A short overview of some of our activities includes: For our future trips around Australia we have been learning about our States and Territories. It’s important to know where they are located on a map (so we can get there), their capital cities as well as some of the emblems such as flags, flora and fauna. We have been doing 4-Roles as well as Guided Reading and have used some fantastic books such as Puppy Fat and Belly Flop by Morris Gleitzmen, Blueback by Tim Winton and we have just started our 3 rd Andy Griffith’s book from his Henry McThrottle series (Mascot Madness, Treasure Fever and Pencil of Doom). Welcome Back

Term 4 promises to be a very busy term finishing

off the year and finalising plans and organisation

for 2015.

Students have returned happy and refreshed and

settled back into teaching and learning programs.

We welcome several new students and their

families into our school community and trust you

find Yakamia Primary School to be a warm,

friendly and safe school where relationships are

valued, developed and fostered.

Hats

With the days warming up rapidly, please be

reminded that we have a “no hat, no play” policy –

during Term 4,. All students need to have a

broad brimmed hat or legionnaire cap when

playing outside. School hats are required for

excursions and can be purchased from the

Canteen Uniform Shop.

Assembly

A big well done to the Year 3/4 students of Room

23 for hosting the last assembly. What talent you

all displayed!!

Next week’s assembly will be hosted by the Year 3

students of Room 22. The school looks forward to

all family and friends attending.

Faction Athletics Carnivals

Tuesday 28 October will be the Junior Faction

Athletics Carnival, with Senior Jumps and

Throws being held on the same day. The Senior

Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 30

October.

A program with the events in which your child is

participating, will be sent home once this

information is finalised at the year group sport

meetings. Parents are encouraged to come on the

day to support their child and help out with the

program.

Please ensure your child is in his/her faction

shirt, has a hat and is wearing sunscreen. It

is also a good idea to pack extra food and drinks

as students often are more hungry and thirsty

than usual. Lunch orders are to be marked

with child’s faction not room number.

Albany Primary Schools Spelling

Championship

This event was staged at Spencer Park in the last

week of last term and whilst we didn’t secure

either of the major prizes, the students who

represented our school prepared well and did

their best on the day.

The Year 4/5 competition was a close contest and

even after a tie break the 2 best teams Denmark

PS and Flinders Park PS could not be split and as

such shared the winning prize. Denmark

completed a great day by also winning the Year

6/7 competition and as such will host the event in

2015.

Anglican Art Awards

We would like to congratulate the following

students for being selected as winners in the

Anglicare WA art Competition that was held as

part of National Families Week.

Moving Schools or Locations in 2015?

It is crucial that you inform the school of any

intention to move from Yakamia PS in 2015. Our

funding and the way we organise classes is

dependent on an accurate understanding of

student numbers in each year level across the

school. From here on in, and for the remainder of

the year, notifying us if your child will not be here

in 2015 will assist greatly when it comes to

planning for the new school year.

Class Requests 2015

Parent requests in relation to class placement in

2015 need to be in writing and addressed to Miss

Blythe. The deadline for these is Monday 10

November. Please be reminded that whilst all

requests will be given due consideration there

may be a range of factors that may not allow all

requests to be granted. Parents also need to be

aware that once classes have been set it can be

difficult to make changes to the placements that

have been made.

ANZAC Centenary –

Shopfront Displays

Albany’s ANZAC Centenary

Commemoration scheduled for the last week in

October is shaping up as one of the biggest events

in the City’s history. Huge numbers of visitors

are anticipated. Over this ANZAC

commemorative period this year, an innovative

partnership initiative will see schools in the

Great Southern matched with businesses in the

Albany CBD that will result in the installation of

ANZAC-themed shopfront displays. These

displays will involve student work related to the

centenary of ANZAC and should be a vibrant

addition to the shopfronts lining the streets in

this area. Look out for these from Monday 27

October to Thursday 6 November 2014! Our

display will be at Main Street Bags & Shoes.

Tribes

Tribes still remains the basis for our focus on values across the school and has been in place

for many years. The process aims to teach students processes to cooperate, interact with

others and to build a positive culture for learning and human development throughout the

school. The Five Tribes Agreements form the basis of our relationships in the school and are

consistently supported throughout all classes.

The Tribes Agreements are as follows:

1. Personal Best

2. Appreciation - No Put Downs

3. Attentive Listening

4. Mutual Respect

5. Right to Pass

Cup Cake Day

The student councillors had a great time

participating in Kids’ Cancer Project’s annual

Cupcakes for a Cure on 19 September. They

baked 150 cupcakes on Thursday and then set up

a cake stall in the hall on Friday selling the cakes

for $2 each. The cakes were a huge success and

the councillors raised $190.

Move More, Sit Less

How much sitting is too much?

Even if children are very physically active, they will still benefit from limiting the amount of time

that they spend sitting or lying down (except when sleeping) in as many ways as possible.

Use of electronic media for entertainment should be limited to no less than 2 hours per day.

Parents can

Give gifts like skipping ropes, balls or kites to encourage active play

Set a ‘no screen time’ rule at dinner time and before school

Make your child’s bedroom a TV and computer free zone

Reward your children with a trip to the park, instead of TV or computer time

There are many opportunities to sit in our daily lives. The key is to find opportunities to move.

What will you do?

Talk Soon Talk Often

In response to advice that parents needed support in their role as the primary sex educators of their

children, WA Health has developed Talk Soon Talk Often: A guide for parents talking to their kids

about sex. This free resource has been developed to help parents initiate regular and relaxed conver-

sations with their children about sexuality and relationships. This resource is also an invaluable re-

source for teachers which can help to give age appropriate guidance for answers to questions. Please

consider sharing this link with your parents and wider school community perhaps in your newslet-

ter. http://www.public.health.wa.gov.au/cproot/4011/2/TSTO_V2.pdf
