All these elements have come together in perfect unison in a Twenty20 Charity Cricket match between teams from the City of Ryde and Hornsby Shire councils. The City of Ryde ‘All Rounders’ and the Hornsby ‘Hornadoes’ will pad up and go head to head in a ‘friendly’ charity cricket match to raise extra funds for the communities affected by the devastating Blue Mountains Bushfires. Already a very respectable $8,500 has been raised through community efforts, with a further $5,000+ to be donated for the T20 Charity Cricket Match. It’s all about ‘communities helping communities’, so come along and enjoy a sausage sizzle, show your support whilst having fun in a good cause and see which Council team wins. Volunteer opportunities In my role as Mayor I come into contact with people from all walks of life, but none impress me more than those who make up our army of volunteers. They go about their business quietly and with dedication, giving their time and expertise freely – bringing friendship and a helping hand to individuals and organisations. Their beneficiaries include children, young people, families, the aged, the lonely and the disadvantaged. Volunteers really are the unsung heroes of our community. I salute them. If you have some spare time and would like to get involved, here are two groups who need your help. Motor Neurone Disease NSW needs volunteers to help raise money and awareness during MND Awareness Week (May 4–10).
