bottom, so to speak. They will discuss everything from the selection and collection of the wood to the paints used and the carving process from beginning to end. Why Totems? Carl says because he has “always carved” and wanted to “do something big…really big.” Carl was inspired while driving past the Target sign near I81’s Exit 7 in Bristol. Joe’s extraordinary painting ability, woodworking skills & craftsmanship complement Carl’s artistic vision and talent perfectly and the dynamic duo went to work together to create these impressive works. All association members are encouraged to attend the annual meeting and the public is also invited. We are certain that everyone will enjoy and appreciate this interesting talk.

We are sad to report the deaths of four DAA members. Evelyn Lahman, Nancy Topa, Sean O’Sullivan and Joyce Wright. Evelyn Lahman served as Gallery Greeter on the 1st Thursday of each month for a number of years. She was a versatile and talented Fiber Artist. Nancy Topa, a talented Quilter was a long-time volunteer along with her husband Phil. Sean O’Sullivan also served as a Greeter for us in our early years. He was a leader in the Appalachian Poets and Writers Group, a great supporter of the arts and had a long and successful career in theater and television. Joyce Wright was one of the founding members of the Depot Arists Association. She was a talented artist and dedicated volunteer. It was a privilege to know these enthusiastic and talented artists and we are grateful for their friendship. Our thoughts and

prayers are with their families. Mission Statement

The North East Tennessee Plein Air Painters group will present an exhibition titled “The Four Seasons” in our Juried Spotlight Gallery. The exhibit begins Wednesday, September 27 and runs through Saturday, November 18, 2017. The 13 artists representing the group are Donna Bird, Sheryl Daniels, Don Gotterbarn, Janet Hartmann, Monique Carr and Mary Nees from Johnson City, TN, Judy Fitzgerald, Leslie Davis, Brenda Bundrant of Kingsport, TN, JoAnne McDonough from Mount Carmel, TN, Carol Dixon of Gate City, VA, Renee Pitts from Piney Flats, TN and John Youssi of Jonesborough, TN. They will present more than 50 paintings depicting all four glorious seasons painted “en plein air.” Everyone is invited to a Meet-the Artist reception on Saturday, September 30, from 2-4pm. They call themselves “Just Plein Nuts” and the phrase aptly describes this organization of artists that meet casually throughout the year to paint “en plein air.” While not an official organization, no dues, no officers, etc., the

core group consists of about 20 regulars who meet weekly at various Tri-Cities locations to paint the endless supply of interesting subject matter and beautiful scenery that the region offers. A common thread between these artists is that they “seek not only to improve their skills while painting from life, but also to increase awareness and appreciation for the natural beauty of the region” says Leslie Davis, a member of the group. They are passionate about sharing this vision through their work, and see themselves as “unique voices in the campaign to preserve and promote popular local parks and sites frequently visited as well as the lovely but overlooked places that we pass every day without a second glance”. Some of the group’s favorite locations for painting include the Tipton Haynes Historic Sight and Rocky Mount in Johnson City, the Linear Trail and Farmhouse Gallery in Erwin, Eastman Recreational area, Bays Mountain, Allandale Mansion, Cleek Farm, Farmers Market, and Exchange Place in Kingsport, Sycamore Shoals State Park in Elizabethton, Jonesborough’s Mill Creek Park, and the Scott County Golf Course in Gate City just to name a few. The group welcomes artists at any level to join them.

The mission of the Depot Artists Association is to promote and support regional artists at The Arts Depot through working studios and gallery exhibits and to provide educational opportunities in the arts for the community.

VHCC Women’s Chorus: Sat. Dec. 2nd 1:00-2:00 FREE Come enjoy the wonderful festive sounds of this fine ensemble as they perform a variety of Christmas music. For many years,

this has exclusively been a women’s choral group. They have enjoyed having men’s voices with them from time to time but are back to featuring the beauty of female voices uniting in song this season. This group is comprised of students, faculty, staff, high school and community members. It is open to all women that like to sing. Enjoy the Art displays and refreshments while you are listening to the lovely sounds of these ladies. This group is directed by Mary Munsey and accompanied by Chris Yoder.

Studio 1 Nancy Johnson“I’m working on Noah’s Ark. I’m using acrylics, wood, cardboard, rocks, plastic, buttons and lots of found objects all mounted on a board. I’m always trying to add something new and different.”

Studio 2A Joyce Samuel“I’m doing little drawings for a new batch of 6”x 6” canvas’ and miscellaneous sized watercolor wax batik paintings. I love doing these. Look for my 2 upcoming classes here at the depot.”

Studio 2B Jackie Dolpp“I am going back to basics with 300# watercolor paper and transparent w/c. I was using Yupo paper with nice effects. During the festival I did a series of violet paintings using different papers and methods of same photo. I like to play but always return to traditional methods.”

Studio 3A Helen Morgan“I have created a new line of casual table runners. These are multicolored weavings in various color families.”

Studio 3B Steven Reeves, our resident oil painter, has begun the preliminary work for a new portrait commission and notes the process can take many weeks. He is also continuing work on his “social engaged” art series. He is entering “I Still Have Dreams” in the international juried Fletcher Exhibit (pictured) along with “Second Chances”. Both are oil paintings that address serious issues that affect society. Drop by and see his other paintings and newest endeavors.

Studio 5 Sara Reese“Getting Along” is the theme Sara Reese has been working on recently. The series includes whimsical clay animals enjoying their time together – the Lion and Lamb laying together, pigs and elephants with various unlikely critters. Pictured is “Sweet Harmony” a wall piece.

Studio 6 Nancy Garretson“My latest work is a small tapestry titled Tumbling Creek Memories. It is a commission for a friend in Ireland. She took several photos of Tumbling Creek when she visited 2 years ago and wanted a tapestry based on them. She will return to our area in November and will take the piece home in a 25”x15” suitcase. Hope it fits.
