The new Machinists work for defense contractor URS Federal Services Corp. Some 71.2 percent of them voted in favor of joining District 751 in an election held Dec. 8. It was the second time around for the URS workers, who had contacted Dis- trict 751 organizers before when they worked for defense contractor Lear Siegler at JBLM. That first effort in 2009 failed to gain enough support to justify taking it to a National Labor Relations Board vote. But this time around, the URS workers were more receptive to voting “Union Yes.” District 751’s success in negotiating labor agreements with defense contrac- tors made the difference, said Gary Allen, the General Vice President for the IAM&AW’s Western Territories. “The URS workers saw the District’s success in achieving quality first contracts for these units, and they wanted the same.” There wasn’t much debate on it among the new members, said John Davis, who is a backshop Lead for the group. “Everybody had their own opinions, kept them to themselves and took it in to vote,” he said. “Everybody had heard what they needed to hear.” For many workers, paid time off was a big issue, Davis said. “A bunch of people got fed up with having their vacation rearranged,” he said. “I’d like to have some sick time back. I hate to head out sick and have to burn up vacation days.” Pay and benefits were also an issue. sounds pretty good,” he said.“I’d like to see an area market pay

raise,” he added. “I’ve been there 13years and haven’t seen a pay raise or costof living increase in four years. That’dbe kind of nice.”

A year ago, more than 220 URS em-ployees working at Whidbey Island Na-val Air Station also voted to join District751. They ratified their first contract inJuly, and began seeing the first fruits oftheir new contract this fall, when theystarted collecting the increased wagesthat were negotiated. They also began toaccrue sick leave, which the URS work-ers at NAS Whidbey didn’t have before.

After seeing what the union could dofor their co-workers, the URS workers atJBLM were eager to listen, said District751 President Tom Wroblewski.

“We have a lot of highly skilled mem-bers who do work that’s essential forAmerica’s defense,” said Wroblewski.“They deserve to be paid fairly and treated

fairly, and a Machinists Union contractcan give them both.”

The new Machinists still have a lot ofhard work to do before they get their firstunion contract, said District 751 Organiz-ing Director Jesse Cote, who led the URScampaign.

“This doesn’t get done without plentyof involvement from the folks on the shopfloor; participation is the key to a success-ful deal,” Cote said. “The good news is that

we’ve got a strong core group who under-stand all the benefits a union contract canbring. Their solidarity gives us a strongplatform to work from as we go to workwith the company on a solid contract thatthe new members can vote on.”

GVP Allen personally thanked all thevolunteers who worked on the URS cam-paign. “It was your hard work and dedica-tion that made it possible to bring thisvictory home for this workforce,” he said.

This past year, 2011,will loom large in avia-tion history. It’s the yearthe first 787 was deliv-ered, as well as the first ofthe new 747-8s. It’s theyear the U.S. Air Forcefinally settled the long-running disputeover who would build its next-genera-tion aerial refueling tanker: the BoeingCo., which is poised to begin buildingthem in Everett over the next couple ofyears. And it’s the year Boeing decidedto extend the life of the most-successfulairliner in history, by deciding to buildthe 737 MAX in Renton.

But when historians years in the futurewrite this chapter on the major events of2011, I believe they’ll focus on somethingelse that happened this year that got over-shadowed by the headlines and ignored bythe TV talking heads: Boeing and theMachinists Union have agreed to a com-mon set of goals and a new framework forachieving them, and we’ve committed toworking toward the mutual success of bothlabor and management.

All this was part of the four-yearcontract extension that you voted to ratifyearlier this month. Boeing’s commit-ment to building the 737 MAX here inPuget Sound grabbed all the headlines,but it was the pledge to work togetherthat I feel will bring the longest-lastingbenefits.

We all know the story of how we gothere, of how relations between Boeingand this union have deteriorated over thepast decade or more. We’ve gotten good– very good – at fighting each other.

But even as we engaged in very publicarguments, Boeing and District 751 con-tinued to find ways to work together –

quietly but effectively – to win newbusiness and to improve on old pro-cesses. There is no better example ofthis than the fact that for nearly adecade, Boeing and the Machinistsfought side-by-side to ensure thatAmerica’s military would get anAmerican-made refueling tanker.

Working together, Machinists,engineers and managers, we were

able to find ways to reduce costs andimprove productivity, and that’s whatallowed Boeing to submit the winningbid for the Air Force’s KC-46 tanker,which means we’ll be building 767s herein Everett for years to come.

Think of what that meant: Instead offighting our union in hopes of squeezing1 or 2 percent cost savings through dras-tic wage and benefit cuts, Boeing man-agement worked with us to improve pro-cesses and efficiencies, and together wewere able to slice more than 20 percentoff the asking price. And because of that,Boeing won a huge order.

This will be the example for how Boeingand the Machinists will work together inthe future, for the benefit of everyone.

I say “everyone” because the contractextension is good news for Washingtonstate.

The agreement secures the jobs of thou-sands of men and women across the regionby ensuring that they’ll get to continuedoing the work they do on current-model737s on the next version. This includes allthe people working on 737 parts in theEverett Wire and Interiors shops, as well asFabrication Division workers in Auburn,Fredrickson and Portland.

The significance of this agreement towork toward the mutual success of bothlabor and management goes beyondBoeing and Puget Sound, however.

For the past generation, the thinkingin American business has been domi-

nated by the notion that success is a zero-sum game. By that, I mean that WallStreet and its political allies decided thatthere was only so much money to goaround, and the only way that they couldincrease their share was to take it awayfrom workers by crushing the unionshere at home and outsourcing as muchwork as possible to overseas nationsdesperate for jobs and business invest-ment. Labor has responded with a des-perate fight to hold on to what is left ofAmerica’s shrinking middle class.

After 30 years of this fighting, wenow see the result: this month, the Cen-sus Bureau reported that nearly half ofall Americans are living in poverty, orare just one missed paycheck or emer-gency room visit away from it. In themeantime, U.S. corporations are sittingon record piles of cash that they’re afraidto invest in America, because with pov-erty at an all-time high, no one here canafford to buy their products.

With this contract extension, Boeingis choosing another path. It is commit-ting to the Machinists Union that one ofits top goals is to sustain and grow good-paying jobs with benefits: health carethat means a sudden illness won’t bank-rupt a family, pensions that will allowour seniors to contribute to our commu-nities in their retirement.

And it has been rewarded for it. Sincewe announced our tentative deal withBoeing, shares of the company’s stock hasjumped up by as much as $3 a share, whichmeans the company’s valuation jumpedby more than $2 billion. Boeing customershave responded to the news by orderingmore than 250 planes with a list price ofclose to $30 billion. And these amazingfinancial gains have come even though thecompany has committed to keeping workin the United States, has given its workerspay raises and agreed to keep providing

pensions – which is the opposite of whatthe Wall Street types have been urgingcompanies to do.

At the same time, our union has agreedto a new roadmap, using our skills, experi-ence and knowledge to help Boeing lowercosts and raise productivity so that to-gether we can better fight our competitorsin Europe, Asia and South America. We’llbe meeting every month to look for newopportunities and to resolve issues beforethey become problems.

We also have been rewarded for ouractions, with stronger written commit-ments than we’ve ever had to ensure anew generation of workers will find jobsat Boeing.

I know not all of you agreed with theproposal, and it’s not going to be easy –after all these years of conflict – for any

will be done by Machinists Union work-ers in Puget Sound or Wichita.

The new contract also creates a new,top-level joint council of union and com-pany leaders that will meet monthly topursue opportunities and work togetherto solve problems.

“This committee has agreed to fourmutual objectives, and first among themis this: creating and sustaining good-paying jobs with benefits,” Wroblewskisaid. “Thanks to your vote on this con-tract extension, that now is one of theBoeing Co.’s stated goals – that’s an-other thing we got in writing.”

Once the joint council starts meeting,Wroblewski said one of his goals will beto explore “how to help the Boeing Co.stop wasting money by outsourcing workthat our union members can do better,quicker and cheaper.”

Under the terms of the extended con-tract, Machinists will receive:

• 2-percent wage increases in eachyear of the contract, plus additional cost-

of-living adjustments cal-culated under the currentformula;

• A new incentive planthat has the potential topay out up to 4 percenteach year – a similar planfor St. Louis Machinistshas paid an average of$1,447 a year over thepast decade;

• Increases to theformula for calculat-ing pensions, toppingout at $91 a monthper year of service in 2016, plus acontinuation of the current 401(k)savings plan with a company match,plus a commitment to preserving pen-sions for new hires;

• Improved vision and dental in-surance benefits; and

• A $5,000 ratification bonus,which was paid on Dec. 15 – pump-ing close to $145 million into thePuget Sound economy, just beforeChristmas.

In exchange, unionmembers agreed to payhigher medical premi-ums starting in 2013.

Boeing and the Ma-chinists Union haveclashed in the past,Wroblewski acknowl-edged. But with theratification of the con-tract extension, the twosides are now commit-ted to working to-gether.

“ I t ’ l lbe a big shift that we bothneed to embrace. But wemust do this,” he said. “Be-cause it’s obvious that we,as union members, cannotprosper if the Boeing Co.isn’t successful, and we’veseen quite clearly thatBoeing’s success is tied di-rectly to the skills and expe-rience of our MachinistsUnion members.”

still amazed and relieved to have the jobssecured for our state’s economy.

Everyone was also celebrating theSouthwest Airlines announcement of therecord sale of 208 737s. Earlier in theday Southwest had ordered 150 737 MAXaircraft and 58 Next Gen 737s. South-west was the launch customer on threeearlier versions: the 737-300, 737-500and the Next-Generation 737-700.

In President Wroblewski’s remarkshe said, “At an earlier and more skepticaltime, we might have assumed that Boeingheld off on the Southwest Airlines an-nouncement until after negotiations.Now I believe the fact we have this newfour-year contract extension, is the rea-son Boeing was able to make the an-nouncement.”

Boeing Vice President Julie Acostaexplained that these negotiations and theagreement to build the 737 MAX inWashington were the result of honestdiscussions and willingness by both thecompany and the union to understand

the fundamental needs of each other andcommit to a future shared destiny.

Governor Gregoire was ecstatic toreceive the 737 MAX and recognized thecommitment of both the MachinistsUnion and the Boeing Company to thefuture of aerospace manufacturing inWashington. She told the gathered leg-islators, “The company and the uniondid their job. Now it is time for us to doour job here in state government.”

She urged the legislators to quicklypass her legislation calling for additionalinvestment in aerospace workforce edu-cation.

The legislative reception includedDemocrats and Republicans, members ofthe Senate and House. All were brimmingwith happiness at the historic labor agree-ment and the solid commitment of jobs forour state. Now we have to ensure theyreciprocate that commitment by investingin the K-12 and the higher education sys-tems to ensure we have enough trainedaerospace workers to take us to the future.

The National Labor RelationsBoard dropped its complaint againstBoeing on Dec. 9, after the MachinistsUnion notified a federal administra-tive law judge that the newly ratifiedcontract extension had resolved itsdispute with the company.

Lafe Solomon, the Labor Board’slead attorney, said he was “happy toannounce” that the complaint had beenresolved by collective bargaining be-tween the union and Boeing.

“This is the outcome we have al-ways preferred, and one that is typicalfor our agency,” Solomon said. “About90 percent of meritorious NLRB casesare resolved as a result of agreementsbetween the parties or settlements withthe agency.”

From District 751’s perspective,resolving the NLRB complaint thisway made far more sense than con-tinuing to fight it out in the courts, saidDistrict President Tom Wroblewski.

“We were confident our attorneyscould prove in court that Boeing hadbroken the law and violated our mem-bers’ rights,” he said. “We had theevidence right there on video. But wealso knew that it was going to be along, hard fight.“

Wroblewski said the legal battlewas likely to take six to eight years, asBoeing, the union and the NLRBfought their way through the federalcourt system –�potentially all the wayto the U.S. Supreme Court.

In the meantime, District 751 wouldhave to negotiate at least one, andperhaps two, new contracts sitting

across the table from the same Boeingexecutives who would have had totestify in court. It would be hard,Wroblewski noted, to get a fair con-tract for workers under those circum-stances.

And in the end, the best the IAMcould get was an order forcing Boeingto bring back the work it had takenaway from its union workers.

“So we did the math,” Wroblewskisaid. “We could continue the fight forthe next eight years in the hopes thatthe Supreme Court would do the rightthing and give us our three 787s amonth back – or take the contractextension Boeing was offering, whichgives us more jobs at a much higherproduction rate.”

Machinists build more componentsfor the 737 than any other airplane, henoted, while the only completed pieceof the 787 union members build is thevertical stabilizer.

“Taking the contract extension andsettling the case gives us more jobs inthe near term, and our new relation-ship with Boeing gives us a betterchance of negotiating good contractswith the company and securing newwork in the long run,” he said.

“This union is about jobs,” he con-cluded, “and while it may have beensatisfying to hear a judge tell Boeingthat it was guilty of breaking the law,which we already knew, to me it’smore important to know that anothergeneration of Machinists Union mem-bers will get to build Boeing airplanesin Puget Sound.”

District 751 members working atHytek Finishes have overwhelminglyapproved a strike sanction vote, givingthe union’s negotiating team more le-verage at the bargaining table.

The strike sanction measure was ap-proved with a 99-percent “yes” vote onDec. 13, the union said. The vote doesnot mean a strike is imminent. However,it does signal to Hytek executives thattheir union workforce is willing to sup-port a labor action, should talks withmanagement fail to result in an accept-able contract.

Negotiations are set to resume in earlyJanuary.

The workers at Hytek specialize in do-ing various types of metal finishing andcoating for aerospace manufacturers, in-cluding Boeing, Lockheed and Bell Heli-copters.

High-cost health care, below-marketpay and dissatisfaction with thecompany’s process for promotions andpay upgrades were the biggest issuesunion members had going into the talks,and so far “negotiations with Hytek havenot produced adequate attention to their

concerns” saidIAM&AW Grand LodgeRep Kevin Cummings.

“These workers per-form a highly skilled andcritical function in a toxicand carcinogenic atmo-sphere, and deserve bet-ter respect and compen-sation than they are get-ting,” he said.

Hytek is a subsidiary ofBellevue-based EsterlineCorp., which released itsfourth quarter and year-end

District 751 continued its success inrepresenting members covered by the Ser-vice Contract Act with four new contractsrecently ratified at Joint Base LewisMcChord.

Building on the ex-perience and expertise,Machinists Union nego-tiators delivered the newagreements, which wereoverwhelmingly ratifiedover a two-week periodfrom November 30 toDecember 15.

As November andDecember came to aclose, District 751wrapped up the nego-tiations with the fourcontractors at JointBase Lewis McChord. In a four-wayparlay, members at L-3 Communica-tions, Delaware Resource Group (DRG),AAI and Eagle Systems overwhelminglyratified three-year agreements.

L-3 is the prime contractor with mem-bers there serving as pilot and loadmasterinstructors. AAI employs the tech simula-tors II and III, members at DRG are classi-fied as simulator maintenance technicianswhile Eagle Systems has the schedulers.The Agreement for DRG also covers work-ers in Charleston, South Carolina.

“This was the first time that I’ve par-ticipated in a negotiation. It was truly excit-ing and empowering to be a part of theprocess. I’m very happy with the results

and I feel that our entireunit agrees,” said JameyShewman, who sat onthe union side of the tablein the DRG negotiations.“ I actually look forwardto being at the tableagain, in three years!”

Ruben Ontiveros,Union Steward and ne-gotiator for AAI, wasalso pleased with the re-sults and said, “With thebacking of all the IAMmembers at our site, wecame back from the ne-

gotiation table with a contract that we canbe happy with.”

“Our membership voted unanimouslyto accept the negotiated agreement,” saidJim Schneller from L-3. “We are pleasedwith improved pay and benefits and be-lieve we set a solid baseline for futureCBA’s with L-3. Our IAM negotiatorsfought hard for this agreement and guidedus to a successful conclusion.”

The four contracts are just anotherdemonstration of the experience 751brings in representing members under

the Service Contract Act.The new collective bargaining agree-

ments delivered similar economics andeach delivered general wage increaseseach year of the contract with a substan-tial market wage adjustment in the firstyear followed by 3 percent raises in boththe second and third years.

Other economic improvements in-cluded shift differential, report time andcall back pay pro-visions, pay ad-ditives for leadand other certifi-cations, as well aslump sum pay-ments that rangedfrom $500 to$7,500 depend-ing on the agree-ment and job clas-sification.

Each of thenew collectivebargaining agree-ments also increased the opt-out wageoption for benefits to $6 per hour in2012, $7 an hour in 2013 and $8 an hourin 2014. Since many of the members areretired military and have other benefits,the opt-out benefit pay is always impor-tant under the Service Contract Act. Eachcontract also delivered the 401(K) sav-ings plan with employer match whilethose working at DRG also receive anadditional 3 percent profit sharing con-tribution into the savings plan.

Paid time off, which was an importantissue, was also addressed with personaltime off (PTO), vacation and bereave-ment spelled out in writing.

“The overwhelming votes for eachagreement show these members under-stand the benefits of Union representationand appreciate having the Machinists Unionnegotiate their wages, hours and workingconditions,” stated IAM District 751 Presi-

dent TomW r o b l e w s k i .“Jesse Cote dem-onstrated his exper-tise not only as anorganizer, but at thebargaining table aswell – playing a keyrole in all fouragreements.”

“Despite thesehard economictimes, these agree-ments show theIAM can still bring

improvements to wages, benefits and work-ing conditions to Service Contract employ-ees,” said District 751’s Organizing Direc-tor, Jesse Cote II. “It also brings a measureof job security and levels the playing fieldbetween the current employer and othercompanies that might compete for the con-tract in the future, because there will be acollective bargaining agreement in placethat sets the standard.”

All four agreements will expire Octo-ber 1, 2014.

financial results on Dec. 8. At the time,Chief Executive Brad Lawrence said that“fiscal 2011 was one of the strongest yearsin our history” and he added that “we expectto grow about 20 percent in fiscal 2012,” inlarge part because of Boeing’s plans toincrease production rates for its 737 models.

“We aren’t asking for the moon,” saidCummings, “just a fair contract that rec-ognizes the sacrifices of their workers.Let’s hope Hytek managers come to theirsenses and quit talking about how muchthey care, and start acting like they care.”

Former District 751 President MarkBlondin has been named as a GeneralVice President of theInternational Associa-tion of Machinists &Aerospace Workers.Blondin is now theleader of the union’snewly created Aero-space Territory.

“Aerospace indus-try workers make up almost 25 percentof our union’s membership,” saidIAM&AW International President TomBuffenbarger, who announced the cre-ation of the new Territory on Dec. 16.“Mark Blondin’s years of experience inthe aerospace industry make him theideal person to lead this new Territory.”

Blondin was previously assigned asAerospace Coordinator in 2007 with theprimary responsibility of negotiating agree-ments between the IAM and Boeingthroughout the United States and Canada.

Before that, he’d served as District 751’sPresident and Directing Business Repre-sentative for more than six years. He was aBusiness Rep for five years.

“It is an honor to lead this new Aero-space Territory,” said Blondin. “Organiz-ing our aerospace members under one ban-ner will help keep North America the leaderin high-tech manufacturing, the world’sbest producer of aerospace products andthe creator of solid, middle-class jobs.”

Under the formula approved by members in 2010,the 2012 dues were calculated at 2.25 times the weightedaverage hourly earnings for bargaining unit members asof Aug. 31 – excluding bonus pay – plus any IAM GrandLodge per capita assessment increases.

Machinists’ helping hands reached out acrossPuget Sound to make the holidays special for count-less individuals. Throughout November and De-cember, members volunteered for dozens of activi-ties. Hungry families in Western Washington will find iteasier to put food on their tables this winter, thanks to theefforts of the Machinists Union and its members.

More than 125 members of District 751 gave up aSaturday to help out during KING-TV’s recent Home

When the Snohomish County Red Crosshonored real heroes at a breakfast on Decem-ber 8th, David Robinson, a 32-year District751 member who works at Boeing in func-tional test, was one of the shining stars. Itwasn’t a case of an angel looking out for agrandfather. Rather, it was a grandfather look-ing out for his Angel.

His story shows how an instant can changeeverything. He became a lifesaver doing thesimplest of tasks – crossing a street.

His selfless moment came on April 26 aftertaking his granddaughter Angel to her swim-ming lessons and then out to dinner at a localcafe – something they did on a regular basis.

As David carried his three year old grand-daughter across an intersection, he was struckby an SUV making a right-hand turn onto U.S.Highway 2. With only a split second to think,David’s instinct was to protect Angel. Helifted her high over his head to protect herfrom being hit. When both crashed to the street, she landedon top of him. His body broke her fall, and Angel onlysuffered a small bruise on her bottom.

David was not so lucky.In protecting his granddaughter, he took the full blow of

the vehicle and suffered serious injuries including a frac-

tured skull, two broken legs, internal damage and a brokenbone around his right eye socket.

“I just remember pushing her up and out of the way,” hesaid. “I knew there was no stopping that vehicle fromhitting me. I think she went up on the hood and fell on mewhen she came down. I had a compound fracture in my leftleg — both lower bones were broken — and a fracturedright knee.”

He spent six days at Providence Regional MedicalCenter Everett, two of them in an intensive care unit. Heused a wheelchair for more than a month, then crutches anda cane. He still walks with a limp. He was off work for fourand a half months recovering.

Angel was taken to a hospital for observation and otherthan the little bruise on her bottom was unhurt.

David and his granddaughter always had a special bond.His lifesaving impulse only made it stronger.

“Angel is a pretty special little girl,” Robinson said.While the Red Cross breakfast honored many trained to

handle emergencies like police officers and security guards,individuals like David who in a split second made adecision to save someone while putting themselves indanger are what the Real Heroes Breakfast is all about.

Homeless people in Tacoma enjoyed hot and heartyThanksgiving dinners thanks to the efforts of District751 volunteers.

In November, members of the Machinists VolunteerProgram delivered 58 turkeys and seven hams to themission, plus checks and cash totaling $1,458.

That was enough to meet the need for Thanksgivingturkeys, with some left over for Christmas, the volun-teers said.

“Our members volunteer in the mission’s kitchenseveral times a month, and they see the need there,” saidRobley Evans, the president of the MVP Committee.

According to those volunteers, the number of peoplewho come to the mission seeking meals has more thandoubled this fall, to the point that they’re regularlyfeeding 350 people. Yet while demand for meals andother services increases, the volume of donations to themissions has fallen off this fall, as work on Tacoma’snew light rail link has made it harder for people to reachthe mission to drop off food or other donations.

“Our members saw a need and acted,” said District751 President Tom Wroblewski. “They didn’t wait to beasked. That kind of community service really is some-thing to admire.”

Union volunteers were back at the mission to servebreakfast at the Tacoma mission on Christmas Eve andChristmas Day, as well as many weekends in between.

Turkeys for the Mission

Team Harvest food drive to benefit Northwest Harvest.They helped collect cash and load donated food into semitrailers at sites from Tacoma to Everett.

District 751’s local lodges and individual membersalso came together to donate $3,563 in cash, plus more

than 500 pounds of food that was collected atunion halls across Puget Sound.

And the food drive got further support fromthe Washington Machinists Council – the um-brella group for all Machinists Union districtsand locals statewide – which contributed an-other $1,500 to the food drive.

“Our MVPs volunteer nearly every week-end, feeding the homeless at missions in Tacomaand Everett,” said Robley Evans, the chairmanof the union’s Machinists Volunteer Program.“We’re seeing more and more people coming in– homeless families and veterans. Given thatthe need is so great, it’s more important thanever for groups like ours to get involved.”

This is the 10th year in a row that District 751volunteers have taken part in KING-TV’s HomeTeam Harvest event.

When labor communicators from across North America gathered inSeattle this fall, the District 751 Communication Department tookhome some of the top awards. Throughout the year, District 751 members continually raise money to benefitGuide Dogs of America, a charity that provides service dogs to visually impairedindividuals free of charge. 751 was again the top contributor - donating $263,078for fundraising activities in 2011. District and Local Lodge fundraisers for GuideDogs of America have proven very successful and demonstrate the variety ofevents that can bring in additional donations. Horseshoe tournaments, raffles, carshows and golf tournaments are just a few of the ways 751 raises money for thisvery worthwhile charity. Below are just a few of the events that helped raise themoney.

Asian and Pacific Americans face aunique set of problems in the workplace,said Duy Tran, a 751 UnionSteward at Boeing who is animmigrant from Vietnam.

Tran was one of thespeakers at the Asian Pa-cific American LaborAlliance’s workers hearingin Seattle on Nov. 19.APALA is a constituencygroup within the AFL-CIOthat serves as a bridge toconnect Asian PacificAmericans with the broaderlabor movement.

Tran spoke on the issues he’s encoun-tered in eight years serving as a unionsteward at Boeing.

“For many Asians, our greatest down-fall is that English is our second-lan-guage,” he said. “Our accents often make

people treat us as a kid.”And in the workplace, younger super-

visors often don’t treat theirolder employees with re-spect. This goes against tra-ditional Asian thinking thatelders should be honored.

Language and culturaldifficulties often preventAsian workers fromspeaking up for them-selves, Tran said.

Managers say theywant to hear employees’ideas but “they don’t makethe effort to understand us

when we talk,” Tran said. “They blameus when things go wrong, because theyknow we won’t talk back.”

Without unions at work, “Asians havefull experience and wisdom, but theyhave no voice,” Tran concluded.

Italso helps disabled children and provides survivor ben-efits for children who have lost a parent. We want to getacross the concept of paying in to the program whileworking and then receiving money when retired.

Carl then read a letter signed by the Retired Club officersthat will be sent to Senator Cantwell. The letter asks thesenator to request a senate committee investigation of drugcompanies that hold back drugs for financial gain.

to help decorate the room. Anyone whocan come one or two hours early to helpwould be appreciated. Betty Ness and RuthRender have made arrangements for thefood and Helen Lowe will be in charge ofselling tickets. Invitations will be mailedout by the District.

Jim Hutchins applauded about what agreat job Helen Pompeo does to plan thecasino trips. He presented her with abouquet of flowers to acknowledge allher hard work and President Seibertthanked Helen and expressed how mucheveryone appreciated all that she did.

Awards to members are$2,000 per academic year.They are granted for a spe-cific period from one to fouryears leading to a bachelor’sdegree or a two-year vocationa/technical certification.

Awards to Children of Members are:College: $1,000 per academic year. All

District 751 members who operateWashington’s largest regional landfillhave overwhelmingly ratified a new four-year contract.

Some 82 percent of Local 1951 mem-bers voted in favor of ratifying the dealwith Allied Waste, which owns the re-gional landfill at Roosevelt in south-central Washington. The contract wasapproved on Nov. 16, and took effect onNov. 22.

Under the terms of the contract, unionmembers will receive:

• A lump sum bonus of $1,250 thatwas paid on Dec. 9, plus raises of 35cents an hour in the second year, 45 centsan hour in the third year and 40 cents anhour in the fourth year;

• $350 reimbursement for buying win-ter work clothes and boots in 2012, go-ing up to $375 in 2013 and 2014;

• Increased company contributions toa pension fund and the addition of a

401(k) plan managed by the WesternEmployees Benefits Trust;

• Improved language on seniority;and

• A new job category for “utility per-sonnel” that added three more employ-ees – who had been doing some unionwork – to the bargaining unit.

The contract covers more than 150employees of Allied Waste’s Rabancosubsidiary. In the last year of the con-tract, pay at the site will range from$16.99 to $27.43, depending on job clas-sification.

The union’s negotiating committeehad recommended its members acceptthe contract offer.

This was the third contract that unionSteward Rick Porter helped negotiatewith the company, and of the three, itwas the most difficult, he said, with littlemovement from the company’s negoti-ating team until the final day.

“It was fairly tough,” he said. “Theway things are, we did alright.”

Porter said the seniority language –which clarifies procedures for work as-signments andstart times —was a signifi-cant improve-ment.

Overwhelming Contract Approval at Allied Waste

Machinists Union members’ willing-ness to help out others was evident acrossEastern Washington.

In Goldendale, after voting to ratify anew four-year agreement, members theretook time to help out another – MichelleStanley, the widow of long-time mem-ber Guy Stanley, who passed away ear-lier this year after working for years atthe landfill.

“Guy was a strong Union brother whoserved as a Steward for many years. Weheld a fundraiser at one of the Unionmeetings with hamburgers and hot dogsand asked for donations,” said StewardJerry Mickelson. “We got the companyto match the amount. It was a good thingto do because he was such a loyal brother,and it showed he wasn’t forgotten.”

In the Tri-Cities, many understandthat Machinists are known for their help-ing hand. When Local 1951 PresidentCraig Smoot was asked if he would help

a family in need, he readily agreed.The family’s father was diagnosed

with a fast-spreading cancer last monthand was not expected to see Christmas.They were in need of a mechanic to help

get their vehicle safe to drive.His wife needed the van to takethe kids to school and to get himto medical and chemotherapy ap-pointments. Without hesitationCraig volunteered his services,replaced the front brake rotorsand pads, as well as fixing thedash lights.

Machinists Union membersworking at Triumph CompositeSystems in Spokane did their partto make the holidays brighter forothers in their community. Mem-bers took part in a number ofdifferent fundraisers and events.

• Toys for Tots - Collected$3,880 in cash and collected 128toys. This effort was done in con-junction with the U.S. Marines.

Members in Goldendale held fundraisers to help the family of a long-time member who passed away earlier this yearand convinced Allied Waste to match the contribution.

• Meals on Wheels - Helped providefood for the needy; members sold gour-met lunches and cinnagrams on a varietyof occasions.

• Catholic Charities – Membershelped this charity by cleaning aroundbuildings, cutting shrubbery, powerwashing buildings and laying bark.

United Way-The employees atTriumph alsoshowed their gener-osity and concern forothers by increasingUnited Way contri-butions by 17 per-cent. With needs in-creasing during thecurrent recession,the timing for the in-creased contribu-tions couldn’t be bet-ter.

Triumph employ-ees also held the

Annual Children’s Christmas Party,which is funded through silent auctions,crafts, holiday gift baskets, etc. Triumphalso kicked in funds and the membershipbrought in treats. More than 1,000 peopleattended with 900 of those being kids.The remaining toys were donated toWishing Star Foundation.
