in the face. President Obama says he wants more students to graduate from community college or four-year institutions; we need more graduate and professional students in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs. It seems hypocritical to articulate these needs and then to undercut the means to meet them. There are more than one 1 trillion dollars outstanding in student loan obligations. The average student graduates with $27,000 in debt. Since nearly half of all students graduate with no debt at all, this means that the average debt for those who borrow is closer to $40,000. Many students with a talent for organizing, human resource allocation, or classroom teaching are diverted from their goals because their first priority is to pay student loan debt. We are starving our civil society institutions, and those who would serve them, by placing money over affinity and creativity. This has been happening for decades, but the current student loan dustup reminds us that we have not provided the safe space for our young people that we should. The Senate bill passed 80-18 with some Democrats rejecting it because of its flaws. Others, like the progressive Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), elected as a financial whiz and people’s advocate, chose to go with the one-year “okey-doke” rather than dig her heels in for the long run fight. In some ways, Warren is right. The finger in the dike approach saves students this year, and so it is better than nothing. When, though, is better than nothing simply not good enough. Stay tuned. The vote on reauthorization of the Higher Education Act will happen next year. Are students waiting and watching? What about parents? Is there a political lobby to turn this mess around?

W ith the start of the 2013-14 school year, this is an exciting time for public education not only in our region, but

also across our great state. As more than 412,000 students in San Bernardino County begin returning to school this summer, there are many changes and challenges in K-12 education that need to be brought to the attention of parents and families of children, and stakeholders in the education of our students. With the passage of the 2013-14 state budget, there is a seismic change in how K-12 public schools are funded. In addition, there’s a strong, on-going collaborative efforts taking place in our county among government, education, business and community leaders to support the success of all children from cradle to career. Plus, the 33 districts and more than 530 schools in our county are working to prepare for the new Common Core State Standards, which will be implemented beginning in the 2014-15 academic year. These changes and movements will have profound effects on the instruction our students will receive, as well as how education will be delivered. The landmark legislation that the governor instituted in collaboration with the California Senate and Assembly to change the school funding model is called the Local Control Funding Formula. Gone is the former archaic and cumbersome system of funding schools. The new funding formula starts with a per-pupil, base grant that schools and districts across the state will receive. Statewide, the base grant will start with an average of $7,643 per-pupil, according to the California Department of Finance. In addition to the base grants, school districts with higher populations of disadvantaged students - students in poverty, English Learners and foster youth – will be eligible to receive supplement and concentration grants. The new funding formula does address the important issue of having educational dollars targeted

Changes Ahead as Students Start Back-to-Schoolfor the state’s neediest students in terms of equity, but the new model in no way makes up for inadequate funding schools have suffered through in recent years. I am pleased to be taking part in the collaborative efforts that have been spearheaded by the County Board of Supervisors in developing a “countywide vision” in a variety of sectors to promote the prosperity of our region. Along with Cal State San Bernardino President Tomás Morales, we are co-chairing the education element group. We are working to create broad-based support for a countywide goal where all sectors of the community partner to support the success of every child. A “roadmap” for cradle-to-career indicators is close to completion. The roadmap will serve as a model to achieve a countywide vision where all students realize success in pursuit of their education and career goals. One of the changes in how education will be delivered to students will be through the new Common Core State Standards, which will be implemented during 2014-15. California has long been recognized as having world-class standards, but comparing educational outcomes with other states has been problematic since few other states had similar rigorous standards. That will all change with Common Core. Working with more than 40 other states, assessments will have more relevance with now comparable data. Through professional development and alignment of curriculum, progress has been made in preparing for the transition to the new standards. It is critically important for parents and families of students to stay informed of the changes taking place, so they can support their children to the fullest extent. Building greater awareness among community members of current issues impacting education grows support for our neighborhoods and schools. By working collaboratively toward a shared vision, we can all do our part to see that students are prepared for a successful school year and a promising future.

Wanda Scruggs, who was one of nine best speakers in the world at the Toastmasters

Dear Dr. Levister: I’m an 80-year-old ‘hottie’. I am mentally alert, naturally thin and full of energy. Lately, I’ve had trouble with stiffness. What can I do to improve flexibility? G.A.

Dear G.A.: Maintaining flexibility is an important component of a balanced fitness program, but as we age, it can become increasingly difficult to stay flexible. Staying flexible can help you prevent injury, as well as avoid muscle knots and tightness brought on by daily activities. It improves your posture, reduces stress, and generally keeps your body feeling youthful and agile. You can increase your flexibility by taking yoga, Pilates or tai chi classes. These are fun, meditative and help relieve stress. You can also follow a good stretching program. There are lots of flexibility exercises, and most are very good. One way I like to stretch is with an exercise toy called a foam roller. You can find them at most sporting goods stores. Using your own body weight, a foam roller stretches and relaxes the

Flexibility at Any Agefascia — connective tissue surrounding muscles and other body structures — which can tighten through injury or overuse. By rolling an area of your body along the foam roller, you can relax tight areas and improve blood flow to your muscles in the process. It might take some practice, and be sure to check with your doctor before using the tool. Most experts agree that the best time to stretch a muscle is after say a brisk walk, when your muscles are warm and blood is circulating through your body. Trying to stretch a cold muscle invites injury and damage to your body. Here are some other stretching tips: Begin your workout with a five- to 10-minute warm-up on cardiovascular equipment, such as a stationary bicycle, or by taking a short walk. This will increase your body temperature and warm up your muscles. Follow that with some stretches to hit individual muscles such as your hamstrings, thighs and shoulders. Stretch after exercise, as part of your cool-down. The purpose of a cool-down is simply to

give your body a chance to gradually slow down heart rate, reduce blood pressure and core temperature, and relax your breathing. Stretching for 10 to 15 minutes a day will help you regain your range of motion, make your joints more malleable and rejuvenate your body.

What motivated you to begin developing the Fortune School of Education charter schools?

The work of the Fortune School of Education, also known as Project Pipeline, began in 1989 because of our concern about the lower academic achievement between African American students compared to Asian and White students in public schools throughout California. In spite of the fact the this phenomenon known as the achievement gap can be found in most communities throughout the state and nation, we at Fortune School of Education had a belief that the performance of African American students could be substantially improved and that the achievement gap could be closed.

Actually, the initial focus of our work was on the preparation and credentialing of elementary and secondary public school teachers, and that continues to be a part of what do, although on a slightly smaller scale. With respect to teacher preparation, we instilled in our credentialed graduates the importance of looking at the test score data in their classes, examining their instructional practices, and taking steps toward closing the achievement gap, where the gap existed. Our influence on student achievement was through the teachers that we prepared. The focus on charter schools at Fortune School of Education began five years ago, when my daughter, Margaret Fortune, was appointed President and CEO. She had previously been involved in the establishment of the successful Dr. Rex Fortune

St. Hope Charter schools in Sacramento in 2003. Those schools included Sacramento High School and PS 7 K-8 school. Both have established quite an academic tract record in terms of significant improvement in the performance of African American students. They have been recognized by local and statewide organizations, including the California Department of Education and the California Charter Schools Association for their high API scores and student scores on the California Standards Test (CST’s). A few years ago, Ms. Fortune and several San Bernardino parent leaders studied the operation at St. Hope PS 7, with its API 913 score in 2010, and selected it as the model to replicate at the Hardy Brown College Prep (HBCP) School in San Bernardino.

How many schools does Fortune Schools operate? How many are planned or desired in the future?

As we speak, there are three schools, and we are about to open a fourth one in Sacramento – Alan Rowe College Prep School – in August. The Fortune School of Education submitted a charter proposal to the Sacramento County Board of Education to open ten schools in Sacramento County. That Board approved five schools to be open over a five year period, which began in 2010.

Since Fortune School is in Sacramento, how does Fortune School keep tabs on the operations at Hardy Brown Prep (HBCP) in San Bernardino?

Fortune School keeps a visible presence as well as an administrative presence at Hardy Brown. The Fortune School President and CEO, spent several days a week over the past nine months as interim principal at Hardy Brown College Prep. She brought in other staff from Sacramento as needed to support and address needs of the school. Board meetings for the Fortune School of Education have been held at the schools many times since its opening in August 2010. Staff at the school is in daily contact with staff at the Fortune School of Education on a variety of issues, including daily attendance reports, food service needs, maintenance and supply issues as well as concerns of the curriculum and instructional program.

How were you approached about beginning Hardy Brown College Prep?

Actually, my daughter, Margaret, was working with communities throughout the state as the Education Advisor to Gov. Schwarzenegger. She became acquainted with Dr. Paulette Brown-Hinds, who discussed the academic achievement

issues in San Bernardino as it related to African American students. Margaret also had conversations with parents there about trying to get some improvement within the school district. Their conversations led to the decision to file a charter school petition to the San Bernardino City Unified School Board of Education. This was a laborious process that ultimately led to their unanimous approval of the charter petition.

There is a lot of misunderstanding about charter schools. How do you dispel any myths about charter school education?

A lot of people in the general public, including many parents, think that a charter is a private school. So, we frequently make the point that in California, charter schools are public schools! District or county boards of education or the California State Board of Education must approve a charter petition in order for a charter school to exist. Charter schools have to demonstrate they operate a viable program; that they can muster a qualified staff and that they will protect the rights of students with special needs, and that they can competently fiscally manage an enterprise, in compliance with all applicable laws. With charter schools, there is oversight by the publicly-elected school board, which authorizes the school to be established. Unions will sometimes oppose

charters and will see them as “not belonging” because most do not pay membership dues. Of course we like to focus the conversation about our schools on what we have accomplished. Currently, there are not more than 6 schools in San Bernardino Unified School District that have higher ranking API scores than HBCP, which had a 798 API score last year. Parents make positive comments about our schools. Their children liked the unusual field trips to colleges, museums and even the state capitol last year. Not everybody welcomes the charter movement with open arms. They find a rare charter school that was mismanaged or had something illegal associated with it and they say “ah ha, that’s what charter schools do!”

What’s the next major goal for Fortune Schools, higher enrollment, new schools, better administrators ...?

For one thing, I have been studying the achievement gap for several years. What I know is that we don’t have to have these gaps, if those in power decide that it is their priority to eradicate the gap. I have written two books on this subject. My first book, Leadership on Purpose, discusses what principals and other school leaders do to acquire high performing, high minority schools. In my most recent book, “BridgingtheAchievementGap: What Successful Educators and ParentsDo”, I identify twenty high performing schools with mostly African American and Hispanic students and describe the leadership characteristics, the teaching practices and the parent engagement strategies that I believe account for their success. I documented these schools that have 800 API scores or higher and also have high CST scores in mathematics. One of my interests is to share the findings of this research and encourage other institutions and individuals to use these references in their planning as Fortune School of Education did with the opening of these charter schools. DVD that takes some of the lessons presented in Chapter 4 of the BridgingtheAchievementGapbook and presents them in a way that parents or guardians can have a handy reference. We hope that others will accept the challenge of leadership to address the achievement gap as we describe in Chapter 5 of the book. Fortune School will continue to support the schools we open to assure that we meet the increasingly higher expectations that we face now as the new Common Core State Standards and its related assessment program called Smarter Balance are being implemented beginning this year. Fortune School of Education will continue to seek out prospective educators for its higher education program. Our mission is to prepare caring and competence educators who are passionate about helping low achieving student to excel. This remains an on-going priority with

us. We are exciting about the young, dedicated staff that we have acquired in the charter schools and we are equally excited about aspiring leaders we attract to our higher education programs.

What is the most rewarding part of Fortune charter schools?

The gratification is that our students, school staff and parents prove the point that previously low income African American students who attend the Fortune Schools perform well on multiple measures including their attitudes towards school, their growing respect for their peers and adults at school who help them and, by the way, on those high stakes state tests that they are passing at increasingly higher rates. Evidence of the success of our work is our reward.

Assembly Member Jose Medina of the 61 Assembly District recently hosted an event called Senior Scam Stoppers at Moreno Valley Senior Center. Seniors can be vulnerable and preyed upon by unlicensed or

devious contractors, so Assemblyman Jose Medina is doing something to help. The seminar was offered to seniors and caregivers alike. During the two-hour session, a panel of experts from the California State Licensing Board discussed ways seniors can protect themselves against identity theft, home and auto repair fraud. Seniors were also educated on the changes to Medicare. The majority of the seminar gave seniors the opportunity to have their questions answered. “I just bought a home. I need a lot of help as well as a lot of seniors. We don’t know whom to turn to. I’m glad I came and had my questions answered,” said 69-year-old Dessie Clark who attended the event. Many seniors were relieved to have experts come to educate them. “It was a pleasure to host this seminar, I’m glad so many seniors were assisted,” Assembly Member Medina said.

Fortune School of Education is an organization focused on closing the African American achievement gap by preparing students for college starting in kindergarten. At Fortune, we strongly believe that we can achieve a well-educated African American citizenry in California within our lifetime. It requires a relentless focus on educating our children to a level of excellence. Furthermore, our charge requires long-term commitment and discipline to stay the course until African American children are well-educated as a matter of course. At Fortune, we believe it’s important to have educational institutions that focus unapologetically on the academic preparation of African American students. We are honored to fulfill that role.

I’m happy to report that the San Bernardino City School District Board of Education renewed the charter petition for Hardy Brown College Prep

for another 5 years. This support from the school district that authorized Hardy Brown College Prep is an important recognition of the strong academic performance the school has achieved since its opening in 2010.

Hardy Brown College Prep is the highest performing charter school in the City. Our student academic performance lends credence to the idea that given rigorous instruction and a culture of high expectations, African American children will demonstrate a high level of scholarship. My expectation is that Hardy Brown College Prep, currently a K-6 campus, will continue to grow, adding a grade level a year until we are K-8. Our big goal is to develop Hardy Brown College Prep into a comprehensive Pre-K through 12 school system. This will allow our families to have a seamless, high quality education for their children.

I am proud to lead a nonprofit school of education created by my parents 24 years ago in 1989. I owe a debt of gratitude to my parents for the strong educational tradition they created. They also left the organization in excellent financial health which positioned me to invest in the San Bernardino community by opening Hardy Brown College Prep. My parents created a school of education to credential diverse teachers. My contribution to their legacy is the creation of a network of charter schools focused on closing the African American achievement gap. We currently serve 900 students in two regions of California—San Bernardino and Sacramento. These communities have the second and third largest Black student populations in the state. Because of the foundation my parents left me, we are able to credential and train our own teachers and principals—a professional development capacity that is a key component to our success with students.

Most people don’t know that, like

many African Americans, I have diabetes. Exercising and eating right is something I have to focus on every day. It’s tough. I’m hoping that our healthy school lunch program through Revolution Foods will help my students avoid the pitfalls of diabetes. This year, we are also adding a daily yoga program to Hardy Brown College Prep like we have at our three other campuses in Sacramento.
