NATIONAL RIFLE MATCHES

NWTFS Members attend the NationalRifle Matches. For over two weeks inJuly we had 6 NWTFS memberstraveling and competing at the NationalRifle Matches held at Camp Perry, Ohio.Charisma Owen, Mary Owen, TannerMarchand, Alex Cottrill, Amanda Cottrilland Robert Davis were part of the TexasState Rifle Association’s Junior ServiceRifle Team competitive effort this year. The Juniors and parents had prepared forthis even with untold hours of practice, traveling and target pulling. For mostTexans this was a 2,600 mile round trip.Once the competitions began the teammembers were up way early and began

shooting not long after sunup. Somedays the matches would last until lateafternoon. The Nationals can be veryunforgiving. A simple error can erasea lot of hard work. One bad shot canmove a score down 20 or 40 spotswhen there are over 1,200 shooters inthe match. There were often six relayson two ranges with 250 combinedfiring points. The first big gain forNWTFS members was TannerMarchand earning four introductorypoints towards Distinguished Riflemanby placing in the top ten percent ofshooters in the Small Arms FiringSchool (EIC) Match (Leg Match).Director Mary Owen shot a good scorein her second SAFS rifle competition.Charisma Owen, Alex Cottrill andTanner Marchand each shot personalbests during the week. During theindividual matches they had to rely ontheir training and discipline to managewindage adjustments at 200, 300 and600 yards. Once the team competitionsbegan they could combine their

experience with teammates and coaches.NWTFS Juniors Charisma and Tannerled one of the TSRA Junior six personteams in a”bullseye” match. During theHearst Doubles (two person teammatch) Charisma placed 5th among allJuniors, Tanner 7th and Alex 13th.Charisma, our most experienced Juniorcompetitor, shot well and steady allweek long. Her average score placedher in the top group of TSRA youth.Alex started out the week ofcompetition with a little over twomonths of Service Rifle training yet hemade good progress. Next year all threeof these young people will likelycontend for the top TSRA Junior team. The state of Texas did very well at the2017 Nationals. Our adult Gold Teamwon the Leatherneck Trophy for thethird year in a row. This is for the RattleBattle competition, a six shooter teamwith 8 targets and 64 rounds per shooter. They have 50 seconds to hit as manytimes as possible at 600 yards then moveto 500 yards to do it all over again. Ifthey have ammo left they process to the300 and 200 yards lines. Our JuniorGold Team placed 5th among youthteams and shot 100 or 200 points abovetheir usual score. Charisma and Tannerwere on the Junior Silver Team and

scored not far behind Gold. Alex shotwith a team of Pennsylvania, WestVirginia and Kentucky Juniors. HisTSRA training was good enough that hewas made a swing shooter and was givenammunition from other shooters once heshot all his ammo. Texans won most ofthe major individual trophies at theNationals, just like last year. TSRACoach Robert Davis only shot one matchat Camp Perry and that was during theCMP Games after the team events wereover. He earned a bronze medal in theSpringfield Match despite saving oneround of ammo during a Rapid Firestring. During their time at Camp Perryour members got to spend time on aLake Erie beach and were treated to anight out at Kevin Sylvester’s home inAttica, Ohio. He feeds 35 to 40 peopleevery year as his way of supporting theteam. His home is officially TSRANorthern Outpost #1. Kevin proudlyflies a Texas flag. Awards night at theNationals made the Juniors proud towear their pale blue TSRA shirts as they

watched many Texas adults and Juniorswalk across the stage for trophies. TwoJuniors received their DistinguishedRifleman badges from the best civilianrifleman of 2017, Justin Utley, a formerTSRA Junior. The NWTFS DOESNOT GIVE MEMORIES LIKE THISTO YOUNG PEOPLE. A Bexar County game warden wascalled by Alamo security about awoman walking a white-tailed fawn ona leash. L TO R: GRAHAM PHILLIPS, BLAKE PHILLIPS, ANDRYLEE PHILLIPS FROM WICHITA COUNTY AT THENATIONAL SHOOTING COMPLEX AT SAN ANTIONIO.

RANGE REMINDERS

As a reminder to ALL MEMBERS: Ourgun range is private property wheremembers are allowed to shoot on thevarious ranges. We do not allowmembers to bring guests that will beshooting. In order to bring a non-member to our range to shoot thatperson must buy a “permit” for $15 perday per person and accompany a currentmember who has a gate card. Thepermit must be obtained at our office onSouthwest Pkwy., Mon.-Fri. From 1:00to 5:30 pm. There are some exceptionsto that policy for certain events that areallowed by out Board of Directors suchas fundraiser's for Non-Profitorganizations, NRA and youthcompetitions, etc. It is important for ourmembers to wear their membershipbadge in a conspicuous manner on theirouter clothing while at the range. Inaddition, our Members are expected toknow and follow ALL of our rangerules! That highlights one of the mainreasons for this policy: holding peopleaccountable for their actions! It is one

of several policies designed to increasethe level of safety and security at ourrange. It is a severe violation of ourrules for a member, or any other person,to loan to another person their “gateaccess card”, or share one of our“special use” gate codes that they areprivileged to use.

ILLEGAL NETTING ISN’T EASY

While patrolling Willacy County, agame warden received an OperationGame Thief crime stopper call regardingthree individuals who were possiblyworking a gill net within a publicwaterway on the west side of the county. After arriving at the location, the wardenwitnessed two exhausted individualsputting the final touches on a freshly setgill net. After a few minutes, thefishermen finally noticed they werebeing watched by a game warden andone of the individuals immediately said,“Well sir, I’m not going to deny it, youcaught me.” The warden proceeded toinform the exhausted individuals that itwas time to remove the illegal net fromt

water and receive citations. Cases arepending.

A game warden was patrolling northToledo Bend Reservoir during the longFourth of July weekend when he noticedtwo individuals in a small boat with whatappeared to be a hoop net, which isillegal for use in Texas waters. Thewarden observed the subjects throughhis binoculars for a while as it appearedthey were trying to find a location toplace the net. The netters spotted thewarden and attempted to flee, but wereovertaken. Upon questioning, thesubjects admitted to having alreadyplaced a hoop net in Texas waters andwere cited for illegal means andmethods. The case is pending.
