1 The Raider Call starecently spoke with Ms. Rook about her new posiƟon as the school librarian. We asked what her new posiƟon was and if she liked it. We also discussed when and how she found out she wanted to be a librarian, what her daily rouƟne is, and the ups and downs of her new posiƟon. We found out that Ms. Rook has a lot more jobs than puƫng the books away. Ms. Rook enjoys being the librarian because she likes introducing books to kids that don’t like reading. She realized that she wanted to be a librarian in 1986 when she was living in the Philippines on an army base. Some people were puƫng together a library and Ms. Rook was asked to help. Her love for books and showing kids the way to reading has grown ever since. Being the school librarian has a lot of responsibiliƟes. She has to set up the mobile lab, get textbooks out and ready for check out if needed, check books in and out, and put all of Ms. Rook Scores New Position as Head Librarian By Evelyn Robertson Wamego Middle School November 20, 2015 Volume 4, Issue 2 The Raider Call Special Points of Interest: Ms. Rook Scores New Position as Head Librarian Brave Soldiers Are You an Outsider? As the school librarian comes many benets and downsides. A benet of being the librarian is seeing kids get excited about books. She gets excited because she loves reading and sharing a common interest. A down side is when kids don’t return the books they checked out or when they turn them in late. This is frustraƟng because Ms. Rook has to track kids and books down. She also can’t do her job when the kids don’t return books, because she has to put them away in the correct place. In conclusion, Ms. Rook loves being the school librarian because she loves sharing her love for reading. She does a lot more than we think she does. She helps custodians and teachers out when they need it and sets up the mobile lab. Being the librarian has many benets which includes seeing kids excited about books and sharing her love for reading. A down side is when kids don’t return her books. He was also one of the speakers at the assembly. Mr. Topliis a big supporter of Veterans’ Day. He honors and respects all of the people in war and who have served. In the assembly he talked about the history behind Veterans’ Day and how Kansas is a big part of it. Students learned the deeper meaning of the history of Veterans’ Day. The one thing he told us to do was that we should just stop and say thank you to a soldier you see in your everyday life. That could change the soldier’s whole world and make them feel good. The 8 th grade got to stay aŌer the assembly and talk personally with the soldiers. To do this they had to prepare 3 quesƟons to ask. 8 th grader Karlyn Flynn said that the one thing that made her think dierently about Veterans’ Day was when they were talking about how they had to say goodbye to their family to go overseas. Veterans’ Day is very important to all the soldiers and there family’s. And we were honored to have members of the 31 group come by and talk to us. Thank you, Veterans of America.

Science lovers are pumped up for their new super cool science teach‐er. Ms. Larson is the new 7th grade sci‐ence and advanced science teacher. She is a great and fun teacher. She was a joy to interview and a joy to listen to. We mostly talked about her connec on to WMS.   First we asked whether or not she liked WMS and she said, “I love WMS because it’s posi ve, fun, and filled with challenging lessons that aren’t just for school but for life too.” Ms. Larson said.  “My favorite thing about WMS is the students because they are so nice and unique.” Ms. Lar‐son said. Being a science teacher is fun and that means that you certainly have some choices for your favorite thing about your class. ‘’My favorite thing about my class is the labs, because they are a fun way to learn.” Ms. Lar‐son said.

What teacher doesn’t have a favorite unit? Ms. Larson’s favorite unit is the DNA unit. “My favorite unit is the DNA unit because it’s cool and fun to learn about the different DNA of differ‐ent animals, plants, and people.” Ms. Larson said.    Every teacher has a favorite thing about their class that they really like.  “I like working with kids and help‐ing them.” Said Ms. Larson. Here at WMS  we have a lot of technology and Ms. Larson has her opinion about it. “I would want more technology to do tests and ac vi es.” said Ms. Larson. Every student has a favorite thing to do in their classes. “My student’s favorite thing to do in my science class is labs because they're fun and interes ng.   Ms. Larson is a great teacher and she's fun. She loves to help and teach. Ms. Larson is also interes ng to listen and talk to.

In Language Arts the 8th grade finished the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Miss Reed is the 8th grade Language Arts Teacher and has taught this book for years. She taught it at Hesston, Junc on City, and now she is teaching it here at Wamego.

The 8th graders were reading The Outsiders be‐cause it was in Miss Reed’s curriculum map. The book was a good choice for the students because it was at their reading level. Most of them thought that it was a good book. Trevin S., an 8th grader, said, “I thought that it was a good experience.” The book takes place in Tulsa, Oklaho‐ma. “Greasers” are people that don’t have a lot of money and live on the shady part of town, and “Socs” have lots of money and they think they can do whatever and get away with anything they want. The “Socs” and the “Greasers” are in a constant ba le of who’s the best. The students

Are You an Outsider? By Trexton Anderson

learned not to judge people so quickly. Kelly Lonker, another 8th grade student men oned, “The Outsid‐ers has a really good message and it was exci ng.” Some of the people in the world today are s ll like the “Socs” and “Greasers.” Miss Reed enjoyed watching the kids read this book. The Outsiders is one of her favorite books, but, because she teaches so many great books, it is hard for her to have a fa‐vorite one.

In conclusion, The Outsiders contains many life lessons that students can relate to. Miss Reed has taught the book for three years at three different schools.  She really enjoys teaching and interac ng with kids. According to what she and the students said, it was an effec ve book and the lesson was evident about not judging peo‐ple so quickly.

The Raider Call Choir Changes with Mr. Wildin

By Sara Bouck   If you have not heard, there are changes in the choir class this year. Mr. Wildin was asked ques ons about why he separated the boys and girls choir. Mr. Wildin was also asked about himself and his new piano player. Raider Call was excited about interviewing Mr. Wildin.

In the past, 7th and 8th grade boys and girls performed together in choir. This year the boys and girls choir separated because boys are at a different voice range. The boys and girls might have concerts together in the future. If they perform together, their concerts will be the last concert and the Christmas concert. Mr. Wildin’s accompanist is Miss Anne. Mr. Wildin is not the first choir teacher to do this format.

Mr. Wildin’s favorite piece of music is “My Love is so Fair. “This is his favorite piece because it allows him to teach them more. Mr. Wildin started teaching at the age of 25 in 2008. Mr. Wildin was in‐

terested in teaching choir when he was 19. Mr. Wildin was interested he in choir because likes to see peoples voices improve. The first concert was October 26 at 7:00. Feast of Carols is December 7, 2015.

This year both of the football teams had a tre‐mendous season with the 7th and 8th grade teams end‐ing their season with winning records. The 7th grade had 3 wins with 3 losses while the 8th grade ended their season with 6 wins and 1 loss on their record. Isaak Meyer said the favorite part of his year was in‐tercep ng a pass in the first game of the year against Abilene. Next year we are hoping that everyone keeps playing football and ge ng be er. Maybe next year the 7th and 8th grade can win the league.

Dragons have entered the school; in fact they’re wai ng in Mr. Petermann’s language arts room.  Mr. Petermann’s students have just finished reading a story en tled The Smallest Dragon Boy.  The story is about how a small boy realizes his strengths and becomes a dragon rider, even though he is teased and obtains a broken leg.

Dragons? By Kaia Miller

The short story was picked because of the amount of road signs. Road signs are things such as “aha” moments, words of the wiser, memory mo‐ments, and so on. Sadly the dragons have le  and won’t come back un l next year. That’s right, they have now finished the story and are analyzing  it. The story was fun and I hope the students enjoyed it.

The Raider Call Thoughts of a Sixth Grader

By Jessi Frazier-Brown Did you know the 8th Grade Teams and 7th Grade Teams combined are 13 wins and 7 tough losses as of No‐vember 11? The head coach is Mr. Petermann and it’s his 11th year coaching basketball. There are 3 assistant coaches, Mr. Topliff, Ms. Kabriel, and Ms. Swisher. Mr. Topliff is the 7th grade “A” Team coach and Ms. Kabriel is the 7th grade “B” team coaches along with Ms. Swisher. Recently we spoke with Mr. Petermann about this season.   Mr. Petermann is excited about this upcoming sea‐son because of all the energy that the girls have. Mr. Peter‐mann’s goal as the year proceeds is for the 8th graders to improve on the tough 3rd place finish last year and for the 7th grade is to help bond the girls together and work together. All the coaches want the girls to improve on their confidence level throughout the year in game‐like situa ons. This is the most 7th grade coaches have worked with in their experience of  coaching. For the first  me ever, there are two 7th grade “B” teams. As to why there are two “B” teams, Mr. Peter‐mann responded, “We valued the girls so much and their ability and playing  me we wanted to make sure we see im‐provement.”   Petermann is so far really happy about this season. He and the other coaches are really ecsta c about what this season holds. The coaches believe if you come with a great a tude each day and ready to prac ce and play you will suc‐ceed. Come and support the Lady Raider’s basketball games!

Shooting for NCKL By Kaley Schmidt

Raider Call recently interviewed Jaden Fra‐zier ‐Brown about being new to WMS. Jaden stated that there are some quali es that she really enjoys about being in middle school and there are a few things that she dislikes.   Jaden’s favorite thing about being in middle school is, as opposed to being at west, that you get to walk from class to class instead of si ng in the same desk, in the same classroom, with the same teacher all day long. Also Jaden enjoys having a lock‐er with a lock on it, not only to prevent people from stealing her stuff but also because she likes using a dial lock. Lastly she likes the fact that she gets to see her sister Jessi, even if she doesn’t always acknowledge her in the hallways, she likes seeing her throughout her day as a 6th grader. A couple things that Jaden said that she dislikes is the amount of homework and how much more responsibility they carry than they did in 5th grade at west.   We’ve learned from Jaden that being a 6th grader has a lot of quali es that she enjoys and there is only one thing that she truly dislikes but she told us that she understands why they have so much homework. She said that it’s to help us with the things we learn in class and to help us get more in‐forma on not only at school but also at home.

Recently, WMS’s Mul me‐dia staff interviewed and welcomed Kayden Higgins, a new 7th grade stu‐dent. As we interviewed her, we found out many interes ng things about her move. We are glad she is here and making a difference in our school!

Kayden moved from Man‐ha an, KS. We asked her what the best and worst part about moving to a new school was and why. She said, “The best part was mee ng new peo‐ple.” the worst part was leaving her friends because they were close to her. Kayden liked that at WMS; the teachers were more interac ve and mo vated to help out the students compared to her other school. A few new things Kayden encountered at WMS are that the kids are friendlier and everyone knows everyone. Some things she misses about her old

school are some of her friendly teachers and great friends she had. She played volleyball for WMS and she liked playing with different peo‐ple, having a new coach, having a new coaching style, and playing with people that have the same interests as her. Although it may be terrifying, Kayden does enjoy being around new people and new teachers.

In conclusion, Kayden, along with a lot of other new stu‐dents, is a great addi on to our school. They make our school diverse in many ways and a be er environ‐ment for our students and our teach‐ers. Kayden is one of many students that have changed our school. It’s nice to meet new people and make new friends for a change, because change is a good thing!

Give New Students a Warm WMS Welcome By Maci Beachler

Recently in science, the 7th graders worked on a cell project. The students made a plant or animal cell. Some students wanted to make animal cells because they are just like our cells and they wanted to see what their cells looks like. Others made a plant cell because they like to see what exactly is growing in their yard.

We interviewed a 7th grade student who also made the cell project. She was a few ques‐ons  over  the  project. When  asked  if  she  en‐

joyed making the cell, she said, “Yes because it’s a  good  way  to  learn  about  cells.”  Then  asked what  materials  she  used,  she  answered  “A Styrofoam  ball,  beads  and  pipe  cleaners.” We think kids enjoyed making their own animal and plant cells, because they liked seeing what a cell looks like.
