St. Peter’s Episcopal Church The Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost Lewes, Delaware Saturday, November 16, 2019, 5:00 p.m., Holy Eucharist, Rite II
Celebrant Blessed be God: ☩ Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. * THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.
Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
FIRST LESSON Isaiah 65:17–25 Reader A reading from the prophet Isaiah. For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I am creating; for I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy, and its people as a delight. I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and delight in my people; no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it, or the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days, or an old person who does not live out a lifetime; for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a hundred will be considered accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labor in vain, or bear children for calamity; for they shall be offspring blessed by the LORD — and their descendants as well. Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox; but the serpent— its food shall be dust! They shall not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, says the LORD . Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God. * GOSPEL Luke 21:5–19 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, Jesus said, “As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down.” They asked him, “Teacher, when will this be, and
* Indicates the People stand, as able. ☩ Indicates the People may make the sign of the cross.
what will be the sign that this is about to take place?” And he said, “Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is near!’ Do not go after them. When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately.” Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven. But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls.” Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

* CONFESSION OF SIN Deacon Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence is kept. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins ☩ through our Lord Jesus
Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
* THE PEACE Celebrant The Peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. GREETING AND BLESSINGS FOR BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES * THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer A, Book of Common Prayer, page 361 Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
Here a Proper Preface is said.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. ☩ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for
3
the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Celebrant and People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN .
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
* THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
* THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. All God’s people are welcome to receive the Holy Sacrament, including children. Please notify the Celebrant if you have difficulty coming to the altar rail and the Sacrament will be brought to you. * POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Celebrant Let us pray. People Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food
of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
* THE BLESSING * THE DISMISSAL Leader Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. People Thanks be to God. _________________________________________________________________________________ The flowers on the altar are given by Gordon Tanner and Robert Pátlan in honor of their 9th wedding anniversary, and by Denise Emery in loving memory of Jack Emery.

St Peter’s Readers will meet Sunday, November 17 at 4 p.m. in the Parish Hall Conference Room. Our book this month is How We Die by Sherwin Nuland. The Lewes City Council will be meeting on December 9th at 6:30 p.m. On the agenda for that evening is a proposal to rename a portion of Fourth Street in Lewes in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This name change would be honorary: no one’s address would be changed as a result of this proposal. At their July 2nd meeting the Vestry voted unanimously in support of this proposal, and they urge our members to attend this council meeting to show our support as a congregation for this proposal. The meeting will be held at the Council Chambers in Lewes City Hall, located at 114 E. Third Street in Lewes.
