I had no idea that Mr.. Winters alongwith his multi-talented wi e Kiki Currywere a part o a big art movement justorth o the toll way in Dallas. Te coupleot my attention when Daniel Yaneznnounced them as the winners in the 1st

    Annual DFW Art Awards.

I caught up with Mr. Winters atkypony Studios that is housed in the old

Valley View Center which once housednly the mall. Te studio is one o manyrt studios that are part o an art project,

Gallery at Midtown made up o over 40rt studios. Events are held monthly andnvolve bringing all the local visiting artistnd housed to the ore ront.

Mr. Winters sat com ortably athe lobby o his studio store ront andatiently told us that his “real” job as an

Architect affords him the luxury o havinghe studio and setting his own hours toevote to his work. He grew up aroundrt and his whole amily inuenced andncouraged him as he developed hiswn style and medium. As the recipient

the Expressionism award, he eelsonored. “We both are excited to o beenominated.”

Te Art Walk is something we will beovering in the uture and next monthwe will be eaturing Kiki Curry’s storyhat showcases her multi-talents. Weongratulate Mr. Winters on his awardnd much success.

    Book Review by Lucy Bocanegra

itle - D own: A Hard Lesson in LifeAuthor - Ruben Anuario

When I saw the title and cover o this book my rst impression wasthat it was something I could amiliarize with. I grew up in Dallas and

elt I might read about someone I know. Being that the writer is basedn the area, I assumed the whole book was based on his li e experience

growing up here. You know the saying about assuming! I contacted the writer and

n ormed him I would love to write a review about the book. Itnterested me to writer the review because it was a story based out o

Dallas. Mr. Anuario quickly in ormed me it was not a true story, butnspired by events he seen growing up in what was called D own (Drugown) in the mid to late 80’s. He also in ormed me it was not based in

Dallas, it starts in the Rio Grand Valley though the story ends in Dallas. What you will get in the story is the turmoil and quest o the main

character, Chito to get revenge rom his ather’s murderer. Along thepages and content o the story, you will eel as i you are watching amovie. Anuario re erences certain situations with music to t the moodand or scene.

D own is Anuario’s rst book and his intention is to inspire the youthto own up to their actions, He says, “Te decision you make today willeventually affect your tomorrow, either in a good way or in a bad way...Tat is entirely up to you.”

A Servant’s HeartPart IIby Bree Cast

Ever since I was a little girl, my parents always reminded us how blessed we were to have ood, shelter, clothing and our health. Every year, we would do some type o volunteer work at a shelter, orphanage home, achurch, even eeding people on the streets. We volunteered as a server, a greeter, just talking to someone. I keptup with this in my adult li e and even passed this servitude attitude down to my daughter.

Last year, I had the wonder ul opportunity o volunteering alongside Chris Huerta and Cowboys For Li eat Dallas Li e Foundation making sandwiches, you can read the article, “A Servants Heart” in the Show SceneMagazine’s second issue.

I bring this up because my article, A Servant’s Heart, has called my attention to plan a Cancer Awarenessproject. Last Year, I was a contestant in a pageant and my plat orm was Colon Cancer and ever since thatday, my thought was, I didn’t want it to stop afer the pageant was over, I wanted to continue researching All23 plat orms and nd out what more I could do to give these cancer patients and amilies what they need: a

riend, ood, clothing, toys or the kids, anything. My idea: I would like to gather Models with Cancer, Cancer survivors, kids, makeup artists, hair stylists,

ashion designers, anyone that would be interested in being a part o this project, not or money, but simply toraise Cancer awareness; with so many plat orms out there, I think it is important we all be educated.

I understand this is an extremely sensitive issue and I ask that everyone, anyone wanting to be involved berespect ul o that. God Bless You! And smile! It looks great on you!
