    Volume 5 May 8, 2012 www.kimberleychronicle.co

We would like to welcome everyone to our th edition o Kimberley Chronicle. Natural disastseem to be this weeks theme. Since Natures Fury is in our backyard and on everyones mind we dcided to revisit 1948 and Kimberleys Biggest Disaster. Also, this week in 1903 is when the townFrank, our neighbours to the east experienced their own disaster. Te Prospectors account o the slion page 2 is a riveting one.Te sta at Kimberley Chronicle has decided to publish the paper on a biweekly basis rather thweekly. Tis decision was not due to any lack o interesting stories rom our area, rather it was so could spend more time with our amily. As always, your comments and suggestions are appreciated

Water Water Everywhere...While Mark Creek managed to stay neatly within its banks this past week, Kimberley Creek decided that iwould like to see the surace or the stretch between Morrisson Sub and BJs. Tankully olks in Kimberle

know what to do in a ood situation and any major damage was mostly avoided. Kimberley residents were

not quite so ortunate when MarkCreek rose over three eet over-night on the May Long Weekendin 1948. wenty houses werewashed away down the creekand over 50 houses were dam-

aged beyond repair. Cables weretied around some o the housesto try to keep them rom allinginto the creek, unortunately mosto them were split in two by thecable and the orce o the creek. Some houses that ell into thechannel and were acting as damshad to be blasted away to let thewater run. Tankully Kimberley

had no shortage o men amiliarwith blowing stu up, Comincoemployees were all busy eitherblasting houses or piling sandbags. All in all ever $500,000 in damage(over 4,500,000 in 2012 dollars)was casued by the ood. Hope-ully any big waves seen on MarkCreek in the uture will be enjoyedwith a paddle.

prospector . May 3, 1903. Under An AvalancheTe coal town o Frank, situated at the oothills on the eastern slope othe Rocky Mountains, was overwhelmed by a huge rockslide about 4:3Wednesday morning.News o the disaster reached Steele Wednesday morning, but the repoare wild, vague and contradictory.Te rst report was that a volcanic eruption had occurred and that thetown had been buried under an avalanche o eruptive rocks and ashesTen came a second report that the disaster was due to an explosion ogas in the mine, and that the whole ace o urtle Mountain, overlookthe town had been blown out, and the greater part o the town and allinhabitants buried beneath the debris.A later report, which is probably the correct explanation o the disasteis that a huge landslide had occurred and that the whole eastern portio

o urtle Mountain rom a height o 4400 eet having slid down andacross the entire valley.Te number o atalities reported was in the neighbourhood o one hudred, mostly women and children. Tere was known to be a number ominers to be working in the mine when the disaster occurred, and eawere entertained or their saety, which were accentuated when the re-port got abroad that there had been an explosion and that the mine won re. Happily this additional horror was spared. Te inside workino the mine, were not injured and all but two o the entombed men, wwere suocated, worked their way out o the tunnel in saety.Te railway track is blockaded or over one and a hal miles, and all th

trafc over the Crows Nest line will be at a standstill or at least twoweeks.Fears o a ood, consequent upon the damming o the Old Man Riveare entertained, and are thought probable that urther slides may occuin which event the ruin o the town will be complete.A list o those killed is not yet obtainable. About 60 o the dead are sto be women and children. welve miners working outside o the minwere crushed to death by ying rocks.Te threatened ood this evening seems to be less probable. A largeorce o men has been at work trying to create a new channel that

the waters o Old Mans river may be carried o. Te men will workthroughout the night, and it is hoped that the water will be owing

through the new channel by morning. Continued on Next Page
