Please allow me to wish you all a Happy Easter season. I’m aware that many of you are in the midst of last minute preparations, for this great Celebration. Please allow yourself enough rest and relaxation.

It is with a great deal of sadness that I have accepted the resignation of our Secretary, Caryn Lawler. She and her husband, Jack, will be leaving Western New York this summer. I am most grateful to Caryn for her devotion and dedication during her tenure as secretary. Priscilla Wiedl has agreed to take the position of Secretary.

In addition to his organ performances, Robert has conducted the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Los Angeles Opera and other opera companies in Germany, Norway, Switzerland, and Venezuela. He has also conducted the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, the Greater Buffalo Opera, and the Chautauqua Symphony. Robert is also a theology graduate from Ridley Hall, Cambridge University and an ordained priest in the Church of England. He presently serves at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Niagara Falls.

STUDENT COMPETITION UP-DATE

On Saturday, February 18, two talented young artists competed at St. Joseph Cathedral, Buffalo for a chance to advance to the regional level in the AGO Quimby/Young Organists’ Competition. Our Buffalo site was one of four in the northeast region to host this competition. One player from each site will advance to the regional competition this summer in Montreal. Jiaqi Shao was awarded first prize of $1,500, including travel expenses to Montreal. Jiaqi Shao is 19 years old. She hails from Shanghai, China and is a sophomore at Eastman School of Music where she is pursuing her Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance as a student of David Higgs. She began studying piano at the age of 4 and studied for several years at the Music Middle School (affiliated with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music). She enjoys improvising, composing and studying pedagogy. She is also a VanDelinder Fellow at Christ Church Episcopal in Rochester, NY.

She played: J.S. Bach, Prelude and Fugue in A minor BWV 543 Frank Ferko, Mass for Dedication, Mvts. 1,2,3,5 (the required piece) Mit Freuden Zart (from choice of 3 hymns) Charles Marie Widor, Organ Symphony No. 6 (Op. 42 No. 2), Mvt. 1

Jonathan Denham was awarded a second place prize of $500. Jonathan Denham is 18 years old. Originally from Schenectady, NY his home address is now Glenville, NY. He is a sophomore at Houghton College where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance, with elective work in Intercultural Studies. Jonathan studies under Dr. Judy Congdon. Prior teachers have included Mrs. Elenore Farnum and Mr. Scott Trexler. At Houghton, Jonathan regularly performs in chapel services and for choral and instrumental concerts. Additionally, he serves as Organist at Cuba United Methodist Church. He began piano lessons at age 6 and started organ lessons at 13.

In addition to serving on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music as Assistant Professor of Organ, Nathan Laube’s extensive recital career includes major venues spanning four continents. These include the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Berlin Philharmonie, Berlin Cathedral, the Dortmund Konzerthaus, St. Bavo Church, Haarlem, the Cankarjev Dom, Ljubljana, and the Sejong Center, Seoul. In the USA he has appeared at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles; Verizon Hall, Philadelphia; Overture Hall, Madison, WI; The Schermerhorn Symphony Center, Nashville, TN; Washington National Cathedral; The Kauffman Center’s Helzberg Hall in Kansas City, MO; and Spivey Hall in Morrow, GA. Nathan also frequently presents concert tours in the United Kingdom where highlight venues have included York Minster, Canterbury Cathedral, Exeter Cathedral, Ely Cathedral, Hereford Cathedral, and Truro Cathedral. In October 2016, he played the first inaugural recital of the restored Harrison & Harrison organ of King’s College Chapel, Cambridge. His concert schedule for 2017 will include performances at the Meyerson Concert Hall in Dallas, TX, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Highlights of Mr. Laube’s recent and upcoming festival appearances around the world include the Berlin Orgelsommer (DE), the Stuttgart Internationaler Orgelsommer (DE), the Naumburg Orgelsommer (DE), the 300th Anniversary festival of the 1714 Silbermann organ in the Freiberg Cathedral (DE), the Dresden Music Festival (DE), the Orléans Organ Festival (FR), Bordeaux Festival d’Été (FR), the Lapua Festival (FI), the Lahti Organ Festival (FI), the 2015 and 2016 Smarano Organ Academy (IT), the Göteborg Festival (SE), the Max Reger Foundation of America’s 2015 Max Reger Festival (USA), the WFMT Bach Project for which he performed the complete Clavierübung III in Chicago (USA), and several EROI Festivals at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester (USA).

Performances for conventions and conferences are frequent, and this coming year Mr. Laube will be a featured performer at the 2016 National Convention of the Organ Historical Society in Philadelphia where he will perform a solo recital at Girard College. He was previously featured at the Society’s conventions in 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2015. For the American Guild of Organists, Nathan was featured at their national conventions in 2010 Washington, DC, and in 2012 Nashville, TN. He will perform for three regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists in 2017; Dallas TX, Montreal, PQ, and Youngstown OH.

Mr. Laube has two CD recordings available: the Stephen Paulus Grand Concerto on the Naxos label (NAXOS 8.559740) recorded with the Nashville Symphony, Giancarlo Guerrero, conducting, which received a GRAMMY Award for Best Classical Compendium; and a new solo recital recording on the Ambiente label (AMBIENTE ACD-1062), recorded at the Stadtkirche in Nagold, Germany. In addition, many of Mr. Laube’s live performances have been featured on American Public Media’s “Pipedreams.”

Nathan is frequently asked to teach master classes and workshops in connection with his concerts, and often serves on the faculty for Pipe Organ Encounters in the USA – clinics presented by The American Guild of Organists designed to introduce young keyboardists to the pipe organ and its vastrepertoire. He has also taught at the Oberlin Summer Organ Academy in Ohio and at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts Summer Organ Academy in Philadelphia, and regularly presents masterclasses in the United States and in Europe.
