Letters To The Romans2

A Note from Mother Nikki I just want to say thank you for the very warm and exuberant welcome I have received (and am still receiving!) at St. Peter’s. It already feels like home, and I couldn’t be more happy to be here and partner with you in God’s work in Rome, the larger church, and the world. God is doing something special here at St. Peter’s and I am very excited to see what the future is going to bring. It is a joy to get to see the church that is NOW, our children and youth, love and serve our God, the God of NOW. They are answering God’s call by being engaged, creative, and loving NOW, just as Jesus would have all of us do. That is, of course, a tribute to them, because they are phenomenal. And it is also a tribute to the whole of the church family here, because the next generation often learns how to be engaged, creative, and loving NOW from watching the generations before them do the same. Congratulations, St. Peter’s. You are a church on the move with a God who is here and now and going forward furthering the kingdom. I am honored to be here, on the move, with you.Blessings, Mo. Nikki

HELP MIKELL AND REMEMBER HENDREEMikell Camp and Conference Center began in 1941 as a summer camp for children and youth and has grown into a year-round facility for camps, conferences, and retreats. Hundreds and hundreds of us use it every single year. This summer it has become abundantly clear that Camp Mikell needs to replace Bishopstead, one of the guest cottages now elderly and ailing.

The Rev. Hendree Harrison was born the same year as Mikell and served his entire 38 years of ministry as a priest in this diocese. He grew up at St. Peter’s and went to seminary from this church. Six years ago, Hendree entered, as the Prayer Book says, into the glorious company of the saints in light. He left behind many who remember him and miss him—and are still a little miffed at his abrupt leave-taking.

What does one have to do with the other? Mikell was dear to Hendree from his days as a small boy camper in the late 1940’s through years as a camper and counselor and then as a dean and frequent board member. In fact, he was president of the board of governors at the time of his death. How wonderful it would be if we could replace that old decrepit cottage with a sturdy new one and name it in his memory!

There is already a memorial fund for Hendree at Camp but more is needed to build the new cottage. Will you help Mikell and remember Hendree at the same time?

Checks may be made payable to Mikell Camp and Conference Center

Saint Peter’s Report

The St. Peter’s Building Committee has now turned our project over to the architects of Surber, Barber, Choate & Hertlein to begin construction drawings. Once these are complete, the committee will put the project out to bid to three contractors. Our hope is to begin actual construction sometime in February of next year. Once construction begins, the architects are estimating the construction to last 8 months. We are very excited about this phase in the life of St. Peter’s, and we look forward to the day we can all enjoy a more accessible campus.

EYC Leaders: Lee Neidrach, Ben NeidrachExtraordinary work and support: Sheila Kinnebrew, Terri Borchardt, the clergy – they all were on board, both as workers and as cheerleadersIf I have somehow failed to list anyone who worked on The Market, my sincere and deepest apology! Special benefits beyond the money raised: the presence at Saint Peter’s of so many people from other churches and from the larger community. Many people who had never been inside our buildings came and found a warm welcome and a friendly congregation. The opportunity for multi-generational interaction was a moving and meaningful experience. Many of us with older children and grandchildren had the chance to get to know and enjoy the youth of the church. Their energy and their hard work impressed us and reinforced our desire to give them help on their pilgrimage. Many people were involved in this project from the original development of the idea in 2012 of a possible market as a fund raiser. John Herring came as our new rector and began talking about a pilgrimage for the youth. The two ideas seemed meant to meet, and The Saint Peter’s Art, Antiques, and Home Furnishings Market begin to take shape. The committee was formed and began meeting to brain storm and to plan. By late summer everyone had their areas of responsibility defined. A date in November was selected and placed on the church calendar. We began to advertise. The Rome News dedicated a full page article in the Life Style section of a Sunday edition and then followed up with a front page story during The Market. These gave us great exposure and boosted at-tendance and sales. Two excellent radio interviews increased coverage and reached other markets. We must also thank the twenty five business and public service locations who allowed us to place posters about the event on their premises. The Rome Tourism and Welcome Center helped post information on public websites and in their office and gift shop.Over 80 people donated art, furniture, silver, linen, crystal, decorative items. We did not make a complete inven-tory, but our guess is that we had over 1000 items that we sorted, priced, and arranged for sale. Then the won-derful members of this parish came out in full force with friends and guests from outside our walls. Everyone bought as generously as they had given. Everyone was excited and enthusiastic and made the market a success. Our original hope was to raise at least $10,000.00 and, by some miracle $15,000.00. John announced at the early service on November 17 that we had raised $17,000.00. By the time 10:00 church started, the people from the early service had flooded into Daniel Hall and had bought another $1800.00 worth. People bought much more at the Sunday half price sale. Including an initial gift by a parishioner of $1,000.00, we raised over $25,000.00 with this market. Counting the people in the community who were involved and the workers from Saint Pe-ter’s, more than a hundred people were actively involved in presenting The Market! What a loving and generous church we belong to and what a great town we live in.The committee cannot thank the church and the community enough for your tremendous response and generous hearts. To all the workers, thanks and congratulations, and to all who came – God’s great blessings upon you.George Thomason ( for the committee)

CANTERBURY TALES JANICE BRACKEN WRIGHT+This column shines a spotlight on Canterbury Club graduates whose lives our parish has touched through campus ministry at Berry College, Georgia Highlands College and Shorter University. Often you ask me, “Where are they now and what are they doing?” I think you will be surprised and delighted to hear their stories

Stephen Wyatt and Lindsay Wilson were members of Canterbury Club from 2005-2009. Lindsay was baptized at St. Peter’s on November 15, 2009. Stephen was received into the Episcopal Church at St. Peter’s on the same day. Here is an update from Stephen in his own words:

I remember being curious about Canterbury Club and the Episcopal Church from the beginning of my Berry College career. From the first time I visited a Canterbury Club event, I immediately felt welcome and I was excited to be there. I think my favorite Canterbury Club events were our on campus Celtic services on Wednesdays. This was such a great time to come together and have a sacred service among the trees and natural beauty of Berry College. I loved working with Janice Wright. She always made each meeting or service wonderful with her kindness and dedication.

Since graduating Berry in 2009 with my bachelor’s in music business, I started my graduate studies at the University of West Georgia in 2010 studying professional counseling and college student affairs. I worked first as a graduate assistant and then as a professional in housing and residence life until December of 2012. In December of 2012, I left UWG and start working as a Hall Director at Georgia Tech. I have loved getting to work with students in a residential setting as they work their way through their collegiate experience.

I am currently engaged to Lindsay Wilson who also graduated from Berry and participated in Canterbury Club. We have been engaged since May 8th of this year but have been dating since we were freshmen at Berry in 2006. We began attending St. Peter’s in 2007 and still attend as much as we can even though we no longer live in Rome. Lindsay graduated with her bachelor’s in Sociology and currently works as a Clinical Territory Manager for a medical equipment company. Lindsay and I plan to get married in May 2014 at Berry College with Janice officiating at the ceremony.

WORKSHOP ON ‘GRIEVING DURING THE HOLIDAYS’A three-hour workshop on “Grieving during the Holidays: Living with Loss” will be offered Saturday, December 14, in Daniel Hall. The time will be determined later. Look for this in your email. The program is free of charge. The morning is intended for anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. “We will gather as a community for shared experience, strength and hope as we discuss how our faith can undergird and sustain us as we walk, by faith, through the ‘valley of the shadow of death,’” said Dr. Doyle Hamilton, pastoral counselor, Care and Counseling Center of Georgia, who will lead the program. All are welcome.
