Gaming Last week I touched on the use of technology and the fine line between technology being a useful learning tool or an addictive distraction. One area of technology that has become extremely popular for many reasons is gaming. If you are experienc-ing challenges in regards to your child constantly gaming and need strategies to help then this up-coming seminar might help. On Monday 2nd July the Bridge will be holding a seminar for parents dealing with their child’s bad habits around gam-ing and provides an insight into the psycholo-gy and culture of gaming. This seminar will also help provide parents with strategies and re-sources to help reduce family conflict. Please re-fer to flyer inside this gazette for further details. Mid-Year Reports – delivered electronically Mid-Year Reports will be available after 4pm on Monday 25th June. The reports outline what chil-dren have achieved, areas that will be developed in the future and the role school and home has to play in this development. The reports provide par-ents with an opportunity to celebrate with their children their achievements while at the same time setting goals for future learning. Again, school reports will be delivered to fam-ilies electronically through the compass plat-form. A detailed note explaining to parents how they will access their child’s report will be provided in the coming weeks. Please make sure you have updated your email and contact details. This will make accessing com-pass easier. Annual Report to the School Community The Annual Report to the School Community is an opportunity for Guthrie Street Primary school council to share the year’s achievements, mile-stones, and improvements. It is also an opportuni-ty to reflect on the school’s performance and un-derstand where and how the improvement agen-da has impacted student outcomes. The Annual Report will be available to read on the school’s website: www.guthriestps.vic.edu.au
Good Sleep Habits I have summarised an interesting article (by par-enting expert Michael Grose) about creating good sleep habits for our children. The article men-tioned that many children today are sleep de-prived and struggle to receive the recommended nine to ten hours of sleep per night. The concern with this is that research has proven that sleep maximises brain growth, consolidates the day’s learning and ensures children are fresh for any future learning the next day. What was most alarming was that the links between sleep debt and poor mental health including anxiety and de-pression were indisputable! It was noted that children who develop good sleep patterns early in childhood tend to carry these into adolescence. If you are a parent of a young child and you are struggling to get them to sleep, Michael mentioned the following good sleep habits may be useful. Good sleep habits include: 1. Regular bed-times. Kids may fight this, but
be regular and let kids stay up a little later on weekends.
2. A wind-down time of up to 45 minutes prior to bed. This includes removing TV and other stimuli, calming children down and limiting food intake.
3. Bed-time routine such as story-telling and teeth-cleaning that signals psychologically that it is time for sleep.
4. Keeping bedrooms for sleep and not for TV. Bedrooms that resemble caves seem to be recommended.

Contact will be made with you in the coming weeks as we need to have numbers confirmed by the end of term. iPads Just a reminder that students require their iPads at school daily for learning tasks. It is quite challenging for teachers to plan activities that require the use of iPads when children are not bringing them to school. It is also essential that iPads are charged over night as we do not have the ability to charge them all at school.
