NounAn instrument used by navigators to determine latitude and longitude by using star and planet positions.

Without their astrolabes, most explorers would have been lost and unable to navigate the Atlantic ocean

The indigenous people were surprised to see Europeans since they had never seen anything like them before.

The Conquistadores were after the indigenous peoples’ gold, and as a result were often very cruel to them.

NounThe belief that a mother country should try to establish colonies to benefit the country.

Colonialism lead to the European settlement of North and South America, and helps explain why most people in America have connections to Europe or Africa.

NounAn economic and foreign policy belief that controlling trade is vital to national security.

Many private pirates, called privateers, were hired by kings to raid other countries’ ships because of the mercantile system of the 1600’s.
