CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Welcome everyone to the 2016 Wansbeck Music Festival with all the old favourites plus some new ones to be enjoyed. Steel Pans are now a big feature of our Festival and with 14 Steel Bands plus a number of solos and ensembles entering we have arranged 2 Steel Pan sessions for the first time. This year we have reintroduced the Composition class, but widened it to include all disciplines not just recorders. We are also looking forward to hearing the Ceilidh bands and Folk Bands and only the second Rock Band to enter the Festival. We receive very generous support from Morpeth Town Council who award an annual grant plus a Bursary to send a performer from Morpeth to the European Youth Music Summer School, an experience of great benefit to the recipient and one that has been greatly enjoyed by all who have attended in the past. Ashington Town Council kindly give us a grant towards expenses in their area and the Potland Trust repeated their grant towards the cost of advertising. We are extremely grateful to all these organisations. Without them the Wansbeck Music Festival would cease to exist. Now, sit back and enjoy listening to all the young performers. Eileen Elliott February 2016

OUR ADJUDICATOR The adjudicator is a member of the

British & International Federation of Festivals

Margaret J. Smith Born and brought up in Skipton, North Yorkshire and an enthusiastic participant in local festivals from a very young age, Margaret studied piano with Dame Fanny Waterman, then violin and piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Following this, she held a wide variety of teaching posts culminating in 19 years as Director of Music at one of Yorkshire’s most prestigious girls’ schools, entering students very successfully for national and regional competitions and making significant contributions to the

musical life of Leeds. She was a moderator in both performance and composition for fourteen years with an external examining board.

She has maintained her private piano practice teaching to an advance level and has always had a passionate interest in vocal music, choral in particular, resulting in performances with both adults and children. She was the founder conductor of the Chippendale Singers, a chamber choir with a wide-ranging repertoire currently enjoying success in the Yorkshire area. She enjoys coaching both groups and individuals in workshops and master classes.

Her enthusiasm for the festival movement and its value in musical education has resulted in her receiving increasing numbers of invitations to adjudicate throughout the UK.

PLATFORM PRESENTATION

The British & International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech has issued the following advice to competitors:- A Festival is an occasion when you want to do your best in every way. Platform deportment is a very important part of your performance. Performers can greatly add to the enjoyment of everyone by a pleasing and relaxed appearance. A performer who is at ease puts the audience at ease. Dress-- Flamboyant clothes should be avoided. A well groomed, neat appearance is more essential than fashion clothes. While it is appreciated if choirs take the trouble to obtain choir uniform, adjudicators judge on musical grounds first and only a very slight percentage of a mark would be given for special dress. Performers should sit near the front for the entire class in which they are competing. If you have to use a music stand, try to place it so that it does not obscure the audience's view of you. A performance starts before the first note and finishes after the last one. Wait quietly until the adjudicator is ready and take a few deep breaths, so that you begin feeling comfortable. A slight bow to the adjudicator and audience at the end is a small courtesy and helps to round off the performance. Don't forget to thank the accompanist.

THE BRITISH FEDERATION OF MUSIC FESTIVALS PHOTOCOPIES NEW RULES FROM 2014

No entrant may bring an unauthorised photocopy into the Festival

Copies of Own Choice Works for the Adjudicator

The British Federation of Music Festivals is now a signatory to the MPA Code of Fair Practice (revised for 2012) agreed between Composers, Publishers and users of printed music. As such a specific permission has been granted regarding photocopying music as follows: Adjudicator Copy: A person performing a work at our festivals in front of an adjudicator may make ONE copy for the adjudicator provided that the performer has already purchased his/her own copy and that the copy made is retained and destroyed by the adjudicator immediately after the festival.

This copy must be marked with the following "Adjudicator copy. Destroy after use."

Important: This permission only applies to the Adjudicator copy. All other copies used for the performance (e.g. by the performer and /or accompanist) must be originals.

This only applies to the music publishers who have agreed to adhere to the standards set out in the MPA's Code of Fair Practice (see full list http://www.mpaonline.org.uk/associated_companies

Photocopies for the adjudicator must be totally legible or they may be refused.

Further clarification regarding photocopying:

In cases where larger print or separate pages to avoid difficult turns would be beneficial to the accompanist a photocopy may be used provided that it is destroyed after the performance.

Internet purchased music: If sheet music is printed from the internet for the use of the adjudicator or accompanist, the permission statement from that site must be provided to the festival with the printed copy.

Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone

The Federation and its member Festivals use the following policies and procedures to create Safer Festivals for everyone:

1. A single, definitive Child Protection Policy adopted by all Federation Festivals. 2. One or more designated Festival Safeguarding Officers (FSO) appointed for each

Federation Festival. Name: Mrs Helen Whitaker Phone: 01670 788833 3. Best practice advice in the form of Safe Working Practice and Festival Child

Protection leaflets, with support and training for all Festival staff and volunteers. Including clear reporting procedures for anyone with a concern about a child.

4. Appropriate recruitment and induction procedures for all new Festival staff and volunteers responsible for providing safe environments for everyone attending / performing at a Federation Festival.

5. All Festival stewards wear a name badge. All teachers/parents/guardians/carers are asked to report all incidents of any nature to anyone wearing a badge. All reported incidents will be handled in accordance with the Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection best practice advice. In addition, we will ensure the availability of a quiet area / room where concerns can be expressed in private.

6. For the duration of the Festival all teachers/parents/guardians/carers are responsible for the continuous care and supervision of their own children/pupils/vulnerable adults. If they are unable to attend personally, they must delegate their responsibilities to an identified adult and ensure that their children/pupils/vulnerable adults are aware of the identity and name of the person responsible for their care. This includes supervision throughout all Festival venues, performance and rehearsal areas that may be provided. Please Note: Festival Personnel will not supervise public areas such as toilets.

7. No unauthorised photography or video recording is allowed at our Festivals. Where parents/guardians/carers do not wish photos to be taken at all, then the responsible adult attending should ensure that their child/pupil/vulnerable adult is not included in official authorised photos.

8. Some children and vulnerable adults may have specific needs in order to take part. If this is the case, we ask the responsible teachers/parents/guardians/carers to contact the Festival prior to arrival. The Festival actively seeks wherever possible to meet these needs, but must know beforehand in order to prepare support – or to advise that help cannot be provided on this occasion.

9. The Festival’s Child Protection Policy and approach to Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone is published explicitly in our Syllabus, Programme and on our website. By completing and signing the entry form all parents / guardians / carers and teachers of entrants under 18 (or vulnerable adults of any age) confirm that they give (or have obtained) the necessary consents for the entrants to take part in the Festival. Without consent the entry to the Festival cannot be accepted.

Wansbeck Music Festival - Child Protection Policy The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech work for amateur festivals everywhere to help create thousands of educational performance opportunities for children and young people each year. The Federation, and our member Festivals, are committed to ensuring safe environments for children and young people and believe that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind. We recognise our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people, by a commitment to recommend best practice which protects them. This policy applies to our Board of Trustees, paid staff, Adjudicator members, volunteers, students or anyone working on behalf of the Federation and our member Festivals.

We recognise that: • the welfare of the child/young person is paramount • all children, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, religious

belief, sexual orientation or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse

• working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers and other agencies is essential in promoting young people’s welfare.

The purpose of the policy: • to provide protection for the children and young people who participate in our

festivals, including the children of festival members • to provide staff and volunteers with guidance on procedures they should adopt

in the event that they suspect a child or young person may be experiencing, or be at risk of, harm

We will seek to safeguard children and young people by: • valuing them, listening to and respecting them • adopting child protection guidelines through procedures and safe working practice for staff and volunteers • recruiting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made • sharing information about child protection and safe working practice with

children, parents, staff and volunteers • sharing information about concerns with agencies who need to know, and

involving parents and children appropriately • providing effective management for staff and volunteers through supervision,

support and training.

The Federation will review this policy each year in November in line with Safe Network guidance or sooner in light of any changes in legislation or guidance. All changes will be communicated to our member Festivals in time for the start of the new Festival year.
