Aloha Royals and Parents & Guardians,

We are fast approaching Spring Break and the start of the 4th quarter. I want to take this time to elabo-rate more on two very im-portant events that will be taking place during the 4th quarter.

On April 11-14, 2016 we will be going through our accreditation process with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). All Hawaii DOE Public School K-12 are re-quired to go through the accreditation process. To ensure school improve-ment, the process directly aligns our Academic Plan. Did you know about ... Cafteteria Incentive

This year, we have re-introduced the Positive Behavior

Incentive System (PBIS) in our cafeteria. Each class can

earn a green (great), yellow (warning) or red (did not

heed warnings) card which reflects the collective behav-

ior of the class while in the cafeteria. The class with the

most green tickets at the end of each quarter earns lunch

on the Royal Roost and Bradda’ Pops.

Mahalo from our Track Coach….

I want to give a huge THANK YOU to all who helped this year

at the two P & R Track Meets. Special thank you to

Ms. Takane, who helped everyday at practice and at both track meets and Mrs. Taniguchi who worked our ‘home base’ at both

track meets. These two individuals also helped with all the pa-

perwork, name tags and schedules. Also a BIG thank you to my

dad, Gary Yanagi for helping with EVERYTHING.

Thank you to our Waiakea Elementary faculty and staff mem-

bers Ms. Hara, Mrs. Hashimoto, Mrs. Sumitani, Mrs. Na-

kano, Mrs. Fujinaka, Mr. Atkins, Mr. Manuia and Mr. Wa-

tanabe with supervision of the students at the track meets.

Also thank you to Warren Dela Cruz (Shyleen & Shayde's

dad) and Mark Gomes (Keona’s dad), two parents who helped at practices and at the track meets.

Parents Corina McLellan (Noah Lee's mom), Melanie Unwin

(Grace Stark's mom), Shannon Tamimi (Zack’s mom) and Je-

rusha Dela Cruz (Shyleen & Shayde’s mom) also helped in the

tent at the track meet. Thank you also to Rocky Maave (Reno

& Aery's dad) and Julian Taifmai (Shauntae's dad) who helped

with setting up or taking down the tents. We also appreciate all

the parents and siblings who spent the day at the track meets

being your child’s #1 cheerleaders.

We thank all of you who spent time with your children at these

two track meets. Your support is so necessary and appreciated.

Without the numerous helping hands we would not be able to

have such a large representation from our school. Safety is a

primary concern, so we are grateful for all the extra “eyes” that

kept our kids safe and out of trouble.

Hope to see you again next year. Once again, THANK YOU.

Todd Yanagi, Vice principal, track coach

Journey Through the Universe

Our Waiakea Royals will be participating in the Jour-

ney Through the Universe (JTTU) program from Feb-

ruary 29 through March 10. During these 2 weeks pre-

senters will be bringing information to students in Kin-

dergarten through 5th grades.

Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade will enter the

Starlab to explore our Hawaiian night skies. Students

in Grades 2 – 5 will have presentations in their class-

rooms.

We are very thankful to Gemini Observatory for

bringing this wonderful program to our school.
