• Vortex Shedding is all around you
• Vortex Shedding in measurement
• Understanding your Applications
• Knowing your options
• Using the sizing software
Where Flow Measurement Meets Innovation…
History of Vortex Shedding Technology
• Da Vinci observed vortex shedding in 1516
• Von Karman provided an empirically determined
formula for it in 1911-1912.
• Allen Rodely & Charlie McMurtry developed this
technology working at Eastech Corp. in the
early 1970’s.
F = v/d x Sf D = shredder bar width
F = vortex frequency
V = inlet velocity,
Sf = Strouhal factor, constant over wide Reynolds # in the measuring range

Vortex Shedding is all around you !
• Flags waving
• Road signs shaking in high winds
• Cloud formations over large land masses

Vortex Shedding in Flow Measurement
• Bluff body induces low pressure pulses (vortices) on
opposite sides
• Piezo electric crystals located on the opposite side of bluff
body to convert pulses into voltage signals
• Voltage signal (pressure pulse) is directly proportional to
volumetric flow rate
• Sensors NEVER come into contact with the fluid

Dual Piezo Technology
One sensor picks up one signal +
noise.
Two sensors pick up two vortex
signals, 180° out of phase + two
noise signals 180° in phase.
Out of phase signal is amplified,
in phase signal is not.

Standard Piping Requirements
Understanding your Applications
Straight Run Piping Requirements Upstream Downstream
One 90º elbow before the meter 10 D 5 D
Two 90º elbows before the meter 15 D 5 D
Two 90º elbows out of plane
before the meter
30 D 5 D
Reduction before the meter 10 D 5 D
Regulator or Valve partially closed
before the meter
30 D 5 D
D is equal to the internal diameter of the pipe.

Benefits for Liquids
Understanding your Applications
• No Moving Parts
• 30 to 1 turndown in most liquids
• Liquids with suspended particals
– Sand, dirt, dust, salt, grains, seeds ect
• Great for Conductive & Non-conductive
Considerations for Liquids
• Non-compressible fluid can have pressure
pulsations. Must be away from pumps.
• Piping requirements
Where Flow Measurement Meets Innovation…
Benefits for Gases
Understanding your Applications
• Wet or Dry Gases
• Meter accuracy is forever constant
• Frequency will not change with density
• Meters will never need recalibration
Considerations for Gases
• Piping requirements
• Min & Max Flow Ranges
Where Flow Measurement Meets Innovation…
Benefits for Steam
Understanding your Applications
• Solid Stainless Steel Construction
• Water Slugs will not damage meter
• Meter is .25% repeatable for application adjusting
• No internal o-rings, seals or gaskets to replace or service.
• A completely maintenance free steam flow meter
• Meters will never need recalibration
Considerations for Steam
• Piping requirements
• Min & Max Flow Ranges

NEW Meter Tagging and Application
Identification
• Each new meter will come equipped with its own
identification tag.
• This tag will show important information about the model of
the vortex flow meter, the application serial number, and the
meter’s flow range.
• All installation manuals will also have a duplicate tag
located on the front cover of each manual.
• End user immediately identify the matching installation
manual with the corresponding vortex flow meter.
