As the winter approaches and we recover from a year of wonderful celebrations and an unsettled economic outlook it has never been a better time to prepare our homes for snuggling up in front of the re, entertaining friends and family or simply enjoying the comfort of our own surroundings.

It isn’t all about spending lots of cash to get the perfect look and we are seeing some of our favourite brands introducing less expensive wallpapers to ease the expense of the transformation. The launch of Sion by Harlequin has been hugely popular, not only with its fresh young contemporary look but its a ordability. Sanderson Home is also a welcome sight as the new collection ‘Maycott’ delivers truly beautiful style and design expected from such a quintessentially British brand at good prices.

The autumn trends are really exciting, bringing the outside in with raw elements, edgy geometrics and painterly oral patterns.

We have continued to bring more exciting new brands to Wallpaperdirect and Andrew Martin, Carlucci di Chivasso, Hibou Home, Louise Body, Ralph Lauren and St.Vitus are among our favourites. We also have exciting new developments with the introduction of Harlequin lighting, rugs and more bedding accessories to help you get the complete look. Our newly updated fabrics area enables you to see fabrics from your favourite brands and we show you how they will look at your window with di erent headings – so much easier.

I hope the magazine will give you some inspiration to create the look that is just right for you.

An English woman’s home is her castle - enjoy it!

Home Sweet HomeThere was a ripple of excitement at wallpaperdirect when we heard the news... just as our favourite fashion designers have created diffusion lines that are chic but easy on the purse strings, Sanderson have launched HOME for furnishings with Sanderson HOME. Home Sweet Home

Sometimes re-decorating a room from scratch can feel like a big nancial investment, not least if you are design conscious, like

your look to be fully co-ordinated or want the nished scheme to stand the test of time. However, Sanderson have just made taking the plunge easier for those wanting their designer look on a thrifty budget. This internationally renowned brand with The Royal Warrant has developed a di usionline which o ers wallpapers in their unmistakable English style and quality at outstanding value, making the starting point for a new look highly accessible.

At wallpaperdirect, we’ve fallen in love with Maycott, their rst collection. In the true spirit of Sanderson, Maycott is quintessentially English in its subject matter, drawing upon the traditional English garden, with

owers, hedgerows and woodlands as timeless inspiration. Yet whilst some of the wallpapers are based on designs or ‘documents’ rediscovered from the extensive Sanderson archive,

the design team’s new interpretations feel contemporary and the colour palettes fresh. Furthermore, these medium scale patterns are also easy to use in both large interiors and small cottage scale spaces, all of which makes for e ortless decorating.

Angel Ferns is based on a collection of old botanical prints from the Sanderson archive depicting delicately painted ferns, yet the simple, bold arrangement of the repeat pattern gives the design a contemporary edge. Fleur Trellis, with its small scale leafy trellis dotted with tiny owers is perfect

alone or for contrasting with other wallpaper patterns and prints from the collection. Blossom Bough is an elegant trailing design that feels spring fresh and versatile enough to grace the walls of almost any room in the house. Whilst Lilacs, is a lively, feminine oral that’s perfect for a bedroom.

Our verdict is that not only are these papers easy to decorate with, live with and create a scheme around, the fact that the Sanderson team have designed this as a “paste the wall” collection mean they are easy to hang too.

With Maycott as the rst of many a ordable di usion collections that the Sanderson Studio will develop for HOME each year, it is easy to see how continually updating a room will be tempting. Yet as always with Sanderson, this is a collection that’s perfect for those seeking a soft contemporary look that will also stand the test of time.

In short, Maycott displays so many of the elements that have made Sanderson a must have brand for homes for over 150 years. Now suddenly creating a designer look at home for less seems so simple.

A New OpulenceWith a glorious colour palette and innovative e ects, the new collection from Designers Guild contains many elements of their trademark style, as well as inspiration for those seeking a little luxury.

With their use of vibrant but livable hues, tumbling orals and clever co-ordinating designs, Designers Guild brings life, zest and personality to interiors. All wrapped in a style that is unmistakably theirs, this season’s wallcoverings are no exception. These are brand new looks to invigorate homes and inspire decorators everywhere, that look poised to set a new luxurious trend.

This season the Castellani collection brings organic shades amidst vivid tones and clever, innovative techniques that achieve new luxe nishes to explore, giving even more choice for walls than ever before. These are papers that make grand statements alone, or can be layered in the brand’s

trademark style, to create a fully co-ordinated look.

At wallpaperdirect, we always like to see something completely new, and this season we’ve been inspired by the new Saraille papers from this collection which feel exotic. This series of stunning dip dye linen designs with intense colour shading fade from the deepest brights to the purest white. All cleverly created as a dynamic digitally printed wallpaper panel in ve colour ways, these are tones that remind us of an Indian summer, perfect for bringing a sense of visual warmth and vibrancy to interiors. This, however, is not the only unexpected design in the Castellani collection.

Geometrics are embellished with lustre at Designers Guild this Autumn/Winter. Grautrait & Vever, dynamic geometric designs, feature a shadowed small-scale diamond pattern that creates the illusion of depth. Grautrait is embellished with a light re ective textured surface, and Vever with ne beading. Giuliano, another design, features geometric lozenge motifs printed onto holographic paper that creates an iridescent e ect that changes with the light.

For something equally as lavish, yet more architectural, Celestine and Florentine are wallpapers that emulate the e ect of cool marble. Conversely Castellani and Tesserae add opulence with ocked velvets, the latter of which, has a matt nish and is embossed with a tiled e ect.

If it is the more intricate designs that capture your imagination then we recommend that you also explore the fourth instalment of The Royal Collection of Wallpapers by Designers Guild - Rosa Chinensis.

Inspired by the private residences during the reign of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as well as the Chinese rooms at Buckingham Palace, these wallpapers will add luxury to every Englishman’s castle.

In Perfect Harmony

For the bedroom, Harlequin’s own luxurious brand bed linen in 180 thread count cotton percale, has been devised to complement their best selling designs. We love the smart Bali Stripe Charcoal Bedding, with its signature Harlequin stripe in varying widths on one side of the duvet cover, and a two-colour horizontal stripe on the reverse. The oxford pillowcases with a vertical stripe and accent stitching complete the look.

Orsina is another rm favourite. This statement design of overblown blooms is based on a beautiful fabric design from the Folia collection. The duvet cover o ers two looks with a profusion of owerheads on one side or a vertical multi-stripe on the reverse, piped in decadent purple. With a choice of two pillowcase options in a bright stripe or the oral pattern with a plain reverse, it is possible to modify the look to suit your mood, or when used in a guest bedroom, the personality of your visitor!

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the latest collection from Zo any has been devised

from scratch it feels so full of energy, yet you would be very, very wrong. These striking, rich, bold designs were rst painted straight onto walls by craftsmen in Elizabethan times to decorate the homes of the wealthy. The clear, vibrant palette that was so expensive to achieve, re ected their social status. Over time, many of the paintings were inevitably lost, yet a handful have been salvaged or revealed behind panelling in grand houses during renovations. Melissa White, a mural artist and specialist in Elizabethan painted decoration describes these as “buried treasures, laying dormant for over 400 years.”

It was White and her colleague David Cuttmore who collaborated with the design house Zo any in order to bring these forgotten jewels back to life. In her Hastings studio, Melissa White and Cuttmore worked with the original ‘documents’ to carefully reproduce the magni cent designs by hand. Often working from a small, rare fragment in bad condition, White sees her work as “a way of keeping original Elizabethan style alive and making it accessible to the public. It’s my mission to preserve them.” For whilst a small amount of Elizabethan designs are available to view in museums, they

have never to her knowledge been reproduced in any way. White

and Cuttmore were therefore keen to reproduce the designs accurately and to capture their spirit, style and hand-painted look, including the brush strokes

in each of their modern day interpretations, which they did with Zo any’s expertise.

White was responsible for translating the original paintings to create a repeat pattern for wallpaper “taking a tree out here and there” to make the design really work and being mindful not to lose the ‘imperfection’ of the originals “which would have followed the slope of a ceiling and felt looseand organic. It was a challenge to keep the energy and variations within structure that a wallpaper demands,” she reveals “it didn’t work if it was too tidy.” Following the recreation in their original colour palettes - such as vibrant Merchant House Stripe, which was discovered in the home of a silk merchant - Cuttmore, White and Zo any devised further colourways including both dramatic and soft, muted tones, to appeal to homeowners of many tastes today.

“The exciting thing is that the designs are very modern,” says White of the resulting collection with its faithful 16th century origins. “There is a fashion for large scale orals, forest scenes and adult fairytale settings,” she claims of those times and today. Sa ron Walden Tracery is a paper based on an “incredibly fashionable and sophistcated ‘antickework’ design in Elizabethan times,” she notes by way of example, “and today looks contemporary and industrial.” Who else could have envisioned that 16th century design could be so versatile or so appealing for homes today?

Quintessentially British, classic in design and durable in texture, Lincrusta is also adding contemporary designs and technological improvements to its wallcoverings this season, making it a must have in our books!

In Timeless TraditionWe’ve all seen it and no doubt we’ve admired it, but not all of us may have have considered Lincrusta as an option for our homes. Yet not only is Lincrusta versatile, it’s a durable decorative option for walls too.

The brainchild of manufacturer, entrepreneur and inventor, Frederick Walton, whose father pioneered Linoleum ooring in the 1860s, Lincrusta was devised by adapting the hugely successful oorcovering to create a highly durable textured wallcovering, to replicate (and often replace) painstaking artisan plasterwork. Its durability, sanitary properties and ornate e ects found favour with the Victorian middle-classes and it was found transforming not just the interiors of homes but everything from railway carriages to royal palaces and even The White House.

An international product from the outset, Lincrusta is known to have been produced in the early 20th century in France, Germany and the United States, as well as in the UK where it is still made today. At a purpose-built factory in Morecambe,

Lancashire, Lincrusta is produced traditionally from natural materials using many of the original rollers, with the same care and attention to detail as when it was rst produced. However, this is not to imply that the product has stood still.

Along with the launch of a new pattern book in 2011 came two new designs: Cleopatra, a large-scale classical ogee

ideal for creating striking feature e ects; and Aphrodite, an all-over oral trail, inspired by the blooms of Kew Gardens, set on a textured background. New for 2012 is Kelmscott, a stylised Jacobean trail inspired by the natural forms and ora and fauna typical of the Arts & Crafts Movement. These three bold designs complement a stable of traditional and contemporary e ects, some of which date back to the 1800’s.

Today, Lincrusta’s development of a Surface Degreaser (to reduce the time from installation to decorating) and a decorator’s specialist tool kit, makes it even easier to add timeless elegance to walls at home.

Want to give a new lease of life to your kitchen in one easy fi x? Look no further than the power of wallpaper to transform the room that we as a nation are spending more and more time in.

The Essential

The kitchen, for many of us, has become the heart of the home. Once a functional space for cooking and washing, today’s households often favour open plan living or larger family rooms that incorporate dining and informal seating areas. Whatever their size, our kitchens are now multi-functional spaces; a meeting place, a cosy eating area for family suppers, where you bring a friend to console them with tea and chocolate cake, where we

read the newspapers on Saturday mornings, somewhere the kids can draw and play and an entertaining space where guests can enjoy a glass of wine and conversation, whilst you prepare dinner. In short, we’ve probably never spent so much time in our kitchens and they have never therefore, deserved so much of our attention.

The way that we decorate our kitchens helps us not only to define how we utilise the space but determines the look and feel of the environment we are striving for and feel comfortable in.

Where we prepare, cook and eat our food needs to feel clean and enticing and there is no better way to simply achieve this goal than with wallcoverings. Newly wallpapered walls provide a fresh surface in both the physical and visual sense. All wallpapers are suitable for kitchens but washable papers are available and sometimes desirable for homes where sticky fingers or particularly messy cooks jeopardise them staying pristine. They simply wipe clean with

a damp sponge. Skirting boards have traditionally also protected walls from scuffs, muddy paws and general wear and tear. Wallcoverings can also set the mood and tone of the room. For a crisp, bright feel, soft pastels and ice cream tones are not only fashionable but feel deliciously fresh. Use stronger colours such as tomato reds and liquorice to add drama and soft pea greens and rich spice notes to inject warmth.

are almost endless and can be used to enhance or contrast with every style of kitchen furniture and units. Trailing florals and full blown blooms can work equally as well in rustic country settings or when used to soften contemporary styles. Oriental prints reflect one of the latest trends on the fashion catwalks this season and complement sleek kitchen designs and highly polished surfaces. Geometric shapes and contemporary designs with a Scandinavian or retro edge feel fresh for 2012.

Whilst pattern can be used in abundance, the kitchen is also a room where a feature wall can be highly effective, bringing a vista or scene to a room without a view, a pattern to contemplate on an otherwise plain wall, at mealtimes, or to define either a cooking or dining space. Perfect also for those using pattern in this room for the first time.

It’s not jewels on our fi ngers that we’re craving this season,it’s for our walls. We’re being spoilt rotten by Kandola’s latest collection at wallpaperdirect.

Diamond LifeFor those seeking something truly special for their home this autumn/winter we have just the idea...

Why not show how much you love your home by embellishing its walls with the most sumptuous designs? We’re thinking of dressing walls with a scattering of crystals, in luxurious silks, mirror-like foils and fabulous ocks in beautiful tones.

To strike a note that is chic rather than bling, look no further than the new collection of wallpapers from Kandola to get the look.

Kandola are a company who have specialised in crystallizing fabrics for over a decade. Having developed their own in-house crystallizing production, Kandola more recently developed technological innovations in order to apply crystals to high quality wallpapers using their specialised craftsmanship.

Their rst unique wallpaper collection called First Love, was launched in 2007. This combined stunning Swarovski crystals with rich velvet touch ock and oral designs.

Adore was the name of the collection that followed, featuring beautiful

orals as well introducing stunning geometric designs.

The Jewel Collection is Kandola’s third and current wallpaper collection and comprises of eight wallcoverings that are sure to add a touch of subtle glamour to any interior.

Pushing the boundaries of technology and design in their eld, Kandola’s inhouse team have succeeded in showcasing the nest crystal elements manufactured by Swarovski on a number of exquisite backrounds.

Choose from sumptuous ocks, mirror-like foils and layered inks that give a trompe l’oeil e ect of slubbed silk all available in a number of colourways.

We love the way that the multi-faced crystals shimmer as light travels across these papers. From the cluster of crystals at the centre of the circular Moonstone design to the embroidered Paisley pattern that twinkles on a soft background, and the seemingly random sophisticated scattering of Swarovski crystals across Silka, a wallpaper with a handwoven silk e ect, each paper including the Jewelled Damask studded with lavish crystals, achieves a di erent e ect.

KANDOLA

Whilst they are all highly desirable, two of the wallpaper designs feature a layer of beads and crystals which are applied by skilled hand craftsmanship and subtly change colour on the wall.

Technological innovations combined with high quality craftsmanship have enabled Kandola to create a unique interiors e ect, giving subtle brilliance to walls.

Choosing just one wallpaper from this collection is therefore tricky. As if they were precious gemstones, we are tempted by them all!

Perfect MatchChoosing the right wallpaper for your home can seem daunting when so many patterns, prints and motifs are available. Here’s how to navigate the trends, the visual effects and fi nd the right style for you.

“I love the big orals on my neighbours lounge wall, but I’d never dare have it in my own house.” “That beach hut print is fantastic, but wouldn’t I get bored of it?” “I’d really like to jazz up my study with something di erent, but I don’t know what.” At wallpaperdirect, we’ve been witness to all kinds of concerns from decorators who are just too nervous to take the plunge to use pattern, or bolder pattern in their homes. They want to, but they feel that plain wallpapers, very subtle prints or even magnolia painted walls are much safer and

easier to live with. They’re often concerned that a pattern will make their rooms look small, that they don’t have the right furnishings or furniture to go with it, or that the results will be di cult to live with, but all of these preconceptions couldn’t be further from the case. The other problem, some feel, is that with so much choice on the market, they don’t know how to start thinking about what might work best. That’s why we are here to help!

Firstly, patterned wallpaper allows you to add instant impact and personality to any room. This is especially useful

and cost e ective in a minimal space such as an o ce that just requires a desk or a simply furnished guest bedroom. In this case, let the walls do the talking! Embrace colour, interesting textures or a themed motif and enjoy the e ects of a big transformation that’s simple to achieve. Patterned walls can also be a wonderful distraction. Add a fabulous or fun themed paper to an otherwise bland bathroom or a simple kitchen and its suddenly special.

Of course pattern can be subtle, re ned and elegant too. Use it to gently draw attention to a focal point such as a replace in a living room. Bathe a dining room in soft, natural light bounced from a paper with a mirror-like foil or metallic background and pull together a comprehensive look by choosing a design that complements your furniture in tone and style.

Most people abide by the traditional decorating rule that says large scale patterns should only be used in big spaces and dark colours should only be used in light rooms, but we dare to disagree! Just as jewel like colours can bring a cocooning warmth to small spaces, large prints can add drama and a great sense of fun. Use extra large patterns and overscaled motifs when you want to enhance diminutive proportions, make a grand statement and ll a small space with character. Using this device on just one feature wall is often enough, although thereis nothing quite like an overblown oral on walls and even a ceiling, to create a glorious treasure box in a small washroom.

Of course there are times when patterned wallpaper is just the thing for enhancing a sense of space. A tiny spriggy motif in a light colour is the classic way. Using vertical stripes to add length is another. Try extending the wallpaper within a room to the hallway or landing leading into it. Wallpaper wardrobes or cupboard doors in the same design as the walls to create a seamless run and thus extend the visual line. Just remember to remove doorknobs and handles rst. Sand and paint wooden handles in a matching tone before replacing.

Wallpaper also has the ability to play with our sense of perspective. Panoramic papers create a view where there isn’t a window, drawing the eye to the scene beyond. Why not try a

relaxing vista behind a roll top bath for a little luxury? Or a panorama to disguise an otherwise functional space such as a hallway? Geometric prints can add visual length. Try running these down the walls of a long landing or hallway, to really celebrate their proportions.

Playing with wallpaper e ects needn’t be con ned to pattern and print, with the latest innovations in technology, wallpaper has never been better at imitating other architectural e ects. Add visual warmth with faux wood, brickwork and coloured tiles, and remember that any design with a horizontal element such as exposed bricks, will have the visual e ect of widening the space. The key to decorating with these papers is to imagine they are the material that they imitate.

Mixing It Up

Often wallpaper designers devise a collection with a palette of patterns that purposefully work together, yet many of us really only consider using one pattern in each room. Whilst there is a resurgence of the 1980s trend for wallpapering all walls and even the ceiling in the exact same print, using a variety of patterns in one space can create many visually stunning e ects.

Use di erent patterns in the same colour tones to add interest and variety to a space, or to create a ow from one room into another, which is particularly e ective if the rooms are adjoining, but you want to de ne their functions. The result is often one of increased visual depth as well as impressive co-ordination! If you are decorating above and below a dado rail, keep the bolder design to the bottom half for balance, or choose a co-ordinating plain paper to work with a strong pattern.

Another intriguing trick is to paper walls in the same print in opposite colourways, which is pleasing on the eye when they are butted together. This works particularly well in highly contrasting tones, and is useful where a very dark paper would have overpowered a room if it covered all four walls.

Of course another easy to achieve the look is to mix the pattern or motif of your wallpaper with the fabric used in curtains, bedding or furnishings in a room. On the wallpaperdirect website you will nd some collections where designers have done this for you, whilst the e ect to visitors will be of a deceptively creative, yet

informal scheme. Mix orals with ginghams, stripes with polka dots and all patterns in between. If the variations are from the same designer, or your own colour palette is consistent, you can not go far wrongin layering prints.

With such a compendium of tricks, wallpaper books really are the decorators toolbox, creating so many di erent looks to enhance a room in so many ways. So...are you still rmly stuck on that magnolia?

1. Always use a good adhesive; it will make the job easier. We always recommend ready mixed adhesives as the recipe has just the right amount of water and glue to hold the paper in place.

2. Always remove any glue from the surface immediately, once it has dried it won’t come o !

3. Remove the glue from the ceiling or woodwork, if you don’t in time you will notice it go yellow and spoil the job.

4. Read the label – most papers, if not paste the wall, must be soaked for at least 5 minutes – be patient and you won’t get bubbles.

5. Flock or fabric papers must not get glue on them, put an even amount on the wall, not too much so that it squeezes through the joins. Use a felt roller to smooth out air bubbles.

1. Don’t get paste on the table – it is easy to prevent if you move your paper to the edge of the table and always brush your glue away from you.

A POSTCARD HOMEWe all strive to create homes with personality, and the way that many of us decorate re ects both our personal journeys and our passions. Sophie Conran’s new collaboration with Arthouse reveals beautiful designs that express her own special memories.

ARTHOUSE

It was Sophie Conran’s personal memories that formed the inspiration for her latest collaboration with Arthouse. Her joyful childhood inthe English countryside, the wonderment of moving to the big city and the excitement of independent travels are all re ected in nine beautiful wallpaper designs.

Whilst they all have very personal memories at their core, this collection features designs which tap into universal experiences as well as adventures we wish we’d had.

The rst of the glorious papers is Coconut Grove, named after Sophie’s travels with her formidable aunt. Together they journeyed the length and breadth of India visiting textile factories and craftspeople. She experienced the warmth, colour and vibrancy of this unique country. The evocative palm trees come in a range of exquisite colours: luxurious red, delightful green and blues of every shade. The tinted micas and metallics bring this magical and tropical design to life.

‘London Lights’, ‘Opening Doors’ and ‘Balustrade’ are reminiscent of Sophie’s excitement at the rst ush of independence, exploring London and travels abroad with friends. ‘London Lights’ is a bustling scene of city life. The raised texture and warm metallic glow give a captivating

Carefully crafted in ock to give texture and depth of eld, this stunning design comes in exquisite creams, greys and black.

KEEPING THE MOMENTUMFollowing the resounding success of their Momentum collection last year, Harlequin have created a ‘boutique range’ for this season called Momentum II. Can you live without it?

If you’re seeking a classic look that feels suited to a contemporary home and will endure for years to come, then this small but perfectly formed range from Harlequin is a must.

Momentum II is a chic ‘boutique’ range which follows the success of the original Momentum wallpapers that Harlequin launched last year. These are opulent, textural wallcoverings with both architectural appeal and elegance.

A rich, moody colour palette and clever use of textural nishes such as rich metallic re ective inks and amazing light catching glass beads, ensures that this collection of eight wallpapers have lasting appeal.

Choose from the deeply textured Flint design, which emulates the impression of int walls to the striking new Array stripe, which, with its woven fabric e ect, appears warm and comforting with no harsh lines, from this sophisticated collection. For a truly striking design, Leaf, with its stunning motif which is available as a standard non-woven paper, or scattered with glistening glass beads which catch the light, is the nal word in elegant understatement. Perfect for homes with taste!

design styles from the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian eras through to the present day. There is something for all styles and scales of homes on the colour chart from town to country, cosy or spacious, well lit or shady interiors.

Albany is available in 8 nishes as well as a primer and undercoat, it is possible to bring colour and a professional nish to all areas of your home.

Colours of AutumnMoody teal blues and vibrant burnt oranges are the perfect colours for your home this season. Choose the very best tones at designerpaint.co.uk.

It’s one of our favourite times of the year for exploring the paint charts at designerpaint. Whilst some are investing in a big squishy new duvet, a luxurious cashmere throw for the sofa or a wood burning stove, we know that one of the quickest, easiest and most e ective ways to bring some visual warmth to our homes is with paint.

What could feel more cocooning than walls painted in rich, dark tones and accented with a vibrant burst of colour? For us, this season its all about teal blues. Choose from the very deepest inky tones through to dusty chalky blues and contrast with burnt amber hues for a palette that feels luxurious and on trend.

This is a look that works fabulously well in the living room, dining room, study or bedroom of period and contemporary homes. Imagine an o ce with a gentleman’s club feel, a dining room with a boutique hotel look, or a bedroom in restful midnight teal.

Break the design rules and consider painting a small washroom in a petrol toned teal for a stunning e ect, a shady room in a rich blue tone to evoke a winter mood and to cheat the e ect of antique panneling as seen here, concealing a simple mdf construction. With results that look sophisticated and inviting, you won’t want to leave home!

Charting SuccessGetting the right tone and shade of paint for your walls can be tricky. Little Greene have devised a very clever solution to make the process much easier...

Have you ever stood back to admire your freshly painted walls and been disappointed with the colour? Or found that the shade you carefully chose doesn’t quite match the fabric you were so meticulous to co-ordinate it with? Those clever chaps at Little Greene understand, and have just made choosing the right colour for your walls a whole lot easier! Their genius yet simple solution is a colour card with a di erence for 2012.

Firstly, this is a hand- nished colour-card that features samples of actual paint (rather than factory-matched ink), for accuracy. Next, the samples of each colour are made into unique ‘ ying chips’ rather than stuck at to the card. This enables the colours to be viewed away from a stark white background, which can a ect how dark or light shade looks on a chart in comparison to a large expanse of wall.

Finally, these free oating ‘chips’ are also handy for placing directly on to fabric swatches, wallpaper samples and other paint colours to help make nding a perfect match simple.

Bringing together 164 of the company’s most popular hues from their ‘Colours of England’, ‘Colour Scales’ and ‘Retrospectives’ collections on one chart, this colour card acts as a compendium to over 300 years of decoration. Whether your home is Georgian, Victorian, 1970s or contemporary, you can choose from colours that are historically authentic or fabulously fashionable. From on-trend ice-cream tones that look good enough to eat to deliciously deep damsons from the history books, which will you choose?

Best Supporting RoleJames Bond, Harry Potter and Downton Abbey have all used Mylands paint to decorate

the sets of their silver screen and television productions, yet their role, as well as their product has been upheld as the trade’s ‘best kept secret’...until now, that is!

We unveil their range as a leading light in the domestic scene too.

Mylands is one of those brands that is so good, that industry professionals and master

decorators have kept it a secret. Yet whilst few of us will have heard of their paint, or indeed used it to decorate our homes, many of us will have unwittingly seen their colours on the silver screen, in the James Bond

and Harry Potter series, as well as on television in Downton Abbey and in numerous theatre productions. Despite holding a prestigious Royal Warrant, Mylands has remained behind the scenes for generations, but it is possible to use paint deserving of a BAFTA at home!

Having produced paint for more than 120 years, Mylands, a family business, is Britain’s oldest paint manufacturer. “Even before the emergence of Pinewood Studios in 1935, Mylands was an established name within the British Film Industry,” says its Managing Director Dominic Myland.

Today, many of Mylands paints are still made to original formulations using natural earth pigments, having developed their emulsions in the 1950s using the highest quality resins and pigments, which is now rare in paint production. This gives the paint a unique quality ideally suited to scenic construction in the theatre, television and lm industry. It also makes the paint eco-friendly.

For homes, there is more good news. Mylands’ ‘Colours Of London Range,’ available at designerpaint.co.uk, comprises of a fully researched palette boasting integrity. What’s more, all of the paints are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, so that you don’t need to buy two di erent tins, and the technical speci cations of the paint makes it so durable that you can wipe or even scrub painted walls and they will not discolour or fade.

No wonder it’s t for the Queen, and the movies, it’s time for Mylands to take a starring role in our homes too!
