Mayor’s Corner The Pottawattamie County Bicycle Trail committee has been formed. Crescent is represented well and we are working on the final alignment from Council Bluffs. We want to hook on to Big Lake park, which connects directly to the Bob Kerry Bridge, and bring potential customers to our businesses. Then we take the trail north through town to Missouri Ave., across Pigeon Creek to the levy, then north to Ski Hill Loop to Hitchcock Nature Center, through the “Honey Creek Cut” and down into Honey Creek where the traffic is significantly reduced on the Lincoln Highway. Crescent is the gateway to Hitchcock Nature Center. It is surprising to me the amount of people that have never been to the best park in all of Iowa. If Crescent highlights this we could capitalize on the park and really use that to our advantage. It would change our town if we could walk or ride to get an ice cream, pizza, or just get some exercise without the fear of getting mowed over on the highway. We might even run into friends or neighbors while out and about. Heck we might even get to know some of them. At the strategic planning meeting a few weeks ago a bike/walk trail, improving our main street, and cleaning up were the highest rated items for our community. It all needs citizen involvement, don’t be afraid to get involved! Together we can make this the BEST place to live. —Brian Shea

What’s Up at CECC?Submitted by Linda & Mindy Brewer

As part of our opening for preschool, the kids take turns dressing the weather people and putting up weather symbols on a flannel board. One day in May when it was Dylan’s turn, it snowed. The next time it was his turn, it was 100 degrees. “It’s very confusing,” he said. We agree. We did take advantage of some spring-like days to go for some walks. One day we looked for signs of spring. We picked dandelions, violets and daffodils. We cut branches off flowering crab apple trees. We saw robins and a few bees. We saw green grass and leaves just starting to come out on trees. As Claire said, “Crescent is very beautiful today.” Another day, we put on gloves and carried bags and picked up litter along Johnson St. and Jackson St. Since we didn’t get to help on Crescent Clean Up Day, that was our way of “pitching in”. Maybe because preschoolers are closer to the ground, they found a lot of litter that we teachers had walked right by. We also made May baskets and delivered one to a neighbor. When the kids found out they could ring her doorbell and then run away, they were very excited. May baskets are a tradition that used to be more popular in Crescent, at least in our section of town. For Mother’s Day, we made trivets. The best part was breaking up old glass plates with hammers, under cover of a sheet, of course. Then we fit the pieces in grout on boards and had our own individually decorated trivets to give Mom or Grandma. Even a couple of school-agers made one for Mom because who can pass up smashing plates with a hammer? By the time you read this, it will be too late to see the program, but CECC had a little presence in the South Sudan. Awhile back we collected vitamins and pain relievers for two KETV reporters to take on a medical mission to South Sudan with a doctor from the University of NE. Med Center. We also had all the kids draw a picture and sign it, to be handed out to children who came to the clinic there. A family member is the executive news producer for KETV and she is helping edit a special to be on their station on May 23. She tells us that a short part will be of someone giving those pictures to children. She says they seem so happy to have a picture they can keep. We are looking forward to watching the show and pleased we made a tiny difference in their lives. The Council Bluffs Library is, once again, bringing Story Time to Crescent. A librarian will read stories and do other activities with kids in Crescent on Thursday’s at 11:30 in the community room of the fire barn in June and July. We hope you will take advantage of this program and bring your kids. It’s fun, and Crescent is the only town outside of Council Bluffs where she goes. It would be great if she had lots of listeners besides CECC kids. CECC will be taking part in the city-wide yard sale on June 7th and 8th. We have quite a few books, games and toys we are willing to part with. So if you are in need of such things, stop by the church yard. Our summer program will begin on May 29th with a picnic, hopefully at Big Lake. If you are looking for summer care for your children, give us a call at 712-545-9016 or check the website at www.cecckids.com.

Stamping Out Hunger The Stamp Out Hunger food drive was a great success again this year; it just keeps getting better and better. Thanks to our amazing mail carriers and giving community, we collected 825 pounds of food and $570 in cash. That much money will help us purchase more than 3500 pounds of food! We also fed more than 100 people lunch, with Albert Erixon and Chuck Hildreth, grilling up hot dogs and hamburgers on Denny’s Place outdoor grill. Everyone who donated food or cash was entered into a drawing, which consisted of donations from some of our wonderful, local businesses. Thank you to Henry’s Diner, Loess Hills Vineyard and Winery, Pink Poodle, Crescent Color & Cuts, Crescent Feed Store, Denny’s Place, Meyer Automotive, Kief’s Full Throttle Bar & Grill, Crescent Storage, and C & A Scales!

Many Thanks!. . .The fol lowing companies made a donation to our school for our family night: Casey’s, Hitchcock Nature Center, Prairielands Chiropractic, Mid America Center, Pump It Up, Target, Storm Chasers Baseball, and Rose Children’s Theater. We raised $350 to benefit our science enrichment programming for our students.

A Special Thank You!...The Fraternal Order of Eagles in Council Bluffs generously donated $400 to Crescent Elementary. Many thanks to this organization and a special thank you to grandparent Paul Shomshor for attending the dinner and accepting the donation on behalf of Crescent Elementary.

We need your help!...We are trying to provide additional current event materials for our classrooms. We have the opportunity to get free copies of Time for Kids for all students. Pooling Their Resources Shown below: Jeremy Sindelar and Troop 3 pullin’ together as part of Jeremy’s Eagle Scout project. He’s been involved in several phases of the pool reopening. Starting with the chili feed fundraiser, Jeremy and a fellow scout cleaned tables and helped take them down at the end of the fund raiser. His troop also helped with painting the pool shower house, the outdoor furniture and spent time cleaning the grounds and pool. So Thank You Jeremy and Troop 3!

3rd Annual Lincoln Highway Buy Way Yard Sale

This year we are trying something different. A form on our website has been created so that people can register their sales for the Buy-Way. If you go to www.IowaLincolnHighway.org, you can see an announcement for the sale right on the front page. Click “Tell me

more” and you’ll go to the main information page for the sale. There, just click on the link that says “click here to sign up your sale for the Buy-Way.” By the end of July you’ll be able to print a complete list of sales in your area. This will eliminate the need for flyers. We are also looking for volunteers to assist with the event. If you have any ideas that would help us or any questions feel free to call Deb Rothmeyer at 712-263-8356 or email [email protected] Junk Cars!

Please remember...if you live within in the city limits, we have a junk car ordinance. The city is taking steps to enforce this ordinance. If you have an unlicensed vehicle on your property for more than 30 days the city has the ability to issue one fine per vehicle until they’re removed. So please take the steps needed to have them removed before fines are issued. Our goal is to make our city clean and keep it clean!
