What’s your favorite summer activity?

Question of the Month?Lisa Hoffman: Bon Fires by the pond.

Jon Barnes: Sitting on the porch swinging with my beautiful wife and watching our maniac german shepherd run around the yard.

Deb Miller: Here little fishy fishy!

Nicole Barnes: BOATING ON THE LAKE!!!!!

Jennifer Smith: “Camping” in an RV with A/C, IPOD, DVD and WIFI.

Rick Rupiper: Softball

Mike McManigal: Fishing!

Sue Nordstrom: Our July Family reunion in Michigan - lots of people, lots of food, lots of fun, good conversation, hayrides through the woods, games and people galore! It takes place on an older cousin’s farm and the younger cousins make things happen. Stories are told, songs are sung, old and new talents, new babies - just good old fashioned FUN! Ours is the best ever. Doesn’t everyone say that?

Dennis Sievers: Fishing and riding

the motorcycle.

Sandy McManigal: Camping!

Deborah kraft: Sitting on the deck listening to the birds, with a cup of coffee (or wine, depending on the time of day) and a good book.

David Rief: Swimming.

Mary kennedy: Camping and cooking out.

Shirley Paterson: Fishing at DeSoto bend but I guess that ended our entertainment very early. The last time we were there we caught a nice walleye and 0 crappie. Maybe next year??

Carol Morgan: Can’t come up with one favorite activity—there are too many! Enjoying fresh tomatoes is one of them.

Sheila Sturm: Having t ime to spend with the kids when they aren’t in school, including sleeping in with them!

Cathy Steenson: Gardening. Even though it means the weeds will probably win again.

kella Sales: my absolute favorite thing is spending time with my grandson, Carter.

Danielle Welker: Taking Ava swimming and going to the zoo.

Sandra Rowe: My favorite summer activity is on my client’s yacht in Sardinia, Italy sipping Prosecco and watching the sail boat races.

Val Jacobsen: Motorcycle trips with great friends and hanging out with girl friends at the pool.

Next month’s question due by August 18th...

Name a movie you can watch over and over and never tire of it.

What’s Up at CECC?Submitted by Linda Brewer

If all the cars in the United States were placed end to end, you’d probably be

on the Lincoln Highway at 7:30 am.

Though it seems hard to believe, by the time you read this, the beginning of the school year will be less than a month away. In light of this, we’d like to remind everyone of what Crescent Early Childhood Center is. We are a fully licensed child care center and preschool provider that serves children from ages 2-2. Having a licensed, community- based center in a small town like Crescent is becoming a rarity - the costs of providing child care and the extensive licensing procedures are causing even larger centers in the metro area to close their doors. We are proud that we have been operating in the heart of Crescent for over 5 years and have cared for hundreds of kids in the area. During the school year, we offer full-time child care for kids 2-5, before and after school care for older kids, including bussing to and from Crescent School, and a preschool program each morning from 9:00 - :30. We are open during school breaks and snow days, and offer hourly, daily and weekly rates. If you are looking for care for your children, we urge you to give us a call, check out our website or stop by for a visit. In our summer program, we spent a couple of weeks studying about the solar system and America’s space exploration program. We drew pictures of what we thought life on other planets might look like, walked around on moon shoes (sponges) to get a feel for walking on the moon and designed our own spacesuits. The highlight for everyone was the morning we spent launching our own rockets - made of plastic film canisters and powered by Alka Seltzer and water. You would be surprised how high they fly! To coincide with the 4th of July, we spent a few weeks talking about the American Revolution and WHY we celebrate Independence Day. We learned about the reasons the American Colonies wanted to be independent - and spent a morning playing a game meant to illustrate the unfair taxes imposed by King George on the colonists. Each child was issued 5 poker chips, and then had to pay a “tax” to have snack, use the restroom and anything else the “king” decided was tax-worthy. The kids really got into the game, trying to find ways to avoid the tax, bribing the tax collector, and borrowing from their classmates to cover their taxes - and talking about how they could revolt against the unfair treatment. We always have a back-to-school bash at the end of the summer, and this year it will be Monday, August 5. We will have a bounce house, treats, games and water activities. If your kids have attended the center, or you would like to stop by and check us out, feel free to join in the fun. Our contact information is: phone, 72-545-906, email, [email protected] and our website is CECCKids.com.

The Pottawattamie County Community Foundation (PCCF) is a non-profit community foundation established as a partnership of rural and urban citizens dedicated to improving the lives of all residents of communities in Pottawattamie County. In an effort to support those affected by the challenges of the flood of the Missouri River, PCCF has elected to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to contribute to the efforts through our Disaster Relief Fund.

Donations can be made in support of the flood relief effort on our organization’s website: www.ourpccf.org. After some technical issues with our Google Checkout during the initial stages of the Disaster Relief Fund; we recently deployed a PayPal Checkout to allow all donors an error-free donation experience. We sincerely apologize to any potential donors who may have gotten an error message with the previous checkout and encourage you to visit our website again. 00% of the monies received will be dispersed for disaster relief efforts in our area. PCCF continues to be a dedicated partner in the flood prevention and assistance efforts that are affecting our neighbors and friends living in our community.

Applications for Disaster Relief Grants are now available on our website at www.ourpccf.org or you may contact the PCCF office at (72) 256-7007 for an application. Disaster Relief Grants are grants that are available to two types of groups: Individuals/Neighbors, and Agencies/Government Entities.

Individuals/Neighbors (A group of individuals working together on a project) may apply for assistance for a specific need related to the disaster up to $500. (i.e. moving expenses, storage units, pump/generator purchase and/or maintenance, appliance replacement and/or repairs, household repairs, home furnishings, respite child care, etc.)

Agencies/Government Entities that are doing innovative and meaningful work providing services to residents within the Pottawattamie County Community Foundation’s (PCCF) mission to improve the lives of all residents during and after a disaster situation. The maximum grant awarded for agency services is currently $2000; depending on the level of donations that amount may be increased in the future. Agencies who were recipients a Community Grant in the past year are eligible to apply for this Disaster Relief Fund, as well.

The Disaster Relief Grants Program is a new program that is growing due to the amazing response of concerned residents in Pottawattamie County who desire to help those affected by disasters in our area. As with any competitive process, the grants are awarded to the applicants whose project best fits our mission. PCCF regrets that funds are not available to recognize the meaningful work of all who apply. For more information about this topic, please contact the PCCF office by calling 72-256-7007 or e-mail us at [email protected].

Lettersto the Editor

I was thinking about all of the people in your area that I have met. Just wanted you to know that our prayers are with Western Iowa.

Take care, Francie O’Leary, Project ManagerLincoln Highway Heritage Byway

• I have not been back to Crescent for several years, so when I drove into town along the Old Lincoln Highway, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the new Veteran’s Park just on the edge of town! What a gem! When I entered the circular plaza, I viewed the curved wall with individual name plaques honoring local veterans who served our nation in all the armed services since at least WWII. What a great idea! Opposite the curved wall, across the plaza, is a low “seating” wall where one can view the wall of plaques, and perhaps reflect on the sacrifices made by those neighbors, friends and relatives who served and protected ourselves, the nation we lived in and our way of life. A bronze American eagle graces the center of the plaza and adds to the patriotic flavor of the park. Beyond the plaza is a large gazebo suitable for many activities, picnicking being the obvious first choice. But I see it could also be great for outdoor weddings, scout meetings, breakfast-in-the-park, cookouts, a place to take the kids for lunch and to let them frolic on the lawn. Few communities the size of Crescent have such a beautiful, useful park. Crescent is a great setting for this sparkling jewel of a park.
