What people may not noticeabout Bryan Adams is that there’s a lotof hidden talent screaming to get out.We could be as great as Booker T.Washington, perhaps not academically, but artistically compatible.

Getting up early on a gloomySaturday morning is not the ideal wayto start a holiday break. That Saturdaymorning Bryan Adams senior JesusPrado, Leslie Chau, Tiffany Do, andmyself, had the pleasure in joining Mr.Derdeyn and Mr. Nayfa in a miniaturefieldtrip that exposed us to differenttypes of artists and different styles ofart.

At first we met up atMockingbird station, we impatientlywaited for another train that would leadus in to the heart of the Dallas ArtDistrict. Mr. Derdeyn, handed uscameras with black and white film, andtaught us how to replace our film, howto focus our lenses, and what to do andwhat not to do with the camera. As soonas he handed me the colorless camera,I felt like a child at Toys R’ Us, amazedby the beauty of its many numbers andbuttons. By the little shine in the otherkids’ eyes, I knew they felt the sameway.

After we got out of the trainwith the cameras in our hands ,we went on an insanepicture frenzy andphotographed almostevery corner andevery inanimate andanimate thing. It was abit nerve wracking tothink that we had towait a whole week todevelop and see ourpictures.

On December 17th and 18th, allof Ms. Rogers’ six cooking classesparticipated in a pie contest held here atBryan Adams during their class periods.Ms. Rogers decided to organize thiscontest in order to make her classes moreinteresting for her students; however thistask was not easy to carry out.

In order to make this pie contestwork there had to be pies, to make thepies the classes needed their individualingredients, which ended up costing Ms.Rogers a total of $554.00. The next taskwas to round up as many teachers to tasteand judge the pies, luckily Ms. Rogersreceived immediate email responses frominterested teachers, who were more thaneager to taste the pies. CoachCheesebrough, Mrs. Aufill, CoachDauber, Mrs. Powers, and Mrs. Fortnerwere among the twenty two teachers whotasted the pies during their planningperiods.

The students were verycompetitive and creative when decidingwhich recipe to use and how to presenttheir pies. Each pie was made fromscratch, starting from the crust to the filling. In the end, there were 56 pies in thecooking room. All of the students were extremelyconfident that their pie was the bestespecially Destiny Wallace who said thather pie was made using a “unique pecanpeach pie recipe.” However she wasn’tthe only student with that mindset, RenataJackson and her group members agreedthat “Equasia is the best cook” and that iswhy their pie would win.

In the end the pie contest turnedout to be a total success with all theteachers and students enjoying the pies.Although there was no prize or rewardfor the winners in each class, the studentsall agreed that making their pies was agreat experience!

Piece of pie, any one?

We walked for hours, before meetingup with Mr. Nayfa, and after we did,the lovely Laura Sohm greeted us,and attacked our barely awakenminds with helpful artistic tips. Thanksto her we got free admission into TheNasher Sculpture Center. Where wesaw the unbelievable, the bizarre, andthe interesting art work of ancient andmodern artists.

She later informed us thatvarious artists were in the museum, meeting and signing stuff for people.Unfortunately, she forced us to comeup with random questions to askthem, but good questions come fromcrazy and creative minds. It was apleasure to have met artists thatstarted from scratch, like us. By theend of the day, the starving BryanAdams group got rid of the infamousLaura Sohm and satisfied their bellieswith incredible Italian food. Whilewe were eating, Mr. Nayfa pointedout that we were a few blocks awayfrom Booker T. Washington, the highschool both Mr.Derdeyn and Mr.Nayfa graduated from a long timeago. After the Italian food, wewalked around down town to studythe beautiful architectures that wassurrounding us. We kept takingpictures until we all ran out of film.

We all had fun, learned somethingnew, and had a taste of the artisticlife we can have if we push ourselvestowards the paths we believe will bethe best for ourselves.

Bryan Adams’ art students LeslieChau, Tiffany Do, Jesus Prado, and Edna Vargas meet the artists.

Cougars Success StoryBryan Adams Alumni

John Anders attended BryanAdams HS in the sixties and was hissenior class president. He worked forthe BA newspaper, which at that timewas called Cougar Chronicle. He wassports editor and writer. Some of hismemories of his time at Bryan Adamswere when there might be a snow day,and like we all do today, he couldn’twait to hear that school was closed.Anders has many pleasant memories, but also a very tragic and life changingone as well. In 1963, John Anders andsome of his classmates saw John F.Kennedy drive by on Lemmon Avenueten minutes before he was assassinatedin downtown Dallas.

“I was in shock, I couldn’tbelieve the president had been killedand broke into tears”, he said. JFK’sassassination made him grow up moreand see life in a different way, whichhelped him be a more efficient writer.

Anders loved to write for thenewspaper at BA. He continued writingand was later hired as the sports editorand writer for the Dallas MorningNews.

He worked there for twenty-five years. As a newspaper writer hehad to write a column and was under ahuge amount of pressure to meet hisdeadlines. He said he liked writingbecause he loved amusing people andmaking everything interesting and fun.He knew from the very beginning thathe wanted to be a writer, becausewriting for him was easy and it camenaturally.

John Anders never wanted towrite more then just the newspaper. Hewas satisfied with writing for a massaudience, which to him was a “greatglorious profession”.

He has recently retired and istraveling to Paris, Amsterdam,California, San Francisco, and manyother places around the world, with hiswife Helen Bryant, who is a newspaperand book writer. John Anders wordsof wisdom to Bryan Adams studentsare “do what you enjoy” and “if youjust want to be famous and have nopassion you will not achieve to your fullpotential.”

John AndersClass of: 1964

Our pick for Student of the Monthis Jesus Prado. Jesus is first lieutenant ofthe JROTC Armed Drill Team. Just likeant other teenager one of his goals is tograduate from high school and go tocollege. Prado says he used to be a veryshy and oppressed person before he cameto Bryan Adams High School, fromRobert T. Hill Middle School; but now heis a very outgoing student.

“I’m no longer afraid of whatpeople might think of me,” he said. Pradois a very reliable, highly motivated, welldisciplined, and is always focused on hisgoals, said Sergeant Guzman.

Jesus thinks being a student here at B.A. mayhelp him accomplish his goals. Some of his studyskills are taking good notes in class, payingattention and when ever there is a test he looksover his notes.

A quote that Prado always keeps in mindis, “It’s hard to live a successful life but just as hardto live an unsuccessful one.” –Kidd Craddock.

Once he graduates from high school he isthinking of going straight to college and studying tobe a psychiatrist because he loves helping others. When ever his friends are having problems he trieshis best on helping them and even if he can’t doanything about it, he at least tries his best to makethem feel better.

Where do you go after atiresome day at school? One of themost visited places by students isBryan Adams’ own “Dairyette”.Established in 1956 the Dairyette hasbeen providing its customers withquality burgers and fries along withsome of the most satisfying thirstpleasing beverageS. Allison, adedicated four year worker at theDairyette has commented thatthrough out the years some clientshave established a sort of ‘familyvibe’ with them. They’ve evenattended some of their most valuedcustomer’s funerals.

Another popular eating placeof the Bryan Adams alumni isGarland Rd.’s own “Keller’s”.Keller’s is an amazing establishmentlocated on 10226 Garland Rd. Itsprevious name was Jacks but despiteits change in name it is obvious thattheir foods quality has not decreased. They serve a wide variety of burgerswhich are all exquisite from theirsimple cheese burgers to their highlyordered number 14; “the works”.

This burger contains ALL themeats available to the restaurant.“I love the chili cheese fries theyhave and the meat they use tomake their burgers is really juicy”that’s what Norma Ochoasatisfyingly had to say aboutKeller’s. Both the Dairyette andKeller’s are local and are veryknow throughout the community. However they aren’t the onlyoptions the cougars have toexcite their taste buds. Suchrestaurants are Sali’s Restaurantwho has some of the mostdelicious pizzas and subs knownto man and is also an excellentplace to eat. Sali’s is an exquisiteItalian style restaurant; studentshave claimed their cheese andpizzas so good that they rival thatof Rome’s greatest restaurants.Sali’s is owned by MonicaValdivia who coincidentally, ismother to Bryan Adams graduatestudent Anthony Valdivia. Salisis located on 1238 Belt Line RdGarland, TX 75040.

A six foot, three and ahalf inch tall rabbit? Imaginehaving this creature as your bestfriend! Yes; something out ofthis world, huh?

Well, that is exactly whatmany people thought about thisyear’s Playhouse Productionproduced by the Bryan AdamsTheatre Arts Department.Harvey, originally written byMary Chase was later turned into afilm in 1950. Now in 2010, Mr.McCollum, our magnificent theatrearts teacher decided to present itfor the students, staff, andcommunity to enjoy.

“Harvey” proved to be one of thebest productions the departmenthas presented. Now, “Dracula”,“Two by Two”, and “Bus Stop”were very good and interesting, but not as imaginative andmysterious as Harvey. This “Alicein Wonderland” like play wasfilled with some of Bryan Adamsbest actors, such as Dan Curtis,Adela Quintero, Renata Jackson,

Kelsey Cook, Michael Moreno, andRichard Edwards, just to name afew. But the actors weren’t the onlyones who did an amazing job. Wemust not forget the crew, whom alsospent their personal time to make

the play as intriguing and eyepopping as it was. “One thing thatmade the play good was the bettersets, the various transitions, andMr. Roberts”, recalled crewmember Shaundra Gaston.

You don’t see the actors inthe stage acting, you find yourselfnext to them living in their shoesand breathing their own air, that’swhy the play was amazing andthat’s why if you didn’t see it thenyou missed one of the mostsentimental, creative, well builtplays that our theater departmenthas ever produced.

If the Band lost they had to perform the jumpsplit in front of everyone and if Belles lostthey had to march around Main Event justlike performed at our annual football games. While the Band & Belles continued theirbreathtaking battle, Senior President, NormaOchoa, was enjoying herself in anexceptional game with all her best of friends. The faculty had an incredible time launchingthe balls into the pins unfortunately a fewgutter balls were spoiling their game. Afteran hour and a half of mind-blowing fun itwas time to move on to the indescribableLaser Tag War between the seniors and thechaperons (Ms. Walker, Mr. Dauber,Ms.Barcena, Ms.Dunn, and Mr. Faulkner).Evidently, the seniors succeeded and triumphover the chaperons, who like Ms. Walker, snuck up behind several students and triedto scare them to death with her amusingcombat reflexes. We headed out covered insweat and chatting of the fantastic time wehad just had. With the large variety of arcadegames at Main Event we didn’t have enoughtime to play them all but we were sure to getour prizes from the gift shop before we left.On the bus ride back home all you could hearabout was the repeat of the seniors asking,“So when is our next Senior Event?”

Wo Fat is the “evidence” left of the70"s. They are inspired by BlackSabbath, ZZ Top, Captain Beyond, andLeslie West.

What amazed me the most wasthe bleak, yet colorful art work of thealbum, by Alexander Von Wieding, fromGermany. Over all, it is an album worthlistening to as you play shooter games,or just hang out with friends. For moreinformation about Wo Fat, visit Mr.Walter at room 131 or their websiteWoFat.net, Face Book, or MySpace fortour dates or album releases. Wo Fat is:

The first of many senior events for BryanAdams High School was on January 13 atthe Main Event in Lewisville. The seniorswere stoked to get there for a day of jam-packed fun. The bus was full of excitementand joy despite the frustration with the busdriver putting along at a “snail’s pace” – onthe highway! After finally arriving Ms.Walker directed us to the irresistible buffetwhere we indulged ourselves in BBQdelights. With our tummies bursting withsatisfaction we headed off to bowl somecompetitive fun. Eager to start, a few peopledecided to make the game a little moreinteresting by placing a bet with theiropponents. For example, one group ofstudents divided themselves into two teams,The Belles vs. The Band. The Belles teamconsisted of Taylor Hayes (a.k.a. LilPrincess), Shaundra Gaston (Lil Mamma),Malena Trigo (Trigo), Ana Hernandez (BigDaddy), Fabiola Resendiz (FBreezy), andJessica Cruz (JWeezy). The Band team wascomposed of Katie Moore (Katie), RodrigoGarcia (Drigo), Megan Munselle (Megan)Lawrence Sumbler (Lawrence) and DavidRuiz (David). The bet was sweet and simple;make the opponent perform a task thatdefines the organization of each team.

Mr. Walter is more than just a teacherin Bryan Adams, he’s a drummer, and a memberof a local band called Wo Fat. If you don’t knowwho they are, then look for them on Face Bookor MySpace. Wo Fat started 2011 with theirbrand new album release, “Noche DelChupacabra”. It’s made out of five incrediblesongs that mesmerize you into wanting more. The songs are long, catchy, and the bass, thebass is AMAZING. Unlike other bands, the bassis heard throughout the whole album. If you are a big music fanatic as I’ am, then it wouldn’thurt you to try and listen to these guys. Theirriffs are as addicting as potato chips; you justcan’t get enough of them.

If Ozzy Osbourne, Zack Wylde, JoshGilbert, and Tommy Lee, joined forces tocreate an album that would literally blowpeoples minds, it would sound like all (3/4)albums Wo Fat has released.

Slam! Our Cougar wrestlers began their season with a slamming start! The BryanAdams wrestling team had two wrestlers place 2nd and one place 3rd against Sunset HighSchool. Senior Dominique Martinez placed 2nd in the heavyweight class, and FernandoGaldemez also placed 2nd in the 189 lb. weight class. Coach Cheeseborough was nervousabout this year due to the loss of his star seniors such as Charles Lynch and MarquiseWilliams. However, senior Dominique Martinez, Roberto Guerro, and Fernando Galdemezstepped up. Also, freshman Ian Eastland is one of Coach Cheeseborough’s potential

“youngens”. CoachCheeseborough’s goals for histeam are to place in the upperhalf of district and to “have somekids place in regionals”. OurCougars have two tournamentscoming up in Arlington, and planto “hit hard” this January. CoachCheeseborough says, “If theystay in shape and do what I ask,we’ll do just fine”. There appearsto be a definite optimisticoutlook for our Cougars.

I think the di-rector, Tony Scott, hits his target dead-on in “Unstoppable”. With the help ofa pretty train executive named Connie(Rosario Dawson), Frank and Will(Chris Pine) escape colliding with whatshe calls “a missile the size of theChrysler Building.” Their final challengeis to chase the runaway train and stopit before it crashes into the middle of abusy Pennsylvanian city. “Unstoppable”is a movie I think everyone would like.

“Unstoppable” is a movie thatkeeps you guessing the whole waythrough. I was expecting a great dealfrom Denzel Washington but I wasn’texpecting the movie to be packed withso much action. Right from the begin-ning there was nothing but action inscenes where Frank (Denzel Washing-ton) is running on top of a speeding run-away freight train, that’s going at least70 miles per hour, to where Dewey(Ethan Suplee) turns the throttle to itshighest setting to stop the train.
