halil Karimov of the Republic of Tajikistan has been selected to receive the 2018 Peter

Hathaway Capstick Hunting Heritage Award. This honor will be presented by DSC at its Convention and Expo, Legacy, at Saturday evening’s banquet, Jan. 6, 2018.

Named after the well-known American author whose defense of the international big game hunting community and the role of conservation of wildlife and its habitat made him a household name, the award is the most prestigious honor given by DSC. The Capstick Award is presented to individuals or organizations whose achievements reveal a sustained and significant contribution to the conservation of wildlife and its habitat.

Khalil Karimov is the living, breathing embodiment of the vision of the award. A professional hunter, guide, conservationist and wildlife visionary nonpareil, he is responsible for changing the face of hunting in Tajikistan. Mr. Karimov established the Hunting and Conservation Alliance of Tajikistan (HCAT), a non-governmental organization whose profits from sustainable hunting are reinvested into nature conservation and community development in and around the conservancies.

“This exceptional man is the epitome of the hunter/conservationist ethic. Khalil Karimov boldly and transparently involves local communities in Tajikistan’s sustainable hunting programs. The major consequences of this policy are the consistent development of those communities and the dynamic, scientifically supported conservation of habitat and wildlife. This message of courage, common sense and mutual respect transcends all borders, all time zones and all language differences in the quest for the sustained conservation of the world’s wildlife patrimony,” said Fiona Capstick, widow of Peter Hathaway Capstick.

“Mr. Karimov is widely recognized as the architect of a wildlife management policy that has earned the respect of the international community – the kind of system that will provide indisputable evidence of the value of hunting as a crucial and indispensable component of sound wildlife management strategy for generations,” said Richard Cheatham, chair of the Capstick Award Committee.

Mr. Karimov’s achievements and accomplishments make him eminently qualified to join the ranks of the Capstick recipients. CT

t’s our favorite time of year!Some of us have been dove and teal hunting. Others have made the trek to

Alaska, Colorado or New Mexico in pursuit of bear, elk and pronghorn. Even more have been practicing at the archery or rifle range, filling feeders at the ranch and setting trail cameras, all in preparation for deer season.

It’s fall, when all attention turns to hunting.We’re grateful for the bountiful wildlife we have in Texas and for the wildlife

managers and state agency that maintain it for future generations.Abroad, we’re grateful for those who embrace the notion of sustainable hunting.

At DSC, we’re happy to support their efforts, whether it involves training locals to be professional hunters, maintaining a rhino preserve, running anti-poaching patrols or conducting research on leopard populations.

We’re grateful for Department of the Interior Sec. Ryan Zinke, who instructed his agencies by a Secretarial Order to expand hunting and fishing and increase access to public lands.

We are aware that more people need to be introduced to our lifestyle, and we need to support the efforts that reach out to future hunters of all ages.

n September 13, DSC and DSC Foundation debuted an ambitious campaign – “We Hunt for Life” – in order to reach hunters and non-hunters with the message

that international big game hunting is beneficial, if not essential, for the survival of wildlife and wild habitats.

In order to address the fact that support for hunting, particularly big game hunting, has been eroding for decades, We Hunt for Life will counteract the reluctance of hunters to engage and debate with those opposed to the practice. Whether due to apathy, or an unwarranted sense of immunity from public opinion and shifting values, the hunting community has been largely ineffective in telling the public about the conservation benefits of hunting.

DSC and DSC Foundation want to spark a new conversation with its We Hunt for Life campaign. These bold, innovative messages will be promoted on social media, primarily Facebook, in a series of video clips, as well as on the DSC Foundation website, www.dscf.org.

Noted conservationist and champion of the wild, President Theodore Roosevelt recognized the crucial role of hunters. He said, “The excellent people who protest against all hunting, and consider sportsmen as enemies of wild life, are ignorant of the fact that in reality the genuine sportsman is by all odds the most important factor in keeping the larger and more valuable wild creatures from total extermination.”

Richard Cheatham, president of DSC Foundation, explains how this works in present-day conservation. “Despite a conventional notion that has been blindly accepted as fact, hunting actually protects wildlife. Hunting preserves and protects wilderness. Hunting develops and encourages conservationists. Hunting provides livelihoods to multitudes of people, many of whom rely completely on it.”

Commenting on the human/animal conflicts that arise due to human encroachment, Cheatham points out, “Hunting is an important tool that mitigates such conflict that otherwise would end in the indiscriminate killing of many species, including those at risk, such as lion and elephant. Additionally, hunting provides the purest form of protein known to man and feeds millions, including those who otherwise have little or no access to meat.”

Cheatham concludes, “These aren’t simply opinions made up by hunters − they are well-documented facts. And it is past time that hunters go on the offensive and take the message to the public.”

DSC, respected by hunting organizations and non-hunting conservation organizations alike, is uniquely positioned to lead the fight. DSC will work with like-minded organizations, and will make the facts available to anyone who seeks them. DSC will be the voice that has been missing too long. CT

y African safari took place a dozen years ago, and my Alaska Yukon moose fell to my rifle six years later.

Yet rarely does a week go by that I do not feel a bit of the thrill that I experienced stalking the savanna or climbing the mountains. The reason is not the mounts on the wall at the office or at home, the journal entries or the stories written, but rather the items I wear and use while making new memories − items made from the hides of the animals taken.

My Cape buffalo has accompanied me to Canada and helped me climb in search of mountain game, as well as virtually everywhere that I have ventured forth with gun or bow in hand. My moose has returned to Canada, this time British Columbia, and helped me hunt black bear. They protect rifles, shotguns and knives. They have traveled with me all over Texas in search of feathers or fur. They have provided special gifts to friends that I hold dear.

I would highly recommend you turn your hides into trophies. Whether similar to how I used mine or completely different, you will be glad you did. Here are some possibilities, and the artists I chose – all provided excellent service in addition to fine quality work. As for price, well, let’s just say

that I have never regretted the expense once I had the items in hand.

The first category is household or decorative items. I chose the Flagg Group, Inc. of Dallas for these items. Following my African safari, they made a beautiful decorative pillow with a Robert’s gazelle skin on one side and a Impala skin on the other. They made two highly functional and sturdy pillows from wildebeest hide, and fashioned a traditional fly whisk from its tail. Following a mountain hunt, they worked with me to create a unique floor rug combining the skins from a Dall sheep and a mountain caribou.

The second category is footwear. Russell Moccasin is renowned for high quality, durable and attractive outdoor footwear. They can make custom footwear from the hide of nearly any trophy. I was hand-fitted by the Russell Moccasin artisans at the DSC convention for boots to be made from my Cape buffalo hide. I brought the leather with me, and they chose what they needed. I ended up with three pairs – a light PH model for early season and Africa again someday, an all-leather PH for all-season Texas hunting, and their toe-lace Mountain Hunter to help me tackle the mountains where I

hoped adventure awaited. My PH boots have traveled all across Texas and down to Argentina, and my Mountain Hunter boots have made three trips to Canada. All have served me well, and all have been a joy to own.

The third category is leather specialty items. Dick Murray of Murray Custom Leather offers a wide array of high-quality, useful and attractive leather items. He will work with game hides, and the result is personalized leather items that combine art with function. His work protects items that are priceless to me, and his items have become priceless to me as well.

My first round of items from Murray Custom Leather were made from Cape buffalo hide. Even after allowing for the boots, there was plenty left. Mr. Murray made 15 separate items for me from my Cape buffalo – a scoped rifle case, a saddle scabbard, and multiple knife sheaths, bullet wallets, buttstock shell holders, rifle slings and belts. He made an additional 10 items from the hide of my Alaska Yukon moose – another scoped rifle case and multiple knife sheaths, rifle slings and belts. All are necessary in the field, all are attractive and durable, and all allow me to relive hunts past while hunting present.

Perhaps my best example of how meaningful such items can be occurred in the Northwest Territories of Canada. It was our last night on the mountain. We were in camp, listening to the ptarmigan chuckle in the brush nearby, sharpening our knives and talking. I was exhausted, though my guide Bill seemed unfazed, as usual. We had spent eight days hunting, and it had been a wonderful, tough hunt, taking mountain goat on day six and moose that morning. We had deboned the moose and cached the meat for pick-up, then made our way back to camp.

Even though I was going to have a European skull mount for the moose, we had skinned him out. Bill knew I was taking the hide to Dick Murray, as he had admired and inquired about my Cape buffalo boots, belt, and knife sheath days earlier. We discussed what items I was going to have made from the hide, and I asked him if I could have something made for him. Bill hesitated, then said he would like a belt to remember the hunt. Then I asked to see Bill’s knife, slipped it into my Cape buffalo sheath and tossed it to him, saying that a knife that good deserved a sheath to match, and that it would look good on his moose belt. Bill, a taciturn Englishman, was visibly moved. It was a perfect ending to a great hunt. CT

Comments: Accompanied by wife, daughter and granddaughter who took her first animals. Would recommend: great hunting areas with lots of animals. We can’t say enough about the great hunt and what a wonderful experience we had. We saw many species and took some great trophies, including the 37-plus inch gemsbok that Bertus helped my 15-year-old granddaughter stalk and take. Bertus was very patient and helpful in helping her take her first game animals, and she was so excited! The hunt that Africa Awaits donated was top flight, and we do not hesitate to recommend them to any DSC members.

ally Maxwell, a popular and prolific artist and exhibitor at the DSC Expo, has been selected

as the Artist of the Year for Legacy 2018. Maxwell’s art is primarily on scratchboard which produces stunning works depicting the beauty of nature.

“The decision to choose Sally was an easy one. She and her husband have been with DSC for a long time, and her work has been on the ‘must-have’ list for many of our members,” said Craig Nyhus, DSC President.

Sally began exhibiting and working with Dallas Safari Club in 2004. She has donated many works of art to the Annual Convention auctions, and her work has been featured on the covers of DSC Publications over the years.

n 2016, DSC Foundation approved and funded a grant to Michel Mantheakis Safaris to assist his efforts to reduce and remove litter,

specifically plastic water bottles, from the Lake Natron Basin in Northern Tanzania.

“The Lake Natron Basin has been designated as a significant natural resource under the Ramsar Convention of 1971, commonly referred to as the International Wetlands Convention, and is one of two Ramsar Convention sites that DSC and DSC Foundation have supported with conservation grants over the past three years,” said DSC Foundation president Richard Cheatham.

Lake Natron’s water is non-potable because of its extreme levels of alkalinity. As a result, drinking water for those who visit or live in the Basin must be imported. Unfortunately, the water often comes in plastic containers that end up as litter in this unique environment.

Lake Natron serves as the only East African breeding ground for approximately 2.5 million Lesser Flamingos. It is a stunning, harsh and beautiful environment that is worthy of the protection afforded by the Ramsar Site designation.

Michel and his teams, with the help of a grant from DSC Foundation, have created and erected signage to discourage the improper disposal of trash in the Basin area. The teams also conduct routine clean-up patrols and look forward to confirmation that the signage is having the desired effect. CT

stop ramp-up to Legacy, let’s look back over the years and those brave souls who stepped up to lead the DSC 100 and put on the Greatest Hunters’ Convention on the Planet™.

Some years, there was a solo convention chair, and other years, people joined forces to muster the volunteer army, either with a spouse or a friend. There are not enough words to describe the job, or to thank these people for the work they have put into creating such a wonderful family atmosphere within DSC and at the Convention.

Due to an oversight, chairs from 1981-1997 were omitted from the 2017-18 Resource Guide. The theme of this year’s show is Legacy and make no mistake about this: DSC treasures the legacy that all of these volunteers have left and are leaving for future generations of hunters.

If you would like to volunteer at the show, please turn to the list of activities on the back page and make a note of the DSC 100 meetings. That is your starting point, one of many. We have volunteer jobs for almost any age and skill set. CT

Happy Hill Farm:Changing Children’s LivesDSC members can be a part of this important effort.

It is time once again to reach out to these wonderful children. Happy Hill Farm has requested that we provide gift cards because they are easier to handle and do not necessitate that the names and gifts be matched up, wrapped or checked for appropriateness. Gift cards are the most requested item on their wish lists. This format allows the school to treat the entire student body equally.

Donations can be cash or a check made out to DSC, or you may purchase gift cards from Wal-Mart or Target for $20 or $25. Please be sure to indicate the amount of the gift is somewhere on the card. The Happy Hill Farm angels of DSC will purchase more gift cards with the money we receive.

You may send or drop off your donations to the DSC office any time. We will also collect donations at the monthly meetings. We need to have all cards/cash in to DSC by Dec. 10, 2017. This year, we will have about 150 children between the ages of 5-18.

Ed and Gloria Shipman founded the boarding school on Happy Hill Farm to provide a safe, secure home for underprivileged boys and girls, and a superior education. Including the mix of local students from the surrounding areas and international students, 85 percent of students are on scholarship.

Without any local, state, or federal funding, the dedicated operations run thanks to caring donors. DSC members play a part each by giving donations for gift cards during the Christmas season. CT

DSC Heartland Brings In New Members, Wins Prize

Congratulations to DSC Heartland, the chapter with members from both Nebraska and Iowa, for winning the second

quarter membership drive drawing. By sponsoring 17 new members in the last quarter, DSC Heartland went above and beyond to support DSC by recruiting these new members. By sponsoring new members, they received that number of entries in the drawing, and the hard work paid off!

y breaking down survey responses and known costs, the research project determined the approximate contribution of trophy hunting to the South African Economy is $130 million each

year.The researchers sought to determine the profile and spending patterns of trophy hunters, economic

impact of trophy hunting, hunting patterns, and species broken down by most popular and highest income generators.

Trophy hunters in South Africa tended to be married men over 50 with a degree. Most came from the U.S., with other hunters coming from countries such as Canada, Denmark, Germany and Norway.

Only 5 percent of respondents traveled to South Africa to take the trip alone. On average, respondents came with two other people and stayed 10 to 12 days at the hunting destination in addition to another average three nights travelling around South Africa. The total average spending of a trophy hunter in South Africa is $9,790, not including airfare or game hunted. The average spent on game species was another $10,345.

As for individual game species, the top five hunted in 2015/2016 include impala, warthog, springbok, kudu and blesbok. The five that generated the most income were buffalo, lion, sable, kudu and nyala.

Hunters reported gathering information on their hunting outfitters from three places: trade shows, word of mouth and the internet.

The researchers conducted two surveys: one in 2013 with 147 respondents and one in 2015/2016 with 362 respondents. Because of factors such as safety, beautiful landscapes, abundance of game and good people, 79 percent said they will likely return to hunt in South Africa again. CT

.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke recently illustrated his commitment to preserving hunting heritage for generations to come.

• On August 9, he declared his pursuit of expanding access to hunting and fishing as one of his top priorities.

• On September 15, Zinke extended the order he made on his first day to further support hunting and fishing and improve wildlife management in public lands.

By increasing opportunities for families to enjoy public waters and lands, Zinke believes he is also maximizing the opportunity to pass down the legacy of hunting.

One part of the proposal increases access to hunting and fishing in nine National Wildlife Refuges in Georgia, South Carolina, Indiana, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon and Wisconsin.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt announced more than $48 million in federal funding to go to state wildlife agencies through the State Wildlife Grant Program. With this program, the funding will go to support species and their habitats as outlined in state wildlife action plans. The plans include projects involving everything from general research and monitoring to wildlife surveys and habitat management.

The Deputy Secretary also announced that more than $4 million of federal funds will go to Native American and Alaska Native tribes in 14 states to support fish and wildlife conservation and key partnerships through the Tribal Wildlife Grant (TWG) program.

For an example of projects in the TWG program, the Tesuque Pueblo will receive nearly $200,000 for its Mule Deer Management and Habitat Enhancement Program in New Mexico. CT

DSC is pleased to celebrate the experience and the joy of hunting by presenting awards to its members once a year. As judged by a panel of expert volunteers, prizes are awarded for the best trophies by region, size and species, with special categories for archery, youth and ladies.

To enter, contestants must provide the following:

• Completed Member Trophy Awards Form for each animal entered, available on the DSC website under “Awards” from the home page.

• A field photo, preferably digital, of you with your trophy

• $30 entry fee for each animal entered by Dec. 15; final deadline Dec. 29 (with late fee).

• A score sheet for each animal entered

• B&C scores are admissible for North American game

Field photos of you and your trophy will be displayed at the convention, and winners will be awarded at an upcoming monthly meeting and listed in a subsequent issue of Camp Talk.

New Solution to Save Caribou – Hunt More Moose

he woodland caribou population in southern British Columbia is declining, but scientists from the University

of British Columbia and the University of Alberta have discovered a way to stabilize the population: hunt more moose.

The increasing moose and white-tailed deer populations have contributed to the decline of caribou. All three of these species share a common predator. With the increase in available prey, the local wolf numbers have also increased. However, the caribou population has not been able to withstand the growing number of wolves as the other prey populations have.

Environmental scientists describe this situation as apparent competition. It describes cases in which a predator population increases with various prey population increases, but only one prey population begins to decline after the influx of predators.

Scientists conducted an experiment that revealed how

reducing the moose population allows the caribou population to stabilize. The predator population did not suffer either. The scientists observed that the wolves merely dispersed over a greater area.

While this is not a long-term, comprehensive solution, the scientists offer moose population control as one tool for future management. They also suggest habitat protection and occasional predator control.

To protect caribous in the past, over two million hectares of land in British Columbia already have designated logging restrictions and strict minimum distance requirements between caribou and recreation activities like snowmobiling. However, even with these actions, the projections still show that caribous are heading toward extinction. This is why scientists have been experimenting with more direct management tools for controlling predator-prey relationships. CT
