Aliens• Legal aliens do not have full political

rights. They cannot vote, run for office, serve on juries, or work in government jobs.

• They can live & work in the US, own property, pay taxes. They must carry an identification card.

• Around 12 million people are living in the US illegally. They have no rights in the US.

Naturalization Process

• Naturalization: legal process to become a citizen.

• Step 1: Declaration of Intent: file an official statement with Immigration & Naturalization Service (INS). Then, they must live in America for 5 years (3 if they are married).–Many take classes during this time to

prepare for the naturalization test

• Step 2: File an application for citizenship & have an interview: INS official wants to make sure the immigrant meets requirements.

• Step 3: Take the naturalization test: citizenship exam with questions about reading, writing, and speaking English, as well as history & government of the United States.

• Step 4: Ceremony: if citizenship is granted, you attend a ceremony to celebrate & pledge an oath of allegiance to the country. You promise to obey the laws & the Constitution. You sign a document, and then you are officially a citizen!

• You are trying to do what is best for the country and secure votes. A good policy should deal with the 12 million illegal immigrants in the US today AND what to do about the future immigrants to the US.

• Your goal is to create a three-fold pamphlet outlining the steps necessary for an alien to become a naturalized citizen of the United States. It must include: 1.An illustrated, colored title page2.A brief explanation of rights granted to legal

aliens, and rights denied to legal aliens.3.A brief introduction to the process of

naturalization.4.Explain the steps involved in becoming a citizen

(the naturalization process), with complete sentence explanations of each step.

5.At least two other colored illustrations, not including the title page.

**Assignment will be graded based on the quality of information included. It must be neat, organized, and display some creativity.
