This is our second newsletter of the 2013-2014 SPE Detroit Section year. As the fall weather starts to get cooler, the activities within the SPE Detroit Section begin to heat up.
The new section year got off to a great start in August. On Wednesday August 14th, I had the great pleasure to attend the graduation of the students who completed the first Plastics Materials and Applications Course offered this summer at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, MI. Dean Robert Leadley of Schoolcraft College was in attendance to present certificates to the seven (7) graduating students. I again would like to congratulate Bashkim Bruqi, Ana Godinez-Moreno, Oscar Gunn, Matthew Gustke, Cynthia Lane, Navdeep Singh, and Frank Tormino for successfully completing this first time program at Schoolcraft College. I would also like to thank Sassan Tarahomi, Ron Price, and Armando Sardanapoli who taught this inaugural plastics program. Plans are to offer this same course again this fall at Schoolcraft College.
The first meeting of 2013-2014 year of the SPE Detroit Section was held on August 19th at the American Chemistry Council (ACC) Headquarters in Troy, MI. We were very fortunate to have Mr. Jon Ratzlaff, SPE International President for 2013-2014, in attendance at this first meeting of the year. Jon discussed a number of topics with the meeting attendees, such as the revised SPE 030 Policy for TOPCONs, the Global Conferences being held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Mumbai, India, and Shanghai, China, the 2014 SPE ANTEC to be held in Las Vegas, NV, and the new software system upgrades being implemented by SPE International over the coming year.
Members of SPE Detroit Section Team have been hard at work planning and finalizing events coming up this fall and beyond. It started on Monday September 16th with the Technical Dinner Meeting at Schoolcraft College, Livonia, MI. Dean Robert Leadley of Schoolcraft College gave a presentation titled “The New Plastic Technology Program at Schoolcraft.” This
presentation was followed by a tour of the Schoolcraft College campus. A large crowd was in attendance that evening which included representatives from other colleges and universities in the Southeast and Mid-Michigan areas.
From October 6-9, the 15th Annual SPE TPO Automotive Engineered Polyolefins Global Conference will be held at the Marriot-Troy, 200 West Big Beaver Rd., Troy, MI. Platinum Sponsors for this event include Advanced Composites Ins, Exxon-Mobil, SABIC, and Trinity Resources of Canada. Approximately seventy (70) papers will be presented during this three (3) day conference. Five (5) keynote speakers representing five (5) companies, including Advanced Composites Inc., Borealis AG, Chrysler, IAC, and LMC Automotive, will discuss various topics on TPO’s and the Automotive Industry.
On Monday October 21st, the first plant tour of the year is scheduled at the Reliable Analysis Lab Testing Facility in Madison Heights, MI.
On the evening of Wednesday, November 6th the 43rd Automotive Innovations Awards Program will be held once again at the Burton Manor in Livonia, MI. This gala event draws between 700-800 attendees which display the Year’s Most Innovative Use of Plastics in Automotive Applications. Individual Awards are presented in a number of categories with the Grand Award presented from the winners of each individual category.
Planning is underway for two events coming in 2014. Gary Kogowski and Sandra McClelland are co-chairing and leading a team in the planning of the 2014 SPE AutoEPCON scheduled for Tuesday May 6th at the MSU Conference Center in Troy, MI. We have also begun the planning of the 2014 SPE Detroit Section Material Auction with Dawn Cooper and Chris Surbrook co-chairing this great event. More information will become available in the next month.

Todd Hoganis the winner of the
2013 Outstanding Member AwardIt’s rare that a member can be recognized for his individual contributions to a Society numerous times, particularly amongst this group of so many active volunteers. To accomplish that feat, the individual must have continued to display an exemplary level of commitment to the Society over an extensive period of time.
As a Section, we are blessed with such an individual. Todd Hogan joined SPE as a student member in 1988 and has been extremely active at both local and international levels ever since. Todd is a Research Scientist with The Dow Chemical Company in Midland, MI who he joined in 1990. He is responsible for leading the development of new film and sheet processes and products for targeted industries including solar, packaging and durable goods. To list his
accomplishments for SPE would require more space than I have been allowed so I will just detail the highlights.
At the local level, Todd has been the former mid-Michigan Section (now Detroit Section) President, Vice President, Past President, Councilor, Secretary, Membership Chair, Newsletter Editor and most recently Education Chair. I’ll return to elucidate on his activities during his tenure as Education Chair subsequently.
At the national level, Todd has served on the Section’s Committee numerous times, as Chair of the STAR Awards sub-committee, as Chair of the Students Activities Committee, as Vice-Chair of the Changing Needs Committee, on the ANTEC Technical Program Committee, on the YPP Committee and, for the better part of a decade, on the Honored Service Member Review Committee. He became an Honored Service Member of the Society himself in 2004.
As you can see, the superlatives I used in my opening statement were warranted.
But as if these achievements were not enough, Todd focused mid-Michigan’s education activities. In addition to our local University-based Student Chapter affiliates, Todd has helped introduce the world of the plastics engineer to K-12 students. Through his activities, the PlastiVan has been a constant on many local schools’ curricula. He has overseen the judging and award of the SPE International Essay Competition and has helped put plastics’ experts into local schools as part of the Classroom Demonstration program. Todd also managed Section presence at local events including Science Fairs and County Fairs.
None of these activities come without financial support though, and in that manner, Todd has truly excelled. Todd continues to almost single-handedly bring in 100’s of thousands of dollars to fund these educational activities without the assistance of supporting programs, or a drain on other Section activities. His ability to fund, and manage the funds, has helped our Section maintain the Education Committee that others look to as an example for best practices.
Todd’s activities have seen him being awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award twice in the past; this time we recognize his dedication with the Outstanding Member Award.

Education Committee Co-Chair
The school year is starting and with that the student chapters are meeting once again. You may have seen in previous newsletters that the Detroit Section now has three student chapters: Michigan State University, Kettering University, and Ferris State University. We are looking for volunteers to mentor the students and also to meet
with the students to share experiences of working in the plastic industry. If you would like to mentor or meet with students at one of these universities, please contact me at [email protected] We are also always open to suggestions for any of our education programs. If you have any please let us know.
MSU Student ChapterDexter Gregg
On August 27th, the SPE-MSU Chapter participated in the annual Sparticipation event to showcase clubs and groups on campus to interested students. Matt Brown, Aubrey Flint, Dexter Gregg, Jordan Martin, and Allison Sutter were in attendance to promote the Society of Plastics Engineers and to recruit new members.
The group raffled an SPE water bottle and there were 30 students who signed up to be on the email list. The MSU Chapter is excited to begin the new school year and to continue helping the club to grow. The first meeting of the year is on September 11th.
Membership Note
Even though you are a member of SPE International, you are not a member of the Detroit Section unless you have selected
Michigan-Detroit as one of your technical groups. members of SPE are entitled to select two Sections and/or Divisions at no charge, and to add additional groups for only $10/year. There are many
benefits in having Michigan-Detroit as one of your groups.

ACI Plastics, Inc. ACI has developed and patented a number of specialized technologies that provide a means for their customers to recover and recycle the plastic scrap they generate. These materials are reprocessed and rejuvenated so they may be used in their originally intended application. ACI provides reprocessed thermoplastic resins for injection mold and extrusion applications. Their recycled materials perform with the same characteristics, quality, consistency and predictability as the virgin resins they replace. All of this is combined with a significant cost savings compared to the cost of virgin materials.
ACI expertise lies in separating various contaminates from valuable reusable thermoplastic material. Their separation services include; multi-layer separation, paint removal, optical sorting, and electro-static separation. In addition to reprocessing resins, ACI also compound custom virgin resin Pflex-i Thermoplastic Elastomer. This product can be produced in any hardness or color required.
ACI has ISO 9001 certification which exemplifies their commitment to quality. ACI is also equipped with a comprehensive A2LA certified laboratory that includes a wide range of specialized testing equipment. This laboratory routinely performs testing of mechanical and physical properties of plastic materials as well as contamination analysis.

Pass It On!Electronic-Communication is the best way to reach a lot of people in a quick and low cost way. Websites contain voluminous information. Email is almost instantaneous and can include photos and attachments. Social Media sites let you choose groups of the most interest. The problem is that e-communications have to be known about and opened to be effective.
This current issue of Trends & Topics is a good example. It is only on the web, and it has to be “found” in order to read it. I would like to know how you “found” this newsletter on the web. Here are several ways to “find” it.
How to Find Our Newsletter on the Web
• Click the link in our News Brief notification.
• Click the link on our LinkedIn group notification.
• Click on “Newsletter” on our website.
• Search for “Detroit” on the SPE website.
All of our newsletters (both printed and web-only) are on the web. All of our News Briefs and meeting announcements are also on the web. But email and postal mail is usually only sent to Detroit Section members, and because of the sheer volume of mail from SPE and others, generic mail is often left unopened and unread.
Personal contact is the best way to get the message across. Even if people get multiple copies from friends, they are more likely to open and read the information from a known sender. Please take the time to pass on the SPE e-communications that you receive.
How to Help Pass It On to Others
• Send personal emails to friends and associates with links.
• Forward News Briefs and other SPE announcements.
• Encourage membership in the SPE Detroit Section.
• Encourage joining the LinkedIn Detroit Section Group.
Our QR Code takes you to our website www.SPEdetroit.com where you will find our Newsletters, News Briefs, Upcoming Events, Photos, Scholarships, Essay Contest, PlastiVan, and other Detroit Section activities.
Please contact or copy me with your responses to the above requests and/or any suggestions, comments, or questions about any aspect of e-communications at [email protected].
