FISHERMAN’S NET Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church • Lakewood, Ohio
Volume 48, Number 07 • March 2015
March – A Month of Faithfulness
In our liturgical calendar, March
is almost always fully consumed
by the season of Lent. Only
occasionally does Easter happen
late in March, and even less
frequently does Easter come late
enough that the first few days of
March are in the Epiphany
season. March is usually
entirely Lent.
There is a certain
meteorological good sense to
this. Our weather, stuck in a
kind of gray zone between
winter and spring, I think, helps
us to be meditative and
introspective. But tucked into
March, and rarely observed by
most of us, are two of the most
important “feasts” of the
Christian calendar.
On March 19, the Church
remembers St. Joseph, the
spouse of Mary and the adoptive
father of Jesus. We know little
of this man. Only the gospellors
Luke and Matthew give us tiny
glimpses of him. He disappears
early from the narrative, and his
primary contribution to the story
was to provide Jesus with a
patrilineal link to the royal line
of King David. But the gospel accounts make very
clear that this was a costly thing for Joseph.
Without him, and without his faithful willingness to
embrace and protect Jesus and Mary, the entire
story comes unglued.
On March 25, the Church celebrates one of the
major Christological feasts, the Feast of the
Annunciation. It has long been thought that the
early Christians fastened upon December 25th
as Jesus’ birthday, then
counted back nine months to
arrive at March 25th as the
date of the Annunciation to
Mary. Liturgical scholars
have conclusively
demonstrated that we have it
backwards. The date of the
Annunciation was fixed first,
then they counted forward
nine months to arrive at
Christmas. In a sense, the
early Christians believed that
the day of Mary's “yes” was
more important even than the
day of Jesus' physical birth.
Both of these feasts,
coming as they always do in
the midst of Lent, remind us
of the importance and power
of our faithful responses to
God. Every time you and I
consciously acquiesce to
what we believe is the call of
God, we reenact in our own
lives the faithfulness of
Joseph and Mary. Our “yes”
to God's summons is every
bit as consequential, every
bit as full of divine potential,
as were the responses of
Mary and Joseph.
I pray your Lent is
unfolding in ways that remind you of, and
strengthen you in, your faithful response to the God
who first loved you. My we all, like Mary and
Joseph, renew our “yes” to God and grow this
month, and all months, in the faithfulness that
renews the face of the earth.
Your Colleague in Christ,
— Keith

Mission Trip Fundraiser: Dewey’s Pizza – What a Success!
Thank you to everyone
that supported our
Dewey’s Pizza
Fundraiser. We sold 45
pizzas and raised just
under $500 for our
summer mission trip to
Appalachia. Special
thanks to our Parish
Accountant for pulling
all the orders together
into an easy to
understand spreadsheet and taking care of all the
funds that came in.
March Outreach Focus of the Month:
Cleveland Sight Center
The Cleveland Sight Center (CSC), located on the
edge of University Circle and near the Cleveland
Clinic, provides services for all northeast Ohio
residents of any age who are blind or visually
impaired. Cleveland Sight Center is a non-profit
organization. For fiscal year 2013 (the most current
available on their website), 45% of revenue came
from investment income, 37% from program
service fees, and 18% public support. They are
governed by a Board of Trustees, have
approximately 100 full and part-time employees,
and over 200 volunteers.
The Cleveland Sight Center offers a broad array
of services to maximize the independence and
quality of life of its clients. Programs include:
Birth – 3 years old: Early Intervention. On-site
parent-child groups with an EI specialist,
occupational therapist, physical therapist,
speech therapist, orientation & mobility
specialist, social worker; home visits;
services are often coordinated with
HelpMeGrow.
Bright Futures Preschool 3-5 years old: integrated
preschool for 16 students with the same
staffing as the Early Intervention program.
School-aged children: Serves a supportive role.
CSC hosts an August conference for
teachers, provide IEP support, low vision
assessment, assistive technology
Teens and young adults: on-site daily living skills
training (clean, cook, laundry, banking,
exploring new neighborhoods), career
exploration, social skills, IEP support
Adults: employment training and services with no
time limits, on the job support, low vision
evaluations, adaptive aids and technology,
recreation and socialization, supported
employment at the CSC, Call Center
~ continued on next page
employment site, low vision clinic, self-help
groups, recreation activities (golf, sailing,
book clubs, hiking, tai chi)
Seniors: home assessments, maximizing remaining
vision, support groups, Orientation &
Mobility services
Highbrook Lodge – A summer camp for blind or
visually impaired people and their families
in Chardon
Summer Camps at CSC for preschoolers through
high schoolers. High schoolers live in
apartments at Cleveland Sight Center.
Eyedea Shop – An on-site store for low vision
adaptive devices. Large print items,
household items with enlarged numbers or
letters (e.g. digital clocks, calendars),
magnifiers, cooking items, slant boards,
scanning and reading devices, talking clocks
and timers and more.
Patti Geiger has a unique connection to the
Cleveland Sight Center. She is a member of the
Delta Gamma (DG) Sorority. “Service for Sight”
has been The Delta Gamma’s philanthropic mission
since 1936. Patti first encountered the Cleveland
Sight Center as a DG alum. The DG alumni chapter
activities are based on the Sight Center in all
volunteer activities. When a Delta Gamma chapter
re-formed at Case Western Reserve University in
2003 (after a 120 year lapse), The Cleveland Sight
Center became the focus of much of their efforts.
Currently the Delta Gamma chapter at Case
Western Reserve University has “adopted” the
Bright Futures preschool as a focus of their
outreach.
The Geiger’s experience and involvement with
the Cleveland Sight Center did not end with Patti’s
DG alumni activities, when Chas’s mother
developed macular degeneration a year or so before
her death, the CSC helped provide lighted
magnifying devices to allow her to continue to read.
As a widow of more than 20 years, she was very
proud of her independence. The Sight Center also
provided her with support and encouragement,
giving her confidence that she could continue an
independent life with limited sight.
Please consider this unique resource we have in
the greater Cleveland area and give generously.
Thank-you!
Easter Brunch
Easter Brunch is
Saturday, April 4th
from 10:00 a.m. to
noon. The event
will feature:
Passport thru Holy
Week for our
Families.
There is no cost
for this event. We
will begin with a
potluck brunch.
Please bring a
brunch item to share. Families will have the
opportunity to complete a Holy Week Passport and
travel through this special week in less than an hour.
So many times we go straight from Palm Sunday
to Easter morning and totally miss what happened
in between. We have a lot of young families that
may miss the key stories of our faith on the nights
when these stories take place and have the most
power. So we’re going to be travelers in time and
go back real quick to experience the week together.
All are welcome.
Easter Egg Hunt
Please join us on Easter
Sunday, April 5th
at 9:00
a.m. for a simple service
oriented towards families
with young children.
Following the service
will be an Easter Egg
Hunt. This will be our
third year hosting a hunt.
The first year it had to be
held in the undercroft due to weather conditions and
last year we were able to have it outside--fingers
crossed we'll be outside again this year. We are
looking for sponsorship of the items needed to stuff
the eggs. I will be sending emails to our families
with specific items that need sponsored. I will be
placing an order with Oriental Trading for things
like, small toys, stickers, tattoos, etc.... We are
really trying to avoid food/candy items. Our Youth
Group will be stuffing all of the eggs a week before.
If you have any questions or concerns, please
contact Michelle.

Last of the Greatest Generation
I am not sure who exactly
made the observation but
whether it was Tom Brokow
or some other there seems to be a consensus that
those born during or just after WWI and who served
our country during WWII were “The Greatest
Generation.”
My parents are gone, as are their parents and
their brothers, and now the last, my mother’s sister.
All served with distinction. Most of the black and
white photos show all the men in uniform while the
women are in civilian clothes, or mufti as my father
would say.
My mother’s sister, Mary, was the last of that
generation in the family. She died this February
2015 in hospice care. She wanted, with her family,
to contribute to the war effort. Her desire to be a
“Rosie the Riveter” or in the Navy were not what
her father, a Navy Captain, thought appropriate for
a lady. Finally she heard about the creation of
WASPs, better known as the Women Air-force
Service Pilots program. She got her father’s
permission and took flying lessons in a cow field in
Manassas, Virginia.
She earned the coveted pilot’s license. Every day
Mary made her way to office of Lt. Col. Jacqueline
Cochran, head of the WASPs, in Washington D.C.
until they finally told her to pack her bags and pay
for the transportation, and report to Sweetwater,
Texas for training. She joined the class of 1944 - 45.
(On December 7, 1943 she graduated 72nd
of 132 in
her class.)
The WASP flew planes from coast to coast; they
were test pilots; and delivery agents who delivered
planes from the factory to the coasts. They also
pulled targets for the male pilot’s gunnery practice.
The WASPs were disbanded in December 1945.
It was not until March 2010 that the women
pilots were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
She and her sisters were pioneers in women’s
aviation, and instrumental in the war effort that
made them a part of The Greatest Generation.
Her message even today is a challenge, “Come
on folks; let’s show the world that little girls really
can fly!" And fly they did and do today even in
outer space.
Anyone interested in women’s aviation history
needs to visit WASP on the Web or the Women’s
Aviation Museum here in Cleveland, a part of the
Burke Airport near the Rock 'n Roll Museum.

Friday Lent Flicks continue
Join Keith in the upstairs
lounge on the Fridays in
Lent as he offers his
favorite “spiritual” movies
along with a simple supper
(maybe meatless,
sometimes fish).
We’ll meet at 6:30
and immediately
start the movie.
An hour in, we’ll
pause and serve
supper, then dive
right back into the film. Afterwards, we’ll stay a
little while for a warm beverage and some
conversation.
Here are the dates and films for the Fridays in
March:
March 6 Into Great Silence
March 13 The Missionary (Rated 'R'),
not to be confused with “The Mission!”
March 20 Of Gods and Men
March 27 The Miracle Maker
(great movie to bring kids)
Altar Flowers
St. Peter’s has several
Sundays throughout the year
available for you to place
flowers at the altar. If you
would like flowers to

loved ones, you may do so by

$50. Call or stop by the office to see if your date is
available. (Flowers are not on the altar during the
Lenten Season.) The people of St. Peter’s thank
you for your thoughtfulness and generosity.

Coffee Hour
Below are our host families for March &
April. Just to remind us all how this
works: Six households will be assigned
each Sunday. No one will have to do
this more than a couple times each year.
We ask that you plan to bring
along with you on Sunday a plate
of something to put out for coffee
hour. Baking is no required, but is
always welcomed! The items you bring can be as
simple as a bag of goldfish crackers, baby carrots
and dip, grapes, crackers & cheese, you name it.
Just bring enough to share with maybe two dozen
people, and please make sure it’s ready to
service(i.e., on a platter, sliced, whatever). All you
have to do is leave the item in the kitchen before
church.
The verger will take care of putting things out and
cleaning up (though you are always welcome to
help!) Tom Newman will help out by getting the
coffee & lemonade started. THANK YOU Tom!
If you cannot cover your assigned Sunday, it
would be most helpful if you call someone and
switch Sundays. You many opt entirely out of the
rotation simply by contacting Amanda Chambers
440-891-1508 or [email protected]
With much gratitude, Amanda Chambers

In addition, overviews, scripture backgrounds,
reflections and prayer starters are included to boost
your understanding for and reflect upon each
week’s readings...a way to really bring the Word to
life!
You can view the readings and information on
the Scriptures by visiting St. Peter’s website
(www.stpeterslakewood.org) and clicking on the
scripture icon, labeled “Preparing for Sunday,”
located on the home page. We trust this will provide
valuable enrichment to your spiritual life.
