 PRINCIPAL PROSE  WELCOME BACK Welcome back and welcome to our new students. Term 2 is a great time for learning and making good progress in class. There are a number of interesting and rewarding excursions and sports activities this term. The Band is having an intensive music camp this term. At the end of this term our mid‐year reports will be sent home.  ANZAC SERVICE We had a wonderful ANZAC day ceremony on Tuesday that Mrs Zorian organised and Year 2‐6 students attended. The students were very well behaved and I believe this helped them understand the significance of the day to the nation, along with work done in the classroom. I acknowledge with deep gratitude all those men and women who fought for their country,  especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Lest we forget.  CROSS COUNTRY RUN Our annual cross country run is on next Thursday. Year 3‐6 students and some Year 2 students who turn 8 this year participate. The annual Cross Country Carnival will be held on Thursday 3 May 2012 and the back up date is Monday 21 May 2012 (Term 2 Week 5). The event will take place at Turramurra Memorial Oval (corner of Eastern and Karuah Roads). Miss Wilcock is off class today organising the event.   FRIDAY 3 ‐6 SPORT  Most parents have returned these notes and we added yet another winter sport option with swimming at Macquarie Uni indoor pool. The teachers all give up part of their recess and lunch to make our sports program work and I appreciate this contribution, especially the PSSA coaches, Miss Miller and Mr Steel.

A few parents have yet to return the signed note and fee for sport for Term 2. Students cannot participate if we do not have the signed permission note. Please do this as soon as possible. If you are experiencing financial difficulty please contact me.  BOOM GATE POOL ROAD The rain over the vacation has delayed some minor works that were due to be done at school. The most significant of these is the boom gate but this is expected to be completed next week.   WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY – FRIDAY 18 MAY 2012 Walk Safely to School Day is an initiative that encourages parents and carers to walk their children to school to promote regular exercise habits in young Australians, lessen traffic congestion around schools and reduce pollution.  Walk Safely to School Day aims to encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school children to reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour. It promotes the health benefits of walking. On the morning of Walk Safely to School Day, start a healthy habit by leaving the car at home and walking your child to school.  If you can't walk the whole way, walk to and from public transport or, if you must drive, park the car a good distance away from the school gates and walk the rest of the way.  OC CLASSES – YEAR 4 PARENTS Opportunity classes are one strategy used by the Department of Education and Communities to cater for the learning needs of gifted and talented students in Years 5 and 6. If you would like your child to attend an opportunity class in Year 5 in 2013, you will need to apply soon. All applications should be made online through an internet connection. A limited number of application packages will be provided through the school shortly for those parents who do not have internet access. The web site where you find all the necessary information, including the list of schools with opportunity classes and the application portal is: http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/learning/k‐6assessments/ocplacement.php. Parents will be able to apply online between Monday 30 April 2012 and Friday 18 May 2012.   All students applying for Year 5 opportunity class entry will be required to take the opportunity class placement test on the morning of Wednesday 25 July 2012. The test will be held in a test centre to be advised individually to all applicants by 11 July 2012. Parents will be responsible for transporting their own children to and from the test centres. I will send home a reminder and an expression of interest form tomorrow. I will ask all Year 4 parents to reply. I will ask you to say you are, or are not, applying so I am sure you have received the message.  NAPLAN Year 3 and 5 students will be sitting for the national tests in literacy and numeracy over three days in May. Early in September the results will be given to schools and families. On Tuesday 15 May 2012 the Year 3 and Year 5 students will sit the language conventions test and the writing test. On Wednesday 16 May 2012 the Year 3 and 5 students will sit the reading test. On Thursday 17 May 2012 the students will sit the numeracy tests. We will sit catch‐up tests for students who are away on Friday 18 May 2012 but they may have to miss sport to do this. For information about the tests http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/learning/7‐12assessments/naplan/parents/index.php

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL  Welcome back to the beginning of term two. I trust you and your children had an enjoyable holiday and are refreshed after the two week break.  ANZAC DAY SERVICE On Tuesday, Years 2 to 6 participated in the ANZAC service in the school hall. Our School Captains and Vice Captains, Darcy, Elia, Alfie and Emma presented the service. The students heard what happened on Anzac Day in 1915, and remembered those who had given, and are still giving, in our Armed and Supporting Services. A special thank you to Luke B who played in the service two difficult pieces of music on the trumpet, ‘Reveille’ and ‘The Last Post’ . The choir sang a beautiful song "Non Nobis Domine" which means "Not to us, O Lord, but to your name give glory."  This week, our Student Leaders will be attending a Leadership camp.   STAGE 3 PUBLIC SPEAKING SPEECHES I would like to congratulate the Year 5 and 6 students on the standard of speeches presented in the finals on the last day of term 1. It was a honour to be asked to aid in the adjudicating of the speeches. The content matter and structure of the speeches were all of a very high standard. I was very impressed with the delivery of the speeches with most of them being memorised but particularly with the awareness of pacing their sentences and the intonation of their voices. After much deliberation, the winners of the competition were Nate C and Ben G. These boys both used body gestures to enhance meaning, brought prior knowledge of global subjects into their well structured lengthy impromptu speeches on ’The people I respect’. These students will now represent Wahroonga Public School at the ’Multicultural Public Speaking Competition’ later in the year.  Thank you to the parents of all of these students who supported their children with the completion of this project.  NEW ENROLMENTS TERM 2 Since late last term we have welcomed ten new students to ‘The Bush School’. We welcome Daniel H, Ethan C, Megan C, Kayleigh H, Rosie O, Ashley H, Ethan H, Junkai W, Claudia M and Ashleigh K. As is always the case at our school, the boys and girls have made the new students feel welcome and assisted them both in the classroom and in the playground. I am sure that our new families will enjoy their involvement with our school.  UNIFORM Full winter uniforms will be expected to be worn from the beginning of Week 3. As the change over to winter uniform has taken place the expectation is that not only is the full school uniform worn each day, but also that the uniform is worn correctly.  When wearing their sports uniform, students are to wear sports socks that cover the ankle, not the style where the top of the sock is level with the top of the shoe. Boys are reminded that the winter uniform requires their shirts be tucked in at all times. Parents are reminded that girls should not wear jewellery to school (other than sleeper or stud earrings) and that wrist bands are not to be worn to school. The school community strongly supports the correct wearing of the school tie as part of the winter uniform. With the changeover to winter uniform it might be opportune to develop a simple procedure at home for the children, particularly those in the junior classes, to ensure that the tie can be easily knotted and worn each day. The support of parents in relation to these issues is appreciated.   REMINDER: TERM 2 SPORT FOR YEARS 3 ‐ 6 Term 2 sport for Years 3—6 begins tomorrow. Students going to PSSA netball and soccer, Macquarie swimming and the Macquarie Sports program will not be at school during lunch time. If ordering lunch at the canteen, there will be a limited selection of foods for these group which will be distributed at recess time. Lunch orders must be ordered on‐line using the specially allocated Friday Sport menu. Students need to quickly collect their lunch orders at recess time as there will only be a fifteen minute time frame to collect lunches, eat recess and go to the toilet before getting on the bus at 11.30a.m.Please note that at recess and lunch time frozen items will not be sold in the last 10 minutes to allow time for eating.  CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL Next Thursday, 3 May 2012 all students attending the carnival need to wear their sports uniform and must be wearing a hat. Drink bottles may be taken to the carnival. The Zone Cross Country will take place on Monday 28 May 2012 and the Area Cross Country will take place on Thursday 14 June 2012.

EVENTS IN TERM 2 This term, there will be a number of excursions and video conferences undertaken by the students in support of their current unit of work study. Parents are asked to check all excursion notes as they outline uniform requirements for the excursions and what needs to be taken on the day. Any questions relating to these excursions should be directed towards the class teacher or stage supervisor. To keep up to date please check the ‘coming events’ column on the front page of the newsletter.    Kindergarten students will be visiting the farm for their first excursion on Wednesday 13 June 2012.    Year 2 students will be involved in video conferences ‘Palaeontology through puppetry’ and ‘Bin Busters’ and a 

‘Big Dig’ excursion in Week 3 and Week 4.    Years 3 and 4 students will participate in a ‘Skyworks’ video conference    NAPLAN testing for Years 3 and 5 will occur in Week 4  ‐ May 15 2012 to May 17 2012    Walk Safely to School on Friday 18 May     ICAS Writing and Spelling assessments for Years 3 to 6 will occur on 18 June 2012 and 19 June 2012.    2013 Kindergarten Information Evening will be presented on Tuesday 22 May from 7.00pm—8.30pm.    Northern Sydney Dance Festival  where our dance group will audition for next Wednesday 2 May 2012.    Annual band camp for Year 3 to 6 from Wednesday 23 May 2012 to Friday 25 May 2012.    All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 as part of the PD/Health/PE key learning area will participate in Life 

Education NSW lessons in the Life Education van with Libby and Healthy Harold.   As part of the Music strand within the Creative Arts key learning area, Musica Viva will be performing four

AUSRTRALIA’S DINOSAUR TRAIL Year 2 always enjoy studying dinosaurs. Many a young mind has dreamed of becoming a palaeontologist and discovering the huge dinosaurs that once roamed the earth. In Term 1, using the Internet, Year 2 travelled back to a time in Australia before these huge reptiles became extinct. We looked at the dino‐saur tracks, read about the dinosaurs Matilda and Banjo and wrote information reports and descriptions about the Australian dinosaurs. In Week 2 we will watch a VC about Winny the Muttaburrasaurus, found near Winton.  In the holidays I travelled along the Dinosaur Trail, situated in a magnificent and remote part of Queensland. It was an exciting ‘prehistoric’ adventure, a ‘must‐see’ for all little and big Aussie dinosaur enthusiasts. I learnt so much about our country’s extraordinary Cretaceous Age.  Lark Quarry near Winton is currently the only site on Earth recording a dinosaur stampede. Year 2 know about the stampede trackways ‐ dinosaur footprints preserved in ancient mud. In Term 1, we pretended to be palaeontologists and ‘read’ the tracks of the three different kinds of dinosaurs at that place, on one particular day, 95 million years ago. It was an amazing experience to stand at that very place and imagine the scene that unfolded millions of years before. Steven Spielberg used scientific evidence of Lark Quarry to create the stampede scene in the movie Jurassic Park.  In ancient times, the Queensland outback was part of a vast inland sea called Eromanga. It was full of all kinds of ma‐rine reptiles. The excellent museum called Kronosaurus Korner at Richmond, houses hundreds of these marine fossils. The locals told us to, “Stop on the side of the road and kick around in the dirt, you’ll be sure to find a fossil or two.” On a drive up to Porcupine Gorge National Park, we were gripped by fossil fever. We tried our luck in a dry creek bed and found handfuls of Belemnite fossils – ancient squid – and other fossils. Two hours of fossil hunting felt like two min‐utes. The Belemnite was once a tasty snack for the Ichthyosaurus ‐ holding one in my hand was an incredible feeling.  We visited the Dinosaur Laboratory at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs near Winton, where huge sheds house hun‐dreds of dinosaur fossils. I saw and touched the bones of Matilda and Banjo (an Aussie Velociraptor). We learnt that very soon they will announce the discovery of a “new” dinosaur called Cooper. Cooper had a hip height of seven me‐tres and he may turn out to be the biggest dinosaur in the world.  So if you like nature and the great outdoors, want to discover something new, like collecting things and love science, 

then a trip along Queensland’s Dinosaur Trail will be an unforgettable experience.

The Map of Paradise  

As I crept forward at night it was dark and was spooky. I heard a scratch, scratch. It was in the kitchen, the little trip trap of drops coming out of the trap. There was nothing. I went back to bed and I dreamt of good things. After a little while I began to dream of bad things. That I was lost in a deep dark forest all alone with no one. Then I found a beautiful land with fairies. They told me that Queen Sophia at the Golden Palace wanted to meet me. While I was walking down the long hall of the palace I met a chameleon who loves sweets. I gave him some and then I met Sophia the Queen. “What do you need, your majesty?” I asked. She wanted me to go to the Land of Ogres and get the Map of Paradise. I went with Mickey the rainbow dragon.  When we reached the Land of Ogres I crept under an enormous table. When no one was looking I reached up and snatched the map. The ogres saw me so I ran for my life. Their giant feet nearly squashed me. Mickey flew me back to the Queen who was so happy to get the map. She jumped with joy and gave me a wheelbar‐row full of jewellery and gold.  Then I woke up and realised it was all a dream.  But if it was a dream, why was there a gold coin on my bed?

BAND NEWS I hope everyone had a very happy, safe and relaxing holiday and children are returning to school invigorated for the commencement of the new term.  Warrawee Bowling Club:  Sunday 6 May – Concert and Stage Bands. Concert and Stage Bands have been invited to perform at Warrawee Bowling Club’s Sunday Afternoon Jazz Concert.  This is a fun afternoon for all the family. Arrive at 2:30 pm.  Wear Band Uniform.  Parent help to transport equipment is required. Detailed notes have been sent via email.  Band Camp:  23‐25 May 2012 Band Camp is a fabulous opportunity for the children to have intensive music tuition with some outstanding tutors and to enjoy a wonderful experience.  Crusaders Camp at Galston is a fantastic venue and to quote the children, “The food is great!”  They love the freedom of running on the huge oval, sitting around a campfire and spending time with their friends, while their music improves in leaps and bounds.  Concert Band will enjoy two nights departing at 3:00pm on Wednesday 23 May, other children in Years 4,5 and 6 will enjoy 2 days and one night and Year 3’s will have one long day including dinner.    Band Camp notes were distributed during band rehearsals last week.  If your child has not received one, please ask them to see Anne Seage in the band room.  Numbers are limited, so please return he forms asap to ensure a place.  All notes must be returned by Monday 4 May.  Please note that late enrolments cannot be accepted.  Entertainment Books Due to popular demand, the 2012/13 Entertainment Books will be available next week.  A copy will be sent home to each band family.  You only need to use 3 or 4 vouchers to be financially in front, so please support the Bush School Band Program.  Ask family and friends if they would like to order a book.  Books for other areas, eg. Sydney, Par‐ramatta and Blue Mountains etc, can be delivered within a few days of ordering. The Band Program makes $13 for each book sold, so you may prefer to make a donation.  Thank you to those families you have already done so. If you do not wish to purchase the book, please return it to the band room asap.  Diary Dates: Warrawee Bowling Club: 6 May – Concert and Stage Bands Band Camp:  23‐25 May. Ryde East Eisteddfod:  Sunday 27 May – Intermediate, Concert and Stage Bands. McDonalds Sydney Eisteddfod:  Intermediate Band ‐ 5 June.  Concert and Stage Bands ‐ 7 June.

SEMINAR FOR PARENTS - TERM 2, 2012

The seminar will be facilitated by CAFT staff (which includes Psychologists, So-cial Workers & family therapists).

The seminar will be run at Hillview Community Health Centre 1334 Pacific Highway Turramurra. Entry via Boyd Ave. Please allow enough time for park-ing and arrive 10 minutes before the registered start time. Unfortunately, we can-not provide childcare facilities

The seminar is available to families who live in or have children attending pre-school or school in the Hornsby Ku-Ring-Gai local government area.

The cost of the seminar is $10 but there will be no charge for concession card holders.

Registration is essential as groups fill quickly. To confirm your place please call CAFT 9477 9190. Participants will be asked to complete feedback forms. The service reserves the right to postpone or cancel seminars in the case of in-
