ESC Approach

At ESC, we focus on fluency and communication so that you become a confident user of English. All classes are interactive, with group and pair work, presentations, communicative activities, and authentic materials such as newspaper articles, music, literature, and textbooks. Teachers are professional and energetic, and classes are lively and stimulating.

'English Only' Policy

At ESC, we want you to succeed. We believe that the fastest way to learn English is to speak and listen to English as much as possible. Also, you can make friends more quickly at the school if you are speaking in English. For these reasons, we have an ‘English only’ policy at the school.

Your First Day

When you arrive at ESC, you will start your first day with a school orientation. This is followed by a placement test and oral interview to assess the level of your English knowledge and skills. You will meet with the Registrar to discuss your academic goals, and to create your personalized class schedule.

Monthly Testing and Report Cards

At the end of each month, you will complete a level test that measures your improvement, and you will receive a report card that shows you an evaluation of your skills. Then you may advance to the next level of study at the school. Most students complete one level every two months.

ESC gives students expert preparation for the iBT TOEFL and IELTS exams. Students learn test-taking strategies and tips that help them succeed on the exams; plus, they take weekly practice tests to measure their ongoing improvement.

iBTTOEFLExamPreparationProgramThe iBT TOEFL exam measures how students use and understand English in university and college situations. Our iBT TOEFL Exam Preparation program is fast-paced and demanding and covers the four skills that are measured on the exam: writing, speaking, reading, and listening. The focus of the iBT TOEFL exam is effective communication, so this program helps students improve and perfect their communication abilities.

IELTSExamPreparationProgramOur IELTS Exam Preparation program is designed to prepare students to take the Academic IELTS exam in order to enter a higher-education institute. This program familiarizes students with the content, style, and format of the four modules of the exam (Academic Writing, Academic Reading, Speaking, and Listening) and prepares students for college and university through the study of formal writing and academic vocabulary and through helping students to formulate clear and coherent opinions during class discussion and debate.

Knowing how to adapt to new cultural settings can be challenging for anyone. For students hoping to study and perhaps work abroad, learning how to integrate into a new educational or work community is the main challenge. In UCTP, we recognize this challenge and understand that students need to experience the situations and learn the skills that will prepare them for success in the real world. For this reason, we have developed a strong curriculum that reflects the needs of students heading into a variety of fields and disciplines.

In addition to such a curriculum, we have great instructors. UCTP instructors genuinely care about the success of their students and are always working to develop new strategies that enable students to perform at their best. Our instructors are committed to helping students integrate into the academic culture of U.S. and Canadian post-secondary institutions. In fact, we have helped hundreds to graduate from universities and colleges from all over the U.S. and Canada—hundreds who are now working in their fields or who have continued on to even higher education.

To sum it up, to those considering post-secondary studies in the U.S. or Canada, UCTP is committed to helping you achieve your goals. We hope to see you soon.

AcademicFoundationsThe Academic Foundations Course (AF) provides students with a foundation in the academic skills necessary for entry into the University College Transfer program for Pathways. Throughout the course the students will focus on grammar accuracy, strategies to expand vocabulary, reading texts, discussions, and critical thinking techniques. A general letter grade will be assigned to students at the end of the course which can grant entry into the intermediate program UCTP-prep. Academic Foundations is invaluable to all students looking for an introduction to academic skills and in particular for developing strategies for grammar accuracy in context.

UCTPPrepUCTP Prep is designed for intermediate-level students wishing to enter UCTP, but whose level is not high enough. This course focuses on teaching students (who are ESC Level 7) the essential, foundational skills necessary to succeed in UCTP. UCTP-Prep students get a headstart on developing their proficiency in academic writing (which includes paraphrasing, summarizing, essay structure, and grammar), academic presentations, group discussions, and situations requiring precise listening comprehension.

EnglishforAcademicPurposes(UCTP)English for Academic Purposes (UCTP) is a 12-week, advanced-level program (ESC Levels 8 - 10) that is designed for students planning to attend university or college in the U.S. or Canada as well as for students seeking to learn English at a higher academic level.

UCTP has been specifically designed to help students excel in the following areas:

iBTTOEFL/IELTSSCORE

UCTPADMISSIONTEST UCTPPREP

Students wishing to enter UCTP directly (without an iBT TOEFL or IELTS score) must take the UCTP admission test. This test consists of two parts: a multiple-choice section worth 40% of the overall score and an essay-writing section worth 60% of the overall score.

Students must achieve a total score of 75% or higher in order to enter UCTP.

The grading for entry into UCTP through UCTP Prep is derived from the cumulative grade of class tests, writing assignments, presentations, participation, and attendance.Students must achieve a cumulative grade of 75% or higher in order to enter UCTP.

If a student earns less than the required 75% in his or her first 4-week term, the student has the option of taking a second 4-week term. In this case, the grading for entry into UCTP will be derived from the sum of the first and second terms (each of which, in other words, will be worth 50%).50% of first term + 50% of second term = your final grade (which must be 75% or higher in order to enter UCTP)

*Students will be allowed to take up to 3 terms to achieve entry into UCTP

Accommodations

HomestayProgramMany students at the English School of Canada participate in our Homestay Program. Homestay gives you the chance to live with a Canadian family during your stay in Toronto so that you can practice your English language skills at home. You will also share in family activities and learn more about Canadian culture and social customs.

Our homestay families are carefully selected to provide our students with a safe, comfortable, and friendly living environment. Your homestay will be conveniently located within 30 minutes of the school. At your homestay, you will have a private single room with a bed, desk, and dresser, and fresh linen and towels each week. You will also eat together with the family, with the choice of 2 or 3 meals per day. Our Homestay Program is recommended for students during their first one to three months in Canada.

UniversityResidenceAccommodation(May to September Only)

Living in a university residence is another option for students. Students live at the University of Toronto, the largest university in Canada, situated in the centre of downtown Toronto. Residence life gives students the opportunity to live and interact with university students, enjoy more independence, and make new friends.

Airport Pick-up Service

When you arrive in Toronto, it's nice to be met by a friendly face at the airport. If you choose our Airport Pick-up Service, we will meet you at the airport and bring you safely to your accommodations in Toronto. Look for the ESC staff member holding a sign with your name on it at the airport, and then come and say hello!

Beyond the Classroom

At the English School of Canada, we provide our students with a great selection of after-school workshops, clubs, activities, trips, and tours. You will have fun, make friends, and try new things by participating. Each month, there is a new events calendar that you can check out; all events are optional, so you can sign up for any and all of the ones that interest you.

StudentServicesTeamThe Student Services Team is responsible for making your stay at the English School of Canada a comfortable and enjoyable experience. From after-school workshops to school picnics, our staff plan events to make sure that you keep learning and have fun even after your classes. If you need to open a bank account, plan a trip, find an apartment, or just talk, a member of our staff is always there for you.

After-SchoolWorkshopsandClubsTry a yoga class or a shiatsu massage workshop, or maybe join the photography club or the volunteer club and do community service in Toronto.

SportsPlay volleyball on the beach, join the soccer team, go canoeing on Lake Ontario, or rollerblade through High Park. In winter, join us for skiing or snowboarding in Collingwood. Don't worry if you don't know how—we’ll teach you!

ActivitiesVisit a museum, go to a club on College Street, or have a picnic with us on Centre Island. If professional sports are more your style, then come with us to an NBA, NHL, or MLB game, and cheer Toronto on!
