1. About The Western Australian Flying Disc Association

It is an incorporated association for flying disc sports in Western Australia. Its definition, objectives and overriding rules are contained in its constitution. The primary objectives are repeated here:

To promote interest and growth in Flying Disc play

To actively promote a spirit of goodwill and friendship for all people involved in the activities of Flying Disc play

To make the community and all governments aware of the benefits of Flying Disc play as an outdoor leisure activity and as a sport

To assist in the promotion and running of local Flying Disc clubs

To conduct state championships annually and other tournaments as deemed necessary

To do all things and acts conducive to the furtherance of the objects and interests of the Association

To continue affiliation to the National governing body, being the Australian Flying Disc Association Incorporated

The branding "WA Ultimate" refers to the flying disc sport, Ultimate. The association accepts the responsibility to

develop Ultimate at all levels across WA. This includes governance and sport development including player,

administrator and coaching pathways.

This Annual Report has been prepared for the Term of Office of the 2013/14 Western Australian Flying Disc Association, Incorporated (WAFDA) Committee. This Term of Office is concurrent with the WAFDA Financial Year running from 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2014

1.1 WAFDA Executive Committee Responsibilities

1.1. The WAFDA constitution makes the Executive Committee responsible for all matters regarding the

management of the WAFDA and defines its constitutional responsibilities in addition to those in the

Western Australian Associations Incorporation Act (1987).

1.2. The WAFDA committee has the power to exercise all the powers of the organisation except those powers

that the Act or Constitution requires to be exercised in a General Meeting.

1.3. The WAFDA Executive Committee's rights and responsibilities are further defined by all of the current

policies of the association.

1.4. The WAFDA committee should include and/or develop the following skills:

2. President’s Report

Kendall Thorn

2013/2014 has been an exciting year for Ultimate in WA as it saw the election of new executive and general committee members which has led to a significant restructuring of the Associations Governance. The aim of which has been to streamline the ongoing operations of the organisation whilst maintaining the focus on introducing new players to Ultimate and developing the talent we currently have. This has already had a noticeable impact with WAFDA membership reaching 780 players an increase of 14% on 2012. In addition to this there has been a continued focus on the development of the sport in new regional areas of WA, with Esperance, Karratha and Broome offering regular playing opportunities and working towards becoming incorporated clubs. The Perth Ultimate League continued to expand at UWA Sports Park with additional leagues being held in Riverton, Yokine, UWA Campus and Bunbury. The Association also employed a Youth and Inclusion Officer on a part‐time contract in 2013 and has already reaped considerable benefit with regards to our reach into secondary school sports programs. Diversity remains a major topic in the Ultimate landscape and the Association has made significant progress in increasing women’s interest in the sport as well as progressing this talent through events such as women’s development days. The AGM in 2013 saw many changes to the structure and personnel of the WAFDA committee. There was a complete change in the Executive Committee with Kendall Thorn (President), Lauren Hoskins (Treasurer) and Mary‐Jane Rigby (Secretary) taking the reins. The Association would like to thank the outgoing committee of Ellen Shackles, Geri Viros and Julie Hardt for their service over the years. The new executive spent much of their time restructuring the Association to better serve the needs of their clients (Ultimate Players in WA) and their employees. This restructure saw the creation of three new Sub‐Executive Director Positions with focuses on Development, Events and High Performance. These three positions were filled by Sarah Brereton, Glen Fowles and Jason Carr respectively. With these three experienced Ultimate administrators on board, the Association believes that more focus can be placed on core projects, further enhancing the Associations deliverables. The Committee also welcomed an unprecedented number of new generalmembers with Jed Yu, Annie Jessop, Tamsin Hearne, Jenaya Shepherd, Eugene Liew, David Tran, Ashvin Nair and Rachel Deluca joining the team. Finally the Association would also like to thank the League Directors for 2013, Peter Rice, Glen Fowles, Piers Truter and Sarah Rice

The WA Flying Disc Association has signed the updated Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the AFDA. This revised MoU between the National Sports Organisation, Australian Flying Disc Association Inc. (the "AFDA") and its affiliated incorporated state and territory state sporting associations (SSA) seeks to clarify how responsibilities and powers are to be shared between the two top levels of governance of flying disc sports in Australia.

A newly develop Governance charter has been developed. The purpose of this Board Governance Charter is to establish an effective governance framework for WAFDA to promote a consistent standard of corporate governance practice that promotes sound and prudent management in the interests of all stakeholders. The Charter sets out the responsibilities of the WAFDA Board as well as the key protocols for the operation of the Board.

I would like to acknowledge all of the work done by our Development Officer, Anna Haynes and Youth and Inclusion Officer, Kyal Oh in 2013. Anna and Kyal have worked tirelessly to help raise the profile of Ultimate within the Department of Sport and Recreation, in schools and the wider community. Both Anna and Kyal have been on several trips to remote areas of WA to run Ultimate sessions for local young people.




A big thank you to all our members, clubs, coaches, volunteers, league directors, employees and committee members and supporters for all of the work they did to make 2013 such a successful year for WAFDA. We look forward to the next election cycle there will be a focus on: Employee relations and governance, clubs policy, club development and of course Perth will host the 2015 Australian Ultimate Championships at UWA Sports Park from April 24‐27 inclusive. 3. Financial Report

Lauren Hoskins

The 2013‐14 WA Flying Disc Association Executive Committee began the financial year with a total of $22,008 in the bank. The financial year is not yet finished, but there is currently a total of $3,804.14 in the bank account. So far a loss of approximately $19, 732.07 with the deadline of PUL50’s league fees due to come in before the 11th of June. After upcoming bills are paid, we predict to finish the financial year with approximately $7,000 in the bank.

Over the course of this year WAFDA received a grant of $28,000 from the DSR as a Profile 1

sport, and $1000 from the AFDA to go towards a High School Championships. All other

revenue was derived from League fees, coaching clinics at schools, disc/equipment/merchandise

sales and tournament hosting fees. The WAFDA did not receive any income from

hosting a national tournament as it did in 2012‐13, and also did not receive the $13 000 ICT

Grant it received in the previous financial year, but in fact was required to pay out the remaining

$2400 still owing to our website developer from the grant. In addition to notable increases in both field hire and AFDA event fees, the WAFDA’s greatest expenses this year were the 2 paid employees: our Development Officer, Anna Haynes, for 30 hours per week, and our Youth and Inclusions Officer, Kyal Oh, for 15 hours per fortnight. The costs associated with these employees include: Wages, Superannuation and Tax. Despite being our being our largest expense, we feel that these costs are easily justifiable because they contribute to not only the current existence of the state sporting association, but also the future growth in skill level, player numbers and revenue streams.

Our Development Officer manages the day to running of the business including

administration, banking, applying for grants, marketing, including keep our website and social

media channels up to date as well as liaising with key stakeholders such as the DSR and

managing the committee’s progress outlined in the annual Operational Plan. In addition to this

the Development Officer also provides support directly to the WA Ultimate community assisting

clubs becoming affiliated and providing other assistance where possible, running the Level 1

coaching clinics and assisting members applying for financial assistance from relevant local

government bodies. All duties are crucial to the existence and growth of the WA Flying Disc

Association.

Our Youth and Inclusion officer is responsible for developing and building a network of

contacts at schools to approach to sell coaching clinics with the students. The coaching sessions

result in a bank of future players that will not only represent WA at Youth Nationals next

weekend and in future years, but these students/developing players will also flow into existing clubs

and leagues, building player numbers. Coaching these students and teachers has also lead to the

development of one successful Youth weekend coaching clinic that was held, and has opened up

the opportunity for more.

Currently the Youth and Inclusion project does not generate a profit financially, but the Executive team feels it is an important part of the future growth of player numbers within the state, as well as providing young players with the basic skills development that will lead to future high performance players. The goal for early 2015 is to set up a separate Youth League which will in turn become its own new source of revenue for WAFDA.




In October 2013 upon completion of the annual Budget, it became apparent that only 3 lots of league fees were due to fall within the calendar year due to the “12 weeks on, 2 weeks off”

format. A decision was made to change the league format to a more sustainable “11 weeks on, 1 week off” format, thus ensuring every financial year moving forward would receive 4 lots of

league fees.

Early 2014, a revenue forecast was performed which highlighted a substantial shortfall in the projected income versus ongoing outgoing expenses. Immediate action was taken to review

the league product and pricing structure, which resulted in the opportunity for players to participate in multiple league products and also a reasonable increase in league fees across the

board. This change had immediate success has resulted in just enough additional revenue to cover our expenses in the gap between incomes received from PUL49 and PUL50. Going forward the

changes should result in a situation where the league fees completely cover the costs associated with hosting the league and the cost of our Development Officer, and the DSR grant is being used to supplement our Youth and Inclusion project.

The WAFDA also applied for a Healthway Sponsorship Grant and an additional DSR grant to assist funding the Youth Development Project. The outcome of both applications has not yet been determined but we hope to support the future committee with their benefits. Next financial year Perth has been selected to host the Australian Ultimate Championships, which under the right guidance can present an opportunity to generate additional revenue for the state as well.

It is hoped that eventually in future the Association can save enough money invest in a

clubhouse or similar for the benefit of our members.

4. Administration & Governance

Committee Meetings In addition to an annual planning meeting the WAFDA also conducts monthly meetings as required by the constitution. Monthly reviews of the current Operation Plan and Strategic Plan are conducted and all business relating to the Association is recorded. Communications The WAFDA is committed to improving

communication to our members, sponsors and

stakeholders.

relating to Association activities, the website

continues to be a vital communication tool and is

constantly updated with current and relevant

news. Our new website launched this year,

producing a contemporary view of our

Association’s online presence and a more user

friendly communication and information portal.

“Ultimatum” is the official newsletter for the Association. Issues are submitted electronically via the WA Ultimate electronic distribution list and are also available for download from the Association website. Social Media With the increase in social media avenues to promote activities, reach a wider audience and stay up to date, it is recognised that our Facebook and Twitter portals are an effective tool for communication with members and non‐members alike. The WA Ultimate YouTube channel launched on July 8th 2013.




5. Development Officer Report

Anna Haynes

The original intention of this development position was to increase the number of people playing Ultimate in WA by

increasing the awareness of flying disc sports in the wider community, provide in‐school coaching sessions, running

coaching courses, expanding support in regional areas and providing administrative support to the Association’s key

volunteers. As this role develops, changes are inevitable and as an organisation we strive to improve our new business

structure. In just over two years we have gone from being 100% volunteer driven to now having two employees and a

head office. In 5 short years our funding with the Department of Sport and Recreation has risen from $6000 to $28

000.00 with rapid our growth and our reach across WA improves every day.

One of the most important external relationships involves liaising with the Department of Sport and Recreation,

Preparing reports to the Department of Sport and Recreation each quarter relating to our Operational and Strategic

targets are all part of the administration hub that is WA Ultimate.

Launching the NEW WA Ultimate Website

After a year of design, redesign and testing we are pleased to have launched our new website. HUGE thanks to all who

made this possible. Matt Hill for design and template building, Geri Daube, Lauren Hoskins and Hugh Osborne for initial

design testing and feedback, Kyal Oh for assisting me with data entry, additional design and Steve Baker for training and

behind the scenes technical work.

This new website was made possible with financial support from the Department of Sport and Recreation's Information,

Communication and Technology Funding Grant.

Club Support & Regional Development

In August 2013 we were successful in attaining funding to visit one of our newer regional centres, Broome. I was able to

spend a week up in Broome running school clinics and working with the Broome Ultimate Club volunteers as they hosted

their first tournament on the world famous Cable Beach. The club went on to host their second hat tournament in June

2014 and once again put on a brilliant event over two days in sunny Broome.

In May 2014 Bunbury’s “Mooovin’ the Groove” event saw a team from Esperance attend their first WA tournament.

Making for a great showcase of regional Ultimate and a unique opportunity to meet folks well out of the metropolitan

scene.

As opportunities arise I am able to share and assist with grant applications for local and regional grants. The once off

$500 club equipment grant has been successful for Broome Ultimate Club, Mandurah Ultimate Club and PRIMAL

Ultimate Club so far. To assist with further grant applications I have also been able to help incorporated clubs apply for

the ABNs required to support their applications and seek further external funding.




Coaching

Two AFDA Level 1 Coaching Courses were held this year at

Murdoch University. This course is recognised by the Australian

Sports Commission’s National Coach Accreditation Scheme and

involves both theory and practical requirements. In March we

ran a course for 43 Murdoch University Bachelor of Science and

Education students as part of their degree requirements then in

the May course we added another new accredited coaches

taking our new total now to 115.

As the demand increases for in‐school Ultimate clinics so does

our need for casual coaches. We rely on trustworthy,

enthusiastic and skilled coaches to assist myself and Kyal meet the needs of school based programs for Ultimate. I would

like to thank Annie Jessop, Jack Morris, Jaxon Botje, Sam Dickson, Matt Borowski, Matt Lambert, Quinlan Oh and Sam

Francoise for all their valuable assistance over the past year in this area.

Communications

The majority of my administrative tasks revolve around communications. Keeping the website updated, preparing the

monthly e‐newsletter and posting information to our social media sites to ensure our members are well informed and

that achievements of this great Association are recorded and shared.

Preparing reports to the Department of Sport and Recreation each quarter relating to our Operational and Strategic

targets are all part of the administration hub that is WA Ultimate.

2013 AFDA Annual Awards

The Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships hosted here in Perth in October 2013 was

named “Tournament of the Year” at the 2013 AFDA Annual Awards. Congratulations to all who

were involved in putting on this amazing event.

6. Youth & Inclusion Officer Report

Kyal Oh The past year has been very busy and promising, looking into the future of youth and schools within WA. Vital project development, research and planning has undergone with primary and secondary school opportunities around Perth. One of my roles is to provide support to the WA Development Officer, whilst delivering in my role as the Youth and Inclusion Officer. Since my time as a part time employee for WA Ultimate (which began 25/02/2013) I have been working on a variety of tasks and projects, some of which include:

Coaching sessions and reports:

After creating the Session Report form last year we have used this to collect sufficient and precise information for us to draw back on and provide for planning and reporting to the DSR.

The report covers – School name, area, session duration, primary/secondary/Professional Development, participant ages, travel time, amount of students. By collecting this data from our coaches WA Ultimate is able to keep track of:

Statistics from sessions delivered to schools and programs from 01/06/2013 – 01/06/2013.

A total of 118 sessions delivered.

Professional development sessions‐ 4, with a total of 114 Adults being taught.

Regional sessions – 28, with a total of 655 different students being taught.

Metro area sessions – 83, with a total of 1404 different students being taught.

Regional: WA Ultimate worked closely with Be Active and the Shire of Goomalling earlier this year, delivering several sessions to two local primary schools in Goomalling. WA Ultimate YouTube Channel:

After launching the WA Ultimate YouTube channel in July 2013. The plan is to use our YouTube channel to produce more media coverage on things such as tournaments, Perth Ultimate League, personal team interviews and volunteer profiles.

The most recent uploads that have been developed are the Rise Up video/photo montage from the Rise Up clinics held in Perth in February and a WA State Indoor Championships advertisement.




Youth Development Camp

The Camp took place on the 6th April 2014 at John XXIII College in Mt Claremont. The objective of the Youth Camp was to develop young athletes’ skills and game play with participants of the same age (13‐18 years). The development of players from a young age is very important for further promotion of the sport, and to the future of Ultimate in WA, particularly for elite team representation and it is the perfect build up to the 2014 Australian Ultimate Championships.

This camp took a lot of planning and preparation after our original ambition of running a youth development camp

series of multiple weeks. This one saw a different approach of a six hour day camp.

The day saw eight athletes attend a full day of Ultimate skills, drills, tactics and games. Each athlete also received a free WAFDA youth shirt & disc upon signing up.

Each athlete’s skill level ranged from brand new to Ultimate, to playing for WA at last year's AYUC, to playing for the Australian U19 Team! Lots of fun was had, with lots of photos being taken! They can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/YouthUltimateWA High School Ultimate Championships (HSUC) At the start of planning the High School Ultimate Championships in 2014 a survey was developed and sent to all of

WA Ultimate school contacts. The concept is to have nine different divisions that schools can enter a team in. There will be Years 7‐8 combined, Years 9‐10 combined and Years 11‐12 combined. In each of these age categories there will also be a boys division, girls division and a mixed division. For a division to go ahead there will be a required minimum of 4 teams to enter in that division. The survey included many questions in regards to the schools interest and Ultimate participation levels but the main question was when they would be interested in attending. The original plan was to hold this event in either Term 1 or Term 2. As Term 3 is filled with athletics and Term 4 is filled with exams and there is an unlikely chance of gaining Year 11 and 12 participation. After meeting with several School Sports WA Sub regions and gathering some of their advice we have pushed the

proposed dates of the High School Championships back to Term 4 of the 2014 School Year. There will be further planning undertaken and another survey released to help gauge school participation levels and help us estimate where to hold the event. Associated and Catholic Colleges Relationships (ACC) In the past year we have built a promising relationship with ACC where we have run a Year 7 carnival day. In 2012 we held a morning clinic followed by a mini tournament with Corpus Christi. In 2013 we further developed this model to provide Ultimate clinics and a school carnival to 4 different schools in a day where they participated in a round robin competition. The day was successful and they have already locked us in for late 2014, hoping to have bigger participation levels than last year. This strong relationship really helps with securing numbers for our 2014 HSUC.




School Sports WA

After meeting with School Sports WA in January, we set a goal to become an ‘approved sport’. To reach this

status we are currently building an action plan incorporating the following:

Provide SSWA with my details and WA Ultimate details to update their website

Contact the Sub regions of School Sports WA

Arrange to attend each Sub Regions meeting

Approach and promote WA Ultimate to the present teachers at these meetings

Approach the teachers about becoming part of the Sub Committee to help plan a HSUC

Plan a HSUC with this committee

Run a HSUC and promote AYUC to the participants

Link the WA U18 team attending AYUC with SSWA by becoming an approved Sport.

Ask AFDA to approach School Sports Australia to link AYUC with SSA.

Rise Up Weekend On the weekend of the 15‐16th February, WA Ultimate had the privilege of hosting international coach, Alex Snyder of Rise Up Ultimate, as part of her intensive tour aimed at developing women’s club teams across Australia.

33 women attended Alex’s seven hour Women’s Development Ultimate clinic on Saturday, which focused on a range of extensive skills and drills.

On Sunday morning Alex hosted a special session dedicated to local Perth women's club, Kaos. Sunday afternoon Alex spent some time with Perth captains and coaches discussing coaching techniques such as developing team culture, goal setting, player development, developing drills and drill progressions, game strategies and focused scrimmages.

7. 2013 Annual WAFDA Awards

The 2013 WAFDA Annual Awards evening was held at the Hollywood Subiaco Bowling Club. The evening started with a recreation lawn bowls tournament followed by presentation on the awards. As well as celebrating another successful year, the WAFDA took the opportunity to recognise the people who have given back to the WA Ultimate community, both on the field and behind the scenes. These Awards recognise outstanding volunteer performances both playing and developing Ultimate in WA. 8. Ultimate Legends

The Ultimate Legend award is an initiative of the Australian Flying Disc Association, each state is provided with four uniquely branded discs to award to key volunteer contributors. These discs cannot not be purchased ‐ they can only be earned. The WA Flying Disc Association is extremely proud of these amazing contributors to Ultimate here in WA. Thank you to the Australian Flying Disc Association for providing the "Ultimate Legend" discs and the opportunity to recognise our awesome volunteers and their efforts. Sarah Brereton Sarah Brereton, locally know a "B" has hugely contributed to the Ultimate community in WA. Sarah volunteers on the WAFDA committee in the role of Director of Development, and is also the captain of the Perth‐based women’s team; Kaos. She was a key organiser for the hugely successful women’s League at the end of 2013, as well as hosting our guest coach Alex Snyder and arranging the catering for the “Rise Up Ultimate” project camp in February. Sarah is a pleasure to deal with and her enthusiasm for the sport is contagious among all those who speak with her. Steve Baker Steve contributes much of his time to the WA Ultimate community not only through his work with the Fear Ultimate Club, recruiting, training and developing players, but also plays the MAJOR role in maintaining the behind the scenes work of our website. All technical aspects required to host and update our site and the magic abilities to fix any problem that’s throw his way. Steve has been helping behind the scenes running and managing the website for many years, but dedicated even more of his precious time during this period and played a vital role in making the website launch as successful as it has been. Thank you to Steve from the WA Ultimate committee and the community. Annie Jessop This is Annie's second year on the WA Ultimate committee. Annie is always one of the first to put her hand up to help tasks and whether the task is small or large, she does it all with a smile. This year she has stepped up to the role of Events Director even taking control of the organisation of “Phoenix has Risen”.

She has also played a major role in the organisation of other major WA events such as Western Regionals this year. Annie also plays a vital role on the UWA committee helping to run and develop the Club. She's a delight to have on the WA Ultimate committee and we thank her for all her hard work. Caitlin Bartholomeus

Caitlin has been working tirelessly to take Murdoch Ultimate Club to the next level. She was instrumental in their recent move to become incorporated and has been vital to engaging new volunteers and players at the club. Caitlin was instrumental in helping set up the club’s new website, has helped run numerous events in the past with her team of volunteers and even assists with coaching of new players. Thank you Caitlin for your contribution to development and hard work into club Ultimate here in WA.

WA Attendance at International Events In July 2013 WA has strong numbers again across the U23 national teams that headed to Toronto, Canada for the World U23 Ultimate Championships. Australia won bronze in the Open division. World Ultimate Club Championships Two world championships will held in Italy this year. The World Junior Ultimate Championships (WJUC) and the World Ultimate Club Championships (WUCC) will both take place in Lecco. Aussie Thunder WA Representatives: Ashley Evans (Bunbury Ultimate Club), Sam Francoise (Captain) (PRIMAL/Murdoch Ultimate Club), Curtis Dickson (UWA Ultimate Club) and Jake Taylor (PRIMAL Ultimate Club) Southern Terra WA Representatives: Maxin Qua (UWA Ultimate Club), Gemma Baker (FEAR Ultimate Club), Emma Terkildsen (Murdoch Ultimate Club), Kirra Webb (ECU Ultimate), Bianca Collins (FEAR Ultimate Club), and Kirsten Chick (Disco Inferno)

Following WJUC event, WUCC will take place and this year we had two Perth club’s representing Australia. Sublime competed in the Open division and PRIMAL competed in the Women’s Masters Division. Sublime’s line‐up will include: Ben Bastion, Brenton McMorran, Matthew Borowski, Ashvin Nair, Jason Carr, Kyal Oh, Michael Chan, Hugh Osborn, James Eley, Hamish Pope, Mark Eley, Robert Prast, Peter Eley, Ashley Evans, Kendall Thorn, Glen Fowles, Paul Whittock, Sam Francoise, Eiji Ito, Ryan Kelly Max Daube and Paul Denyer. PRIMAL’s line‐up will include: Anna Haynes, Lauren Hoskins, Mary‐Jane Rigby, Sue Summers, Ellen Murray, Victoria Kueppers and Debbie Staples. We also have nine other WA athletes playing with other teams at WUCC: Lisa Finch (Hippo), and Minh Huynh (Batmania) in the Mixed Divsion. In the Open Masters Division we have Ken Summers, James Rowse, Paul Staples, Jerome Bull and Steve Baker playing for the Eastern Greys and John Damiani with Phat Chilly. In the Women’s Division we have Rebecca Brereton will play for Sporting Team Box Athletico United.WA Attendance at National Events Australian Ultimate Championships The WA Women’s team, Kaos, made WA Ultimate history this year as they became the first WA based women’s team to make the grand final of the 2014 Australian Ultimate Championships, held in Western Sydney from 24‐37 April 2013. The previous best result for Kaos was 4th in 2012 and this year they were able to push through to the final round with an amazing semi‐final performance to secure a place in the 2014 Grand Final. In an epic game against one our country’s best women’ team Sporting Team Box Athletico United (Victoria), Kaos put on a fantastic display of quality, ferocious, skilled Ultimate in front of a huge crowd.

Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships Three WA teams qualified and headed over to Canberra for the competition in October 2013. Cabs Are Here went into the event as the top seed after winning the previous year. With a very different line up, they finished in 13th place. FEAR went in seeded 22nd and held their seed for the tournament. Happy Pig went in seeded 24th and won their placing game to finish 23rd. Australian Youth Ultimate Championships In the financial year of 2013‐2014 there were two Australian Ultimate Youth Championships (AYUC) held. This event had not been on the national calendar in some years and in 2013 it returned with a fresh format to bring back a vital development milestone in the elite player pathway. The AYUC is a state based, separate gender competition for athletes 18 years old and younger. 2013 AYUC For the first time ever, each State Association was invited to enter a Representative State team (rather than club). The U18 boys division had 7 teams enter including New Zealand, NSW, VIC, ACT, QLD, TAS and our very own WA team. A representative team was chosen from two selection events. A total of 15 athletes register their interest in the team and following selections 11 players from WA were chosen. U18 Girls Attendees Gemma Baker (FEAR Ultimate Disc Club) and Maxin Qua (UWA Ultimate Club) Coach: Kyal Oh Manager: Anna Haynes Over the weekend of 5th and 6th of October in Melbourne, the U18 WA Boys played 8 games across the weekend. WA finished 2nd at the 2013 AYUC an amazing effort from everyone involved. Winning 6 games from our 8 and only losing to New Zealand, still defeating every other state within Australia. At the end of the tournament there was an “All‐Star” Australian team picked to represent and compete against the New Zealand team in the Trans‐Tasman Cup. Four WA team members were chosen in the team to represent Australia; Sam Francoise, Ashley Evans, Sean Davis and Jake Taylor and the Australian Representative team was coached by our own Kyal Oh. The MVP for the whole tournament was awarded to our co‐captain Sam Francoise, who performed excellently across the weekend even after a heavy Australian University Games schedule the week prior. Western Australia also had 2 girls travel to Melbourne on behalf of WA, Maxin Qua and Gemma Baker. There was no formal girls’ teams from any state other than Victoria, so a combination team was created to take on Victoria in addition to a modified overall format to ensure they also competed in a Hat tournament including all the girls involved over the weekend. The girls weekend was constructed around development and training for the future of the U19 representative girls teams. At the end of the weekend they announced an “All‐Star” Australian squad with both WA members being selected to play in the green and gold to take on a team formed of senior female players from around Australia in a feature match. With six Australian representatives chosen across both divisions, tournament MVP and taking 2nd place overall to NZ but remaining undefeated against any other Australian States and Territory, the 2013 Australian Youth Ultimate Championships was a huge success for Western Australian and a promising look into the future of youth Ultimate within this state.

WA at the 2013 AYUC U18 Championships AYUC 2014 June 2014 saw the return of the Australian Youth Ultimate Championships since its return to the national calendar of events in 2013. WA were very keen to be a part of the AYUC this year again after a dominant performance at last year’s championship, .After consultation with the Youth Officer for AFDA and Tournament director, Matt Hill, and the AFDA Youth Subcommittee it was decided that due to low numbers the Girls Division at AYUC 2014 will not be going ahead for 2014. A total of 17 athletes registered their interest in the team. Following selections 13 players from WA were selected. With South Australia unable to enter a team again this year, we added an extra player from Adelaide allowing us to enter a team of 14 players. 2014 WA Boys U18 team list: Julian Bocking (UWA), Seth Lovell (Broome), Bennett Carpenter (UWA), Alex O'Neil (UWA), Cameron Chung (UWA), Adam Pitt (PRIMAL), Sean Davis (SA), Ainesh Ritschny (PRIMAL), Matthew Eton (UWA), Bradley Scott (UWA), Josh Higgins (UWA), Rylie Spence (PRIMAL), Owen Hearne (PRIMAL) & Henry Tan (UWA) Coach: Kyal Oh Assistant Coach: Ash Evans Manager: Anna Haynes The team competed at the 2014 AYUC on June 7th and 8th in Melbourne, Australia. The U18 boys division had 5 teams enter including ACT, NSW, QLD, VIC and our very own WA team. Our WA boys, with a very dominant performance throughout the weekend, took home the GOLD!!




WA finished 1st at the 2014 AYUC with an amazing effort from everyone involved. The team won five of their six games. At the end of the tournament there was a Green and Gold merit team picked.

Three WA team members were chosen in the team to represent Australia; Ainesh Ritschny, Sean Davis and Alex O’Neil.

Our captain, Ainesh Ritschny, took out runner up in the MVP votes for the entire tournament.

With 3 All ‐ Australian representatives chosen, runner up tournament MVP and taking out first place, the 2014 Australian Youth Ultimate Championships was a huge success for Western Australia and a promising look into the future of youth Ultimate within this

state.

WA at the 2014 AYUC U18 Championships The following activities and tasks were undertaken under the coverage (either in full or partially) of the High Performance Portfolio: Rise Up Visit

WA Ultimate had the privilege of hosting international coach, Alex Snyder of Rise Up Ultimate, as part of her intensive tour aimed at developing Women’s nationals teams across Australia.

33 women attended Alex’s 7 hour Women’s Development Ultimate clinic on Saturday, which focussed on skills such as planning your throw, planning your cut, using fakes to clear the break side,

throwing into space, defensive footwork and positioning, cutting into space laterally, dumping and velocity throwing & catching.

On Sunday morning, Alex hosted a special session dedicated to local Perth women's club, Kaos. Alex worked with the girls on throwing skills, effective marking, offensive cutting patterns and “give & go” passes.

Alex spent some time with Perth captains and coaches on Sunday afternoon discussing coaching techniques such as developing team culture, goal setting, player development, developing drills and drill progressions, game strategies and focused scrimmages.

All who were attendance across the Rise Up weekend gained a wealth of knowledge in excitement to implement everything they had learnt into their Ultimate pathways.

Youth Academy

A regular training and development squad was attempted to be established in January. The intention was to provide an opportunity for youth players to train and develop their skills well in advance of Youth Nationals in June. Unfortunately, there was insufficient interest for the academy to proceed, due in part to difficulties in advertising the program during school holidays. The preparatory work undertaken in planning the academy remains current and it is the intention to seek to initiate the program in the latter part of 2014.

Development Pathway

A draft Development Pathway was developed, highlighting the various levels of Ultimate available and the suggested steps that should be followed to reach the elite level. The draft Development Pathway provides a framework for new and existing players to understand the higher level Ultimate opportunities that exist. The Development Pathway remains in draft form, with its finalisation pending the progression of the updated WA Ultimate website. The functionality of the website will determine whether the Development Pathway is finalised in an interactive or static format. It is also the intention to prepare a number of specific examples based on the ultimate career paths of some of WA's elite players to illustrate the different ways to reach the elite level.




Beach League

A six week Perth Ultimate Beach League was conducted at City Beach during January and February 2014. Four teams took part in this beach event and involved 34 local Perth players.

Sarah Brereton The following activities and tasks were undertaken under the coverage (either in full or partially) of the Development Portfolio: Women’s Development 2013‐2014 saw some great progress in women’s Ultimate in WA. The Women’s Mini‐League hosted by Kaos Ultimate Club in November saw four teams competing over the four week league with short development sessions before each week’s game focusing on different skills. The attendance at this event was a huge increase on similar events held in previous years and this increased participation followed on to the Rise Up Development Day in February with over 30 WA women of all levels of experience taking up the opportunity to improve their skills and learn from an amazing player and coach, Alex Snyder. With more and more women playing Ultimate and engaging in opportunities to further develop their skill. WA is already beginning to see some amazing results in this area with Kaos Ultimate Club bringing home a silver medal from the 2014 Australian Ultimate Championships in Sydney – the best result to date for a WA women’s team! Looking ahead, women’s development in WA is showing great potential with strong teams and recruitment across the university scene ahead of the 2015 change to separate gender competition at the Australian University Games, and another great opportunity for growth with Perth to host the 2015 Australian Ultimate Championships in April.

Club Development In order to keep up with the changes and growth in WA Ultimate the Club Affiliation Policy has undergone revision throughout the 2013 – 2014 financial year. The Victorian Ultimate policy has been used as a model with significant consideration given to how the policy can be used to create a mutually beneficial relationship between WA Ultimate and the WA clubs, and also to the future potential for youth and high school clubs. With the significant growth in incorporated clubs currently participating in Ultimate in WA and representing WA away from home it is hoped that this policy will be in place by the end of 2014. University Development 2013 Australian University Games results: UWA – 4th Division 1 Murdoch – 5th Division 2 Curtin – 10th Division 2 ECU – 22nd Division 2 2014 TSWA results: 1st Murdoch 2nd UWA 3rd Curtin 4th ECU This year, thanks to strong recruitment and development programs, four of the five WA universities will be represented at AUG in Sydney for the final year of the mixed gender university competition. In Division 1 UWA will be looking to improve on their previous best performance of 3rd, while Murdoch, Curtin and ECU will be




sending their strongest teams in a number of years to achieve success in Division 2. Nationals Development A development pathway has been drafted by the High Performance Director which is hoped to assist in talent identification and in providing players with the possible steps to be taken from grass roots to nationals and beyond. Masters Development PRIMAL Ultimate Club will be representing WA Ultimate and Australian Ultimate in the Women’s Masters Division at the World Ultimate Club Championships in Lecco in August. With seven members of the team from WA, Perth played host for the team’s training camp with local players helping out to provide an opposition for a scratch match

Professional Development for Coaches A coach development course was delivered by Alex Snyder as part of the Rise Up Ultimate Development weekend in February with 11 coaches representing most of the incorporated club and university teams in WA ultimate. This course was a rare opportunity for these coaches to expand on the knowledge learned in the Level 1 Accreditation with focus on aspects such as team culture, player development, drills and coaching styles and delivery of information.
