GREETINGS FROM SUSIE BORGSTROM, Central States Women of the ELCA President
We are very blessed to have a wonderful group of leaders to guide us in our endeavors every year in our organization. As you will notice we have a few new names on our list
of officers and board members. I would like to share a little about each of us so you may
know us a little better. My name is Susie Borgstrom, and I am your president. My goal this year is to listen more, help more and give more. It only takes one person to make a
difference and I say “let it begin with me”.
We have a new vice president, and you know her best as the “newsletter editor”. She
has given that position up and is now working on our convention for next year. Lisa
Youngquist lives in Lindsborg, Kansas, where as it happens, the convention for 2013
will take place.
Beth Rockelman is our new secretary and she is from Jefferson City, Missouri. She
has been active in her church and cluster and this is her first time to be a synodical officer. We are so pleased to have her join us!
Jewell Swinney is our current treasurer and is from Herrington, Kansas. She has been good to us and invited us to use her house as a meeting room and bed and breakfast a
couple times. She has worked hard at keeping the books in line and has done a fantastic
job!
Alice Burnett is a new board member. She is from Derby, Kansas and has also been
active in her church and cluster. This is her first time as a women’s synodical leader, and
we are looking forward to her thoughts and ideas for the future of our organization.
Mary Kern is one of our current board members and is from Syracuse, Missouri. She
is interested in getting the youth of our community involved in our organization. She brought her granddaughter to the last convention and was pleased to report that “she liked
it and would like to go again”.
Gloria Sharp is one of our re-elected board members and is also from Jefferson City,
Missouri. Gloria is an extremely dedicated board member. She was the assigned person
to get the prayer chain rolling and she was the one responsible for all the display table
venders at last convention. She had to do a lot of research and emailing and spent quite a bit of time getting everything in place. We applaud her efforts and are thankful she is on
for the coming term.
Rhonda Templing is one of our current board members and is from near Hoisington,
Kansas. Rhonda is a past president of the Central States Synod Women of the ELCA and
is currently serving on a churchwide committee on stewardship for our women’s organization. She is one of those great people who can get things done and make it look
so easy! She has a wealth of wisdom and experience for us to draw on and we are
fortunate to have her on our leadership team.
Lois Viebrock is one of our current board members and she considers herself a
“recycled board member” as she has served before. She comes from Versailles, Missouri
and I do believe she is so full of life and love that the room actually lights up when she enters. She is a talented and gifted musician who is fun loving and always entertaining.
These are officers and board for the coming year and I hope you get to know each of them and count them as your personal resources for Women of the ELCA in the future.
We all share common missions and goals and working in unison with other sisters in
Christ does make good things happen. We do ask that you pray for us in the
coming year as we, your leaders, do the will of the Lord and make decisions for our women’s organization. Thank you for all the donating, working, and volunteering
that went into making the last convention a success. It was AMAZING!!!
GREETINGS FROM OUR NEW VICE PRESIDENT
My name is Lisa Youngquist. I am the new Vice President of the CSS Women of the ELCA. I know I
will have big shoes to fill following up on Kathy Ouellette's tenure. What an amazing woman she is! I
live in Lindsborg, KS with my husband of 27 years and two daughters. I actually have 4 children, 2 boys
and 2 girls. One son, Tim, lives in the Bentonville, AR area with his wife. Our other son, Tom, lives in a suburb of KCMO. Our daughters, Tiffany, is a sophomore at Bethany College and on the dance team
there and Ericka is an 8th grader at Smoky Valley Middle School. We have been in Lindsborg 4 1/2
years. I am also on the women's coordinating committee in our congregation. (Messiah Lutheran Church) Between our kids and church that pretty much keeps me busy.
We were able to award two scholarships this year for first time attendees to convention. They went to Debbie Raymer from Zion Lutheran in Beloit and RoAnn Button from Trinity Lutheran in Great Bend.
We want to welcome these ladies and hope they had a wonderful time. We are looking forward to seeing
you both next year and bringing more friends with you!
Friday night of convention was filled with fun activities. About 30 women ventured across the street
to a little store called Charming Charlies. For those of you who have never heard of Charming Charlies,
it is a store filled with all kinds of accessories: necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, purses, scarves, shoes, tops...the list goes on. Each color of accessory has its own "island" so if you are looking for a particular
color you can go straight there! We raised $135 in "donations" which went to the Second Harvest
Community Food Bank. Each woman shopping gave a $5.00 donation and could have exclusive shopping from 9:00-11:00 PM and receive 10% off on all our purchases.
The other event Friday night was Zumba time. Ladies put on their workout duds and spent some
time exercising. Zumba is a Latino inspired form of dance/exercise. Over $900 in pledges was collected from those who "zumba'd" and those who just wanted to fundraise. This money went to Inter-Serv which
supports the Wesley Center preschool & Childcare.
I am looking forward to the upcoming year and all that it has to offer, not only for me but for the
Women of the ELCA. God's Peace to each one of you. Lisa Youngquist

Anniversary Convention
Workshops.
“Leave Your Excuses at the Door!” - Sparking Passion within Your Congregational Unit
This workshop was by Jenny Michael, Churchwide President of the Women of the ELCA. She began
with “A Biblical View of Excuses and Complacency”. Her power point characters highlighted our
stumbling blocks of excuses along our pathway to excellence. A Bible study of Hosea 13:5-6 looked at
the Israelites complacency issue; cause and effect, as well as our own everyday lack of vision to future
accomplishments. We are to seek ways to do the job God calls us to do. Inspiration, confidence and
guidance in 1 Corinthians 12:31; Philippians 1:9-10 and 4:8 emphasize that we are to strive for a higher
goal, grow in knowledge and use this new beginning NOW!
Be bold to mobilize and commit ourselves to achieve goals as we share what our passions are
Using a Personal Ministry Strengths Profile helps us to assess our interests, skills, knowledge,
experience, working style, personal development and opportunities for Unit growth.
Celebrate our team effort in achieving each goal and project completion and effectiveness.
Evaluate progress. Each Unit president or circle leader must express a vision, set goals,
small or large and encourage everyone.
Let the Spirit in. Familiar words from the Bible and of our Women of ELCA Purpose Statement that “we are created in the
image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit,”…. encourage us
to be living the life God expects of us.
The Pony Express led by Cindy Draffon and Stan Rippee
Those were the days!!! A dream became reality in the mid 1800’s. Only the fastest horses and light
weight riders were chosen for the arduous journey. No riders lost their lives. Stan Rippee wore clothing
in style of the era. He identified multiple uses for a bandana, buckskin with fringe and a slouch hat.
When in public every man’s attire included a vest and tall boots with spurs. Stan and his son often
portray the old West characters at events to share history of the Pony Express and the City of St. Joseph.
Cindy Draffon shares her vast knowledge of area history while giving tours of the Pony Express Museum.
The Museum is “kid friendly” with hands on interactive opportunities which brings history alive to more
than 44,000 individuals per year. Exhibit additions include the painted horse, era coins, a pony school
with bonnets on pegs, mules, and more. A 150th anniversary of the Pony Express was celebrated in 2010.
Tours cost $5 per individual. Groups receive discounts.
GREETINGS FROM our Treasurer, Jewell Swinney
As Women of the ELCA we have many reasons to Sing to the Lord! And we certainly did that
with songs of joy, inspirational worship, and good food, fun and fellowship at our convention as
we celebrated 25 years of being Women of the ELCA.
The Holden Prayer Around the Cross service was used for the opening worship service.
Rev. Janice Kibler gave the sermon. The Love Offering was received at this service.
Rev Jacquie Berlein conducted the service and gave the sermon at the closing worship service on
Sunday morning. This was the Service of Holy Communion.
The Barbara Nelson Silent Auction winning bidders for the baskets and other items were
announced at the end of the Saturday evening 25th Anniversary Celebration Banquet. There were
26 items donated for the auction. They sold for a total of $858.00.
Following is a list of Offerings and other receipts: Love Offering - $2,449.00;
Sunday Offering - 1,235.00;
Monetary donations for YWCA - 110.00;
Zumba Pledges for InterServ - 901.00;
Charming Charlie's receipts for Second Harvest - 135.00;
Display Table receipts - 120.00;
T-shirt sales - 350.00;

course, the 25th Anniversary Appeal is ongoing. Send your donations to me Jewell Swinney at
2132 S. 3000 Road, Herington, KS 67449. Thank you for all your contributions.
ALICE BURNETT – New Board Member
I have been a Lutheran woman all of my life. Growing up in Nebraska, my mother took me to “Ladies
Aid or LCW” at a very early age. I like to attend cluster meetings, CSS conventions and have attended 5
Triennial’s! My home church is Cross of Glory in Derby KS. My great enjoyment is being the co-
leader of a weekly Bible Study at a residential living facility. I look forward to being on the CSS
WELCA board and pray that God will give me the Spirit of listening and learning so that I can humbly
serve you. I will share a little more about our offerings.
One quarter of the convention offerings were given to “The Second Harvest”. The vision of Second
Harvest Community Food Bank is to build hunger-free communities in Northwest Missouri and
Northeast Kansas by nourishing our neighbors.
At the Fair Trade/SERRV table was Smoky Valley Cluster. The mission of SERRV is to eradicate
poverty wherever it resides by providing opportunity and support to artisans and farmers worldwide. One
convention attendee said that she liked to purchase items from the SERVV table because she felt like she
was not just purchasing a gift but that it was also helping out someone who needed help. "The gifts that I
purchase are unique and not some cookie cutter item" she also added.
A MESSAGE FROM MARY KERN – current board member
On the way home from the Women of the ELCA Convention in St. Joseph I picked up two granddaughters in Kansas City. They and three other grandchildren were with me until the next Sunday.
For those of you who were at the convention you know that my granddaughter Mikayla was with me at
St. Joseph. ALL week she was telling everyone about the convention, the workshops she attended, the
choir and all of the wonderful ladies that were so glad she was there. She even wants the two granddaughters from KC to go with us to Lindsborg next year. That I don't know about! I do encourage
all of you to talk to the women in your congregation about bringing your daughters {and in-laws} and
grandchildren with you next year. This is one way we can help them be healthy young women and girls. We can feed their love of Christ through love for others. One way we were able to show our love of
others was through our In-Kind gifts. We weren't able to get a monetary value for the gifts but there
was several hundred dollars of merchandise plus monetary donations. A challenge was issued to
each woman in the Women of the ELCA, and you know that each woman in your congregation is a
member of the Women of the ELCA, to contribute $25.00 this year.
One-half of the amounts raised will go to the Malaria Campaign and one-half will go to the
Church-wide synod. We desperately need additional income to the Central States Women Synod and the Women of the ELCA church-wide office in order to continue our work here at home and worldwide. Each
unit will send their contributions to Jewell Swinney, treasurer.
I will be talking all year about the convention next year in Lindsborg, KS. My goal is to bring at
least 10 other women and girls with me. I challenge each of you to do the same.
A MESSAGE FROM GLORIA SHARP – re-elected board member
Prayer Request
If you have a prayer request or concern, please e-mail me at [email protected] and I will
contact your Central States Women of the ELCA board to pray for your concern.
Convention Displays We were very pleased to have six displays at the 25
th annual convention of the ELCA.
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans was represented by Cody Vaughn along with Thomas Fuhrman
and Curtis Beahrend. Thrivent is ready to help you with education analysis for your children, different
types of insurances, retirement planning, investment strategies and contingency planning, and estate
analysis.
Paula Kitt brought the Mission Investment Fund display to our convention. This fund uses the
money you invest to make building and renovation loans to ELCA congregations and related ministries.
Pat and Jim Olson of the Midwest Transplant Network encourage you to register to become an organ
and tissue donor.
We were again happy to have JP Palmer visit with us about Lutheran Planned Giving. JP is
available to you and your congregation without cost or obligation to provide education and consultation in the area of stewardship of your estate assets.
Bethany Home is a Christ-centered home that is both an independent living and assisted living facility
located in Lindsborg, KS. Patricia Roraback was at their display to share information about Bethany Home.
The Lutheran Campus Ministry display was headed by Pastor Shawn Norris. This ministry strives to touch the lives of as many students of all faith backgrounds as possible.
We thank all of these organizations for sharing information about their particular ministry. Thanks,
also, to the displays that had drawings for gifts and we can’t forget to say thanks for the candies.
A MESSAGE FROM RHONDA TEMPLING – current board member
The theme of the 2012 Central States Women of the ELCA convention was "Sing to the Lord." We had
the opportunity to accomplish the theme through song, worship, speakers and visiting with old friends and
making new friends. Our church wide rep, church wide president, Jenny Michael helped us "sing to the
Lord" through her church wide presentation and workshop. We opened and closed the convention with
our theme hymn "Earth and All Stars", which tells us to "sing to the Lord."
A group of us had the opportunity to do some sightseeing in St. Joe with our church wide president,
Jenny Michael. We went to the Jesse James' house, the house where Jesse was killed. I think we all were amazed at how small the house was, only four rooms. Our group filled the house. We learned some
interesting things about his death.
Our next stop was the Pony Express museum, a stop we all would recommend. The tour starts with a
very informative film about the Pony Express and then you can walk through the museum. It was very interesting and educational. We all enjoyed the afternoon seeing some of the sights in St. Joe.
LOIS VIEBROCK – current board member shares convention highlights
For Lutheran World Relief the ladies assembled 4 baby care kits, 8 school kits, 39 personal care kits and
33 fabric kits.
The workshops were wonderful... "Bullying in our community" was led by Brenda Smith, a school
counselor. It covered the definitions of bullying. Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves
a real or perceived power imbalance. Types of bullying: verbal and nonverbal, social, physical, cyber bullying. Harassment is unwelcome conduct based on a protected class (race, sex, age, disability, religion)
that is severe or persistent and creates a hostile environment. Missouri has state policies and laws on
bullying/harassment. Safe Schools Act-Teachers and staff are mandated reporters.
The workshop entitled "Veronica's Voice" was a favorite to all who attended. Sex-trafficking victims-
the average is 12-14 years of age with 300,000 each year. They are enticed with material things and it
takes years to get out IF they can find a way out. Many times this ends in suicide. The internet has taken over as the way to attract young girls. Most of the men who "use" these girls are married! Veronica's
Voice is named for Veronica Neverusky, one of the countless victims of commercial sexual exploitation
in the United States. A daughter, sister, mother and friend, her death on August 1, 1993 at the age of 21 has had a lifelong impact on those who knew her. Though the case went unsolved for many years,
Veronica's killer was finally brought to justice in 2007, much to the relief of her friends and family. A Thank You from CHERYL TAYLOR as she goes off the board – and we say thank you to her too! I don’t know where to start. These last two years have been a huge growing experience for me. I got to
know some wonderful women who care deeply about the issues of women and how to address the issues.
They take their duties as leaders of the Central States Women of the ELCA seriously. Whenever I felt out of my element they gave me encouragement and helped me grow as a woman. I will miss working with
them and having a lot of good times. So as I leave the board I feel sadness but also joy for my two years.
Thank-you for giving me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and grow. I hope to see all of you in Lindsborg next summer.
Cheryl Taylor, Action/Mission
To: Central States Women’s Convention,
The YWCA Women’s Shelter thanks you so much for the large donation that the First Lutheran Women have
generously gathered in order to help the families in our shelter. The several packs of diapers have helped supply our
children for the rest of summer! The backpacks, school supplies, and coloring books will all be given to the children
during the Back to School Fair that is held every year in order to get the children excited for the upcoming school
year. The personal hygiene items and towels are very important to our shelter as it takes the community to supply
these things to keep our shelter able to service so many women a year. The several other household items will be a
great addition to our New Start Store to let the women pick out the things that they want and need for their homes as
they move out of shelter.
The First Lutheran Women loaded up one car and one minivan full of donated items (also to mention the donation
that you brought in the next week!). The items filled the donations area and truly made it a “Christmas in July” event
as we sorted through all of the items. Your generosity will help so many women and children in our community.
Thank you for your ministry!
I would like to give a personal thank you for the ladies (whom I did not get names) that loaded their van up and
helped unload during their lunch hour on Saturday! Thank you so much for your help!

Happy 25th
Anniversary, Women of the ELCA!!!
$25 for each individual Woman of the ELCA to reach $25,000 and beyond.
How do you celebrate a 25th anniversary? You do something special, you reminisce about
the way we were, you tell your family and friends about the event and maybe, invite them to
celebrate with you.
Look back 25 years ago at the photo album, what did we look like?…What were we doing
with that funny hair cut? What was going on with that strange colored couch? Wow, the cars
even look different now. See how the kids have grown…See how much the trees around the
church have grown? Has that sidewalk always been there? ….Time has a way of slipping away
from us. We do not need an excuse to celebrate, however, 25 years is a mile marker that is pretty
huge. Let’s take time out and give ourselves a little “high five” for getting the Women of the
ELCA going and keeping it vibrant and healthy for the future generations.
Churchwide Women of the ELCA is planning a tour tentatively December 8-15 to Liberia.
There they will listen to stories of change, coping with everyday war and violence and will visit
Phebe Hospital Nursing School and Curran, a ministry of the Lutheran church in Liberia. They
will learn of its extensive health care program. Both the ELCA and the Women of the ELCA
have been supporting this and other education and health ministries in Liberia since 1916.
Churchwide has also set in place a 25th
anniversary appeal to commemorate the event.
Every dollar sent to the appeal supports the Women of the ELCA and the ELCA Malaria
Campaign. Every donation is split 50/50. To further promote the appeal, the region of 6 synods
that we are a part of (region4) has issued a challenge to each of the 6 synods. $25 for each
individual Woman of the ELCA to reach beyond $25,000. If you would like to participate in
this appeal, send your donation to our treasurer Jewell Swinney, and make it out to
“Women of the ELCA” and place 25th
anniversary appeal in the memo line. All donations
go to the churchwide Women of the ELCA and there it will be split.
The anniversary will be celebrated until May 20, 2013. We will have plenty of time to
celebrate. More information and program material is in the works.
For where your treasure is by Nancy Giddings
Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves
break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do
not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. Matthew
6:19-21
These words have been running through my head and through my heart since I returned from the
Conference of Presidents in Chicago. I returned home with two tasks, one given to me by the churchwide
office in Chicago, and one that I gave myself. Both tasks are basically the same, to share what Women of
the ELCA is with churches in the Minneapolis Area Synod.
I was concerned when I heard about the budget shortfall that the churchwide expression of Women of
the ELCA experienced last year. I know that we are in the middle of some really tough financial times,
yet to me, that is not the reason for the shortfall. My strongest feeling is that we tend to take Women of
the ELCA for granted. I know that most of your congregational units do various events through the year;
bake sales, craft sales, garage sales, and dinners, there are many events. These are wonderful events, a
time of fun, fellowship and outreach in your community. I also know that the money raised from these
events goes to many wonderful places within your church and community, yet how many of you send
even a small portion of this money to Women of the ELCA? I am not asking that every church send all of
the money that they raise to Women of the ELCA, I am not asking that you send even half. What I am
asking is that you send some of your money. If you have a Thankoffering service, 100% of that is sent to
the churchwide offices. If you talk to my husband, he would be the first one to tell you that I hate talking
about money. I am very uncomfortable doing that, yet I strongly feel the need for this article.
As I have been in conversations and e-mails with board members and past presidents, I have heard
many things about our organization. The one that sticks in my mind the most is “maybe women don’t
need Women of the ELCA since they have more power in the church.” Wow, that stopped me in my
tracks and started me thinking. I need to speak from a very personal place in my heart and say that the
more that I do in the church, the more that I need Women of the ELCA.
I need the support, knowledge and fellowship that I receive from this organization. I need the many
studies that I can find on the website, I need my Daily Grace on my iPhone, I need my Gather magazine,
but most of all I need the women. I have so many mentors and friends within this organization. The gifts
that God has given me have been shaped and molded within the framework of Women of the ELCA. I
could not have served as the president of my church council had I not learned leadership skills from
Women of the ELCA. The more power that I have in the church, the more I need Women of the ELCA.
If you talk with many of the women in many of the churches in our synod, they will tell you that they
do not have “W/ELCA” in their church. I’m sure that this is very true. What they do have however is
some form of women’s ministries: circles, Bible studies, quilting groups, knitting group, so many
different ways to share Christ’s love. How many times has your congregational unit tapped into resources
that Women of the ELCA has to offer; Gather Bible study, online resources, Thankoffering services, even
a call to Linda, Inez, Val or anyone in the office for help? All of this is supported by money sent to
Women of the ELCA. In the Minneapolis Area Synod, we do our annual convention, services days,
leadership events and other things. This is all supported by you and your offering.
In the March issue of Gather magazine is a good article titled “Everything She Had” by The Rev.
Peter W. Marty. I would like to close with the closing paragraph from his article. “Every time we
unclench our fistfuls of wealth, we increase the odds of being able to receive the benefits of our Lord’s
sacrificial love. And when we do this, we are well on the way to becoming generous people.” My treasure
is with Women of the ELCA. Where is yours?
Nancy Giddings currently serves as president of the Minneapolis Area Synodical Women’s Organization.
A version of this article originally appeared in the newsletter of her synodical women’s organization.
