Pharmacist Immunization Bill Update by William Kirchain, PharmD

LSHP Public Policy Chair

The pharmacist immunization bill, authored by our colleague Representative Mills, has passed and has been signed into law. It will be effective as of August 15, 2010. The bill allows pharmacists who are registered with the Board as qualified to administer injections to immunize patients for influenza (and influenza only) without a Collaborative Drug Therapy Management (CDTM) agreement in place. Pharmacists wishing to administer other vaccinations, including pneumococcal vaccinations, will need to complete a CDTM agreement.

If a pharmacist wishes to participate he or she will need to complete a basic cardiac life support training program accepted by the Board; complete an immunization certification

program accepted by the Board; and register with the Board as an immunizing pharmacist. Current rules mandate that pharmacists wishing to continue providing immunizations obtain 1 hour of continuing education each year focused on immunizations. There are very helpful documents along with the required forms on the Board of Pharmacy’s website.

Pharmacy departments wishing to provide immunizations will want to coordinate with the infectious control staff and hospital administration. The actual provision of the service requires certain OSHA compliant policies and procedures, sharps disposal, vaccine administration record keeping and availability of emergency care for anaphylaxis and other allergic reactions.

Report of the Committee on Membership and Marketing By Lisa Ross, Committee Chair

The LSHP Membership and Marketing Committee, led by Lisa DiGioia-Ross (chair) and Richard Ponder (co-chair) was involved in many activities over the past year to enable us to increase and retain our membership. One of our biggest tasks was to prepare and administer a survey via SurveyMonkey to market LSHP, gauge member satisfaction, gather demographics on our current LSHP member population and assess membership needs. The survey questions were prepared primarily by Richard Ponder. The survey was sent out and participation was encouraged by having a drawing of all survey participants for free LSHP Annual meeting registration as a prize. Survey results can be found beginning below this article. Other activities the Membership and Marketing Committee were involved in are as follows:

• A comparison of the number of “virtual” or Facebook fan LSHP members to “actual” real life LSHP members was conducted. This revealed that 50% of the “virtual” or Facebook fan LSHP members are students. We had no list of current student members; therefore, we were unable to analyze this population further. The other 50% of the “virtual” or Facebook fan LSHP members were not students. Of this remaining 50%, 26% were paying members of LSHP, the remaining 24% were NOT. It was suggested, based on these observations that we need to use the Facebook LSHP page as a tool to promote joining LSHP as a paying member.

• A student reception and breakout session was set up and held by the Membership and Marketing Committee chairs immediately after the 3PM student education session on Friday May 28th, 2010 during the LSHP Annual meeting. The event was sponsored by a corporate sponsor (Robert D. Ross, MD, APMC) who purchased the pins and ice cream. We had about 20 students in attendance and served ice cream bars and passed out LSHP pins and a recruiting

handout. A copy of the recruiting handout is also available in the newsletter for your review on page 7.

• The committee asked that the two student liaisons of Xavier University and University of Louisiana Monroe (both student liaisons are members of the Membership and Marketing Committee) briefly discuss and promote LSHP at the honors and awards ceremonies of their respective universities held just prior to graduation. Roxie Stewart was able to do this at ULM’s farewell lunch on graduation day and effectively signed up several LSHP student members. LSHP membership is offered free to students upon graduating.

• Richard Ponder put together a presentation that can be presented during hospital pharmacy staff meeting to help recruit new pharmacist and technician members to LSHP.

• Lovie Lewis researched setting up a Paypal account linked to LSHP’s website to enable members to renew or join online in this manner . The cost is not prohibitive and she felt it may attract tech-savvy younger pharmacists and technicians to join LSHP.

• During the LSHP Board Meeting on Thursday May 27, 2010 the Membership and Marketing Committee discussed with the LSHP Board of Directors the possibility of implementing improvements in LSHP’s existing website. A detailed discussion ensued and the Membership and Marketing Committee was commissioned to submit to the Board of Directors and LSHP Office links to several websites that they would like the LSHP website to be modeled after. The idea was that if improved the LSHP website could serve as an effective marketing and recruiting tool for LSHP. The committee is still working on this final task.

LSHP 2010 Membership Survey Results By Lisa Ross, Committee Chair

The membership survey went out in spring of 2010. The survey had 24 questions and was estimated to take participants 15 minutes to complete due to it’s predominantly multiple choice format. Of the total 720 LSHP members (member categories include active, retired, supporting, student, national and technician) at that time, only 618 members were sent the survey link as LSHP lacked contact information/email addresses on the 102 student members. Of the 618 members that received the survey, 129 responded (about a 20% response rate). The survey responders were 50/50 male/female, mostly 56 years old and older and had been in LSHP over 15 years. The vast majority is satisfied or very satisfied with their LSHP membership. Other survey results are as follows: • The top 3 responses for the motivating factor for joining LSHP were advocacy for the profession, CE/educational offerings and networking opportunities.

• An overwhelming majority (over 90%) of those who responded said they pay for 100% of their LSHP membership themselves. • An overwhelming majority (over 96%) of those who responded said they had plans to renew their membership next year. • When asked whether or not they participated in their local chapters (i.e. SELSHP, NELSHP), close to 75% said they are participants in their local chapters. • When asked to rate 4 different statements about LSHP, the majority of participants agreed or strongly agreed that LSHP provides the member with the tools and resources necessary for self promotion and gaining recognition within the organization, is recognized as a leading voice of their profession and is essential

Survey results continued on page 6.

Page 6: Volume 19, No.3 May/June 2010 FROM THE DESK OF THE …LSHP Public Policy Chair The pharmacist immunization bill, authored by our colleague Representative Mills, has passed and has

to their career success. See table 1 below. • When asked to rate the value of various LSHP programs and member benefits (ie. advocacy of the professions of pharmacist and technician). The results were varied but positive overall as the majority felt that LSHP’s various programs and benefits were at least valuable or very valuable if not essential. See table 2 on page 8 for the full results. • Close to 62% or 72 people said they did participate in an LSHP annual or midyear meeting in the past 2 years. When asked why they have not attended, the 3 most popular responses were schedule conflicts, lack of time and prohibitive cost. Eighty-two percent (82%) pay to attend LSHP conferences themselves. • Most people who replied attended between 1 and 3 educational programs in the past 2 years sponsored by other professional organizations (not LSHP). Unfortunately, the names of these other sponsoring organizations were not provided to me for my survey analysis at this time. We will investigate this further. • Over 55% of those who responded agreed the website was valuable as a source of information. Over 16 % said they did not know if the website was valuable. The comments written when asked about how to increase functionality on LSHP’s website in the future have not been provided to me for my survey analysis. We will obtain and consider those comments later. When asked what social networking sites they participated in if any, an overwhelming 75 people skipped this question. As the majority of the study participants were older LSHP members,

this question may have been directed toward the wrong people. Of the 54 people who answered this question, over 92 % used Facebook. Our Facebook page for LSHP is just over a year old now and in late May had about 72 fan members. Linked In was the second social networking site used by LSHP members at approximately 15 %. No members who responded used Twitter.

Although the overall results of this survey were favorable, there is possible participant bias as those LSHP members willing to take the survey are likely to be those who value or feel strongly in favor of LSHP. In addition, this survey demonstrates that our LSHP members that responded are aging and we need the student and new graduate generation to join LSHP. Recruiting activities for the organization should continue to focus on this population. The lack of student member participation in the survey is a very unfortunate and unexpected flaw of this survey. Another shortcoming of this survey analysis is the written comments that currently have not been provided. The Membership and Marketing Committee and the Board of Directors of LSHP plan to survey the student members and analyze those results as well as review the comments not provided at the time of this analysis and compile the final results. Further decisions will be based on those final results. Comments and suggestions about our survey and the preliminary results discussed here should be directed to Kati at [email protected]. Thanks for your participation.
