May 2014 Volunteer Appreciation Shady Oaks celebrated National Volunteer Week with a delicious Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on April 26th. The “come and go” format gave volunteers the flexibility to enjoy breakfast at their leisure between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. Volunteers dined on Breakfast Ham Egg Bake, Biscuits and Sausage Cream Gravy, French Toast with Flavored Syrups, Bacon, Apple Bread, Lemon Poppy Seed Bread, Pecan Coffee Cake, Toast, Bagels with Flavored Cream Cheese, and Fresh Fruit Cups served with a variety of beverages. In addition to the delicious meal, each volunteer received an “O-Fish- ial Thank You” (with Goldfish Crackers) as a token of our appreciation and several attendees won door prizes of outdoor plants, apple cake, cinnamon coffee cake, and deco mesh wreaths. Volunteers visited while enjoying their breakfasts and the sound of laughter could be heard through the halls. We continue to be blessed with a large group of volunteers that share their time and talents with the Shady Oaks residents. Assisting with various resident activities and outings, our smiling volunteers are always willing to help. Volunteers assist with church services, bingo, special meal nights, crafts, and much, much more. Deb Jones, Director of Life Enrichment, said, “We appreciate everything our volunteers do for us. There is no way we could do what we do today if it wasn’t for them. We are blessed to have such a caring community, and we thank everyone for that.” A publication of Shady Oaks Care Center Lake City, Iowa Inside this Issue pg. 2 ~ Administrator’s Corner ~ Center Update pg. 3 ~ Church Schedule ~ Photo Corner pg. 4 & 5 ~ Calendar pg. 6 ~ Safety Corner ~ Care Conversations Pg. 7 ~ “It’s an Easter Bonnet Parade!” ~ In Appreciation We’re going Green! ALOHA! I wish that greeting meant we all won a nice, leisurely trip to Hawaii. Wouldn’t it be fun to go to the warm islands for even a couple of days? Yes, indeed! I am ready for warmer weather.

Instead of all traveling to Hawaii, we are privileged to use it as part of our National Nursing Home Week theme, “Living the Aloha Spirit.” In Hawaii, the word “aloha” has a deeper cultural significance than a simple greeting or farewell. In Hawaiian culture it is important to treat yourself and others with aloha, to interact with love and respect and joyfully share life. By applying this spirit of aloha to daily life, the people of Hawaii are encouraged to treat others with deep care, respect and humility, leading to individuals creating a better world. These all fall right in line with the Mission, Vision and Values we live on a daily basis at Shady Oaks!

National Nursing Home Week is May 11-17 this year and we invite you to join us for the many activities that are planned. The week will kick off on Mother’s Day with special refreshments during the afternoon Social Hour. We are looking forward to a Proclamation by the Mayor on Monday morning, the annual 3rd Grade Foster Grandkid carnivals on Wednesday and many other “spectaculars” during the week. Be sure to look at the activity calendar for all of the scheduled events!

I am pleased to welcome Joni Hansen as our new Office Manager as of March 31st. Joni, her husband Rob, and their children Sami and Blayne live in rural Lake City. Joni has done a spectacular job of picking up where things were left off and learning the computer programs and our processes. A big thank you to Colleen, Michelle, Cindy and Amy for the extra time you put in and extra duties you oversaw during the transition! Teamwork is what makes everything flow so well and why I enjoy working here so much, I have a great team!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers out there! As a mother of 4, I appreciate a day dedicated to me to relax and celebrate! Be sure to honor and thank your mother as well for everything she does and has done for you during your life.

Enjoy the month of May and reminisce on those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. May we always remember!

Blessings to you all during this month! ~ Jennifer Blair

Safety Corner Welcome to our first Safety Corner! Now that the weather

is warming up and residents are looking forward to spending more time outdoors, we thought it would be a great time for safety reminders.

Bird Feeders Everyone loves to watch the antics of the birds and

squirrels and resident’s families are more than welcome to bring out bird feeders to place outside the resident’s room windows. Due to health and safety concerns, bird feeders cannot be placed between the building and the sidewalk. Rob and Guy, the maintenance men, are more than happy to assist with the placement of bird feeders on the other side of the sidewalk. This helps keep the outside critters...outside!

Walker Glides Though everyone likes the cute little walker glides, it is

important to make sure they are in good shape so they do not catch on the carpet and rugs throughout the building. When they become worn, they will need to be replaced to ensure the user’s safety.

Sunscreen Some medications have a tendency to increase the effects of

the sun. We ask residents who enjoy basking in the sun to use their sunscreen to prevent painful sunburns.

Care Conversations

Skilled Nursing Care: Fact vs. Myth Today’s Skilled Nursing Care centers: separating fact from fiction. Over time, Skilled Nursing Care centers, like all areas of health care, have advanced in terms of clinical practices,

resident rights, quality improvement, and the overall approach to the needs and wants of residents and families. Yet, even today, many misperceptions about nursing homes persist, professionally called Skilled Nursing Care centers. Separating fact from fiction will help you stay open to all of your care options.

Here are some common myths worth exploring:

Myth: Residents are not visited regularly by family and friends.

Fact: Busy schedules or distance might prevent loved ones from visiting as often as they’d like, but care providers do their best to encourage and facilitate frequent visits or in-person alternatives. Staff members often become surrogate family members and friends to residents.

Myth: Meals are not appetizing. Fact: Home-cooked meals are tough to compete

with, but Skilled Nursing Care centers do their best to provide tasty, nutritious meals. Everyone has different preferences, and low-salt, -fat, -cholesterol, or -sugar restrictions present limitations. Minnie Huster, our Dietary Manager is open to feedback, so discuss any concerns or suggestions you have with her.

For additional information, please contact Amy Smith, Social Services and Admissions, at 712-464-3106.

Real Mothers Real Mothers don’t eat quiche; they don’t

have time to make it. Real Mothers know that their kitchen

utensils are probably in the sandbox. Real Mothers often have sticky floors, filthy

ovens and happy kids. Real Mothers know that dried play dough

doesn’t come out of carpets. Real Mothers don’t want to know what the

vacuum just sucked up. Real Mothers sometimes ask “Why me?” and

get their best answer when a little voice says, “Because I love you best.”

Real Mothers know that a child’s growth is not measured by height or years or grade...it is

marked by the progression of Ma-ma to Mommy to Mom.

What a fun idea it was to host a spring hat contest and include residents as judges! Over the last couple of weeks, teams were formed and each secretly made a decorated hat that represented their department. These were displayed for the residents to enjoy and gaze upon until last Wednesday afternoon, when a contest was held. Each of the ten decorated hats were modeled by a representative who had helped make it, while a bit of history was told of the hat. It was quite a grand affair as residents and guests alike ooh’ed and ahh’ed over the hats. The judges, pictured wearing the winning hats, were: Jeannette Grove, Volunteer Sylvia Streufert, Lavonne Mc Carty and Katy Schrad deliberated and noted down what they liked about each hat as it was paraded by their table. Winners included: 1st place: Environmental Services-Maintenance Team; 2nd place: Therapy Department; 3rd place; Environmental Services- Laundry and Housekeeping, and an Honorable mention to the Administration Team. The most grand hat, although it didn’t win a prize, is being modeled by Amy Smith and is what they call, their “Queen of England” hat! Other pictures include Guy Mitchell wearing the 1st place hat and Beth Ann Larson showing off her team’s 3rd place hat. The 1st place hat included many mini-tool replicas as well as the saying, “Women may not find us handsome, but at least they find us handy!” Not only was the event a great time for the residents, but the time in preparation before proved to be a great team-building activity for the employees. Great job everyone!
