THE LEGION

“THE VETERAN - HE IS THE POW WHO WENT AWAY ONE PERSON AND CAME AWAY ANOTHER– OR DIDN'T

Here’s trusting your holidays were joyful. With

family, friends, food, gifts and a surprise or two. There were lots of pleasantries during the past year

and 2018 maybe great for each of us. The very best to all.

The Post has been busy and a few items are noted on these pages. The hall continues to look good

(Christmas décor is always cheerful and inspirational). The calendar is full as usual (the Post is a

business) handled the very best we can. A critical issue here, would you believe there are only three

or four (3 or 4) volunteers, non paid who are accomplishing about 98% of the work??

Long ago we established a policy that members managed Post 13 and there were to be no paid or sal-

aried employees. These volunteers assumed full responsibilities for total management of the Post.

We have 734 members on our roles, and the membership continues to increase.

I truly hope this piece will not be taken as a criticism to anyone, just hoping we will see more capable

hands coming forth.

A pleasant NEW YEAR to EVERYONE!

RAY STALLINGS ANNUAL CHILI COOKOFF

JANUARY 25TH 7PM (SOCIAL)

Its chili time once again — Once a year we really emphasize chili in honor of our past com-

mander Ray Stallings. Ray was one of our movers and shakers and we want to continue to

honor him through fellowship and continuing this exciting tradition that Ray started!

Members are asked to prepare their own special pot to the event. Each entry is judged by a

special panel of experts, and the winner will be presented with the Roving Trophy. Last years

winner is Nicki Miller and she plans to be back—and alert notice. The real winners are those

of us that socialize with friends until the cooks labor of love is served up.

We have been treated to many (10-12) pots of delicious chili over the years. From spicy to

sweet and some in between, so there is always a pot to your liking. We will also have salads,

and deserts, as well as many drink choices. No care for chili??? Other dishes will be available.

We look forward to seeing you there!!

HONOR FLIGHT 5TH ANNUAL REUNION

Honor Flight Tallahassee held its 5th Annual Reunion at the National Guard Armory in Tallahassee Fl. Thursday, 7

December. We had over 225 Veterans, Guardians, and Families & Friends who attended. Mission Bar-B-Q furnished

the delicious dinner.

Mac Kemp Chairman of Honor Flight was first to speak on the many Veterans and Guardians who have gone with on

the previous five (5) trips to Washington D.C. He spoke of each trip and what it meant to those Veterans and Guardi-

ans that belong to the Honor Flight Family. Chairman Kemp received a standing ovation when he completed his

presentation. Leon County Commission Chairman, Nick Maddox, spoke how proud the Leon County is to support Hon-

or Flight Tallahassee of its fifth year anniversary and how glad the County Commission sponsored this reunion. Com-

missioner Maddox presented the Leon County Proclamation recognizing Honor Flight Tallahassee to Mac Kemp and

Tom Napier. Craig Deatherage of Congressman Neal Dunn Office spoke on how proud the Congressman Neal Dunn is

proud of Honor Flight Tallahassee. Major Jonathan Kilpatrick, Chief information Officer of the City of Tallahassee

gave the importance of reorganization our Veterans and how important all Veterans are. Several Post 13 members

have been privileged to the event, an honor appreciated like no other.

The Guest speaker was, Former Florida State University Football Coach Bobby Bowden. When Coach Bobby Bowden

was introduced, he received a standing ovation when he arrived at the podium. Coach Bowden spoke of team work of

all of our lives. How team work worked for all of his players and how this 5th annual Reunion was important to all Vet-

erans & Guardians. At the closing of Honor Flight Reunion, Mac Kemp advised all attendees that our next trip

to Washington D.C. for WW11, Korean & Vietnam Veterans will be Saturday 19 May, 2018. He reminded

FLORIDA VETERANS HALL OF FAME

RECOGNIZING OUR VETERANS

The Florida Veterans Hall of Fame was established to recognize and honor

Veterans throughout the State who are nominated and an extensive application is prepared and submitted timely to

the committee. Accomplishments, and performance over and above are considered and scored by the committee. The

top scored applicants are selected and later named for the award. The above is an abbreviated sketch of the selection

process. Five members of this post have been inducted in this notable process. Beginning in 2014, John Haynes (class

of 2014), Charles LeCroy (class of 2015), Washington Sanchez (class of 2016), Dale Doss (class of 2017), John Folsom

(class of 2017).

SAULS-BRIDGES AMERICAN LEGION POST 13 NEWS

SOVEREIGNTY IS AMERICA'S HEARTBEAT

You have heard that America is a nation with sovereign

rights. And without those rights

we would be at the mercy of oppressors, tyrants and Amer-

ica haters.

So just what are a nation's sovereign rights? Why do enemies of freedom

attempt to strip nations of this priceless entity? More specifically. why would

the United Nations eliminate America's sovereign rights if they could?

You'll know the answer when you know and understand what sovereignty means.

Sovereign states are free, independent, and self-governing. A sovereign state,

such as America, has jurisdiction over all persons and properties within it's

territory. and claims the right to regulate its own economic life and domestic affairs.

A sovereign state has the option to exercise, at its own discretion, the right to

declare war, and increase its armaments without quotas, limits or interference.

Sovereignty is, of course, a negative word to those who claim that international

law is binding. So the United Nation argues that absolute freedom of sovereign' states

should be a thing of the past. Did you get that? The UN wants an end to America's freedom

and independence. Why? Because nobody can get control of a nation that will

fight to the death to maintain its freedom and independence.

THAT is sovereignty. Which may well be the most important thing that our

Founding Fathers gave to America. And only a madman or a fool would

give it up.

THE YEAR 2017– POST 13

By: JP Folsom, 2nd District Commander

Some of the activities that Post 13 participates in are

reported in this news letter some, are not. Why don't we review a little of both. Post 13 exist to fulfill the four pillars of

the American Legion. First is the rehabilitation of veterans, second national security, third Americanism and fourth

welfare of child and youth. Our post supports Boys State, the Auxiliary supports Girls State. Post 13 presents 50 med-

als to the ROTC , JROTC and school awards programs. Many of you have attended our Four Chaplin and Post ever-

lasting ceremony along with Memorial Day Service, Veterans Day Breakfast and flag retirement ceremony. Did you

know that Post 13 is heavily involved in the Big Bend Honor Guard? We have help to conduct over 170 internment's at

the National Cemetery. Probably, in my opinion, the most important thing that we do is when a veteran in need re-

quest help, we help. Our Commander Val Frailey takes a personal interest and see this task to it's completion. This by

no means is all that we do. But you as a member need to know that Post 13 is an active Post. There is a place for you

here.

Oh did I forget to mention that we also put out a monthly newsletter? How about supervising community service work-

ers? We get request for our members to go to the local schools to talk to the kids about their military experiences. For

God and Country we are Veterans serving Veterans.

P.S. Our baseball team has won the State championship three years running.

CORNER

“FOR ALL TO REMEMBER—HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE VETERANS, YOU WOULD NOT BE HERE”

Noel Hurst Post 13 Chaplain

FROM THE COMMANDER

Post 13 Commander

Wishing you and yours a very Merry

Christmas and a happy and prosper-

ous NEW YEAR.

Val.

Our Supreme Commander,

Our grateful hearts cry to You in praise at this Advent Season. We cry

in praise for

the matchless gift of your only Son, Jesus! You saw the problems, the

turmoil of

this world and You had mercy. You sent the One who would redeem

us for our

sinful state. There was no other sufficient sacrifice but You, our God,

provided the

only true solution to the sin problem. Hallelujah! I'm redeemed by

Love Devine,

Glory, Glory, Christ is mine. All to Him I now resign. Glory, Glory,

Christ is mine!

Our Father, the world is still in turmoil but, thanks be to God, You

are the solution

to the world's turmoil, yes, You are the answer to the sin problem.

And Your

solution is still available today, even after so many years! We claim

Your

Solution. We appropriate Your sacrifice. It avails for us today and we

rejoice

in your salvation. Your love, Your salvation is available for each of us

today.

There is no other remedy for the sin problem. You, Jesus, spilled Your

blood for our redemption and we accept Your salvation, the free gift

of

forgiveness of sin. Oh, yes, we have all sinned and come short of the

glory

of God but Your blood washes us "whiter than snow". What a privi-

lege,

what a gift!

The new year is upon us. A new year of opportunity, of difficulties. We

thank You, Father, that You have everything under control. We usu-

ally

cannot see the proper solution but we can be assured that You

know all about our problems and You know the best solution. Lord,

help us to rest assured that there is a best solution and that You

will lead us to the elusive answer.

Father, we thank You for our Legion Post, for the executive commit-

tee,

for the employees and for the willing volunteers. Thank You for the

Auxiliary and the willing helpers in that group. They make the Post

so

much more enjoyable. We pray Your blessings on each of those

helpful ladies. Grant wisdom to the Executive Committee as they

care for the business of the Post. May every member of the Post be

an asset to God and to our country! May each of us say with the

writer of old "may the words of my mouth and the meditations of

my heart be acceptable in thy sight, Oh Lord".

Father, help us this year 2018. May we face the problems with

faith in You being that You know the beginning from the end.

Some trust in horses and chariots but our eyes are on You.

We ask it all in the lovely name of Jesus, our Messiah. Amen.

DO UNTO OTHERS AS THOUGH YOU ARE THE OTHERS!!

A BIG THANK YOU! Pictured below are Post 13 and Unit 13 members working together decorating the Legion Hall for the

Christmas Holiday! A Menorah is also displayed to celebrate Hanukkah. They all gave up part of their

Sunday to chip in for this annual decorating occasion. A Big THANK YOU!!

As we close another year and reflect on our achievements, the Auxiliary has been very busy. In summary Unit 13

has collected stuffed animals for both the Tallahassee Police and the Leon County Sherriff's Department. Poppies

were distributed spreading the word of the sacrifices made by the men and women of the armed forces. The food

pantry at the VA Clinic and Vet Village has been stocked on numerous occasions, and stocking has been stuffed with

102 gift cards for veterans.

As we begin a new year, let's remember why we are American Legion Auxiliary members as we renew our commit-

ment to our Mission Statement and our Vision Statement:

In the Spirit of Service, Not Self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American

Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military and their fami-

lies, both at home and abroad. For God and Country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth,

and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace, and security.

The vision of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support the American Legion while becoming the

premier service organization and foundation of every community providing support for our veterans,

our military, and their families by shaping a positive future in an atmosphere of fellowship, patriotism,

peace, and security.

The Auxiliary will be collecting school supplies for all grades in January, if you would like to participate, bring your

supplies to our regular meeting on January 11th or drop them off in the Auxiliary room at the Post.

January brings our Chili Cook-off competition; ladies bring your best pot of chili and lets' see who will be taking the

Ray Stalling revolving trophy home this year.

his presidency, serving as a member of the Confederate House of Representatives, and was designated a

“sworn enemy of the United States.”

mand for metal replacement parts — went into effect.

Jan 20th

Central Intelligence Agency.

ARVN detachment trapped by two Vietcong platoons. Petty Officers Willis Goff and Larry Villareal took a 14-

foot Boston whaler ashore to rescue the ARVN troops. In the face of heavy automatic weapons fire, all 9 men

were evacuated in two trips. For their actions Goff and Villareal were each awarded the Silver Star for their

actions. The citation stated, “The nine men would have met almost certain death or capture without the as-

sistance of the two Coast Guardsmen.”

Jan 22nd

1957– The New York City “Mad Bomber”, George P. Metesky, WWI Marine Corps veteran, is arrested in Wa-

terbury, Connecticut and is charged with planting more than 30 bombs.
