SILVERWARE INCREASES

This term saw three of our teams reach the finals in their respective Cups, The Senior Girls Munster Hockey, the Senior Boys Munster Hockey and The Junior Boys Munster Rugby. Two of them came away with their respec-tive titles.

The Senior Boys, captained by Jonathan Powell were unfortunate to be beaten by Bandon Grammar in a thrilling final which saw them expend all of their physical and mental energy in an unsuccessful, yet unwavering, effort to come out on top.

The Senior Girls, captained by Sophie Lilburn, had a very testing game against Regina Mundi but came away with a 2-1 victory. This was achieved after a very challenging first half. The girls emerged after half-time with re-newed energy and determination, following a motivating pep-talk from coaches, Laura Peters and Aoife Ryan. The renewed Villiers girls worked consistently as a team, enabling both Holly Redden and Grace Tutty to get past the Regina Mundi keeper, and ultimately take the silver-ware.

The ‘icing on the cake’ this term was the Junior Boys’ success over New-town. Captained by Conor Ryan, the boys dominated from the start, with superb performances from the captain, Conor, Ben Murphy, Gordon Shan-non, Jack Hennessey and Giovanni Rangone. They were sorry to be without junior team stalwart Callum Morrow, who was missing due to injury.

Needless to say we are very proud of all our teams and appreciate the effort both they and their coaches put in. Well done and let’s retain them next year.

SKI TRIP

The ski trip 2014 was a great experience for all involved. From the 15th of February to the 22nd, we were occupied with bunny slopes to black slopes, amazing hot chocolate accompanied by scrumptious pizza, ice skating, swimming and tobogganing.

Early risers had the chance to ski for an extra hour each morning, while the rest of the group joined at 11am. We made our way to breakfast and munched on rolls, croissants, Coco Pops and more, fuelling for the day ahead. We then took the bus to the fitting rooms where we collected our ski boots, skis and poles. We would then waddle to the slopes for a two hour lesson. After that we had a two hour break in which we were left to our own devices. We had the choice to ski some more, have a bite to eat, or just relax in a nearby restaurant sipping a cup of hot chocolate. Then we were back for another two hours of skiing at 3 o’clock.

After each evening session, when we were all tired and aching, we were relieved to get the bus back to the hotel. We were free to have a little stroll into town or have a hot shower. At 7:30, we made our way down to dinner and at 9:00 we were ready for our evening activity. These evening activities included swimming, tobogganing and raving at the local disco. Everyone was sad to go home at the end of the week. Overall it was one of my highlights of the school year.

DAVID COWPAR’S BOOK LAUNCH

The book launch of David Cowpar’s novels was held on the 30th of Janu-

ary 2014 in Villiers’ library.

David Cowpar started writing when he was a student in Villiers. His novel

“The ODDs Beginnings” was the first in his seven novel series, which he

began writing while a student in Villiers. He finished his first draft in the

sports hall while he was supposed to be doing his exams! The ODDs Be-

ginnings is a novel about three teenagers thrust into a world most people

only have nightmares about. They become the Water, Fire and Growth

Empowered and have to learn how to control these powers. Meanwhile an

ancient Irish demon plans to unleash an army and take over the world.

The key to stopping him might be found in a recurring nightmare…A

riveting read for all.

His second novel, in his second series, tackles contemporary issues in a

non-fantasy genre. “Lee Kennedy, A Life Changing Friendship” is the

story of how a boy takes comfort in a friendship when his father becomes

abusive. This friendship helps shape him into the person he was meant to

be, but who is Joshua Tetra, his friend, and what secrets is he hiding?

David’s parents and brother attended Villiers and his sister is currently in

third year. His credits the support he received at school from his former

English teachers, Dr Johnson and Ms Mary O‘Sullivan, and his History

teacher, Ms Janet Woods, as being huge motivating factors for achieving

his dreams, to become a novelist.

SPANISH EXCHANGE

On February 4th, following the success of last year’s Spanish exchange, a group of 2nd year students

studying Spanish travelled with Mr Mc Crohan and Ms Sexton to Spain for a week full of Spanish fun!

The exchange will undoubtedly benefit their Spanish for the junior cert exam in 2015.

Each student stayed for a week in their exchange partner’s house, which gave them an insight into Span-

ish culture, food, education system and leisure activities.

During the week in Spain, Villiers students participated in numerous activities, ranging from learning tra-

ditional Spanish dances to walking the Cabo de gato, Andalucía’s largest coastal protected area. This is a

wild and isolated landscape with some of Europe's most original geological features.

I spoke with two students, Orla and Taine who went on the Spanish exchange and got their opinions on

the week abroad…

What happened on the night of departure from Ireland?

“A few of us slept at Taine’s house and we barely slept at all with the excitement. We flew from Cork to

Malaga at 2am. We were wrecked but the stop for pizza during the 5 hour bus journey definitely perked

us up! When we finally arrived we met our host families.

What was staying with a host family like?

“They were amazing! The food was so nice; Paella and Churros were just a few of the many Spanish

dishes we got to try.”

What was the most memorable part of the trip?

“It had to be going to the beach, we bonded with our exchanges partners even more so than at the

school. While the Spanish claimed that is was too cold for the beach, we thought it was fab as it was still

a lot warmer than Ireland! Some of us even went for a swim at 9pm.

Would you recommend the Spanish exchange?

“Yes, it improved my oral Spanish a lot, although the Spanish students were much better at English than

we were at Spanish as they had been studying it for 5 years.

MOVIE REVIEWS

12 YEARS A SLAVE

The 86th Academy Awards finished on the 2nd of March. Twelve Years a Slave received wide critical

acclaim, and was named the best film of the year by several media outlets. The film won three

Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress and Best

Adapted Screenplay. It was also awarded the Golden Globe Award

for Best Drama Motion Picture.

Maybe because this year is the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther

King's famous speech, "I Have a Dream", there have recently been a

lot of movies about the U.S. civil rights movement, the abolition of

slavery and the emancipation of black/negro community. Themed

movies, including last year’s “Lincoln" and "Django Unchained", as well

as this year's "The Butler", and "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" are

examples of these. I believe that "Twelve Years a Slave” falls in the

same category as these films.

The film was adapted from the 1853 memoir Twelve Years a Slave by

Solomon Northup. This production was from Solomon Northup’s

personal experience, a New York State, born free African American, who was educated and mar-

ried, kidnapped in Washington and sold into slavery. He worked on plantations in the state of Lou-

isiana for twelve years before his release.

But nowadays, when we remember the shock, indignation and emancipation from “Twelve Years a

Slave”, we will believe that Steve McQueen made another great movie. To a certain extent, this

movie is another “The Shawshank Redemption” but it happened to a black man who was enslaved in

that dark time. Steve McQueen has used a series of uncomfortable scenes to force audiences to

empathise with what Solomon Northup was feeling. This feeling became stronger with the devel-

opment of the plot and McQueen kept the audience captivated throughout the plot. A superb

movie with great cinematography, its not surprising that it did so well at the Academy Awards.

THE HOBBIT

Amongst the many brilliant movies released in 2013, the Hob-

bit has rated in my top 10. Directed by Peter Jackson, the first

instalment of the trilogy; An Unexpected Journey was released

in 2012, with the second instalment; The Desolation of Smaug

released in 2013.

The story is centred around the protagonist Bilbo Baggins, a

complacent Hobbit of the Shire who relishes his easy and re-

laxed life and most of all, his snug little home under the hill of Bag End. However, Bilbo’s easy life takes an

unexpected turn when the wizard Gandalf the Grey enlists his help in an epic quest to reclaim the lost

Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. In the company of thirteen dwarves their

journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly

Wargs and Sorcerers.

While I was quickly and easily transported back to the familiar Shire I had fallen in love with 11 years ago,

many others had very different opinions on the film. A top critic sharply stated that she felt “it was a

bloated, shockingly tedious trudge that managed to look both overproduced and unforgivably cheesy.” I did

enjoy the first two instalments of The Hobbit however they do not in anyway live up to the incredible Lord

of the Rings trilogy which grasped the audience’s attention due to the depth and modesty of the story. I feel

the movie lost direction as Jackson piled on layer after layer of extraneous action and incident with An Un-

expected Journey dragging on for almost three hours. Critique aside, the movie still displayed an excellent

cast, reacquainting fans with familiar faces such as Ian McKellan who stars as Gandalf, Cate Blanchett as

Galadriel, and of course Andy Serkis, one of the screens most celebrated villains, as Gollum.

MUSIC REVIEWS

2013 was a big year for dance music and techno dance music. 2013 consisted of both good songs including

Take Me To Church by Hozier and Love Me Again by John Newman , and not so good songs such as Holy

Grail by Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake and 23 by Miley Cyrus. However no one can really say for certain what

songs are “good” or “bad” because after all, it is, at the end of the day, up to the person with the earphones

plugged in.

Some great dance songs came out in 2013, including Drinking From The Bottle by Calvin Harris, Reload by

Sebastian Ingrosso, Tommy Trash and John Martin and Animals by Martin Garrix. Songs such as What Does

The Fox Say by Ylvis and The Harlem Shake by Baauer also became very popular, but were taken as a joke

rather than actual songs.

Overall, 2013 was quite a mixed year in terms of music. There was a large dominance of dance music how-

ever alternative, indie and other types of music shone through also.

HUNK OF THE MONTH

Benedict Cumberbatch is an English actor, known for his role in the TV series,

‘Sherlock’. He was born and raised in London. He attended Brambletye School

and Harrow School and this is where he began acting. After he finished school, he

took a year off to teach English in a Tibetan monastery. On his return, he studied

drama at Manchester University. After graduating, he continued his training as an

actor at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Benedict has worked in theatre, TV, film and radio. His breakthrough on the big

screen came in 2004 when he portrayed Stephen Hawking in the television movie Hawking. He was nomi-

nated for a BAFTA for Best Actor for his performance. In 2010, he became a household name as Sherlock

Holmes in a British TV series, Sherlock. This BBC series has made him one of the best known faces on Brit-

ish television.

In 2011, he appeared in two Oscar nominated films – War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. In 2013,

Cumberbatch also appeared in J. J. Abrams's sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. Three of the four films he

starred in during the second half of 2013 premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival: The Fifth

Estate, where he played WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, August: Osage County, playing Charles Aiken

and 12 Years a Slave, where he played William Prince Ford, a slave owner.

Cumberbatch’s career seems to be progressing very quickly in the right direction, and we hope to hear (or

rather, see) more from him in the future!

TY PRO’S AND CON’S

As students approach the end of 3rd, there is often a lot of contemplation and anticipation about Transition

Year. A lot of people tend to get the impression that TY is a doss year, a break from homework, a chance for our

brains to turn to mush just before the Leaving cert! Well, as a student who is currently in TY, I am going to give

you a flavour of what I think TY is doing for me.

Pros:

TY gives students a chance to develop their social skills, as you have to work as part of a team for a lot of

activities. Before TY I felt I preferred to work independently, however now I much prefer working as part of

a team as I can share my ideas!

Through the course of the year I have developed interests in new hobbies such as badminton, drawing, cy-

cling, writing, metalwork and more! Had I not chosen to do TY I probably would never have developed

these interests, but instead be completely overcome with stress, cramming for my mocks and about as fit as a

sloth.

My new hobbies have given me the opportunity to get actively involved in activities outside of school, for

example; I will be participating in the Cycle Against Suicide to raise awareness of mental health, entering the

Texaco art competition and English writing competitions.

In my opinion, it is much wiser to sample the Leaving Cert subjects and discover what suits you rather than

plunging straight into 5th year and into the unknown! I was almost certain accounting was the perfect sub-

ject for me, however after sampling it I’m not so sure. Chemistry was a subject I never dreamed of choosing

for my Leaving Cert, however after exploring my career options I have developed a keen interest in it.

TY is full of opportunities to gain confidence, and the best way to go about this is to test your limits. You

are given a chance to go wild and do something you wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to participate in,

such as strutting down the catwalk at the fashion show, performing in a drama and camping in the wilder-

ness of Achill Island.

Some of us know what we want to do for a living from the age of five, but others, like me change our mind

on a daily basis. TY opens up a whole new array of career options whilst pointing us in the right direction;

this is made possible through the sampling blocks and the career investigations.

Cons:

?????????????????????

Conclusion:

As you can clearly see there are no Cons so I can definitely say that Pros have the upper hand.

One of the only negative things I have to say about TY is that, for those who did not take advantage of the

year, the academic part of brain may have neglected slightly. It is important not to doss through the year be-

cause that is most certainly not the purpose for it existing in our school. If you stay attentive during class and

actually make use of the hundreds of worksheets that are handed out, I can assure you that you will stay on

top of your game.

Some people tend to shy away from the opportunities that TY offers, and instead choose to take the lazy

path through the year. I would like to reinforce that TY is not a doss year but a well-deserved rest from an

exam driven year, you just need to grab the once in a lifetime chances that TY offers!

LET’S TALK ABOUT

H E A L T H

Yes, this topic again. Learning to live a healthy lifestyle is a highly under-rated attribute of our lives, and is actually a very

important skill that can’t be lost once you acquire it. Let’s take a look at some of the most vital parts of nutrition.

HOW TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH YOUR HEALTHY LIFESTYLE PLAN

Did you know that over 90% of diets fail? Why is that? Is it because we lack the commit-ment necessary to follow through? Or simply because we tend to choose the wrong diet for our lifestyle? Whatever the reason, these tips will help to ensure your next plan isn’t just another statistic in this long list of dieting failures.

Set goals! You need direction in your plan. If your goals are tough but realistic, your con-fidence will go through the roof, further motivating you to stick to it. Contrarily, if you set unrealistic goals, you’ll lose confidence when you don’t achieve them, causing you to break your plan.

Don’t lose the motivation that inspired you to start in the first place. You could write your reason for your health kick on a slip of paper and stick it to your mirror. Or, if you’re dieting for the purpose of achieving your dream figure, save or print out pictures of what you would like your figure to look like. Other people’s “before and after” pictures can be very motivating also.

Set up a plan that is committable. Don’t start a plan that you’re completely unlikely to follow through with. If you’re used to sitting at home on the couch all day, it’s doubtful that you’ll be able to cope with three months of daily jogging and no junk food.

Start small. The reason most people don’t follow through their plan is simple; we give up most often during the hardest part – the beginning. The excitement we feel at the start of a new diet and fitness goal is usually enough to get us going. But piling on a sudden amount of workouts and new eating habits will leave us feeling exhausted and overwhelmed; giving us all the more reason to ditch the routine completely. If you take small steps and increase things over time, your body will get used to the new routine and adjust with you. Eventually you will be able to handle stricter diets and tougher workouts with ease because your body will be accustomed to it.

Don’t starve yourself. Trying to lose weight by starv-ing yourself is one of the worst things you can do. Not only will it cause you to become hormonal, tired and unhealthy, it’s also a scientifically flawed approach. Your body needs to take in calories so that it can burn

fat when you exercise. Also, giving up food will slow down your metabolism, meaning that when you do eat, you put on a lot more weight than you would originally have.

Reward yourself. Whenever you reach the mini-goals you set for yourself, reward yourself…in moderation. If you enjoy ice cream, enjoy a small sized serving of your favourite flavour.

Take on a challenge. If you get bored with your new routine, then it’s time to put a new, more difficult goal out there for yourself. Starting to skip breakfast again? Challenge yourself to have a healthy breakfast every day for 30 days. Are you sick and tired of running the same training run, the same distance on the same path? It’s time to change the route and challenge yourself to new speeds and distances. Or, try going without that dessert for a whole month. Use your imagination on this one.

Scare yourself. Fear is a great motivator and can be very effective. Think about the negative consequences that you could face if you don’t make healthy eating and exercise a part of your life – diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, premature aging, arthritis, the list goes on.

Don’t procrastinate. If you don’t have the motivation to start today, what makes you think that you’ll have the motivation to start tomorrow?! The earlier you start, the earlier you’ll attain your goal.

DIET MYTHS

Now that we’ve learnt how to maintain a steady, healthy lifestyle let’s take a look at some of the myths concerning diet that may be preventing you from reaching your goal.

1) Low fat dieting is good for losing weight - FALSE.

Our body needs to be getting 1/3 of its calories from fat. We need fat for energy, tissue repair and to transport vital vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E and K. Rather than cutting down on fats completely, remove all saturated fats from your diet and instead switch to unsaturated fats.

2) Fasting makes you lose weight - FALSE.

If you start fasting for a week just so that you can lose enough weight to fit into those new pair of jeans or that nice shirt you are causing your body more damage than you think. By fasting you are not only removing that tiny bit of fat from your body but also muscle. This in turn can cause the rate of your metabolism to drop. Not good. You’ve only done your-self worse. If you are going to be dieting, maintain a daily exercise routine so those muscles don’t disappear.

3) Eating fattening food will cause you to gain rapid weight - FALSE.

You have to consume an extra 3500 calories to gain one pound. Don’t believe what the scales are showing you, it’s most likely fluid. (This doesn’t mean you have to go binge eating.)

4) Snacking is always a bad idea - FALSE.

I know we think that by snacking between meals we are ruining our appetite but the reality of it is that we are most likely saving ourselves from eating way too much food for lunch or dinner. When you’re feeling peckish, grab an apple or a cracker. Beware that fattening food such as chocolate bars and jellies may look very appealing but will do you worse than eating your large dinner of lunch. Stick to the healthy.

EFFECTS OF CERTAIN SPORTS ON

YOUR BODY

Sadly, you can't decide you want to drop pounds around

just your waist or create a gap between your thighs. How-

ever, if you want to target one part of your body slightly

more than the rest, there are certain sports and exer-

cises you can choose to help you attain this goal.

Slimmer calves - yoga, stretches

More toned calves – hiking, skipping, dancing

Slimmer thighs – jogging, cardio

More toned thighs – hockey, rugby

Bigger bum – squats, hockey

Smaller bum – (reduce calorie intake)

Abs/Flat stomach – running, rowing, gym

Smaller waist – dancing, hula hooping

Toned arms – weight lifting, rowing

TY DRAMA

The annual TY drama was held on the 13th and 14th of February in LIT’s Millennium Theatre. Over 90 students were either involved in the play as an actor or backstage worker, and both performances were very successful.

‘The Dreamers’ is a play written by Maeve Stone, theatre director and past pupil of Villiers. The plot centres on The Devil and his desire to stop teenagers from dreaming, hoping and imagining their future aspirations. With the help of his Devil crew, a few misfortunate bonds and their gold digger babes, a group of teenagers must unite to fight for their freedom. It won’t be easy with the control the devil wields on all those around them.

We thoroughly enjoyed our chance to tread the boards and we extend a big thank you to the wonderful directors Ann Blake and Niamh Bowen, backstage staff, musicians, LIT’s Millennium Theatre, and Ms Quinn and Ms Storey for facilitating the drama.

M.U.N. TRIP

MUN or Model United Nations is a conference similar to the UN in which stu-dents participate as delegates on various committees and commissions. This year, Villiers students are attending RIMUN (Rome International MUN) and BIMUN (Budapest International MUN).

The first MUN, which has already taken place, is RIMUN. Twelve students from fourth and fifth year and two teachers travelled to Rome on the 27th of March. We left the school at 11am, and arrived at our hotel in the late evening.

The conference began the next day with the opening ceremony, where the delegate for each country had to make a short speech. Villiers represented Mexico, Cambo-dia, and Germany, and our ambassadors were Morgan Clarke, Aoife Curtin, and Lauren Hannon.

MUN began properly the day after, when the delegates went straight into lobbying – trying to get other countries to sponsor different resolutions, which propose solutions to a number of different issues. This year the topics under discussion included sustainable development, narcotic drugs, gender-based violence, and pro-tection of the LGBT community.

All in all, it was a very eventful MUN – Lauren Hannon succeeded in getting her Resolution passed at the General Assembly; Morgan Clarke was awarded official best delegate on his committee and Meadhbh Barry was voted best first-time dele-gate on her commission.

Budapest delegates left on Wednesday 9th and are due to return in the first week of the Easter holidays.

RDS CYCLE AGAINST SUICIDE

On the 14th of January the TY Community class headed off to Dublin for an Orange adventure at the RDS. The group led by Mr McNair and Ms Downey attended the Student Leaders Congress in association with the "Cycle Against Suicide" campaign in Dublin. The Congress aimed to promote positive mental health and help-seeking behaviour in young people as well as conveying the powerful message that “it’s ok not to feel ok and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help”. This was a first-of-its-kind event that saw over 4,000 young people from secondary schools all around the country coming together to help break the stigma attached to mental health issues. Guest speakers on the day included Brent Pope, Bressie and campaign organiser Jim Breen. A panel of well known sports players and musicians including ‘the Heathers’, ‘Royseven’s’ Paul Walsh and Co.Cavan goalkeeper Alan O’Mara all lifted the lid on the depression which engulfed them in the past.

The day hosted many interesting features including a quote competition in which the students were asked to write their favourite quote down on paper. At the end of the day the most inspirational quote was picked; “When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down “happy”. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.” - John Lennon. The students were also given a blank letter and asked to write something motivational to their future-selves. These letters will be posted to the students sometime in the future. The response to the Student Leader Congress was incredible! Mr McNair who organised the trip later said “he felt that the overwhelming number who attended made it feel as if what we were doing with the TY Com-munity group was part of a much bigger process”. Also “to hear celebrities talk about their men-tal health issues so openly aided in erasing the stigma around mental health and helped to break down the barrier. As mental health can affect anyone at any stage, it has no boundaries. It’s ok not to feel ok and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help :)

DEPRESSION is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person's thoughts, behaviour,

feelings and sense of well-being.

Depression affects at least one in six people at some point in their lives.

Two- thirds of people suffering from depression do not seek the necessary treatment.

80 % of people who had depression and received treatment significantly improved their lives.

Women experience depression twice as much as men.

Exercise is the easiest and least expensive cure for depression. Just walking 30 minutes a day will help you and sometimes completely alleviate your symptoms.

Alcohol is a depressant. Self-medication is not going to get you better and will surely make you worse over time.

Remember that all medications, including anti-depressants, have side effects.

HOW TO DEAL WITH DEPRESSION

Seek help: Talk to somebody…it could be all you need to sort out your worries.

Medical causes: Talk to your family or visit your doctor.

Begin your healing: Sometimes we become so focused on the bad things that we miss out on all the things in our life that are good.

Find a role-model: You’d be surprised to know that those celebrities we see on our telly could be going through the same thing as us or have gone through the same thing.

Research: Research your depression.

Take care of your body: Get enough sleep. Try to exercise as well. A fit body is a healthy mind.

HAS MILEY CYRUS REALLY CHANGED?

Miley Cyrus has become quite a controversial figure in today’s society. Many critics have lashed out on her sudden image change and behaviour which has caused many arguments on sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Insta-gram etc... People claim that Miley Cyrus is a bad influence but I hold a completely different opinion.

We were first introduced to the young singer/actress in the year of 2006 on the show ‘Hannah Montana’. It was a massive hit and went on to air 4 seasons but sadly was cancelled after Miley decided that she was too old to play the character and wanted to try new things. Miley Stewart was a sweet, young girl who didn’t want people to know her true identity as she was afraid to be treated differently. She was shown to be somebody who was selfless, car-ing, funny and adventurous. Everything that girls growing up aspire to be. Reading through blogs and magazines, I found a lot of people to be saying how much she had changed and asking questions such as ‘where has the good girl gone?’ ‘Why is she rebelling?’ Why are we all so convinced that she changed? She was playing a fictional char-acter. While she was on the show; she was expected to behave the same way off screen as she did on screen. Rat-ings would have gone down if she didn’t behave correctly and that would have been bad for the show. As a good actress does, she played her role properly. The girl we saw was created by script writers. We all know that the ages 13-18 is when we start finding ourselves. We try to figure out who we really are. What kind of styles we prefer to follow, how dark we want our makeup, do we want to wear makeup at all, how long/short our hair should be? Miley Cyrus did not have the chance to even think about any of this until she got off the show. She never really went through that rebel stage while she was signed on to Disney. After the show was cancelled we began to see a so called ‘changed’. Maybe for once we were actually seeing who she really was.

Another factor people seem to leave out when they think of her change is the toll that the industry naturally takes on performers. It doesn’t come as a surprise when people say that ‘sex sells’. Regardless of how much you may try to convince yourself that it’s only about the music. It isn’t. Perhaps this could just be my opinion but there’s a reason we flip through magazines and all we see are done up stars, plastered in makeup and wearing the latest trends. There’s also the whole point that a singer’s job is to entertain and no one can say that Miley Cyrus isn’t entertaining. Be it her coming out half naked and twerking at the VMA’s or spitting out water to her fans during a concert, we are always trying to find out what her next stunt is and we find ourselves interested no matter what it is.

Miley Cyrus has grown up; we can’t keep looking back on that little girl and exclaiming how much she’s changed. We all change at some point and it shouldn’t be something we are scolded for. The only real thing Miley can be accused of is her little skimpy outfits…that’s her choice. There will always be people out there who don’t like you, we just weren’t made to please everybody and if we found that we did, it just means we mustn’t be living com-pletely how we want and being who we truly are. Miley Cyrus is an idol to so many girls, and I hardly think that a few critics are going to make her change who she is.

OSCAR SELFIE

Amidst the glitz and glamour of the 2014 Oscars, Ellen

DeGeneres’s selfie will remain the most memorable

event of the night. The photograph from Oscars host

DeGeneres attracted more than 3.5 million retweets.

The selfie to end all selfies was taken by Bradley Coo-

per and included Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep,

Kevin Spacey, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lawrence, Jared

Leto, Channing Tatum and Lupita Nyong’o. Twitter

sent out an apology for a disrupted service of more than

20 minutes due to the level of retweeting.

In the wee hours of Friday 4th April, 10 students and 3 staff set off from Villiers on a cross-curricular trip to Belgium. Despite the early start, the spirits were high and upon arriving in Brussels International airport there was no time to waste as the group travelled directly to the European Parliament. The group was treated to a fascinating tour and

frank discussion of what really happens in the Parliament Buildings. A brief lunch followed and then it was time to check in at the beautiful Meininger Hotel where students could finally relax after a gruelling opening day of the trip. The day was not over yet however, as there was still time to visit Grand Place, the Manneken Pis and try some local Belgian waffles and chocolate. The highlight of the trip however was Saturday's tour to the Ypres Salient and the World War 1 trenches and battle sights. Students were given a wonderful insight into the battles, con-ditions and aftermath of the Great War by our fascinating guide Bob Findley. As one student remarked, this really was a trip of a lifetime. There was just time to catch "The Last Post" at the Menin Gate before dashing to catch the last train back to Brussels after an exhausting yet affecting day. After two hectic days, Sunday provided students with a wel-come sleep in and a more casual trip to Brussels to visit the Brussels museum and visit some of the mouth watering choco-late shops around Grand Place, before making the long trip back to Limerick. Our sincere thanks to the PTA, the Student Council and Ms. Storey for their support in making this trip possible. While this is the first time this trip has been organ-ised in Villiers, it is hoped that the positive experience will mo-tivate others in Villiers to become involved in commemorating World War 1 in this centenary year.

FUN FACTS ABOUT EASTER

Easter Sunday is only a few hops away, and while you are colouring eggs, eating chocolate bunnies and searching your home for hidden treats, here are some facts to share with your friends and family.

Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Christ three days after his death. It is the oldest Christian holiday and the most important day of the church year. Christians consider Easter eggs to symbolize joy and celebration, new life and res-urrection.

After Halloween, Easter is the biggest candy consuming holiday. 120 million pounds of candy are bought each year, enough to fill four dump trucks.

65% of adults prefer milk chocolate over dark chocolate (27%) and white chocolate (8%).

In the UK, each child receives an average 8.8 Easter eggs each year.

In medieval times, a festival of ‘egg-throwing’ was held in church. The priest would throw a hard-boiled egg to one of the choir boys, and then it was tossed from one choir boy to the next. When the clock struck 12, whoever held the egg, was the winner and got to keep the egg. Lucky boy!

In all, 91.4 million Easter eggs are made for Easter every year, followed closely by 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies. And, when taking a bite into one of those millions of chocolate bunnies, 76% of Americans prefer to bite off the ears first, while 5% eat the feet first and 4% eat the tail first.

EASTER AROUND THE WORLD

Europe: Easter is celebrated usually by lighting giant bonfires on hilltops and in churchyards on Easter Eve.

England: As well as exchanging chocolate on Easter, sometimes people fill Easter bonnets with daffodils and give these

to people as a gift.

Germany: Here Easter is called ‘Ostern’. Luckily children get off for 3 weeks during Easter. Good Friday, Easter Satur-

day and Easter Sunday are the days people in Germany don’t work at all.

Romania: Easter is celebrated as per the rituals followed by the Eastern Orthodox Church. High spirits and festive mood

engulfs the country on Easter. The celebrations begin almost a week before Easter Day.

SUMMER BUCKETLIST

I know it may be a bit too early to start talking about summer but we all need something to look forward to... all the studying for those rotten exams have got us dreaming up plans for our summer holidays but what are we going to do? It’s become quite popular making bucket lists. Girls and boys around the world have lists up on the wall of things to do with the bf; diaries are filled with places to go and people to see. How about a few things we definitely think should be on your bucket list. (Some may be a bit weird… a lot weird.)

· Swim in a baby pool full of ice · Go somewhere busy around town with a ‘free hugs’ sign on your back · Drive around on back roads with country music blaring. · Go to Starbucks and order the most complicated thing on the menu. · Temporarily dye your hair a crazy colour (I’m thinking a bit of blue with pink? ) · Hold a strangers hand on a roller coaster ‘’oh hi.’’ · Pay for something with all pennies/cents. · Sneak into a restaurant and pretend to be a waiter/waitress. · Sing really badly in the middle of the street for tips. · Start a gradual clap. · Buy a guitar, play it on the street, then smash it off the ground. · Throw a tantrum in the middle of Dunnes or Penneys. · Walk down the street in something Lady Gaga would wear. · Convince a random person that you’re their long lost third cousin.

If none of that interests you, maybe just go to a … zoo? The beach? Just don’t be a ‘nana’ this summer and get

out and do things! Y’all only live once, so live it good!

SENIOR GIRLS HOCKEY OVERVIEW

Senior Girls hockey got off to a flying start this season with 40 plus girls making training on Monday and

Thursday evenings. The girls were enthusiastic and very motivated putting in some gruelling fitness ses-

sions before their first games. Both the Senior B and C squads trained together all season with skill, fit-

ness and teamwork improving on a weekly basis. Both teams were extremely competitive all season with

the Senior C girls placing second in their league. The Senior B girls lost just one league game and went on

to win the Senior B Cup. The final was held in Harlequins Cork and both the Villiers team and their sup-

porters did the school very proud. The Senior Girls have begun preparations for next season and look

forward to the challenge of retaining their title.

RUGBY TRIP TO DUBLIN

Rugby players from 2nd to 5th year, next year’s prospective Junior and Senior squads, travelled to Dublin on

Friday 7th of April for an overnight stay in Dublin in preparation for next year’s season. They competed in

two fixtures against King’s Hospital in Palmerstown, unfortunately losing both despite some positive, com-

mitted play. The group stayed at the Greenisle Hotel and conducted themselves immaculately. The high-

light of the weekend came in the form of the Ireland v Italy match in the Aviva Stadium where the players

were wowed by a great Irish performance and had the privilege of witnessing Brian O’Driscoll’s last game

in an Irish jersey.

Senior Rugby

The seniors will be competing in a pan-Munster 10-a-side competition this week. We wish them all the best

in that.

1st Year Rugby

The 1st Years competed excellently in a Munster blitz in Tipperary on the 26th March and won two games.

They also had their performance of the season against Ard Scoil Rís, winning 17-0 with excellent individual

and group performances. The future looks bright for them.

SENIOR/JUNIOR GIRLS SOCCER OVERVIEW

Girls soccer has reached new heights this year with our minor girls reaching

the F.A.I Munster final in Scanlon Park this Monday against Abbey Com-

munity School, Waterford. So far, they have beaten St.Caimin’s, Pallaskenry,

and St. Angela’s of Waterford on their way to the final. They are only one

stop away from an All Ireland semi final. Secondly, our senior girls are in

the Shannon league final against Laurel Hill after Easter.

Regretfully, our 1st years girls didn’t do too well, but we see great potential

and know that they will come together as a team in time for next years com-

petitions.

EQUESTRIAN

Equestrian events have been few and far between this term, but where there have been opportunities to partici-

pate the Villiers Equestrian Team have demonstrated their skill and expertise. During the St. Patrick’s weekend,

Oisin DeBarra participated in the Hunter-Trials, in Offaly and performed very well.

In March, a 12 strong team, with Gordon Shire as chef d’equipe, participated in an Inter-schools, hosted by

Crescent College Comprehensive in Clonshire. Allana Thakore, demonstrated huge improvement, by getting a

double clear in the 60cm competition.

In the 80cm competition, Laura O’Connor, Amelia DeCarteret, Maeve Boston, Natasha Hanrahan and Roisin

Reynolds also got double clears and qualified for the jump-off against the clock. They all rode extremely well,

with Maeve Boston taking third place.

Della Daly was our only competitor in the 1m competition and she also achieved a double clear, again qualifying

for the jump-off against the clock. She was unlucky to dislodge the final fence after putting in an extremely fast

round.

Well done to all and a huge thank you to Gordon for his support and encouragement.

SENIOR BOY’S RUGBY

Another successful season just coming to a close and many thanks to all involved. We welcomed both Eric Callender

(1st Yrs) and Declan O’Brien (juniors) to the coaching staff this year.

The highlights of the year belonged to our seniors who achieved great success by firstly qualifying for the All Ireland

Schools Tournament in Dublin last October and on reaching the Munster schools cup final v Bandon Grammar last

month – where they were unfortunately defeated. Well done to them and the hard work of their coach – George

Blackwell.

We competed at all age levels in our Munster leagues and cups and travelled to Dublin on two occasions to play St.

Columba’s College, Wesley College and King’s Hospital school.

Our annual tour brought us to Liverpool last October. Many thanks to Alan Whisker for all the organisation. Special

congratulations must go to Calum Morrow, Luke Cardy and Andrew Tutty who were selected to represent Munster at

u16 level in the inter- provincials. Also to David Cardy and Henry Cooke (reserve) who represented Munster at u18

level.

Andrew Tutty attained Irish trials at u16 level and we are delighted and congratulate him on his recent selection for

the national team – well done.

We have some excellent talent coming up through the school and with hard work and commitment, will certainly

have the opportunity to attain success into the future.

We are currently getting ready for our annual past pupils match this week and planning for a minor and junior tour to

Edinburgh next October.

A final thank you to George Blackwell, Declan O’Brien, Shane Hanna and Eric Callender for their dedication and

coaching throughout the season.

SIMON BENSON TAKES JAPANESE AWARD

Simon is one of Ms. O’Sullivan’s Japanese Leaving Certificate students

who has a great interest in Japanese culture and language. He com-

peted at the 12th of Japanese Speech Contest in Clock Tower, Depart-

ment of Education in Dublin on 22nd of March and he won the 1st

prize in the category of students who are studying for L.C. Japanese in

the 2nd year. His speech title was “People I like”. He spoke about

John and Hank Green, introducing what they do and how much they

are contributing the world. To be honest, the content was not an easy

choice for this contest because after the speech the candidates had to

stay to answer Judges’ questions. Simon was really cool and calm, and

his answering in Japanese to the judges were perfect. When Ms.

O’Sullivan saw him at the questioning time, she knew that Simon was

going to win!

It was amazing to see a student like Simon who started with Zero Japa-

nese become a brilliant Japanese speaker. Of course he has achieved

this through constant effort and hard work.

Simon san Omedeto!! (Congratulations, Simon)

PTA/STUDENT COUNCIL TABLE QUIZ

The PTA/Student Council table quiz turned out to be a great success. It was carried out on the 13th of March

2014. Admission was €5 for one person and €20 for a table of 4, and we were glad to see a good turnout of

people. People of all ages were welcome.

Mr Griffin was the quiz master on the night and with great enthusiasm he kept the night running smoothly.

There were eight rounds of question which included topics such as music, pictures and general knowledge.

There was fierce competition between tables to claim the prizes which included Easter eggs, biscuits and

more. The student council worked together with the PTA to organise everything such as chairs, tables and

refreshments. Over all control of where people were going and doing was also looked after by the Student

Council. For kids under the age of eight, a different activity was organised. A beetle drive was organised. The

children had to draw body parts of beetles when the number came out on the dice. The children were later on

given the opportunity to watch the movie, ‘Frozen’, until the conclusion of the main table quiz. Towards the

end of night a raffle took place. Members of the Student Council sold the raffle tickets during the quiz at €1

per line. A lot of people thankfully bought raffle tickets and a few lucky winners went home with prizes.

There was a buzz leaving Villiers School that night as the event turned out to be an enjoyable experience for

everyone involved even the not so fortunate people who discovered that their level of general knowledge was

’too general’ to win a prize. We look forward to future events such as this and we predict that they will be just

as fun and successful.

WE LOVE K-POP

What is this?

K-pop is a musical genre which originates from South Korea. Although it comprises all genres of “popular music’’ within South Korea. It is mostly used to describe a modern form of South Korean Pop music. It covers pop ballads, dance-pop, electronic, rock, hip-hop and R&B etc.

In addition to music, K-pop has grown into a popular subculture among teenagers and young adults throughout Asia, resulting in widespread inter-est in the fashion and style of Korean idol groups and singers.

According to a Rolling Stone author, K-Pop is "a mixture of trendy West-ern music and high-energy Japanese pop (J-Pop), which preys on listeners' heads with repeated hooks, sometimes in English. It embraces the genre of fusion with both singing and rap, and emphasizes performance and strong visuals". K-pop can be described as a globalized music; as it is a mixture of Western and European sounds with an Asian flavour of performance. The way these Korean singers perform their songs with synchronized dance moves and complex gestures has increased the popularity of K-pop.

The history of Korean popular music can be traced back to 1885 when an American missionary, Henry Appelzeller started teaching American and British folk songs at a school. These songs were called ‘changga’ in Korean, and they were typically based on a popular Western melody sung with Ko-rean lyrics.

More than 60 boy and girl bands are produced each year in Korea, paving the way for labelling K-pop as a "star factory". Many of these bands disappear after a few hits. Dance is a very im-portant part of K-pop. When combining multiple singers, the singers often switch their positions while singing and dancing by making prompt movements in synchrony.

Interesting fact: There is a recognized concern of K-pop fans turning to obsessive and compulsive behaviour such as stalking and invasion of privacy. These fans are called sasaeng, or "private" fans. These fans are usually young fe-males, around the age of 15 to 17 years old. Some sasaeng fans hire taxis to follow their idols. There are taxi services catering specifically for these fans that are willing to speed after the vans transporting idols. Korean public officials recognize this as a unique but serious concern.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE QUOTES Jennifer Lawrence has become known to us through the gross profiting movie ‘The Hunger

Games’. She has captured the hearts of millions of fans through her loud, funny opinions and hi-

larious actions. (Falling on the stairs while receiving her Oscar). Here we take a look at some of the

most funny and memorable things Jennifer Lawrence has been known to say.

“I wish this was like Mean Girls and I could just break this up and throw it at all of you!” –

referring to ‘Mean Girls’ while accepting her People’s Choice Award.

“Teenagers only have to focus on themselves – it’s not until we get older that we realize that other people

exist.”

“I’m a horrible dancer! I’m like a dad at a prom. I look like Gumby getting electrocuted.”

“I’m the fastest pee-er ever. I’m famous for it.”

“I can see the McDonalds right there. Wait; hold on, I didn’t say fries! I’m seeing you talk and all I’m seeing

is me being mad I didn’t get fries. And you have to remind them about ketchup because they never

include ketchup, you have to ask for it. Cheapskates.”

“This isn’t like an auction, right? You guys aren’t going to take it away?” –Backstage at the Oscars while

holding her trophy-

“I’m sorry that I hit your family. I thought I saw Honey Boo Boo.”

”I hate saying, ‘I like exercising’ — I want to punch people who say that.”

PICK UP LINES FOR MEN AND WOMEN

We endure a lot of hardships throughout our adolescent years, notably exams, peer pressure or struggling in

some cases with relations with friends and family. However, sometimes nothing compares with the struggles

and extreme awkwardness we often have with the opposite sex. Below are the best, most unsuccessful pick-up

lines we found via the internet, bad comedy films and single people:

-You’re actually like a chocolate bar. Half sweet, half nuts.

-I’m not this tall, I’m just sitting on my wallet.

-You’re dad must be a drug dealer, cause you’re a dope.

-If I could rearrange the alphabet, I’d put U and I together.

-There must be an airport nearby, either that or my hearts taking off.

COMPETITION TIME

To all those students who are keen writers and

would consider themselves competitive this may

be the competition for you to enter. All you got

to do is write a short story or poem and send it

into [email protected]. The best

piece of writing will be published in the next is-

sue of Red Sokz! This may not excite everybody

but for those who really have an interest in writ-

ing and would like to have their work admired, it

would be a great opportunity. Who doesn’t like

to be complimented on repeat for their work?

Get writing and sending and hopefully you might

see your work in the next summer issue.
