With the help and support of our Board of Directors, we have worked hard to ensure that our Chamber continues to provide the business community with the resources and tools it needs to succeed.

As we look ahead to the remain-der of the year, I see the theme as focusing on strengthening partner-ships and our relationships with our members. Our focus on developing Commerce is simple.  We need our Chamber members to have finan-cial success.  The better you do, the better we do. I’m excited about the many new possibilities that lie ahead.

I would like to share a few of these partnerships and key improvements for 2013:

We have partnered with Garden City Community College to improve community resources for workforce development, while promoting train-ing opportunities that include, CDL, food safety, computer skills, market-ing, financial management.

We are also honored to support teachers in both Garden City Public Schools and Holcomb Public Schools by holding the Crystal Apple Awards. This award recognizes three outstanding teachers in Finney County each year.

This year we have City and County Representation on the board from both entities. This allows consistent communication between the groups on business related information; business requests, legislative issues and other business related informa-tion.

We have strengthen our relation-ships with Finney County Economic Development, CVB and Downtown Vision – We have participated in a cooperative body of work that in-cludes a shop Garden City campaign using several forms of marketing including web site, direct mail, newsletters, radio, tv, newspaper and more.

Strengthening our relationships with members has been paved by “going back to the basics”, this is done by staff or volunteers visiting businesses. Your feedback has been invaluable in shaping our agenda for the rest of this year and the next year. Your information is vital to measuring the Chamber’s effective-ness in achieving your goals.

We are proud to announce an Expanded Web Site, which will include a member section where members can update their own data, post photos and video, add a logo and other features not current-ly available on the current site.

We are strengthening our advocacy efforts for businesses by continuing to host a Legislative Caucus to give you a platform to share your views and concerns prior to the session along with monthly Legislative Coffee’s to give members an oppor-tunity to voice your opinion and views during session.

Furthermore, by developing a Legislative Agenda that is the blue-print for monitoring and support-ing legislation during the session. Whether you’re an emerging small business experiencing growing pains or a large global organization, we want you to think of us as your proactive business partner.

We look forward to continued success through the end of this year and into the next. Thank you for your continued support and in-volvement in the Chamber pro-grams, activities and events.

The Focus of the Chamber

The Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recently appointed Mr. Brian Weber to the 16-person panel.

“Brian Weber is a wonderful addition to the Chamber board., said Steve Dyer, Chamber presi-dent. “He is a local business owner, experienced board member and understands first hand what hap-pens in Topeka. I am very excited to welcome Brian tot he board.”

In April, Weber announced his resignation from the Kansas House of Representatives to focus more time on the family business at Weber Refrigeration and to his wife and young daughter. Brian and his wife Alicia recently moved to Garden City after living several years in the Dodge City area.

Weber is a 2005 graduate of Newman University where he majored in History and received a minor in political science. In 2009, Brian was awarded his Masters degree from Ft. Hays State University. In 2011, he was elect-ed to the Kansas House of Rep-resentatives overseeing District 119. During his time in Topeka, Brian served as the House Majority Whip, Social Services Budget Chair, Health Committee Chair and was the freshman GOP Caucus Chair.

While in Dodge City, Brian served as a city commissioner from 2008-2010. He also previously served as a member of the board of directors for the Dodge City and Liberal Chambers of Commerce.

Weber replaces Jarrod Stoppel, USD 457, who resigned from the Chamber board in July.

Weber to Join Chamber board

On Thursday, August 1, 2013, over 500 chamber members and sponsors turned out for the Annual Chamber of Commerce awards banquet at Garden City High School.

2013 marks the 125th anniver-sary of the Chamber, which was founded in 1888 and currently has over 430 local businesses in its membership. To help cele-brate significant milestone, the Chamber selected the theme “Looking Back...Moving For-ward” as the theme of the event to pay homage to the changes and successes within the busi-ness community of Finney County. The banquet, hosted by presenting sponsor Tyson Fresh Foods, featured a steak dinner catered by the Clarion Inn.

For the 30th year, the Cham-ber presented the 2012 Award of Merit to Mrs. Kathy Diehl, Vice President at American State Bank, for her outstanding commitment and support of the Chamber. Diehl is a current Chamber ambassador and has served on the Chamber board of directors and has also volun-teered with numerous Chamber and community events.

The Chamber also presented the annual Ambassador of the Year award to Mr. Scott Bauer, who was recognized for his volunteer work with the Chamber Ambassadors in 2012. Bauer joined the Ambassador team in 2012 and is slated to become the Ambassador chairperson in 2014.

Following the banquet, guests were treated to the “Classic Comedy Live” show with comedians Dick Hardwick, Jack Mayberry and Mrs. Carol Hughes inside the high school auditorium.

The Chamber plans to announce sponsorship, ticket and entertainment information for the 2014 banquet soon.
