August President’s Letter

Dear Members,

Again, our July meeting was one not to be missed. Kathy French the Direc-tor of Community Relations for the Caddo-Bossier Parishes Port Commis-sion gave us an overview on activities at the port. She has invited us to tour the area as well, we informed her that we’d love to though we really wanted to wait for the weather to cool off a bit.

My time as your president is slowly coming to an end and as that time winds down a search is on to replace me, fill my shoes, or to take the helm. No matter how you describe it the door is open for someone to step up and vol-unteer to be our next club president. Dorothy Semon has again stepped up to chair this committee. Please give her a moment of your time as she searches for volunteers. I will do everything I can to assist the new president and am looking forward to being in the background again.

The month of August brings us to the end of summer, kids go back to school and we have a couple of activities to be involved with. The first will be the Ark-La-Tex Oilman’s Shootout, at Los Paloma Sporting Range on Friday, August 10th and Saturday, August 11th. An email with the times has been sent, if you have any questions or want to volunteer please contact Margie Steed. Our second event will be our Bunco Fundraiser and Silent Drawing to be held on Tuesday, August 21st at Kings Hwy Christian Church, 806 Kings Hwy – Family Life Center. We held this two years ago and every-one had so much fun. Margie Steed is also spearheading volunteers for this event and will be sending out an email to you soon with more information.

Our next membership meeting will be held August 28th. The speaker will be the Honorable Judge Frances Pittman and her topic will be Oil and Gas Law, I do hope you will make plans to attend.

See you soon,

Sheryl August, 2018

All Things Port

Kathy French

July, 2018 Program

Kathy French, Director of Community Relations for the Caddo-Bossier Parishes Port Commission, was our speaker

for our 7/24/2018 meeting…..and a very informative speaker at that. This lady stays too busy for me. But she is

super knowledgeable when it comes to The Port.

Located on the Red River Waterway just south of Shreveport-Bossier, The Port has access to barge, rail, motor

freight and air transport providing a network of distribution to nearly 30 million people in some of the strongest

markets – Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and New Orleans are all within a one-day reach by motor freight.

The Port’s infrastructure, logistics and transportation network take full advantage of its geography by offering rail

transportation, water and barge, air and motor freight transportation.

The Port of Caddo-Bossier is regarded as one of the fastest growing inland river ports in the United States. The

Port of Caddo-Bossier is located at the head of navigation on the Red River Waterway in Northwest Louisiana, ap-

proximately four miles south of the city limits of Shreveport at mile marker 211. I bet you didn’t know that it’s

better for the environment to ship by barge.

The Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi River and Red River provide an energy efficient, reliable and environmentally-

friendly transportation network. Cargoes handled at The Port include: liquid petroleum, aggregate, coiled steel,

plate steel, fertilizer, over dimensional cargo, scrap steel, steel beams, coal, tire chips and frac sand to the tune of

16 barges per month. One steel plate or slab weighs 26 tons and can be shipped one per semi-truck. A roll on-roll

off dock is also available.

Did you know The Port has special Zones? (1) Foreign Trade Zone offering cost-saving advantages. (2) U.S. Cus-

toms Port of Entry that allows goods to reach the dock without stopping to clear customs along the way.

Did you know that The Port has rail transportation? A comprehensive rail network by two Class 1 Rail lines pro-

vides service to the Caddo-Bossier community. The Port complex itself is serviced by the Union Pacific with local

access to the KCS available. The Port complex includes 22 miles of industrial grade track and rail on dock. Three

Port-owned and operated locomotives are available for immediate rail car switching. In addition, the Port offers

rail storage for its tenants. In addition, the Port offers more than 20,000 feet of rail storage for its tenants.

I strongly recommend that Red River D&D add The Port to its list of potential field trips!! The infor-

mation provided in this write-up is only a “drop in the bucket”…

Respectfully submitted,

Arlys Milan

A GOOD LEASE MAN

Must be a man of vision and ambition, and an after-dinner speaker, before and after dinner guzzler, night owl, work all day and half the night, then drive 200 miles and appear fresh the next day. You must be able to entertain bankers, farmers, cattlemen, company landmen, and pet widows without becoming too amorous. Inhale dust, drive through snow 10’ deep at 10 below, and work all summer without perspiring or acquiring BO. Must be a man’s man, a lady’s man, a model husband, a fatherly father, a good provider, a Plutocrat, a Democrat, a Republican or a New Dealer, an older dealer and a technical, politician, mathematician, me-chanic, carpenter, baby sitter and a notary public. Must be a buying genius, able to anticipate other company plays, a land scout and general information bureau. Must visit al-lents in hospitals, jails, honky-tonks and beer joints. Con-tact all buyers in immediate vicinity at all times and be pre-pared to leave for parts unknown, a distance of not less than 2000 miles, on five minutes notice. Must have unlim-ited endurance, a wide range of telephone numbers in all principle cities, an acquaintance beginning in Maine and ending in California. Must have a good car, an attractive home and belong to all club and pay all expenses at home. Must be an expert drive, talker, dancer, traveler, bridge players, poker player, diplomat, financier, capitalist, philan-thropist, geologist, lawyer, abstractor, good and fast with a typewriter, an authority or palmistry, chemistry, phycology, dogs, horses, brunettes, blondes and redheads.

Is it any wonder that good lease men are hard to find?
