Using the idea of Manifest Destiny, The

Midway Islands were annexed (joined/added to the USA) in 1867.

Who, What, How

Russia in debt from war Sec.of State William H. Seward agreed to

purchase Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. (that’s only about 2 cents an acre!)

At the time, critics thought Seward was crazy and called the deal "Seward's folly."

Why did the US get involved?

Expand power & gain natural resources! Major discoveries of gold made in AK in the

1880s and 1890s. Brought attention and people to Alaska. Today, petroleum transported across the

state through a pipeline is Alaska's richest mineral resource.

Questions to think about while reading: What was going on in the US when Alaska was

purchased from Russia? Why was the sale considered a “folly”? When and why did attitudes towards Alaska

change? How were the native people of Alaska treated?

Hawaii is in the Pacific Ocean, about 2,387 mi from CA

Who

Until the late 1890s, Hawaii is ruled by a monarch.

American Sugar and Pineapple Planters on the island become very wealthy and powerful.

What happened and How did it happen? Queen Liliuokalani is removed from power by

American military force Pressure had been put on the gov’t from

strong businessmen w/ interests in Hawai (including Sanford Dole – the pineapple guy!)

When

Hawaii becomes annexed to the US in1898 Why did the US get involved: America gains

greater access to goods!
