Morales also sponsored the on-going free circumcision project at theMRC. In the past three days, some500 young boys had benefited fromthe annual project.

Morales said he will do the sameproject in nearby Barangay Camachil-es. He disclosed that CamachilesBarangay Captain Jessie Duran hadasked him to sponsor the circumci-sion project in their barangay.

Morales announced the estab-lishment of the Mayor Miguel Mo-rales birthing station at the ruralhealth unit at MRC. The late Maba-

lacat mayor is the grandfather ofMayor Morales.

“The MRC and the other reset-tlement centers in town are quitefar from the town proper and hos-pitals. We must bring valuablehealth service closer to them,” saidMorales.

David Santos, a resident ofMRC, said Morales had “hit themark” in improving health care ser-vice at resettlement centers. Headded that they could hardly makeboth end meet in these hard timesand spending for one’s healthwould make it more difficult forthem.

Safe sideNO CAUSE for hysteria and panic now.

The government is implementing stricter bio-security measures and farm accreditation systems inthe wake of the new multi-strain swine flu virus thathas killed over a hundred people in Mexico – thecountry south of the USA not the Pampanga town.

Quarantine checkpoints have been set to preventthe entry of pork from Mexico and other affected areas. This, even if the Philippines has no pork imports fromMexico.

Thermal scanners have been put up at the NinoyAquino International Airport to screen even just thefeverish among incoming passengers. This, even asthere are no flights from Mexico coming to Manila.

Just being on the safe side there. The World Animal Health Organization or Office

International des Epizooties (OIE) has reported that“there is no evidence that this virus is transmitted byfood,” and that it is “not justified to name this diseaseswine influenza (SI) as it is not technically the SI virusbut a multi-strain one, which includes in itscharacteristics swine, avian and human viruscomponents.”

The WHO furthered that in the absence of anyanimal disease outbreak in the three countriesconcerned where the disease germinated, it wouldbe better to call this illness as the “North Americaninfluenza.”

As “urgent scientific research must be started inorder to know the susceptibility of animals to this newvirus” precautionary measures are well placed.

Better safe than sorry.

Blind sideDENIALS WERE the order of the day at thesangguniang panlalawigan.

It was loudly whispered that arguments on theexclusion of the SP members from shares of thedevelopment funds led to fisticuffs at a session heldin Clark.

The reported pugilists – BMs Cris Garbo andJohnny Quiambo – have both issued denials anythingother than a shouting match ever happened.

So there, they have spoken. So stop speculatingon the scratches on the arms of Art Punzalan, chief ofstaff to Vice Gov. Yeng Guiao and the slight limp onBM Tars Halili who reportedly tried to pacify theallegedly raging fighters.

No constructive use in perpetuating talks comingfrom the blind side. Let’s just wait for the rematch.

THE BASIC rule in winning elections is: There is no basic rule inwinning elections. Winning is a combustion from a fusion of talent, hard work, resources and luck. Lots of luck.

Looks play a great deal too. A comely countenance workswonders. Read Lito Lapid here in the universal sense, andMabalacat’s Boking Morales in the relative sense, vis-à-vis hisarchrival Anthony Dee. So it went in all elections the two contestedthat Boking was likened to Sharon’s ex, Gabby Concepcion, andDee to Bal…, oh, never mind. I don’t relish being accused of “facial”discrimination here.

But looks – not-so-good to outright ugly – are liabilities that canbe turned to assets. This is best exampled by Tirso G. Lacanilaoof Apalit, may he rest in peace.

At the first appearance of the generally-accepted-as-aesthetically-challenged Tirso on the political stage, his electionposters were plastered with stickers stenciled PANGIT in big boldletters.

Winning elections

Instead of being disheartened, Tirso foundthere the inspiration that propelled him to victory. He got himself monikered Pogi, an irony thateasily tickled the funny bone of the electorate. Then he made self-deprecation the high note ofhis campaign pitch.

On the entablado, Tirso in all seriousness:“Sasabyan da pu deng kanakung kalaban ing lupakung kabayu. Mangalaram la pu ren. Ikayu naing makapagpatune e ku pu lupang kabayu. Lupaku pung tsonggo! “ (My rivals say I look like ahorse. They are liars. You, yourselves can seethat I don’t look like a horse. I look like a monkey!)His audience never failed to explode in laughter.

The electorate literally guffawed Tirso on hisway to the Apalit town hall in his two terms asvice mayor and three terms as mayor.

Contrast this to my favorite never-winning nay-surrenderee. He gets mad at the slightest allusionto his imperfection. I remember in 2001, OdyFabian got his ire and a suit for slander after thenow-dearly-lamented The Voice editor announcedover our Alas Kuwatro Na! radio program: “Bawalang pangit sa Mabalacat.”

Filipinos are a sucker for the underdog. The perennial loser John Santos – again, ofMabalacat – parlayed his talunan image to solidvotes thus: “Malunus na ko pu kanaku. Sinawana ku pung masasambut. Patakmanan yu na kuman pung panyambut.” (Have pity on me. I amtired of losing. Please give me a taste of victory.)John, the self-proclaimed Richard Gomez dead-ringer, stayed nine years at the sangguniangpanlalawigan.

After being thwarted twice in his run for theAngeles City sangguniang panglungsod, JaySangil changed his campaign tack from crusadingjournalist-at-your-service to wisecracking wit.

Jay satirized himself thus: “Nung baga kengderby, pang-champion na ku pu ngeni uling meka-adwa na ku.” (If it were a three-cock derby, I amgoing for the championship, having taken two hitsalready.) He is now into his second term.

Time to end the lessons with these twosamples. Enough of gratis et amore. I got a lot ofneeds too. More lessons are given – for a fee.Interested parties may contact me at this paper’soffice.

Let’s TalkAbout itMinerva Zamora-Arceo

TWO NIGHTS ago, my friendpaid me a surprise visit. It wasvery late and he seemed to bedrunk. What made me worriedwas the fact that he was intears. Supposedly men don’tcry (although I know that Jesuswept and a lot of other famousmen also did).

“It’s finally all over with us,”he told me. My friend was refer-ring to his relationship with hisgirlfriend. They were engaged forfive years and was about to getmarried this June. But some-thing happened: Her childhoodsweetheart came back from theUnited States and they have re-kindled their love affair.

Yes, my friend is brokenhearted! Broken heart (or heart-break) is a common metaphorused to describe the intenseemotional pain or suffering aperson feels after losing a lovedone, through death, separation, moving, being rejected, or othermeans.

As my friend was sharing hisheart woes, the line of HelenReddy’s song came into mymind: “I can’t say goodbye to youno matter how I try. You’re sucha part of me, without you I woulddie.”

For many people having abroken heart is something thatmay not be recognized at first,as it takes time for an emotion-al or physical loss to be fullyacknowledged. As Jeffrey Mous-saieff Masson puts it: “Humanbeings are not always aware ofwhat they are feeling. Like ani-mals, they may not be able toput their feelings into words.”

This does not mean we haveno feelings. Well-known psy-chologist Sigmund Freud oncespeculated that a man could bein love with a woman for sixyears and not know it until manyyears later. Such a man, with allthe goodwill in the world, couldnot have verbalized what he didnot know. He had the feelings, but he did not know about them.

It may sound like a paradox— paradoxical because when wethink of a feeling, we think ofsomething that we are con-sciously aware of feeling. AsFreud put it in his 1915 articleThe Unconscious: “It is surelyof the essence of an emotionthat we should be aware of it.Yet it is beyond question that wecan ‘have’ feelings that we do not

know about.”Even the Holy Bible has a

passage on the subject: “Insultshave broken my heart and left meweak, I looked for sympathy butthere was none; I found no oneto comfort me” (Psalm 69:20. Inthis verse, King David explainsthat insults have broken hisheart, not loss or pain. It is alsopopular belief that rejection, ma-jor or minor, can break an individ-ual’s heart. This heartbreak canbe greatly increased if rejectedby a loved one or someone whomyou respect.

Now, going back to my friend. As I looked at him, I was remind-ed of the words of England Danand John Ford Coley. “Every nowand then I cry. Every night youkeep staying on my mind. All myfriends say I’ll survive it justtakes time.”

So, how do you mend a bro-ken heart? This was the ques-tion he posed to me. I wascaught by surprise but I was pre-pared already. Having been bro-ken hearted several times over,I can say I am an expert on thesubject.

Accept it. No matter whatyou do, it is the end a beautifulrelationship. If there is a begin-ning, there is always an ending. You can’t control the feeling ofthe other person. When itcomes to love, two hearts mustbeat as one. If there’s only onethat beats, then it is not love atall. Instead of feeling sorry foryourself, be glad that you werepart of the person’s life before.

It’s not the end of the world.Just because you won’t seeyour loved anymore, the worldis going to end. The fact is: thewind will continue from blowing, the sun from shining, and thesea rushing to shore. Yourfriends and enemies may talkabout the failed relationship butthat’s part of life. You are still incontrol of your life. You can evensing the Every Brothers’ song:“I’m through with romance, I’mthrough with love. I’m throughwith counting the stars above.”

Move on. It’s okay to think ofyour beloved for a day or a week. But after that, move on. Countyour blessings. That personmay not the right person for you.I have known a lot of people whosaid, “I should have not marriedearly in life.” Or you might besinging the song of Ogie Alcasid:

“Bakit ngayon ka lang dumatingsa buhay ko.” The break upmight be a sign that someonemuch better is just waiting foryou.

Find another love. Easier saidthan done. I am sure you haveheard it before: “I won’t find an-other love but you.” What theyreally meant is that they won’topen their heart again for anoth-er new love. Instead, listen toyour heart. Love will find a way. “Ibelieve for everyone who goesastray,” Tom Jones sings, “somewill come to show the way.”

These rules are not foolproof. There are those that despitewhat they do, they continue tobe broken hearted. And although“heartbreak” is usually a meta-phor, there is a medical condi-tion -- appropriately known asbroken heart syndrome -- wherea traumatizing incident triggersthe brain to distribute chemicalsthat weaken heart tissue.

Broken heart syndrome isclinically different from a heartattack because the patientshave few risk factors for heartdisease and were previouslyhealthy prior to the heart mus-cles weakening. The recoveryrates for those suffering from“broken heart syndrome” arefaster than those who had heartattacks and complete recoveryto the heart was achieved withintwo weeks.

The symptoms of a “brokenheart” can manifest themselvesthrough psychological pain butfor many the effect is physical.Although the experience is re-garded commonly as indescrib-able, the following is a list ofcommon symptoms that occur:a perceived tightness of thechest, similar to an anxiety at-tack; stomach ache and/or lossof appetite; partial or completeinsomnia; anger; shock; nostal-gia and apathy (loss of interest).

Other symptoms includefeelings of loneliness; feelings ofhopeless and despair; loss ofself-respect and/or self-esteem;medical or psychological illness(depression, for example), sui-cidal thoughts (in some cases);nausea; fatigue; constant or fre-quent crying; a feeling of com-plete emptiness; the thousand-yard stare; and in extreme cas-es, death.

TODAY IN HISTORY

ON THIS DAY in 1945, holed upin a bunker under his headquar-ters in Berlin, Adolf Hitler com-mits suicide by swallowing acyanide capsule and shootinghimself in the head. Soon after,Germany unconditionally surren-dered to the Allied forces, end-ing Hitler's dreams of a "1,000-year" Reich.

Since at least 1943, it wasbecoming increasingly clear thatGermany would fold under thepressure of the Allied forces. InFebruary of that year, the Ger-man 6th Army, lured deep intothe Soviet Union, was annihilat-ed at the Battle of Stalingrad, and German hopes for a sus-tained offensive on both frontsevaporated. Then, in June 1944,the Western Allied armies land-ed at Normandy, France, andbegan systematically to pushthe Germans back toward Ber-lin. By July 1944, several Ger-

Adolf Hitler commits suicideman military commanders ac-knowledged their imminent de-feat and plotted to remove Hitlerfrom power so as to negotiate amore favorable peace. Their at-tempts to assassinate Hitlerfailed, however, and in his repris-als, Hitler executed over 4,000fellow countrymen.

In January 1945, facing asiege of Berlin by the Soviets,Hitler withdrew to his bunker tolive out his final days. Located55 feet under the chancellery, the shelter contained 18 roomsand was fully self-sufficient, withits own water and electrical sup-ply. Though he was growing in-creasingly mad, Hitler continuedto give orders and meet withsuch close subordinates as Her-mann Goering, Heinrich Himmlerand Josef Goebbels. He alsomarried his long-time mistressEva Braun just two days beforehis suicide.

In his last will and testament,Hitler appointed Admiral KarlDonitz as head of state andGoebbels as chancellor. He thenretired to his private quarterswith Braun, where he and Braunpoisoned themselves and theirdogs, before Hitler then alsoshot himself with his service pis-tol.

Hitler and Braun's bodies werehastily cremated in the chancel-lery garden, as Soviet forcesclosed in on the building. Whenthe Soviets reached the chancel-lery, they removed Hitler's ash-es, continually changing their lo-cation so as to prevent Hitler dev-otees from creating a memorialat his final resting place. Onlyeight days later, on May 8, 1945,the German forces issued anunconditional surrender, leavingGermany to be carved up by thefour Allied powers.

“NO MATTER how successful we are in securing air entitle-ments or no matter how many airlines will be convinced to flyhere, still we need more passengers to sustain the flights,”thus said Arch. Nestor Mangio, chairman of the Clark Interna-tional Airport Corp. (CIAC).

Of course the passengers are an important factor to ensurethe full development of the Diosdado Macapagal InternationalAirport (DMIA) as a premier airport in the country. That is whyMangio said CIAC is now doing the tourism road show to pro-mote the flights at DMIA.

Mangio is even appealing to all to patronize the airlines fly-ing in Clark to increase passenger traffic. At present, AsianaAirlines is one of the biggest carrier in Clark. Asiana was namedairline of the year by the Air Transport World (ATW). They areflying in 62 major cities and destinations worldwide includingChina, Japan, Korea, United States, London, Paris, India, Ma-laysia, Singapore, Hongkong, Taiwan, Russia and Sydney. Ithas 65 modern aircraft and the first airline to be ISO 2002 cer-tified for aircraft maintenance.

But of course, there are a lot of reasons why people fly via acertain airport. It could be convenience, accessibility, comfortor safety. As for DMIA, Mangio said everything is being put intoplace.

The chairman said CIAC, which manages DMIA, has a verydynamic and excellent team. He calls it a team because every-one in CIAC is really doing his own part to complete all theingredients for the success of the airport. “Ï am really happythat Mr. Chichos (Victor Jose Luciano, CIAC president) is there. He is a very good team player. The board, where I sit as thehead, gives direction to the management and Chichos executethe plans very well,” Mangio said.

Aside from the energetic team, Mangio said the Terminal 2and other facilities are being prepared. As early as last year, the CIAC chairman said they have talking with an investor fromKuwait, who is known as the second richest man in the MiddleEast and one of the top 100 billionaires named by FortuneMagazine last year.

The said investor developed Barsa Al-am in Egypt and DubaiAirport while it offers to develop the whole aviation complex withadditional 2,000 hectare in Sacobia or the Next Frontier. Man-gio said the first talks were unsuccessful although new talksare on so he is hoping that it would be for the best.

DMIA’s Terminal 2, pegged at P6 billion, is designed to ac-commodate more passengers for DMIA from the current twomillion to seven million passengers. This is part of CIAC’s me-dium-term development plan. This is in preparation to the influxof international and domestic passengers brought by Tiger Air-ways, Cebu Pacific, SeaAir and Asiana airlines. DMIA record-ed three million passengers last year and at the rate it is going, there is no doubt that such projection will be accomplished.

DMIA has 56 flights a week. More and more people travel atease through DMIA. Most of the flights are Clark to Hongkong,Macau, Bangkok, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and do-mestic destinations like Cebu and Caticlan.

But there is more, he said they are also planning to put up ahigh speed train to provide better accessibility for the airport.

Mangio said that despite the current global economic cri-sis, DMIA likewise stands firm as a logistics center in Asia. Headded that CIAC has secured air entitlements to at least 20countries including Qatar, Kuwait and United Arab Emirates.

As a man who understands aviation, tourism and globaltrends, Mangio said that DMIA is the next big thing in the avia-tion industry. He said that in the future Philippines will take abig share of the tourism market, especially in health and well-ness.

He said retirees prefer Philippines because of its climate, standard of living, and its people. He added that our country isbetter than Thailand so it is really important for us to grab theopportunity and keep abreast of the latest trends and establishthe required infrastructure.

Patronize DMIA

Sa Mayo 13 pa kasi ang showing nila and any moment,

Mukhang may kamag-anak at kaapelyido siyang bigatin

doon.Getz n’yo na?

Nepomuceno, in astatement, disclosed thatMamac had yet to remitP1,980,032 million in gar-bage fees between August2007 and December 2008.For the first quarter thisyear, Barangay Balibagoposted 476.71 tons ofwastes amounting toP381,368, it added.

Mamac, in a phone in-terview yesterday, said heand other village chiefs“had no knowledge of ow-ing the city such hugedebts.” He questioned thetiming of the disclosurethat they had incurreddebts, saying that “is notthe real issue.”

He said “they couldhave been lying because Iwas not the village chiefyet in August 2007.”

Balibago had disposed2,475.04 tons of garbageat the City Material Recov-ery Facility (MRF) be-tween August 2007 andDecember 2008. For 19months, Barangay Baliba-go did not pay its obliga-tions to the city govern-ment amid the deteriorat-ing condition of the busi-ness district, the state-ment said.

failed to remit a total ofP22,290,735 million duringthe same period.

City AdministratorMark Allen Sison notedthat from 180 tons of gar-bage being collected dai-ly in the city the numberhad been reduced to 80tons per day due to “recy-cling and segregation.”
