The Atlanta Falcons host the Cincinnati Bengals in the Georgia Dome for the second game of the 2012 preseason on Thursday, August 16. This will be the eleventh time the two clubs have met in the preseason and the fi rst time since 2007. The Falcons hold a 6-4 advantage over the Bengals in the preseason, with Cincinnati beating the Falcons 24-19 in their last matchup in 2007. The Falcons kicked off the preseason with a 31-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens at the Dome. QB Matt Ryan and WR Julio Jones looked sharp in their 2012 debuts as Ryan completed nine of 13 pass attempts for 155 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while Jones hauled in six of those passes for 109 yards, including a seven-yard touch-down. The Bengals topped the New York Jets, 17-6, in their preseason opener. RB Cedrick Peerman scored a pair of touchdowns for Cincinnati, recovering a blocked punt in the endzone and punching in a one-yard touchdown run to lead the Bengals to the victory.

Head Coach Mike Smith preaches the importance of starting fast, both offensive-ly and defensively. Last sea-son, the Falcons were one of the NFL’s best team in terms of scoring on their opening drives and limiting oppo-nent’s scoring chances on their fi rst offensive possessions. In 2011, Atlanta posted a fi rst offensive possession point differential of plus-35, which ranked third in the League.

Last season, Atlanta scored 51 points on their opening drives, including six touchdowns, which was the third highest total in the NFL. Defensively, the Falcons held op-ponents to just 16 points and only one touchdown on their fi rst offensive possessions, which was the third best mark in the NFL.

HEAD COACH

In his fi rst four seasons as the Falcons head coach, Mike Smith has established Atlanta as a sustainable and rel-evant franchise in the NFL. During his tenure in Atlanta, the Falcons have compiled a 43-21 regular season record, which is the fi fth best mark in the NFL during

that time. Atlanta has also tallied four consecutive win-ning seasons (2008-11), and is the only team in the NFC to produce a winning record in each of the last four sea-sons (11-5, 9-7, 13-3, 10-6). Smith’s accomplishments in his fi rst four seasons as Atlanta Falcons head coach are simply unprecedented in team history and are among the best in the NFL when measured against his coaching coun-terparts. He became the fi rst coach in franchise history to produce back-to-back winning seasons (2008-09) and in 2011 Smith became the fi rst coach in team history to lead his team to consecutive playoff appearances (2010-11).

Marvin Lewis enters his 10th season as Bengals head coach, having posted the most wins (69) in franchise his-tory. He has led the team to the postsea-son in two of the last three years. Lewis is the Bengals all-time

leader in seasons as a head coach. Lewis’s owns a 69-74-1 record in regular season and is 0-3 in postseason play. In a win on Oct. 23 of last season at Seattle, Lewis passed Sam Wyche’s franchise record for head-coaching wins. Lewis has risen to third in the NFL in longest current ten-ure with one team, trailing only Philadelphia’s Andy Reid (14th season in 2012) and New England’s Bill Belichick (13 seasons). In the category of most seasons as head coach with any team, Lewis ranks seventh among active coaches. Lewis was named the NFL Coach of the Year in 2009, when the Bengals won the AFC North title and he has led the club to a total of three playoff berths and two division titles. He is the ninth head coach in Bengals history.

COACH SPEAK“We’re going to have to play guys a little bit differently, sim-ply because there is a lot of competition, and we want to give guys an opportunity to go out and compete. We’re going to have to make decisions as a staff, in terms of what games we’re going to play guys with the fi rst group, what guys are going to play with the second group, and what guys are going to play in the third group. There are guys that may be third team as we speak today that are going to get a chance to com-pete for a starting position. In terms to the amount of work, we’re going to keep guys fresh. One of the things I think you’ll notice as you watch is we are doing a few more snaps in our practices. Last year, even though they changed the rules on us, we weren’t able to make the adjustments that we felt like we needed to do in terms of our practice schedule and how we were going to do things. We’ve added snaps in our team periods and our skelly periods so the number of snaps are go-ing up because we’re not having two practices. ”

At the start of his tenure, Blank made a three-point com-mitment to Falcons fans which he maintains today as the leader of the franchise.

Put a perennially-winning product on the fi eld.Under Blank, the Falcons have earned four postseason berths, including a trip to the NFC Championship Game in 2004. In 2010, the Falcons posted an NFC-best 13-3 record and clinched their fi rst NFC

South title since 2004.

Provide a great game day experience. The Falcons and the Georgia World Con-gress Center invested $53 million into enhancements inside and outside of the Georgia Dome, including new HD video boards, suite and club seat renovations,

and red and black paint to give the Dome the look and feel of the home of the Falcons.

Have a winning team off the fi eld and in the community. One of the hallmarks of Blank’s philosophy is giving back to the community. The Fal-cons’ community outreach efforts are led by the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation (AFYF), the largest team-funded founda-

tion in the NFL. Since 2002, the foundation has awarded more than $16 million in grants to more than 700 non-profi t organizations.

BLANK’S COMMITMENTBLANK’S COMMITMENT

Since acquiring the Falcons in 2002, Owner & Chairman Arthur M. Blank has raised the bar and level of expec-tations for the Falcons in construct-ing a talented and creative team to lead his club both on and off the fi eld. In 2008, Blank looked to a rookie trio to help rebuild his franchise hiring Patriots Director of College Scouting Thomas Dimitroff as his new General Manager, Jaguars’ Defensive Coordinator Mike Smith as his Head Coach and approving the selection of Boston College quarter-back Matt Ryan with the third overall pick in the draft.

In the four seasons since bringing in Dimitroff, Smith and Ryan, the Falcons have gone 43-21, which is the fi fth-best record in the NFL. Atlanta has also posted four consecutive winning seasons and earned back-to-back playoff berths for the fi rst time in franchise history.

Under Blank, the Falcons have posted a 87-72-1 record and a .547 winning percenage, better than the .394 winning percentage that the franchise posted in the 35 years prior to Blank’s purchase of the team.

MAN BEHIND THE CURTAINMAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN

Since 2008, the Falcons have a 26-6 record at the Georgia Dome. Currently, the Falcons only trail the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens for the NFL’s best home re-cord over the last four seasons.

NO PLACE LIKE DOMENO PLACE LIKE DOME

Since Blank purchased the team in 2002, the Falcons have sold out 78 of their last 80 home games, including 32 in-a-row from 2008-2011, and from 2002 to 2007, the Fal-cons sold out 43 straight games. The incredible support that fans have shown the team during Blank’s tenure has helped the Falcons to a 50-30 record at the Georgia Dome and Atlanta’s .625 winning percentage at home ranks tied for eighth in the NFL during that time.

RAVE REVIEWS“Arthur Blank clearly got it right when he hired Thomas Dimi-troff and Mike Smith in 2008. The tandem is bright, energetic and forward-thinking when it comes to physical and mental conditioning, and no other general manager/head coach combination has been more aggressive when applying to-day’s technology toward tomorrow’s success. With Dimitroff and Smith behind the wheel, the Falcons are well on their way to becoming one of the NFL’s model franchises.”

- Jim Trotter, Sports Illustrated National NFL writer.

Earlier this year, the Falcons put a new link in the connect-ing chain with their fans by introducing Rise Up Atlanta, a partnership with Hands On Atlanta en-couraging volunteerism across the city.

“Rise Up Atlanta extends the Falcons’ mantra of the last two seasons to rising up in the community to make Atlanta a better place to live,” Blank noted. “One of our core values is giving back to the community and we wanted to provide our fans, as members of the Falcons family, with a conve-nient vehicle to join us in helping others.”

Since 2008, Atlanta ranks second in the NFL in draft retention as 81.3 percent of the club’s selections remain on the team. Falcons general manager Thomas Dimi-troff was named the 2012 Jack Horrigan Award winner by the Professional Football Writers of America. The Horrigan Award is given annually to the League or club offi -cial for his or her qualities and professional style in helping the pro football writers do their job.

Dimitroff is the 39th winner of the Horrigan Award and is the fi rst NFL general manager to receive the honor since 2006. He is third member of the Falcons organization to earn the honor from PFWA.

The award is named for Horrigan, who was a sportswriter for UPI and the Buffalo Evening News, public relations director for the American Football League (1963-66) and vice president of public relations for the Buffalo Bills (1966-73).

HONOR ROLLHONOR ROLL

Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff has been named Executive of the Year by Sporting News two times during his four seasons in Atlanta.

Since 2008, Dimitroff has selected fran-chise cornerstones like QB Matt Ryan, WR Julio Jones, LB Sean Weatherspoon, LT Sam Baker, S Thomas DeCoud and S William Moore through the draft, and added key free agents like RB Michael Turner, TE Tony Gonzalez, CB Asante Samuel and CB Dunta Robinson to shore up various positions.

The moves made by Dimitroff coupled with the on-fi eld coaching of Mike Smith have been the catalysts for the Falcons emergence and consistency over the past four seasons.

MAN WITH A PLANMAN WITH A PLAN

In three seasons as the Falcons General Manager, Thomas Dimitroff re-worked the roster to feature 19 new start-ers from the 2007 campaign. With the Draft being a key to his philosophy, it comes as no surprise that 24 of the 31 players Dimitroff selected between 2008-11 have seen game action and 16 have started games. In all, 27 rookies have been active on game day since 2008.

Starting fast and fi nishing strong has been a staple of Smith’s teams during his time in Atlanta. This zoom focus has seen the Falcons post a 34-9 record in games where they score fi rst. At-lanta also owns a 33-1 mark in games where the Birds hold the lead at the start of the fourth quarter. Since 2008, the Falcons lead the League in points scored on their fi rst offensive possession. Atlanta has totaled 173 points in 64 games, including 51 points in 2011.

While the Falcons have been one of the fastest starting teams in the NFL over the last four seasons, they have also been among the League’s best in closing out the fi rst half and the game. Since 2008, the Fal-cons rank sixth in the NFL with 80 points on 77 possessions in the fi nal two minutes of either half, including 19 points in 24 possessions in two-minute situations in 2011.

Despite struggling in two-min-ute situations in 2008, the Fal-cons defense has been impres-sive in closing out halves and games in the last four seasons. The Birds rank second in the League, allowing just 17 points in 53 possessions, beginning in the fi nal two minutes of either half during that time span. In 2011, Atlanta allowed just three points inside two minutes. The three points allowed in Week 11 were the fi rst points the Birds allowed since Week 13 of 2010 in two minute situations.

the Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator from 2007 to 2011. Last Season, Koetter led an offense that saw RB Maurice Jones-Drew lead the NFL in rushing with 1,606 rushing yards on 343 carries. In fi ve seasons in Jackson-ville, Koetter coached four different players to six Pro Bowl selections, including Jones-Drew who has earned three trips to the Pro Bowl.

Prior to arriving in Jacksonville, Koetter led Arizona State to four bowl games in his six seasons as head coach and fi nished with a 40-34 record. He also served as offensive coordinator and helped the Sun Devils average nearly 30 points per game over six seasons, and the team was ranked in the top 20 in the nation in passing offense in fi ve of his six seasons.

Koetter also spent three seasons as head coach at Boise State University where he compiled a 26-10 mark and two consecutive bowl victories. He was a two-time Big West Coach of the Year honoree and two-time conference champion.

His defense also produced 41 sacks, which ranked tied for 10th in the League and allowed the sixth fewest points per game at 19.6. The Dolphins also ranked seventh in third-down percentage (33.8) and sixth in red zone defense.

In 2010, Nolan’s defense ranked among the League’s top ten in overall defense, pass defense and run defense, and was one of just fi ve units in the League to accomplish that feat. Nolan joined Miami after spending the 2009 season as the defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos. On day one of the 2011 NFL Draft, the Falcons traded up from the 27th spot to sixth overall to select Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones. In 13 games, Jones made a lasting impression rank-ing second among rookies with 959 yards on 54 catches and leading all fi rst-year receivers with eight touchdowns despite missing three games.

• Jones posted back-to-back 100-yard games at Tampa Bay in Week 3 and at Seattle in Week 4. He is the fi rst Falcons rookie since Alfred Jenkins in 1975 to accom-plish that feat and the fi rst NFL rookie to do so since DeSean Jackson in 2008.

• Jones became the fi rst Falcons rookie to record 11 re-ceptions in a game when he posted 11 catches for 127 yards at Seattle in Week 4. The last NFL rookie to post 11-or-more catches in a game was Denver’s Eddie Royal in 2008.

Jones posted the best season by a Falcons rookie receiver after notching 54 receptions for 959 yards and eight touchdowns. He recorded more yards and touchdowns than any Falcons rookie before him and only Shawn Col-lins caught more passes in his fi rst season when he pulled down 58 balls in 1989.

In 2011, the Falcons of-fense was once again led by the three-pronged attack of QB Matt Ryan under center, RB Michael Turner in the

backfi eld and WR Roddy White down the fi eld. Ryan set a franchise record with 4,177 passing yards, while Turner rushed for over 1,300 yards for the second straight season and White logged over 1,000 receiving yards for the fi fth straight season.

2011 marked the seventh time in franchise history that the Birds posted the 3k-1k-1k trifecta. Ryan, Turner and White are the fi rst trio to accomplish the feat three different times. Ryan’s 4,177 passing yards, marked only the second time in club history the team has had a 4,000 yard passer, 1,000 yard rusher and 1,000 receiver. Atlanta also accom-plished the feat in 1995.
