What do you get when you cross a Grizzly Bear with a Teddy Bear? If you answered “Dee” Hawkes, you would be a winner.

Dee was a winner in about everything he attempted. His family moved from Wallace, Idaho to Seattle. At age six he attended F. H. Coe Elementary School and then Queen Anne High School. At Queen Anne, he was a three-sport athlete. During his Senior year (1953-54) he quarterbacked the football team to the Seattle City Championship. to work with kids again. We make lots of crafts and it’s allowed me to spend a lot more time outside playing and being goofy, what more could I ask for? During the year I was also able to dedicate a lot of time to growing my small business on Etsy through social media and expanding my products. I’ve made a lot of things I’m really excited about and it feels good to be creating so much! Please feel free to check out my work at www.etsy.com/shop/RoxiKoDesigns

Editor’s NotesRoxi Ko

Hi all! It’s been a tough year for everyone but I hope you have been staying safe and healthy throughout 2020. After

losing my job at the beginning of the pandemic, I got a job as a nanny for a family on Queen Anne with two adorable kids. That has been really fun and it’s been really nice to be able

Alumni Board meetings have become Zoom only, with a comical array of member responses or non-responses. The year’s stressful issues of elections and pandemic have, not surprisingly, led to a significant reduction in donations for our alumni programs.

Now that the vaccines are almost, but not quite to us, I find that I’m more anxious than before…will I make it to safety?

Nevertheless, with faith in our public health systems and the love and support of our fellow Grizzlies the QAHSAA will move boldly into the coming year. We wish you all peace and good health in 2021!

President’s MessageBy Sally Villaluz Ghormley ’79

Hello Grizzlies!

2020 has almost come to an end as I write this; it’s been a big blur. Is everyone ready for a new and improved 2021? Let’s all be healthy

and stay well. I hope and pray that we may all get together with family and friends. Hopefully we may mark our 2021 calendars with some QAHSAA activities!

I recommend that we each take one day at a time and make the most of it.

crash, he developed, along with others, what would become an organization to benefit Queen Anne grads, called the Men and Women of Queen Anne (MWQA). With this group he organized golf tournaments and found other ways to provide scholarships for children and grandchildren of QA Alumni.

Dee will be missed. His enthusiasm and great leadership, along with his motivational and organizational skills won him many awards; highlights include his induction in the Northshore School District Wall of Honor, the Gold Helmet Award from the Washington State Football Coaches Association, and two memorial coach awards from the National Football Foundation.

Who embodied the Grizzly Spirit more than Dwight “Dee” Hawkes … not many!

In 2021 he will finish and release the next volume, covering both baseball and basketball.

and church groups. He also made time to work as a lead lifeguard at Schlitterbahn Water Park He is the son of Marisa and Andrew Ybarra and the grandson of Jim Turner ’53. He is awarded a Queen Anne High School Alumni Scholarship donated by numerous Grizzlies.

Seattle is still under rules disallowing in person meetings and the student applicants from 2020 have had great difficulty in providing timely data from their schools. The result is that the scholarship awards for 2020 were not completed until January of 2021.

It is our plan to resume the program at the beginning of 2022. Remember that applicants can be college undergrads as well as high school seniors and others as outlined in the Policies on the website, www.qagrizzlies.org.

1950s The passing of Dee Hawkes ’54 is noted in a separate story. But his coaching career also included a stint at Queen Anne in 1967. He led the 1967 QAHS Sophomore basketball team to an undefeated championship season with 16-0 record. Craig Smith ’69, who was on that team, sends us this story and notes that although Dee was known as a successful football coach, he showed his excellent coaching skills with these young Grizzlies, proving a good coach can coach any sport to victory.

Dan Haw ’56, sent a donation and writes that, after success in real estate, he and wife Joyce now live in Wenatchee, a “low-key” life.

Stan Chapple ’57, died in Sequim, WA on November 13, 2020, of complications from multiple myeloma. Our sympathies to Patti (McIntosh) Chapple ’57, and family,

and to Doug Chapple ’57, his wife Emmary and family. It’s never easy to lose one’s beloved, but it hits us all when the deceased has been a model for the ensuing generations of alums. Stan was an integral part of the 1959 and 1960 UW footballs teams which won successive Rose Bowls over Wisconsin (44-8) and so-called national champion Minnesota (17-7) in the 1960 and 1961 Rose Bowls. He and twin Doug kept the Grizzlies with winning seasons in 1955 and 1956.

Marian Hailey-Moss ’58/59, has written another book. This one, “Max of San Francisco,” is inspired by former classmate Eric Charles “Chuck” Dege ’58, and tells tales of his work at the chic beauty salon at San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel. Chuck is now living in Palm Springs.

Nancy (Gould) Hilliard ’58 writes to her classmates: Although we had to cancel the in-person 2020 celebration due to Covid19,

“The Griz” still toasts us all and suggests looking up a few friends in the updated directory recently mailed to you. Our connections remain strong. Carry on!

Larry Cain ’59 celebrated his 80th birthday this year with his wife Teresa (Richardson) Cain ’61 and neighbors Kathy (Kirch) Holden Koval ’61 and Roy Koval ’59. They live in Crescent Bar on the Columbia River, near Quincy, and are sick of this virus (as are we all).

1960sMarv Wilson ’60, sends a note from Bellingham, WA, after ordering Grizzly gear. “My wife just rolls her eyes—Ballard High School has nowhere near the esprit de corps that Queen Anne has.”

More memories of Jack Sederholm ’56 and Richard Sederholm (a.k.a. Jess Richards) ’61, from R. B. Hood ’61: “Jack’s ‘little’ brother, Richard, was also a Coe guy and QAHS Class of ’61 alum; went on to UW, then New York. Died 1994 of AIDS. Steven Pihl’s ’58, little brother in the picture is Jim (James) Pihl ’61, another former Coe guy and QA ’61 alum. (See Coe School Orchestra photo in the July, 2020 KUAY.) Steve, Jim and I were neighbors when we all went to Coe. Jim and I are currently friends on Facebook.”

Carol “Jeannie” (Pound) Reiner ’62, asks us to revise her listing: She is (widowed) now living in Tucson, AZ. Her updated bio: Coe, QA, Seattle Pacific, and Cal. Poly, Pomona (advanced degrees). She works as a public school reading specialist, and runs a retro business, “Out of the Past” specializing in vintage clothing, both retail and rented. Has been a security assistant in medical store facilities and wrote the book, “Life on Your Terms,” dealing with holistic eating and exercise. She sends thanks to the board “for all the efforts to keep our high school experiences ongoing. Yeah Grizzlies!”

Michael P. (Pete) Lyons ’63 has published three books in the last year. When his wife entered into Alzheimer’s memory care two years ago he dealt with his grief by writing. The books include one of poetry

(“Living Poetry for Today”), one on growing up in the ’50’s and ’60s and his spiritual development (“GOD, Me, and You”), and one on money management (“Who Should Manage My Money? YOU!”). All are available on Amazon. Pete graduated from Seattle U in Business with a 2nd

Lt. Commission, served in Vietnam in the Army and currently lives in Olympia.

David Semple ’63, a retired health care executive, took his son (in 2019) to a UW 50th Reunion. He showed his youngest son, Chris, “to all the places I remember so well: QA Hill, UW, Pike Place Market”. Also took daughter, Lisa, who lives on Capitol Hill, to other local favorites. David and wife Joanne live in Minneapolis (got through 2020 riots OK). Sends “thanks to all QA friends who keep us informed. Best wishes to all.” Miriam (Lavik) Gill ’64, had a stroke Aug. 24 and is recuperating at a skilled nursing facility in Bellevue. Friends and classmates wishing updates should contact Kathy (Gimness) White ’64 ([email protected]). Also, Patrick Gill ’65, Miriam’s husband, has been keeping family and friends up-to-date on her condition.

Marylen (Smith) Bartlett ’65, sends a letter with a donation. She and her husband retired and are now living in Blue Jay, CA. Moved there from Maryland. They live near Lake Arrowhead and have four seasons to enjoy. She hopes everyone is staying safe and healthy during this Covid epidemic, wishing everyone a safe and healthy year.

Sonia (Hatfield) Tress ’69, wrote to us asking if any of her fellow band members (1966-69) would be interested in a reunion. Sonia now lives in Lynnwood, WA and may be reached at [email protected].

1970sBonnie (Henry) Bowie ’73, Ph.D., etc., was recently selected for Fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing for her lifelong contributions to

nursing and population health. She is Professor and Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in Nursing at Seattle University, College of Nursing, where she has worked since 2000. She writes: “I have loved every minute of my nursing career, and I wish I had another lifetime to pursue other areas of nursing. I am particularly proud to be a nurse during the pandemic, when nurses are risking their lives on a daily basis to provide the best care possible to their patients.”

Debora Spencer ’78, was one of the artists featured in the Seattle Times Pacific Northwest Magazine, July 19, 2020. She has been doing murals on plywood panels over windows and doors of the various businesses in the Denny Regrade/Belltown area shuttered by Covid concerns and social unrest. She has captured sequences from “Alice in Wonderland” to use. Debora has recently returned to Seattle from New York City.

Jill (Morrison) McKinstry ’65 Named UW iSchool 2020 Distinguished AlumnaBy Claudia (Kettles) Lovgren ’65

I have the privilege of relaying Jill (Morrison) McKinstry’s ’65 (UW ’87) accomplishment of this award for her dynamic direction in leading the

renovation of the UW’s Odegaard Undergraduate Library in half the time normally required and coming under budget (!), with rave reviews.

Jill is the retired director of Odegaard and special assistant to the dean of UW libraries.

GRIZZLY ANGELS Our Association is funded primarily by donations, plus sales of merchandise and raffles. We are unique among alumni groups in not having paid memberships. Your tax deductible gifts are greatly appreciated and needed not just to provide scholarships, but also to cover the KUAY, logo merchandise purchases and miscellaneous expenses. All our efforts are by unpaid volunteers. In these difficult times we hope you can find a way to help the QAHSAA continue its mission.

Stayed tuned for more to come in the future. You don’t have to be a Facebook member to browse this site. I recommend for everybody to look-see some great photos and comments. Who knows, your picture might be in there.

Latest post/chat:What was that room?OK, when you entered QA through the front doors and up the stairs there was a very large room directly across from where we entered. Depending on when you attended was it the study hall or was it the library? It was 2 stories high.

This revolutionary facility has bright day lit open space and first active –learning classroom whiteboards (no dark slate board!) throughout. I have seen their video and would love to experience this stunning space. The students are so focused that I don’t think they would notice a Boomer. It expresses Jill’s true advocacy for the student.

“She became very much a voice of the student experience, and actually started using words that we now use all of the time – student success, holistic approach”, stated vice provost and dean of UW libraries and colleague Betsy Wilson.

I am jealous of this library. I am sure I would have gotten better grades had we had a library like this. Right! I went to our library at QA for the view and to escape the dreary Study Hall.

I would like to add my own personal Jill trait – gracious. I am sure that this was a major part in deserving this award. I also nominate Jill to any public project to bring it under budget.

Cup of Coffee CheerBy Claudia (Kettles) Lovgren ’65

Mike Condon ’75 owned Mike’s Community Cup on Military Road S. in SeaTac for eleven years, selling in 2019.

With donation drives Mike’s shop donated on average school supplies of 15,000 to 20,000 items yearly for children in need and helped replace a weight room floor at a local high school. They also sent a high school band to play at President Obama’s second inauguration along with a DECA team to Orlando for a world tournament.

At Christmas, Mike would donate an item or two from his sports collection as a prize to help collect over 25,000 toys and games for Children’s Hospital.

Mike’s customers were often helped with their own projects.

In 2014 Mike’s Community Cup was named National Small Business of the year, surpassing 400 other businesses. Along with that honor, they were chosen as the neighborhood’s top coffee shop and one of the top twenty shops in western Washington.

Though Mike, now retired, misses the connection, he is still in coffee but now running a local university’s satellite coffee program.

I am sure many are grateful for being served more than a cup of coffee.
