Volume 40 Term 3 Issue 12 Wednesday 13th August 2014
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students, Staff and Friends of the College,
Feast of the Assumption
In Marist schools the Feast of the Assumption is a very significant event as it honours Mary's special
role in our faith story and Church.
“Mary's was a journey of faith, just like ours. Though schooled in the tradition of her people, she was
nevertheless astounded by the extraordinary intervention of God in her life. Though 'chosen from all
women', she knew the hardship of giving birth in an inhospitable place, far from home, and the life of
a refugee. There was dust on her feet.” (In The Footsteps of Marcellin Champagnat - In the Way of
Mary)
As we take the time and space to honour Mary we remember our Marist Motto:
All to Jesus through Mary; all to Mary for Jesus.
Marist Association of St Marcellin Champagnat
Earlier this week the staff of the College received a letter of invitation from our Provincial, Brother Jeff
Crowe. The invitation is to consider expressing an interest in joining the Marist Association of St
Marcellin Champagnat. This invitation is extended to the broader Sacred Heart community given that
many members of the Sacred Heart family have had extensive involvements with the Marist Brothers
and the College over many years. If you would like further information please refer to this website -
http://tinyurl.com/maristassociationinvitation or contact the College and we will get back in touch.
Br Jeff describes the group as having a common purpose and a wide spectrum of motivation. The
Association brings together those who are moved to answer the question, “What is the Spirit asking of
us Marists in today's Church and society in Australia?” So, if you would like a copy of the invitation
please do not hesitate to get in touch!
With best wishes,
Steve Byrne Principal

Scripture Reflection Friday, 15 Aug 2014: The Assumption of the Blessed
Virgin Mary
Mary set out and went as quickly as she could to a town in
the hill country of Judah. She went into Zechariah’s house and
greeted Elizabeth. Now as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,
the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy
Spirit. She gave a loud cry and said, “Of all women you are the
most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I
be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the
moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb
leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise
made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.”
And Mary said:
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord
and my spirit exults in God my saviour;
because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid.
Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me
blessed,
for the Almighty has done great things for me.
Holy is his name,
and his mercy reaches from age to age for those who fear
him.
He has shown the power of his arm,
he has routed the proud of heart.
He has pulled down princes from their thrones and exalted
the lowly.
The hungry he has filled with good things, the rich sent
empty away.
He has come to the help of Israel his servant, mindful of his
mercy
– according to the promise he made to our ancestors –
of his mercy to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.”
Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then
went back home.

In the Western church this feast celebrates the assumption of Mary into heaven; in the East it
commemorates her dormition or her falling asleep. The readings invite us to reflect on the role that she
plays in the mystery of our redemption. Whatever we honour in Mary in some way points to her son.
Over the centuries devotion to Mary has been expressed in forms taken from the culture out of which it
developed. Sometimes she is pictured as a humble peasant girl. At other times she is depicted as a
queen robed in gold of Ophir who rules from heaven. Probably the most familiar pose is that of a
mother with her child. Perhaps the most dramatic of these themes is that of the celestial woman from
the vision found in the Book of Revelation. It is because of the cosmic significance of Jesus that this
tradition has been applied to Mary.
Though the first reading depicts a cosmic woman, the gospel reading characterises Mary as a simple
peasant woman intent on offering service to another. However, the words that are placed in her mouth
are words of prophetic challenge. She announces the great reversals of God’s good news. The greatness
of Mary is a reflection of the greatness of the Son of God whom she bore. He was the first fruits of
salvation. He was the victor who won the kingdom. Her part in this victory was to bring him to birth
and into maturity.
With thanks to Dianne Bergant © for the above reflection.

Franklin House Mass On the 6th August Franklin House celebrated their annual House Mass focused around the theme
‘People of Action’. Taking inspiration from Sr Trish Franklin’s recent visit and guest speaker Deng
Chuor who as a refugee has returned back to Southern Sudan to set up educational programs. Students
had time to reflect as a group on contributions that they can make to one another and the wider world.
Br Jordan Redden was also in attendance as Fr Rob Eagar celebrated the mass where all students
participated prayerfully and reverently.

Winter Sleepout Twenty-five students and two teachers spent a very cold winter’s night in the Sacred Heart College
Grandstand on Friday 1 August to gain an understanding of what life is like for the homeless around
Adelaide. Students were only entitled to use blankets donated by the community to keep warm – and
we were lucky to have such generous donations forthcoming! Thanks go to Tracy Smith for braving the

cold to sleep out with the students and Rosemary Moten for help with organisation and for conducting
a very informative session on global poverty. Thanks also to Allied Pickfords for donating some cartons
– students were very grateful to have a box to sleep in on the night!

Walk A Mile In My Boots The annual Walk A Mile In My Boots was held on 8 August. We had a fantastic group of students who
met bright and early (6:45am!) in the city and then walked the length of Hutt Street with about 3000
other people, to replicate walking the streets in the cold that Adelaide’s homeless experience each night.
The students and teachers (Steve Byrne, Mick Boers, Steph Veness, Annicka Adolphi, Tracy Smith and
myself) donated money to go on the walk, and the funds raised goes to the Hutt Street Centre for the
homeless.
Students and teachers enjoyed a traditional Hutt St Centre barbeque breakfast in the South Parklands
along with the estimated 4000 other people who went on the walk.

We thank the students who participated – not just those pictured – as well as the parents who got them
to the city so early. Also, thank you to Mrs Annicka Adolphi and Mr Steve Byrne who joined myself
and the students.

eLEARNING UPDATE #10 This edition of our eLearning Update contains a list of some of the more common advanced searching tools which can be used to help you find what you need in Google faster. Accessing the advanced search option
Method one: type in your initial search query and then click on the gear icon in the top right hand corner of the page and select “Advanced Search” from the drop down menu
Method two: go straight to the Advanced Search page by using the following link: http://www.google.com/advanced_search
The top of the Advanced Search screen will allow the user to filter their search by finding pages with ….all of these words ….this exact word or phrase ….any of these words ….none of these words ….numbers ranging from
Exact searching by simply using the search box
To search for an exact phrase, simple put quotation marks around the phrase in the search box
Use a hyphen to exclude words e.g. ‘mustang –horse’ will remove all pages related to the mustang horse but will still call up pages relating to the mustang car
Site searching can be used to limit your search to a particular website or domain. This can be achieved by typing in the following: site:domain or site:website
e.g. site:edu “Australian history”…….this search will only bring up pages that are from educational institutions related to Australian history
e.g. site:Stanford.edu “coral bleaching” …. this search will look for pages from Stanford University related to coral bleaching
Site searching by country This enables you to limit the pages searched for to a particular country only.
For example to only search for Australian educational content you would type in the following query
site:.edu.au “coral bleaching” ……would result in search pages related to coral bleaching from Australian education websites only
For a list of all the country codes click on the following link: http://bit.ly/1nbhyBV

SACE News
SACE Results and Students Online
Last week, all students who completed at least one 10-credit SACE subject in semester 1 at
Sacred Heart received a Record of Achievement from the SACE Board.
Students must ensure that they check the accuracy of their Record of Achievement and should
see me if they believe there is an error.
All students can access their SACE results online via the SACE Board's Students Online page.
The link is https://www.sace.sa.edu.au/students-online
The SACE registration number consists of six numbers and a check letter (e.g. 123456A)
and is printed on the Record of Achievement
The Personal Identification Number (PIN) is set to a default value based on the student's
date of birth i.e. DD/MM. e.g. If a student was born on June 4 their default PIN would be
0406. Students will be prompted to change their PIN to a different 4-digit number after
logging in.
Students who have forgotten their PIN can arrange for it to be reset by the SACE Board by
completing the form accessible by clicking on the link "request a PIN reset" under the login box.
This is also the site that Stage 2 students can go to at the end of the year to check their results -
beat the postie!
Students doing Year 12 (Stage 2) subjects (which includes most Year 11s who do Stage 2
Religion Studies) should check that their address is correct on the SACE Board website.
If you have moved any time over the past 3 years, it is possible that the SACE Board does not
have the updated address. Whatever address is on Students Online is the address Stage 2
results will be posted to in December. Please email me with the new address if it needs
updating.
Students have also been emailed all of the information above.
Subject Selection for 2015
Current Year 10 and 11 students are in the process of selecting subjects for 2015. Students
should return their completed and signed subject selection forms and WebChoice printout to
Homeroom teachers by Thursday, August 21.
10 | P a g e
A subject selection information session was held on July 29 for Year 11 students and Year 10
students had their information session on July 30. All students have received a folder of
materials and have been emailed a link to the presentation (in addition to instructions for using
WebChoice - online subject selection).
The information evening for parents/caregivers of current Year 10 students was also held on
July 30. The presentation has been emailed home and is also accessible from the
College webpage under the "Curriculum" menu (select "Subject Selection" from this menu).
There are also links here for forms, WebChoice instructions and the Curriculum Handbook.
PARENTS/CAREGIVERS OF YEAR 11 STUDENTS - INFORMATION EVENING
As advertised in previous newsletters, parents/caregivers of Year 11 students are invited to
attend a SACE/Higher Education Information Evening tonight, Wednesday, August 13 at 7.30
pm in the Debourg Performing Arts Centre. We will look at issues concerning subject selection
for Stage 2 (Year 12) in 2015, particularly for students considering further study, e.g. University
Entrance requirements, TAFE options etc. This information session is an important part of
supporting you and your daughter's/son's choice of subjects.
As mentioned above, all Year 11 students have received a subject selection folder to assist them
with the subject selection process. It is suggested that you read through this information and
bring it with you to the Information Session.
It is anticipated the information session will last for about an hour. We look forward to your
attendance.

Expressions of Interest: SACE Board Exam Invigilators – Paid Positions Expressions of interest are sought from members of the College community to supervise Stage 2
(Year 12) SACE Board examinations in November this year. There are a number of SACE Board
rules regarding the supervision of students and overseeing special provisions students for
exams. For this reason, it is most helpful to have a small team of supervisors who can ensure
that all rules are consistently adhered to.
The SACE Board examination period commences on Monday November 3 and concludes on
Wednesday November 19. Exams are 2 or 3 hours in length, plus additional time for special
provisions students if applicable. There are one or two exams each day during this period,
except for November 18 – no exams are scheduled for Sacred Heart students on this day.
The SACE Board stipulates that teachers are not permitted to supervise exams for subjects that
they teach. In keeping with this principle, it would be appropriate for applicants not to
supervise exams that relatives and/or close family friends are sitting.
For further information about the duties of invigilators, see the attached link:
https://www.sace.sa.edu.au/documents/652891/8055ab97-74f4-4e2c-89f7-fa5d5f2e7ed8?v=1
Should you be interested in applying, application forms are available from the College Human
Resources Coordinator, Malinda Pollok - email [email protected].
Applications close on Friday September 5, 2014.

Sr Trish Franklin’s Visit to Sacred Heart College
On Tuesday 29 July Franklin House welcomed Sister Trish Franklin on her visit to Sacred Heart College.
The Year 10 and 11 Franklin House students were provided with an insight into Sister Trish’s foundation the
Loreto Vietnam Australia Program. Sister Trish has been based in Vietnam for the past 17 years and has instigated
programs that provide educational opportunities for the disadvantaged in Ho Chi Minh City and now also in
impoverished rural areas. Joining her were two Team members Tam, Program Manager and Steph,
Communications Manager who presented their stories on their roles.
Representatives from all five Homerooms presented our 2014 fundraising donations which totalled over $1500.
Students and Staff were delighted to meet the Franklin House patron and were inspired by her enthusiasm and
humility.
A selection of photographs of this special event are included below.

SAPOL’s Road Safety – The Fatal Five SAPOL’s Road Safety Section recently attended your school and delivered a
road safety presentation to year 11 students entitled “The Fatal Five”,
presented by a currently serving police officer. This powerful and interactive
program discussed road safety issues, including the causes of road crashes
such as fatigue, alcohol and drugs, speed, risk-taking, peer pressure, driver
attitudes, and ways in which to reduce the risk of becoming a crash statistic.
This program incorporates using contemporary government road safety
messaging through partnership with the Motor Accident Commission (MAC).
The Road Safety Section also provides a free bi-monthly e-newsletter ‘Talkin

AN OPEN INVITATION:
Since early 2013 the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has been investigating how institutions like schools, churches, sports clubs and government organisations have responded to allegations and instances of child sexual abuse. The Catholic Church has been involved in a number of public hearings and clearly this issue is one of the most significant challenges facing the Church in Australia at a local, national and international level. The Australian Catholic Bishops have established the Truth Justice and Healing Council to co-ordinate the Church’s response to the Royal Commission. As a Parish Council, one of our main goals is to provide our parishioners with pastoral support. We believe that the Royal Commission hearings have raised issues and information which requires reflection, deep thought, open discussion and transparent information sharing. With this in mind, the Brighton Catholic Parish Council, with the full support and encouragement of Monsignor Ian, would like to invite you to an information night to hear about the Royal Commission and the Church’s response on a local and national level. The evening will include:
Presentations from the Chief Executive Officer of the Truth Justice and Healing Council Mr Francis Sullivan, Adelaide Archdiocese senior personnel and parish representatives as well as a panel discussion
An opportunity for parishioners to ask questions of the panel Time to reflect on and discuss the current situation facing us as a Church
WHEN: Wednesday August 20th 2014 at 7.00 – 8.30pm WHERE: Parish Hall / Activity Centre – 24 Strathmore Tce, Brighton All people are welcome to attend. If you require child minding services, transportation support, or if you have any queries, please contact the parish office on 8296 7292. We encourage you to consider attending this important parish gathering. Regards and God’s Blessings James Quigley Chairperson The Brighton Pastoral Parish Council July 2014
