FROM THE PRINCIPAL‘S DESK

―Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man.‖

- Swami Vivekananda

Dear All,

The month of November has been significant and eventful. South City International

School observed National Education Day which is celebrated every year, on the 11th of

November. It is the birth anniversary of the great patriot and educationist, Maulana

Abul Kalam Azad. We salute the great freedom fighter and I encourage my students to

learn more about the life and contribution of this legendary personality.

We are looking forward to great changes in education with the New National

Education Policy, 2020. I would like to encourage our children, especially the senior

students to look up the NEP 2020. It is a progressive and radical policy offering many

good things. Soon there‘s going to be a lot changes in respect to education in India.

Education in India has always been considered to be of a high standard because Indian

schools train children to excel in whatever they undertake and our children do excel

wherever they go for higher studies abroad. We need to educate our children to have a

great deal of soft skill development. At the moment, all our students are participating

in various online activities to improve their soft skills. There have been an array of

events this month, from Launch of Students‘ Justice Cell, to Inter School Quiz, from

French Elocution to Science Exhibition. We at SCIS, encourage students to contribute

and participate in all these virtual events as much as possible to develop their

personalities. I would also like to remind my students that this is a year that is not to be

wasted, but it a year to discover and reinvent oneself.

Teaching and learning is a continuous process. With distinguished personalities like

Professor Sanjoy Mukherjee, from IIM , Shillong as Chief Guest, Dr. B.M Das from

the Physics Department of Presidency University as the Guest of Honour, and of

course with the support of the entire Science Faculty , we have had an immensely

successful first ever Online Science Exhibition. Students, who are the fresh ignited

minds of the present generation, have come up with innovative models and ideas.

Finally, I take this opportunity to wish each and every student of SCIS family A Very

Happy Children‘s Day. On that note, I would like to remind the students to think

about and reach out to the underprivileged children who cannot celebrate Children‘s

Day. Diwali is the festival of lights, ushering goodness, health, wealth, and prosperity

and these are my wishes for each and everyone on this Diwali. Every dark cloud has a

silver lining, so please do not give up hope. I want everyone to remain safe and

grateful. Remember, there is lot to be grateful for.

Warm regards,

John Andrew Bagul

Celebration of Diwali & Children's Day –14th November, 2020

‗Every Child is a different kind of flower and all together they make a beautiful garden.‘

On 14th November, 2020 , a series of videos were uploaded on the school‘s social media handles, featuring the teaching faculty and staff of the

institution. The day began with the address of our Principal where he wished each and every one a heartiest Diwali as well as a Happy Children‘s

Day. This was followed by videos of Chief Administrative officer Mrs. Mahua Lawrence and Vice Principal Mrs. Swati Nandi Dutt. Each one spoke

about how the students are being missed and how the campus looks lifeless without them. The wishes of The Head of the Hindi Department, Mrs

Rekha Singla was touching and emotional. The English Department and the Social Science Department presented short programmes as well. An

event can never be complete without a soulful rendition and mesmerizing dance performances by the Performing Arts Department. Each of the

videos was well appreciated by students, parents and well-wishers.

Synopsis of the workshop: The workshop was conducted by Mrs. Subha Das Mollick - a media teacher, writer and filmmaker

from Bichitra Pathshala. Mrs. Mollick stated about the importance of media education. She said that the media is playing a

vital role in our society and creating an impact on the school going children. There was a questionnaire session to know about

our media habits and its significance. After showing a short video on a documentary film, Mrs.Mollick stated that ‗media

artifacts are a construct, but they are made to look natural‘. She had shared quite a number of short videos wherein she

be asked to form opinions and discuss on different topics. Besides newspapers, video clippings could be shown so that the

students get the opportunity to learn more through discussion and debates. She also stated that social media plays a vital role

in the minds of the children so it should be given importance as well.

Conclusion: It was an interesting and enriching session, indeed. Mrs. Subha Das Mollick concluded saying that all of us should

think about media education could be introduced in the school curriculum in the best possible way and send opinions and

SCIS Virtual Science Exhibition on World Science Day

On November 10, 2020, South City International School observed ―World Science Day for Peace and Development‖. On this

occasion we organized the first ever Online Science exhibition of our school. With ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, social

distancing and lockdowns, the school cannot hold the usual in-person annual event but this virtual exhibition proved an

excellent tool to keep the students engaged and helped in sustaining their interest in learning science .

Ever expanding demands of civilization leaves behind an escalating amount of debris and disposed wastes, which is a threat to

the environment. Therefore the theme of the Science exhibition this year was ―Reduce, Reuse and Recycle‖, the golden

principle that largely promotes the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

For this exhibition the students had come up with innovative ideas of utilizing wastes and useless, leftover objects available at

home and had developed these materials into some working model or utility device based on scientific principles. The budding

scientists then captured their work/model along with underlying principle and working of the device in a short video and sent

it to their teachers. These videos were uploaded on School Social Media Page on World Science day.

For this exhibition of its own kind, we had the honour of having Prof. Sanjoy Mukherjee from IIM, Shilong as our Chief Guest

and Prof. B.N. Das from Department of Physics, Presidency University as our Guest of Honour among us. They meticulously

viewed the efforts of our young scientists and praised them for their zeal. They also shared valuable experiences and delivered

inspiring and motivating messages to the audience and especially to the students.

Here is the list of some of the exhibits which received special acclamation:

Coin Sorter Machine by Rudropriyo Sengupta of 6A

Automatic Mobile Sanitizer Dispenser by Souritra Kar of 8A

Mixer-Blender Jar by Mehak Chordia of 6B

Personal Portable Smartphone Projector by Arishit Lahiri Choudhury of 8A

Extraction of DNA from Banana by Divya Gulati of 11B

Hand Made Thermometer by Deep Doshi and many others.

The list is long. The ideas, hard work and enthusiasm of these young minds is truly praiseworthy.

This stupendous task could not have been conducted successfully without the guidance and support from our Principal, Mr.

John Andrew Bagul. According to Dr. Indrani Basu, HOD OF Science Department: ―Sir‘s vision, keen interest, regular inputs,

suggestions and ideas have served as an inspiration for the teachers of Science Department and have carried us through this

difficult journey.‖

The SCIS Justice Cell

The inauguration of the Justice Cell in our school, was much more than a mere club-addition in the school‘s life. As and when

the club was declared open, so was the will of its students and teachers. A will to sow the seeds of humanitarianism, secularism

and oneness in the hearts of the youth. The Justice Cell aims to work in creating a safe, educated and nutritional tomorrow, for

everyone irrespective of their age, race, gender, financial stance and other worldly attributes. We students are the ―tomorrow‖

rocking in the cradle of the present, and its upto us and only us, whether the day after will be sunny with the goodness of man

or grey with despair.

Four students from South City International School Aryaman Srimal, Tavishi Bagaria, Hrishita Dev and Mahee Singh

formulated the SCIS Justice Cell, aiming to educate and inform students and fellow peers about violence and injustice millions

around the world face to this day. We, the members of SCIS JUSTICE CELL, have hosted introductory sessions in the month

of July for the students of grades 6-12 in our school. With primary focus on ‗Sexual Trafficking and Bonded Labour‘, we not

only disseminated information but also encouraged participants to speak and debate on these topics that are usually thought of

as a taboo. We were happy to see the involvement and the passion the participants had for these sessions. We students have also

used social media to share our message, educate the society about the violent issues millions face around the world, but most

importantly, to encourage young change makers to understand our cause and help us bring justice to those wronged everyday.

MUN 2020

The Oxford Model United Nations conference was held

on the 13th-15th of November and the 21st-22nd of

November 2020. I, Tavishi Bagaria, was chosen as the

Assistant Director of the United Nations Commission on

the Status of Women. The UNCSW advocates for

promoting gender equality and women empowerment

which is also along my lines of interest considering the

fact that I‘ve also started an initiative based on menstrual

equity and normalizing conversations surrounding

menstruation, again a stigma in society. The committee

had two intriguing agendas- Women in STEM: Gender

Equality and the Empowerment of Women in the Era of

Climate Change and Women in Zones of Conflict:

Protection from Gender-Based Violence and Female Participation in Peacekeeping Efforts.

Both of these agendas focussed on issues that have been prevalent since time immemorial and this decision on Oxford Global‘s

part was well appreciated. The committee began at a good pace and since the MUN was based over 5 days, the debate wasn‘t

monotonous let alone the crisis we gave. Since this was an international conference, it was an outstanding insight into the

thought process of about 40 different delegates having constructive arguments and out of the ordinary solutions. This required

a series of hard work and dedication and I‘m so glad that I could be a part of it. My five days at Oxford Model United Nations

was an incredible experience and this wouldn‘t have been possible without the support from my Principal, MUN club teacher

coordinators, my parents, and my juniors. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my school

and Oxford for the same.

Galaxy Science and Technology Quiz

On the 1st of November, 2020, I Anish Kumar Arun took part in the Galaxy Science and Technology Quiz, organized by the Quiz

Foundation of India and the Rotary Club of Galaxy Chennai. This was a National Level quiz that was open for all students of

classes 9-12.

The quiz attracted more than 4000 participants from across India. All the participants would first have to sit for a preliminary

round that was held on the same day as the finals at 10 am. Only the top 100 scorers would qualify for the finals. The prelims were

extremely hard, and I was not expecting a position in the finals after completing it. However, an hour before the finals, I was

contacted by the organizers who informed me that I had made the top 100 and thus secured a seat at the much-awaited National

Finals.

The finals would be played over 32 questions, asked via zoom, and the Kahoot Quizzing App. A points system was set up that would

not only be based on the correctness of the answer but also the time taken to answer a question. A shaky start resulted in me

remaining at the back of the pack for the first 5 questions. As time went on, however, I slowly began getting a hang of the format

and things started to get a bit more comfortable. I had climbed into the top 50 by the 10th question. What followed next was an

incredible streak of fourteen consecutive correct answers, catapulting me into the top 20. My fourteen answer streak was the

longest streak for any participant in the finals. A top 5 finish was now firmly in my sights. by the 25th question, I was 12th and if

things would have continued going my way, then a podium or even the win would have been very much on the cards.

Unfortunately, a slight typo in a correct answer would see me slip down to 20th place. I ended the quiz by answering the last 5

questions, finishing 8th in the National finals. Only two answers separated the top 15 finishers. All winners in the top 15 were from

Chennai and Bengaluru, with the only exception being me and a participant from Noida.

This was definitely the largest quiz I have taken part in and thus an 8th place finish in India is a result that I definitely wasn't

expecting. The questions were at a much higher standard than that seen in the local circuit and the competition was also far

greater than what I had come to expect. This quiz will definitely go a long way in helping me hone my skills and improve my

performances at much higher levels.

TCS IT WIZ, 2020

On multiple dates between the 12th of October and the 16th of November, Anish Kumar Arun and Souritra Kar took part in the prestigious

TCS IT Wiz, the largest IT Quiz in India organized by the Tata Consultancy Services. This year's edition saw more than 15,000 students from

across India take part individually.

The quiz was held in two major phases- the two preliminary rounds and the main National Rounds. The first phase comprised two

separate preliminary rounds being held a week apart from each other. Both rounds consisted of 30 questions, with a time limit of 30 seconds

per question. Out of the 15,000 taking part in the preliminary rounds, only the top 128 would make it through for the national stage rounds.

Both Anish and Souritra managed to make it through into the top 128 in the nations (They were amongst only 3 students to qualify for the

national rounds from Kolkata).

The National rounds began with the Pre-Quarterfinals, which would see the number of participants drop to 64. Both Anish and Souritra

made it into the National Quarterfinals. Unfortunately, both students ended up finishing second in their respective rounds and missed out on

a spot into the top 16 In the country.

TCS IT Wiz is one of the most competitive quizzes on the National Circuit. While it is unfortunate that both the students narrowly missed out

on a spot in the Semis, this quiz provided both of them with an experience that both would never forget. According to Anish, this quiz has

definitely helped them further evaluate and improve their performances, and will definitely help them in future competitions.

10000 students taking part in the High School category.

Both the Quarter Finals and Semi-Finals had the same format, with the goal being to answer 25 questions as fast as possible. Out of the 10,000

students taking part, about 500 students have qualified for the finals. Anish has managed to crack both rounds and successfully qualify for the

National Finals. The finals are to be held on the 10th of December, 2020.

international organizations and non-governmental organizations to raise public awareness of violence against women. It is observed on

November 25 each year.

Ø Events around the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women are coordinated by the United Nations

Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).

Ø Every gender has equal importance in the society. Be it a man, women or other genders, everyone is God's child and should be

Creator House Assembly

Date: 9th November, 2020

Topic: National Education Day

The Creator House Secondary Section had presented the Virtual morning assembly on the topic - National Education Day.

Every year since 2008, November 11 is celebrated as Education Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul

Kalam Azad. He was independent India's first education minister.

Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin Ahmed bin Khairuddin Al-Hussaini Azad, was an Indian scholar, Islamic

theologian, independence activist, and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress during the Indian independence

movement. He was a key educationist who played an important role in developing the education system in independent India.

Maulana Abul Kalam also contributed to the establishment of educational institutes like Jamia Millia Islamia and IIT

Kharagpur. He strongly advocated education for women and free and compulsory primary education for children up to the age

of 14. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad passed away on February 22, 1958.As a young man, Azad composed poetry in Urdu, as well

as treatises on religion and philosophy. He rose to prominence through his work as a journalist, publishing works critical of

the British Raj and espousing the causes of Indian nationalism.

Creator House Students spoke about Education being extremely essential in one‘s life. Education makes people capable of

doing new things that can improve human living conditions and standards. Our whole life is the process of learning and

gaining new useful knowledge. Our first responsibility is to educate every child, especially the most marginalized among them,

in our own countries. This contributes to National Development, Prosperity and Stability. We should also emphasis on

educating children beyond our borders, not only because each child has an inherent human right to education, but also

because an educated Global population yields benefits for our own countries.
