The Positive Ageing Expo was held in Richmond last week, showcasing activities and information about retirement. How would you like to spend your retirement?

Peter Gliddon, Richmond.

“I would like to do a bit of fishing, relaxing and biking around Nelson.”

Patricia South, Richmond.

“I am long retired and enjoy sitting and knitting for various people. I also like to do a bit of shopping too.”

Tony Doake, Richmond.

“I would like to play golf, go fishing in the Marlborough Sounds and travel.”

Marjan Slappendel, Richmond.

“We moved from Auckland to Richmond to build a house here and to enjoy our retire-ment, we like biking and came down so we could ride the bike trails.”

of thermal runaway. “There are lots of different versions of these batteries, but the ones they had were good quality and they had a good charger too - these things just happen.”Craig says people should take a number of pre-cautions when handling lithium-ion batteries including charging them in a fire-proof contain-er and making sure they don’t over-charge the batteries. It is also critical to dispose of damaged batteries, he says. “It can happen with cellphone batteries. People drop their phone and damage the battery and it fails and starts producing heat.” The New Zealand Fire Service advises that it is important to use the correct charger and never leaving charging batteries unattended.

It also warns against leaving batteries inside a car on a hot day or any other place where tem-perature may exceed 60 degrees Celsius as well as putting loose batteries in a pocket, bag, draw-er or on metal surfaces where they could short-circuit against other items.

Fight 4 Victory just days awayFor 20 local novice boxers, this week will be the longest they’ve felt for some time. The second edition of the Fight 4 Victory corporate box-ing fundraiser is this Saturday night at Saxton Stadium and the fighters say they can’t wait. After three months of hard training, they will go face-to-face for the official weigh-in on Thursday night at McCashin’s Brewery, before finally going toe-to-toe on Saturday night.A bout between an army ser-geant and a police sergeant is the main event, but organiser Paul Hampton says there will be ten great fights throughout the night.“We’re really happy with the match-ups, everyone’s been training really hard and work-ing really hard, so it will be quite a show.”Tickets for the event are still available but the corporate tables sold out months ago. Paul says he’s hoping for a big crowd.“We’re really lucky that the event is already a money mak-er with the number of corpo-rate tables we sold, but it would be great to fill the stands as well and get a great atmosphere go-

ing. It really adds to it when there’s a vocal crowd.”Paul says the focus for the box-ers has definitely changed over the past week or so.“They’re excited now. I think they’ve all been through the nerves but now they’re just looking forward to getting out there and actually doing it.”There are plenty of Waimea-based boxers lining up on the night including Richmond’s Libby Brumwell, Wakefield’s Richard Malcolm and Bright-water’s Rhys Horncastle.Rhys says he can’t wait to step into the ring after training hard for the last three months, dur-

ing which time he lost 20kg.“I’ve enjoyed the training. It’s taught me a lot of discipline which will be important when I get in the ring.”Rhys says he’s “pretty calm about it right now but I know I’ll get a little nervous when I walk out in front of 2500 peo-ple.” Rhys is fighting Johnny Wilkie. Fight 4 Victory raises money for the Victory Boxing Chari-table Trust. General admission tickets are $35 and are available from the Theatre Royal, Richmond Mall, Nelson i-Site and at www.ticket direct.co.nz

A ball of moss isn’t the kind of thing that most people get excited about, but for Mapua ornithologist Rhys Buckingham it’s the biggest news in years. That’s because Rhys is convinced that the distinctive moss scrapings found in bush in the Marsden Valley near Stoke are a sure sign that one of the country’s rarest birds, the South Island Kokako, is living in the area. The last verified sighting of the elusive bird was way back in 1967, but now Rhys has seen the moss scrapings he is heading a full-scale search in the Marsden Valley starting this week. “The first time I saw these moss scrapings was on Stewart Island in 1984. We’d done this extensive survey and found a site with all these scrapings, so we played a tape recording of a kokako and all hell broke loose - there were kokako calling back everywhere,” he says.“The moss is really distinctive - there’s no mistaking it. We’ve also had reports of people seeing the kokako in the same area in the Marsden Valley too, so I’m very,

very excited.’ The moss scrapings were initially found by a member of the Marsden Valley Trapping Group, Don Sullivan, and Rhys says that discovery, along with the earlier unverified sightings of the bird in the same area, was enough encouragement to organise a search. However, Rhys says finding the notoriously elusive and shy bird, which is known as the grey ghost, won’t be easy. The South Island Kokako is grey with an orange-coloured wattle and has an organ-like song.“We’ll be using motion-sensor cameras and acoustic equipment, which we’ll place near the site where the moss scrapings were found. Once we set it up it will only be a matter of maintaining it.“We won’t have much chance of sighting the bird so we’re relying on modern technology. I’ve only seen it once but I couldn’t get a photo. It’s a real ghost.”

A Nelson driver, nearly four times over the legal limit, was stopped by police at a checkpoint while on their way to pick up a child from a rural school. The driver returned a breath alcohol level of 973mcg. The current limit for drivers over 20 is 250mcg, with the previous limit being 400mcg.A total of 10 drink drivers were stopped by police over the last week and senior sergeant Grant Andrews says seven of those drivers were caught with breath alcohol levels in excess of the old limit.

Only three were detected within the new250 to 400 mic range.Another driver stopped on Rocks Rd re-corded 978mcg.Grant says police plan to have a signifi-cant presence on the region’s roads for Easter weekend and warns drivers not to test them.“Our message is simple – if you’re driv-ing don’t drink and if you’re drinking don’t drive.”He says it’s “concerning” that the drivers they’re picking up not only fail the cur-rent limits, but the old ones too.

HEADLINERSFire destroys Stoke couple’s home: A house fire left two retired Nelsonians with only the clothes on their backs, as their Arapiki Rd home burned to the ground on Friday. Black smoke was seen from as far away as Motueka, Richmond and Nelson. At least four fire trucks from Nelson, Richmond and Stoke fire stations attended the fire. Lesley and Leslie Morris were taken in by neighbours while firefighters battled the blaze. See www.nelsonlive.co.nz for footage of the fire.

Orca Sighting at Tahunaui: A pod of orcas were sighted at the back of Tahunanui Beach yesterday, including a mother with her calf. DOC marine technical advisor, Andrew Baxter, says the orcas are most likely feeding on eagle rays in the channel.

Fire extinguished by residents: Firefighters were busy on Friday with a fire at a lower Park-ers Rd address. The fire burned out a sleepout and was suspected to have started from a bat-tery charger. Adventure tourism student, Tyler Isherwood, was staying in the sleepout and lost around $200 worth of newly-purchased tour-ism gear. Residents managed to put out the fire using a garden hose and a fire extinguisher.

Street piano turns 1: It’s been a year since Rich-mond’s street piano was introduced to Sundial Square and the occasion was marked with a mini concert. Some talented local musicians set up outside Ambrosia cafe last week to play a handful of songs for those with the time to sit down and listen and those just passing by.

A large crowd attended this year’s annual Positive Age-ing Expo which was held in Richmond last week. The expo, which aims to raise awareness about health and recreation services in the community for older peo-ple, was officially opened by Maggie Barry, Minister for Senior Citizens. Tasman District Council and Nelson City Council are principal sponsors of the free event which featured 73 stallholders providing infor-mation on various health, hobbies, sports and recrea-tion, government services and support groups for sen-ior citizens. “We would like to thank the people for turning out, the feedback from the event has been warm and positive. It is an acknowledgement of the changing demographics in our region and it is a chance

to showcase and introduce positive ageing to people,” says Mike Tasman-Jones,

Community Partnership Co-ordinator at Tasman District Council.

The Access Mobility stall, displaying home healthcare equipment, proved very pop-ular with the crowd. The Richmond-based com-pany showcased a wide range of products including kitch-en aides, personal care and bathroom products, a mo-bility scooter and electronic bidet. “It has been good chat-ting to everyone, it is a very well organised event. We have had a lot of interest in the electronic bidet today, it is something that people haven’t seen before,” says Sue Birchfield of Access Mobility.Plenty of spot prizes were also on offer, including a Wil-son’s Abel Tasman cruise for two, Richmond Mall, Fresh Choice, Queen Street Phar-macy and Stacey vouchers, a Mitre 10 cargo trolley and a $100 Trustpower voucher.Public speaker and author, Lois Tonkin, talked about how to cope with grief and motivational speaker, Mark Inglis, presented a positive ageing in action seminar.

Residents of one Richmond subdivision are planning to make Neighbours Day Aotearoa celebrations an annual event after enjoying a friendly get-together on Sunday.Neighbours Day is a community-led campaign aimed at bringing together the people next door or across the street to turn strangers into neighbours. It is held the last weekend in March and last Sun-day residents on Bramley and McCauley streets in Richmond celebrated the occa-sion with a backyard barbecue. The Bramley Bunch, as they affection-ately call themselves, first got together for Neighbours Day last year and had such a

good time that they decided to do it again this year. Nickie and Peter Fitzgerald, who are part of Neighbourhood Support, organised the barbecue which was held in their backyard and attended by about 30 residents. “About half of the people who live in this area are Christchurch earthquake refugees and our experiences there have made it important that we get together,” says Nickie. She put flyers in letterboxes and emailed neighbours inviting them to the barbe-cue. She also contacted Marty Price at Waimea Neighbourhood Support, who provided vouchers for sausages.

SPCA, Wednesday, March 18: After their arti-cle in the Weeklys reporting an overwhelming number of stray cats and kittens, SPCA staff were pleased with the positive response and number of adoptions, another four finding new homes over the weekend. Nelson SPCA general manager, Donna Walzl, says that while they were pleased with the adop-tions, more cats and kittens are still coming into them and she encourages anyone interested in a new kitten to come and see them. Donna also urges people to de-sex their pets to avoid un-wanted litters.

Grey Power, Wednesday, March 25: After 21 years as president of Grey Power, Gordon Cur-rie announced his re-entry into the running for the position to provide some stability to Nelson Grey Power. Their AGM on April 1 will officially announce the new president but with no other nomina-tions put forward Gordon is set to be the Nelson Grey Power president once again.

Geoff Golding can talk about Austin-Hea-leys for hours and has been working with cars since he was in “short pants”.As an area representative for the Austin-Healey car club in the upper South Island, Geoff says he is ready to rev up a storm this weekend with Nelson hosting this year’s Austin-Healey Car Rally. The rally gives enthusiasts a chance to show off their cars and discuss all things Austin-Healey.“It’s that glue that binds everyone together, we all have a common interest group.”The Austin-Healey was created when Don-ald Healey mocked up his sports car design for a motorshow in Britain. The Austin company combined this with their leftover mechanical parts to create the first line of Austin-Healeys in 1953. “They’re a sports car, they’re relatively cheap. The early models were 100mph mo-tor car, here in Nelson they used to race on the beach,” says Geoff.

“All of a sudden there were these old sports cars sitting around in sheds and people said “well they look pretty good”. They’re time-less in their appearance.”Around 60 Austin-Healey cars will gather in the region to take part in the four day rally including 18 groups shipping cars over from Australia to compete. The weekend sets off on Friday night with a social gathering before heading off to the Grape Escape on Saturday morning. Here the public has a chance to take a look at the classic cars before they continue on to Mapua for lunch.A navigation run to the A and P Show-grounds in Richmond will end with a best car competition and then driving tests will take place.“There’s a bit of speed involved hence the middle of a racecourse. Cars will slide on the wet grass, that’s enormous fun,” Geoff says.On Sunday, the competitors will travel to Takaka and an AGM will be held on the Monday.

Long-standing local contractors Waimea Contract Carriers Lim-ited have been put into voluntary administration following cash flow pressure resulting from adverse trading conditions.John Fisk and Richard Longman, Partners of PwC, today have been appointed Administrators of the log transport business operating in Nelson and Marlborough. It is the intention of Waimea Con-tract Carriers to continue to trade as usual while they assess rehabili-tation options.Administrator John Fisk says, The company’s directors made the dif-ficult decision to put the company into voluntary administration due to cash flow pressure.

“The administrators will seek to work with the company’s clients to continue to support their forestry activities. During the moratorium period, we will be focused on de-veloping a plan that, we hope, will result in returning the business to viability.”

A request for handmade poppies for a display at Nelson Cathedral has had such a remark-able response the coordinator has been left “shocked”.Susan Holland came up with the idea to make a giant display by hanging homemade wool-len or fabric poppies in the Nelson Cathedral to commemorate 100 years since the Gallipoli landings. The idea isn’t new, with other parts of New Zealand and Australia doing a similar concept. But Susan says the reaction from Nel-sonians has been fantastic.“I didn’t expect the response would be quite so much as it is. I’ve been quite shocked.”When Susan spoke with Waimea Weekly last September, her goal was to have 1000 poppies made and donated by locals. She has well over 3000, with another two weeks before the display goes up. Susan is a part of the Nelson Creative Fibre Group which has led the project, but says do-nations have come from all around the region with good support from the local libraries and wool shops.“There are patterns online or people could make their own, and it really got people inter-ested in what we do,” says Susan.“We’ve done displays in the Richmond Library and local wool shops have been fantastic too.”The poppies are glued to a five metre by one metre sheet of hessian and will hang in front of the two big windows inside the Cathedral. The display will go up on April 10.Susan says the group just needs some galva-nised poles donated to slide through the top of the display. The pipes need to be at least 1200mm long and anyone who may be able to help can contact Susan on 547 4329.

Support for Victory Boxing:Kia Ora. I am a Maori student who attends Youth Nelson. A few weeks

ago I read an article about Victory Boxing and the positive affect on the community it has. I agree with this because my friend goes there and I have watched his progress and how much he has achieved.

Victory Boxing is a place where kids can go to stay off the streets. It’s a safe place for them to go after school to work out and meet other people who are doing good things for others. Not only does it help the teenagers who are at risk of getting into trouble with the po-lice, but it also helps the younger children

in need. There is a monitoring programme where the older stu-dents teach and coach the younger ones. I would encourage others to join and support Victory Boxing and Paul Hampton’s efforts to save the youth of Nelson. J.Manawaiti

Cycle ride raises cash:Update for Cancer ride, the Scott Family raised $2100

from Nelson. Many thanks to all those who donated to the cause. Chris Scott.

Not a happy diner:I am emailing you to high-light a concern that I see in

research has been an ongoing is-sue/concern for some time in this town of New Zealand.I was drawn into the KFC store at Tahunanui this evening because I felt like some of the Colonel's de-lights for dinner, after a busy few days at NMIT. What I was subjected to was eye-opening and purely unacceptable

in all sorts of ways for a franchise store.I arrived to initially find the end of the queue at the door. And that queue did end up outside the door at times. I saw two till operators working very hard to keep the lines moving. One till was unattended throughout. I also noticed a person doing tasks that at the time seemed trivial to the needs of the customers. I refer to her walking around behind the counter wiping benches and generally doing very little when her staff were working tirelessly to get the queues moving. This lady had a badge on that stat-ed she was the Asst Manager of the store. I asked her if she could supply another till operator to assist with the queues of peo-ple. I was told firmly that if I had a com-plaint I was to call head office and com-plain to them. I was polite in my request having never been in this store before, I thought a little assistance in looking at the big picture would help her and her team out. That was not the case. I also noticed a team member having his dinner at the busiest time of the day. The drive-through has one window for ordering and serving, this queue was so long cars where turn-ing around and moving somewhere else. I note that the staff who were serving were working damned hard. I was told by members of the queue that it was always like this here. I asked them why they come back here if that was the case. They said they have to put up with it because Motueka was to far to go for their

KFC fixes. Having said that, they did say a lot of people now travel to that store miles away because they have had enough of the service at this store. The manager needs to front with an explanation to the commu-nity. Dean Fielding.

Playcentre battles for numbers:Playcentre was great for new mums with contact of other mums in the

area, and also training as assistants and su-pervisors. Irene Joyce Cassidy.

Sadly a sign of the times, hard to find volunteers for school fund-

raising or trips these days, too. Jacinda Stevenson.

I was heavily involved in playcen-tre back in Wanganui before we

moved to Nelson, but when we moved here there was not one in Stoke! I was one of the founding members of Stoke playcentre, but soon after started sending my oldest to kindy! It was an awesome experience and the friends I made at the Wanganui one are still friends and we keep in regular contact on social media. Sarah-Hope Bailey.

My two boys went to playcentre and then went to kindy. They were

the best years at playcentre, I made really good friends and the best bit is that you get to help and support one another through the maze of motherhood! Jo Cotton.

Volunteer trapping groups around Nelson and Tasman have been working overtime catching thousands of pests to help protect native birds with one group in St Arnaud trapping a record 3750 predators last year. Scientists had predicted a plague of rats and mice this season after one of the heavi-est falls of beech tree seeds in decades. The seeds are an important food source for rats and mice which not only prey on bird’s eggs but are also eaten by deadlier preda-tors like cats, stoats and weasels.“The rats were the biggest problem be-cause there were so many of them and they eat the bird’s eggs,” Friends of Rotoiti vol-unteer, Peter Hale says. “But we also targeted rats because stoats eat the rats and if there’s lots of rats around the stoats have bigger litters - it’s all linked together.”Friends of Rotoiti trapped an astounding 3750 predators around St Arnaud and sites adjacent to the Rotoiti Nature Recovery

Project in 2014. Although rats (1341) and mice (1684) made up most of their catch,

larger and more deadly predators like stoats (56) and weasels (13) were also trapped.“There was a massive increase in December and January but the numbers are tailing off now,” Peter says. “It’s been one of our busiest seasons.” The Friends of Rotoiti have 415 stoat traps, 280 rats traps, 70 pos-sum traps set in 52km of traplines.Trapping groups in the Marsden Valley, Grampians, Cable Bay, Rabbit Island and Richmond Hills have reported similar increases al-though the numbers were not as

high in the Richmond HillsTraps set in the Grampians caught 86 rats in the first two months of this year com-pared to just 21 last year and five in 2013 and volunteer Bryce Buckland says “a hunter with night vision system reckoned the bush was alive with rats.”Marsden Valley trapping group volunteers Don Sullivan, Ian Catto and Denise Cur-rie say their 30 members have also been catching plenty of rats with 163 trapped in January. “We had a bad year in 2009 when we got over a 1000 rats but this is worse,” Don says. The group started trapping in the Marsden Valley in 2007 and now has over 600 traps set on 12km of trap lines.

Ian Price also reported an increase in pests on Paermata Flat, Bishop’s Peninsula and Cable Bay with 24 rats and 118 mice trapped in February. A trap line that is used as an index caught 54 rats and mice compared to just nine last February.Richmond Hills trapping groups have not recorded a big increase in rat numbers this season but have caught a staggering 4022 mice and 2406 rats, 588 possums and 157 stoats since trapping started in 2005. Vol-unteer trapper Will Rickerby is hoping the comparatively low catches this season could be an indication that the trappers are “on top of the rat populations” in the Rich-mond Hills.Although the trappers have been super busy this season, they are all happy to spend the countless hours clearing, setting and making traps to help the native bird populations recover. “I’ve done a lot of tramping over the years and I’ve always wanted to see the birdlife come back into the bush,” Ian says. And their efforts certainly seem to be pay-ing off with numbers of native birds in-cluding tui, bellbirds, weka, keruru and robins increasing in the Marsden Valley.“It’s all about helping protect the native birds,” Peter, who has retired in St Arnaud, says. “It’s our country and it’s out heritage and it’s not just the Department of Conser-vation’s job to protect it.”Many of the trapping groups are supported by Pic’s Peanut Butter and Ewings Poultry who supply products for baiting the traps, as well as Mitre 10 and Summit Real Estate who supply material for traps. DOC and Nelson City Council also provide some funding for the groups.

Around 100 thespians from Nelson, Tasman and Golden Bay took part in the Univer-sity of Otago Sheilah Winn Regional Shakespeare Festival held at Waimea College over the weekend. This year Tasman and Nelson Districts combined to present one festival, which saw 38 groups from seven secondary schools performing five to fif-teen minute scenes from vari-ous Shakespeare plays. The Festival scope is wide as students act, direct, serve as crew, compose music, write essays, create costumes and design artwork for their per-formances. Students could set their scenes in any period or style as long as they used Shakespeare’s words.Waimea College year 10 stu-dents won best comedy, most original costume and best choreographed scene for their modern interpretation of A Midsummers Night’s Dream. Directed by Melanie Stewart, head of music and performing arts at the college, the scene was set in an alley behind a su-permarket and costumes and props included shopping bags and trolleys. Stand out actor of the festival was Garin College’s Nick Eras-

muson who won the Best Ac-tor and Best Delivery of Lines Awards for his performance of Twelfth Night. He was also awarded direct entry into the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand National Shake-speare Schools Production which will be held in Welling-ton in September

He will join 48 students from other regional competitions across the country for the Shakespeare production. From this group, 24 students will then be chosen for the Young Shakespeare Company which performs at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London next year.

Allspec Marine offers Nelson boat own-ers a diverse collection of skills for the ultimate marine service experience. Having been established in Nelson a year ago, Allspec Marine caters to everything boat owners could wish for. Not only do they specialise in the maintenance, repair and servicing of all water craft, their dedicated team of boat builders and shipwrights have the resources and experience to craft or refit fibreglass or wooden boats to a client’s specifications.

Their capacity and capability means you get what you want when you need it, whether it’s for a weekend getaway din-ghy or a 100ft launch. The team offer it all from spraying anti-foul to interior fit outs, painting, varnishing and finishing, carbon fibre construction, marine sys-tems and engineering, fibreglass repairs, cabinet-making and joinery, and much more. They are also one of two agents and applicators in Nelson for Prop-speed, a similar product to anti-foul that

protects all your stainless steel, bronze and brass components. Phil Harris has been a mechanic for over 20 years now, starting

his career as an automotive technician. Since changing positions to a marine mechanic, Phil has trained in Yamaha, Mercury and Mercruiser motors and is now a valuable asset to the multi-faceted business. Although they are the Nelson agent for Hyundai Seasall in-board motors, Allspec Marine's expertise encompasses all makes and models of inboard and out-board engines. If you happen to need a new motor, they can size, supply and install from a range of motors to best suit your boats particular requirements, and at

very competitive prices too. Phil is also your man for any other mechan-ical-based issues, including engine upgrades, fuel sys-tems, water tanks, trailer repairs and plumbing.Manager of Allspec Marine, Malcolm Coffey, is a quali-fied composite boat builder who has had a passion for boats, especially power boats, his entire life. He start-ed his career with a super yacht company in Auck-land, working on world-renowned yachts, and after 14 years has gained a com-prehensive knowledge on the art of composite boat building. After moving to Nelson four years ago, Mal-colm is enjoying looking after the day-to-day run-ning of Allspec Marine and partner business Allspec Composites.

Head boat builder Jaan Smith is also pas-sionate about what he does for Allspec Marine. Working with boats seemed like a natural career path for Jaan who has always been into fishing, diving and be-ing out on the water. After working for

a local boat building and maintenance company on work experience while at school, Jaan was offered an apprentice-ship there in 2008. Since then he has qualified as a composite boat builder in 2012 and, most recently, as a timber boat builder. When they say they do it all, they aren’t joking. Allspec Marine delivers an all-inclusive service to boat owners of all shapes and sizes, and with a team of such diverse experience and knowledge your boat is guaranteed to be in safe hands.

Allspec Composites takes the fibreglass processes and techniques used in boat building and transfers them to a range of other applications out-side the marine world. To put it simply, they can do anything with fibreglass and carbon fibre. These days fibreglass is a popular material to work with as it does not rot, perish or lose its strength properties, it simply continues to exist. There are three aspects to All-spec Composites; design, repair and production. When a cus-tomer comes to them with an idea, whether it is a table, a bath or a body kit, Allspec can de-sign and modify the piece until the client is satisfied. Scott Tay-lor is in his element here with a background in composite design and engineering. After studying in Auckland he landed a keen sailor's dream job, working for world-leading composite engi-neering company, High Modu-lus, on the early America’s Cup boats, a skill set Malcolm is proud to be able to offer Allspec customers. “I just enjoy the creative side of it; what we do

as boat builders can be quite unique and challenging and the solutions we come

up with are pretty cool, and I hope I can bring a really cool dynamic to Malcolm’s team,” says Scott. Working from concept

to completion, Allspec Composites can design parts for cars, trucks, helicopters and small aircraft, custom create pieces for the office or bathroom, per-form fibreglass repairs, or even design and craft new bodies for speedway stock cars. Whatever you want to do with fibreglass, the team at Allspec Composites can help you realise it. Once the design and mould have been completed, it is possible to replicate the spec as many times as is required. From a one-off kitchen table to 100 chairs for a restaurant. Allspec Compos-ites have produced a number of products for an increasing range of satisfied customers, includ-ing motorhome bodies, a 10.5m sailing cutter for the Outward Bound Trust, and repairing the fleet of Kevlar Assault boats for the New Zealand Army. Whether your trailer boat is in need of some maintenance, you have a launch that requires re-pairs or you have an idea that only fibreglass can bring to life, don’t hesitate to give the team at

Allspec Marine and Allspec Composites a call today.

Unwanted hair is frustrating and embarrassing; it can even have an effect on your level of confidence. Anne Michelle is an electrologist with over 30 years experience and is committed to helping people get a new lease of life. Up until recently Anne was operat-ing out of the Richmond Town Hall office complex but af-ter an uncertain time frame for earthquake renovations, she has relocated her prac-tice back to her home in Tahuna. The move will also be a chance to plan and prepare for buying her own clinic space out in Richmond to continue treating her clients who come from as far out as Motueka. Her practice offers clients a relaxed space to enjoy some time out from their busy lives while Anne works her magic. Soothing music, a comfy chair and aromatherapy are all part of the service to help create the perfect beautification experience. Anne Michelle is one of the New Zealand’s most experienced elec-trologists and she works very hard to make sure you are 100 per cent satisfied with your treatment and results. Anne Michelle offers a number of

services for people including red vein treatment, removal of small warts and removal of skin tags but her main niche is the permanent removal of unwanted hair. In the hands of a trained professional like Anne, electrolysis is the only per-manent solution to this problem. If you suffer from excessive hair,

Anne can remove this quickly, gently and safely, helping you feel great about how you look. Her tailor made treat-ments can effectively remove hair from ar-eas such as the bikini line, toes and feet,

chin, nose and ears, lips, eyebrows, underarms and upper cheeks and neck. Anne encourages clients to start with a consultation which takes half an hour to forty minutes and includes a trial of the treatment for a cost of just $13. To achieve permanent loss of unwanted hair, a series of treatments are required which can be discussed during your consultation. You can also take that time to ask Anne any specific ques-tions about the process of electroly-sis. Give her a call today on 548 5646 or 027 439 3503 to book your consultation.

Being a business owner can be tough at times, but Nicky Woodbury, owner of The Wooden Spoon cafe, says it’s all worth it knowing they’re responsi-ble for making customers happy. With customer satisfaction high on their list, the staff of The Wooden Spoon were thrilled when last year they were recognised for their hard work, winning Cafe of the Year at the Nelson Hospitality Awards. The cafe is now in its third year of business but with a busy start to the year, they completely for-got to celebrate their birthday, an event normally commemorated with a wooden spoon competi-tion. The competition is still being held though,

with entries closing at the end of April. Simply get your hands on a wooden spoon and decorate it within the theme of Kiwiana. Nicky also encourages people to take advantage of their venue for evening functions with menus tailor made to your specifications.

Winter is approaching… Are you ready?

Well, the seasons are on the change again, which means the fish are all over the place. As quick as the grapevine tells you where they are, they move on to somewhere new. However, there is still some great fishing to be had if you end up in the right place at the right time.Pannies and some bigger model snapper are still being caught lo-cally in the blind channel, Tahuna Beach and Kina Bluffs areas. For further afield, fishing from Nel-son to Delaware Bay and Hori Bay down to Cape Soucis are all pro-ducing good catches. Recently, the Dawnbreakers Fish-ing club held its family weekend down at Havelock. The fishing was pretty tough all round but Loren McPherson hooked a great 19 lb snapper to keep her hubby Ollie out of the running for the overall heavi-est snapper prize. Congrats Loren.Rat kingies are making it difficult at times to get the lures and jigs passed them to the heavier green-back models, but this massive pop-ulation growth has done wonders for the Nelson recreational fishos, a lot of whom have had some great tussles on light gear with these little yellow tail torpedoes.Blue cod are in good numbers and sizes, and, with a possible change of local rules on the cards, these will become a mainstay catch for many as a fine table fish.Gurnard are another good tasting table fish that are in large numbers

around the province. To target these, use small flasher rigs with smelly baits like pilchard cubes, and don't be scared to drag the sinker along the bottom which will stir up some sand to activate their feed time senses. Alternatively, small jigs like jitter-bugs and bottomships will also be quite effective on the 'carrots'.So Nelsonians, don't let the cooler weather put you off, rug up and get amongst it for the start of our au-tumn season.

What does the harvest mean to you?All over the district we can see the signs of harvest happening. The apple or-chards are full of workers and the pack sheds are flat out. We live right on the edge of Brightwa-ter and at this time of the year we are reminded of harvest by hearing the ma-chinery moving through the vineyards. The harvesting of wine grapes is one of the most crucial steps in the year long process of growing grapes for winemak-ing. The time of harvest is determined pri-marily by the ripeness of the grape as measured by sugar, acid and tannin levels with winemakers basing their de-cision to pick on the style of wine they wish to produce. The weather can also shape the timeta-ble of harvesting with the threat of heat,

rain, hail, and frost which can damage the grapes and bring about various vine diseases. Even when the grapes are off the vines, there is still much work to be done to achieve an award winning Harvest wine. In many churches, once a year they celebrate with a Harvest Festival. A time to stop and recognise the good gifts of harvest given to us. Today when many of us do not go out in the fields to work. So har-vest festival is symbolic and it gives us time to reflect thankfully for not just the food we eat but also the electricity that is used to cook the food, the petrol that

gets us to the supermarket, the homes within which we eat, as well as our jobs which provides money and many other things. There are so many things in our lives that we should be grateful for brought about by the harvest of peoples abilities.Perhaps we should not stop there and ask our-selves a deeper and pro-vocative question -what is the harvest of my life, in the past, in the present and

in the future? As you honestly ask yourself the ques-tion why not join others asking this se-rious question of their life down at your local church.

Richmond’s newest homeware store, Bed Bath & Beyond exceeded sales expectations during its four day sale last week.New Zealand’s largest manchester specialist, opened its 52nd store in early March and Re-gional Manager Cathy Crichton, says it was good to see an increase in awareness of the new store. “The sale was fantastic, there was a steady stream of people coming through the doors and every-one seemed to like the 50% off. It was great to see people supporting a New Zealand company,” says Cathy. The new store features a mix of new and exist-ing staff which includes a qualified interior de-signer to help customers with design and colour. The company is enjoying servicing customers in Richmond and its outer lying rural areas.“The company has been involved in the Nelson region for quite some time now, with a store in Trafalgar St but it has always been on the cards to open a store in Richmond and it is great that it has finally come to fruition,” says Cathy.Bed Bath & Beyond’s new store is located at 186 Queen St, Richmond.

Does Jack need a walk?

Ph 0508 362 [email protected]

We have people with disabilities located in your neighbourhood that LOVE walking dogs.• FREE no-obligation initial orientation visit to meet your Able Pet Care team (person with a disability, support worker where required), and Able Pet Care Coordinator• $15 - half hour walks or $25 - hour long walks• Flexibility of times of day you desire the dog walking to occur

www.ablepetcare.org.nzBusiness Update. Adv.

If rover needs walking or the cat needs feed-ing while you’re away from home, don’t panic about finding a pet sitter, Able Pet Care have your solution. The Paladin Project is a charitable trust that was set up in Wellington in 2011, when its founder saw the need for a sup-port system to help peo-ple living with an intellec-tual disability, participate meaningfully in the mar-ket economy. Their mis-sion is to help those liv-ing with an intellectual disability experience and maintain a job and all the positive benefits that go with it, such as a sense of responsibility, earning an income and social inter-actions. The Paladin Pro-ject has chosen to do this through the Able Pet Care programme, something that is also offered in Blenheim, Wellington and Rotorua and is suc-cessful because it takes the hand-up approach, not a hand-out. Those with an intellectual disability will be required to perform the duties needed by pet owners, whether it is walking the dog

for someone with limited mobility or feed-ing animals while the owner is out of town. Juliet Thorn, co-ordinator for the new Nel-son programme, says their contractors are supported by Able Pet Care when they meet

the owners to determine a suitable relationship and are then able to complete the service independently, although some pet carers will still require a perma-nent support person. Both their pet feeding and dog walking services start from $15 and can also in-clude cleaning the litter box, bringing in the mail and watering any house-hold plants. When you use Able Pet Care for your pet care needs, you are ena-bling someone with a dis-ability to grow as a person through a greater sense of

self-esteem, responsibility and quality of life. If you need a hand looking after your pets on a regular basis or would like to take advantage of their services when you next go away, contact Juliet on 0508 362 253 or email [email protected] for more information.

Tasman Swim Club’s rising star, Sam McKen-zie, set 12 of the 17 new records established at the club’s swim meet at the ASB Aquatic Centre over the weekend with his 100m free-style time unofficially faster than the nation-al record.Sam broke records in the Nelson-Marlbor-ough age and open categories in the 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle events. The Waimea College student set four records in the preliminary heats before breaking them again in the finals - the only reason he didn’t set a national record in the 100m was that it wasn’t timed electronically.Garin College’s Thomas Heaton, 16, also had a successful meeting breaking three records in the 200m, 400m and 1500m freestyle events. Team-mate Talya Harwood (Waimea College) broke a 400m freestyle record. Nay-land College’s Oliver Stark broke the 100m backstroke record.Eighty swimmers from Nelson and Marlbor-ough competed at the meeting with half of all the swims being new personal best times. Qualifying for next year’s national age group champs for the first time were Cassie Hagan (Nelson College for Girls), James Fleury (Ga-rin College) and Xavier Anderson (Waimea College) from the Tasman Swim Club.Bendi Kepess (Waimea Intermediate and Tasman Swim Club) took over a minute off his 1500m freestyle time, Sierra Thomas (Waimea Intermediate and Tasman) took 47 seconds off her 800m freestyle time and club-mate Abbey Smale (Parklands School) shaved 43 seconds off her time in the same event. Maia Hughes (Birchwood School and Waimea Swimming Club) smashed her 50m breaststroke time.

Waimea Harriers Club will celebrate its 50 year anniversary this year with patron, Maarten van Geldermalsen, awarded a life membership for running the extra mile for the club since its humble beginnings.Over its 50 year history, the only remain-ing foundation member has been involved with the club as secretary, president, com-mittee member and patron. He still helps out regularly with time keeping and put-ting out road cones for races. In recogni-tion of his services to the club, Maarten will be awarded life membership at the 50 year anniversary dinner along with other members, Duncan Mitchell, Liz and Alan Eskrick, Bill Ferguson and Craig Harford.Maarten was first introduced to running by his son Ted, who at the time was train-ing with Grant Nelson, son of 1948 Olym-pian Harold Nelson, at Nelson College. Ted asked his father if he could take him along to the Athletics Nelson Club.“He said to bring my sandshoes with me, I was 37 at the time and had never raced in a running club before, but I decided to have a go,” says Maarten. From then on he was hooked on running, and a little while later Harold suggested to Maarten that Richmond should start a har-riers club of its own. In May 1965, a meet-ing was held and the Richmond Harriers Club was formed. Its first run was on April 24, with a field of 32 runners who wore a simple uniform of a white singlet with red band featuring the letter R on it. At that time, there were three other harrier clubs in the region, including Nelson, Tra-

falgar and Methodist. In 1976, the name was changed to Waimea Harriers Club to incorporate members from the rural areas around Richmond and was registered for-mally as a club. Today, there is member-ship of more than 70 people and the club caters for both walkers and runners.Maarten, who is 87 years old, remembers his first major run with the club, in the Parker Shield competition,“In those days the run was 10 miles and

four laps around a farm which was full of hills. I had only just gotten into running and Harold Nelson had been coaching me a little, but I worked at the Research Or-chard in Appleby so was pretty good on hills. I was running against the likes of Rod Dixon, who whizzed past me. I remember thinking, good gracious this is a long way, but I stuck to it and finished,” says Maarten.Maarten retired from running at 70, direct-ly after completing his last half marathon.

“At one stage, we had a man in his 80’s run-ning in our club who ran a half marathon in 2hrs 45mins and I said to my friends, if it takes me 1hr and 45mins to run a half marathon, then shoot me. When I was 70years old, I ran a half marathon and it took me 1hr and 43mins so I said that is enough, I am stopping now,” says Maarten.Although he liked running in competi-tions, he enjoyed the friendships made over the years. “We had lots of fun over the years, the company was good,” says Maarten. His son Ted, who originally introduced his dad to the sport, is now 61 and involved in orienteering, and is a former age group Rogaine World Champion.Although Maarten’s sandshoes have been put away he is still very active and walks and cycles regularly, but says he doesn’t en-joy it half as much as running.Waimea Harriers 50th anniversary cel-ebrations will be held on Sunday, June 21. Past and present members will have the opportunity to meet and compete in either a half marathon, marathon, or be part of a six person relay team over the marathon distance. This will be followed by a din-ner in the evening at the Honest Lawyer. To recognise the club’s anniversary year, financial members will all receive a com-memorative singlet, T shirt or polo shirt. It is hoped that past members will renew their contact with the club and participate in the celebrations. For info, email presi-dent Eileen Beattie on [email protected]

Proud to support the Nelson Motor Show

Richmond’s Marvin Curry has a bright future ahead of him in rugby league after scoring a stand out try in a match against the Vodafone Warriors development team in Auckland.Marvin, who was born in Samoa, moved to Nelson with his family six years ago and has proven to be an all-round talented athlete. He represented Samoa in an in-vitational XIII rugby league team when playing against the Vodafone Warriors de-

velopment team earlier this month. “It was a privilege to be chosen to play for Samoa, it has been one of my dreams to represent my country of birth in any sport,” says Marvin. The Nelson College for Boys year 13 stu-dent was playing right centre when he scored during the match, which saw, the Warriors team win 34-8. Former Kiwi’s Tony Iro, Duane Mann and Stacey Jones, now Junior Warriors coach, watched the

youngster play and liked what they saw. As a result, Australian NRL player agents Jim Banaghan and Steve Gillis have shown an interest in working with him. Marvin who is part of the South Island Rugby League Academy, says he likes the centre position but also enjoys playing fullback, in the halves or on the wing.“I really enjoy playing rugby league as there is more space to run and not as many stoppages as rugby. In rugby I used to play

on the wing and not touch the ball very much, in rugby league I get plenty of ball and it is a lot faster,” says Marvin. At 16, under New Zealand Rugby League rules, Marvin is too young to play for an open first grade rugby league team, so he will likely play rugby union for his school before returning to league for the Tasman Titans under-17 team. His ultimate goal is to play at a profession-al level in an NRL team.

BROKEN LEG: Tapawera’s Jonathan Fenemor gets his left leg broken in a tackle during their division two club rugby game against Rang-ers played at Upper Moutere on Saturday. Tapawera won 27-13. Jona-than needed a rod and screws inserted into his leg which was broken in two places. Photo: Susan Fenemor.

Tapawera teacher and amateur photographer Susan Fenemor has taken some great shots over the years, but last Saturday she cap-tured one moment that she wished never happened.Susan, who often has her photos published in the Waimea Weekly, was photographing the division two club rugby game between Tapawera and Rangers at Upper Moutere. She was in perfect po-sition as her son Jonathan raced towards the try line, but as well as capturing a match-winning try she photographed the exact mo-ment when he broke his leg.

“I was clicking for the try and, of course, I had about 10 shots be-fore and couple afterwards.” Susan says. “But I didn’t realise what had happened until a team-mate tried to help him up and it was clear that things weren’t right” Once it was apparent Jonathan was injured, Susan says the team manager, who is a trained first aider ran on to help out. She also went over to the deadball line to see that he was alright.Susan says Jonathan had surgery at Nelson Hospital on Sunday, with a rod and screws inserted in his broken leg.

Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys will be aiming to “simplify things” when they take on Kahurangi at Riwaka in their round three Tas-man Trophy club rugby match this Thursday night.Waimea may have scored five tries in their 31-7 bonus point win against Marist but coach Mark Milne was not entirely happy. “We weren’t direct enough and tried to play too much rugby too early. We’ll needed to simplify things and get some go forward before we go wide.”However, Mark says the team’s de-fensive effort was outstanding es-pecially inside their 22. Waimea’s fitness was also a factor in a strong last quarter.“Our defence was very aggressive and I thought our fitness in the last 20 minutes made a difference.”Waimea led 10-7 at half time be-fore scoring three second half tries to prop Misi Nale, fullback Iliesa Ravudra and Crusaders flanker Pete Samu. Pete and winger Vil-iami Lolohea scored the first half tries.Mark expects playing Kahurangi on their home ground to “be a real challenge”.“It’s always a difficult ground to play especially at night.”The game kicks off at 7.30pm. Waimea Old Boys senior B won their division two game against Marist 33-0.
