• A. Napoleon was a great military commander who rose through the military ranks and eventually earned command of an army training to invade England
• B. He helped to set up a new government after the overthrow of the Directory

II. Napoleon: the Emperor
• A. With control of the army, Napoleon was able to crown himself emperor of France
• 1. The French people supported Napoleon because they believed he would bring stability to the empire.
• 2. With this action, France is no longer a republic
• B. Created a civil code which guaranteed citizens such things as religious freedom, equality, and the abolishment of feudalism.

• A. Napoleon’s army defeated armies from Russia and Austria
• B. In the early 1800s, most of Europe was controlled by Napoleon

• A. In 1812, Napoleon invaded Russia
• B. Since Russia is such a large country, Napoleon’s army was unable to defeat it.
• Napoleon lost 300,000 troops in Russia
• C. Knowing Napoleon’s army was weakened, other nations rose up to fight him
• D. With a weakened army, Napoleon could not hold off attacks from other nations
• E. Eventually, Napoleon was sent into exile and the French monarchy was restored
• F. However, Napoleon soon returned and regained control of his army

• G. Other nations in Europe promised to defeat Napoleon again
• H. In 1815, Napoleon attacked British and Prussian troops in Waterloo
• I. Napoleon was defeated and sent into exile again, where he stayed until his death

• One of the main effects of Napoleon was that European empires would begin to join together to stop an imperialistic and aggressive military leaders
